Pretty sure i hate the magic mouse

I've been using the wired mighty mouse for about three years. I figured the new magic mouse would be superior, but I think its a step backwards. no trackball (favorite feature of the mighty mouse), no swipping, no side to side or up and down gestures, its just a two button mouse with weird landing strips.
Is this magic mouse going to get OS software upgraded or swipping enabled to make OS Lion a whole lot better? or should I just return it, and try to find a wireless mighty mouse somewhere (they don't sell it new anymore).
I just got it this week, and I can't use it at all without the trackball. Can't imagine what mousing was before the little trackball.

Of course you can swipe/scroll up and down and side to side. You may need to configure it in System Preferences to get it working the way you like, but believe me, it's a lot better than only having a tiny trackball surface to scroll with.
Look here, too:

Edit: I noticed that you have 10.5. If you can upgrade to 10.6 (or wait for 10.7), you'll also get momentum scrolling with that mouse (ie a Safari page will continue scrolling for a while after you release the mouse). Or this hint may work for you.

  • I HATE THE MAGIC MOUSE! Any suggestions for a solid alternative for graphics use?

I have the 27" Intel Based Mac and LOVE the machine...brilliant, beautiful, fast! I also LOVE the wireless keyboard...light, responsive, awesome! But I HATE the Magic Mouse...hate hate hate! I work with Adobe programs (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Mastersuite CS5) and the mouse control and scroll are all over the place. I need precision control. I need the mouse to stay where I want it to and scroll when I ask it and not scroll when I need to be zoomed in at 6400%.
Now, There HAS to be a good, solid user controlled wireless mouse that works well with the mac! Please HELP!!
Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

What is the problem with just using a good old fashioned WIRED mouse?  When we spec computers for purchase for use by our graphic design, animation and digital photo student lab systems, we always go with a wired mouse..  Better control and more reliable operation are the reasons.  The fact that they are less likely to "wander off" is another big plus for us.
We also go with wired, with numeric keypad, keyboards so we do not have to worry about batteries going down on either mouse or keyboard./  Yep, it is a step backward in technology but reliablity and ease of use trumps "bleeding edge" technology in this case.
If you want you can also have the Magic Mouse on the system but either shut off or stuck up in some corner of the desk where you won't hit it by accident.  That way if you do decide you need the "touch pad" features, they are still available.

  • Is anybody else struggling with an intermittent connection when using the Magic Mouse/Trackpad ONLY on Boot Camp?

    Hi,
I've seen thousands of posts about Bluetooth connection issues and interference and stutter/lag for both the Magic Mouse and Trackpad (affecting both Mac OS X and Windows under Boot Camp) but my problem is different.
To summarise my setup, I use:
    - Retina MacBook Pro (lid closed or open, doesn't make a difference to this problem)
    - Thunderbolt Display
    - Wireless Keyboard
    - Magic Trackpad (have also tried a Magic Mouse and experience similar issues to the Trackpad)
And in Mac OS X, everything works perfectly. The keyboard and trackpad work smoothly when I'm 6-7 metres from the machine, whether or not the laptop lid is open or closed, and whether or not the Thunderbold Display is connected.
But on to my problem: the bluetooth connection is incredibly unreliable/intermittent when in Windows (I run Windows 7 64-bit and Boot Camp 4.0, and got both devices connected without any trouble via Bluetooth).
But during usage, the cursor stutters/lags frequently, and tap to click (when enabled) seems to get triggered by mistake all the time (even when I'm not touching the Trackpad or even at the computer, clicks get registered).
The Wireless Keyboard is perfect, and works well 5 metres from the machine. The Mouse and Trackpad, though, don't even work reliably when they are 6 inches from the machine. The built-in trackpad on the laptop works perfectly too, in Windows and Mac.
I spent a week assuming I was suffering from Bluetooth interference, so I tried:
    - using the laptop with the lid open
    - removing the Thunderbolt display completely and trying the Magic Trackpad
    - repositioning items on my desk
    - disabling wifi
All of these adjustments made minor differences to how good/bad the Trackpad was, but none came close to fixing the problem or making it work as smoothly as under Mac OS X. It was only after doing all of this that I realised perhaps it was just a Apple driver for Windows issue, so I booted into Mac OS X and tested everything out, and sure enough, it's all perfect. But back into Windows, the Trackpad doesn't work reliably at all.
Obviously, the hardware is not at fault, and I assume the signal strength doesn't vary between operating system (why would it?) so I'm left believing this must be a driver issue. The TrackPad and Magic Mouse drivers have been out for a couple of years, so I'm surprised they can still be this bad. I tried both the latest driver from Boot Camp 4.0 (3.2.0.0) for the Trackpad, and also the older one from Boot Camp 3.2 (3.1.0.7) and both are equally bad for me.
So my question is: has anybody else struggled with using the Trackpad (or Magic Mouse) with Boot Camp 4.0 and Windows 7 64-bit, whilst finding it to be perfect under Mac OS? I haven't found many posts complaining about the Windows driver, which is why I assumed it was an interference issue. But I'm almost sure it isn't, having spent 2 weeks investigating.
    Any thoughts/suggestions/answers much appreciated!
    Kyle

    SOLVED!
After much testing, I have found the cause of lagging/jumpiness on the Bluetooth Magic Mouse and Magic TrackPad in Boot Camp. Hopefully this will help others:
The drivers for the Broadcom 802.11n Wireless Adapter have a setting called "Bluetooth Collaboration" that is Disabled by default. Enabling this option removes the problem instantly. My Magic Trackpad now works flawlessly, even if I stand 6 metres from the machine. It now works just as well as under Mac OS. The setting can be found under:
Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter (right click and choose "Properties". Under the "Advanced" tab, highlight the setting named "Bluetooth Collaboration", then change it to Enable. Then click OK.
I narrowed the problem down to the wireless card by disabling ALL startup services and processes for Windows, then re-enabling one by one. As soon as I enabled the Windows Wireless Service, the problem came back. Similarly, disabling the Wireless Card inside the Network and Sharing Center (or Device Manager) removes the problem. This led me to believe it must be a driver issue with the wireless card, since the problem didn't occur with the Magic TrackPad under Mac OS, or on my mother's Windows 7 64-bit computer. So when I went into the Driver Properties to check for an update, I found this setting about Bluetooth Collaboration.
I really hope this helps others trying to use Bluetooth devices under Boot Camp. All Apple notebooks use the Broadcom card (and have done for years), so this driver is installed for almost anybody using Boot Camp on an Apple notebook. I'd assume this problem would affect anybody using Boot Camp + wifi + a Bluetooth device.
    Cheers

    Hello
Simple problem - don,t know how to solve it.
With Premiere CC when I try to do a selection (click... drag... release the click) very often it stop way before the end of the move I'm swinging the Magic Mouse. I taught that the mouse clicking was defective and went to get a new Magic Mouse after lots of frustration. Today, I have an edit to do it it does the SAME thing !!
    I was like ????#$%?&*(???
Opened all the lights and taught I've trow the new mouse to the garbage and was using the defective mouse again... no !! - ??
Actually, the bran new mouse is doing the same thing. What I understand after investigating on the motion and watching carefully my fingers !! -  is that when I click I have to keep my finger at the EXACT same place on the mouse... drag and release and it's fine. If I click by pushing on the mouse and my finder is moving of a 1/32th of a millimeter, it will release and my selection will be to redo. You can understand my frustration ! - 75$ later... same problem, but I know that if I click with about 5 pounds of pressure and trying to pass my finger through the plastic of the mouse, it you stay steady and make it !
The problem is that scrolling is enable while clicking and it bugs.
    How to disable it ??
Simple question - can't find the answer !

    Helllooo !?
sorry but the Magic Mouse is just useless with the new Adobe Premiere CC and since I'm not the only one but can't find answer this is really disappointing. This mouse is just fantastic and now I have to swap from a USB mouse to the Magic Mouse every times I do some editing. My USB mouse if hurting my hand somehow and I want to got back to the Magic Mouse asap. Please - for sure there is a simple solution !
    Thanks !!

  • No Scrolling on the Magic Mouse 10.5.8

I have installed my new magic mouse and have 10.5.8. All functions work except for the scroll feature. I ran all software updates but this is not working. The video about the magic mouse leads me to believe that I have to have Snow Leopard. Is this true? When I go to system preferences and click on Mouse, I can only adjust the tracking and clicking speeds, no options for the scroll feature. I'm sure there is an easy solution for this one.......

This thread should help. Note the link at the top for the Magic Mouse software is incorrect you need to go here

  • Is it possible to disable the magic mouse scrolling in windows 7?

I've partitioned my hard drive with bootcamp to run windows 7 for a handful of games that aren't mac friendly. The problem is that once I installed the drivers to use the magic mouse, the scroll keeps jumping around at inconvenient times while I'm playing which makes it pretty difficult. How can I turn the scrolling off? I like having the scroll on the trackpad, but I only want the left and right click on the mouse.

I use MagicMouse on iMac with Windows 7 running (installed through BootCamp). Got sick of annoying horizontal scrolling. The solution described above has helped me to disable it. Here is what I've done in steps:
    1) go to http://www.autohotkey.com/ and download an app (a script editor).
    2) Install and run the program - please note that it will not open as it runs in the background
    3) Rightclick on the desktop -> choose "New" -> "AutoHotkey Script" (a new script file will be created on the desktop) -> name it as you wish (e.g. "Mouse_HScroll")
    4) Rightclick on the file you've just created and choose "Edit Script" from the menu.
    5) Add these three lines below existing text in the file:
    WheelLeft::return
    WheelRight::return
    #MaxHotkeysPerInterval 5000
    6) Save file
    7) Run "Convert .ahk to .exe" program from the package installed earlier and browse the file you've just created, hit ">Convert<" -> .exe file should be created. Run this file -> the scrolling should be disabled now.
    7) You may wish to move this file to Start/"Autorun" folder, so it would be launched automatically each time you reboot your Mac/PC.
    Hope this helps! Good Luck

  • Is it possible to tap-to-click on the Magic Mouse?

I know this is a simple question, but is it possible to set up tap-to-click on the Magic Mouse? I've opened up the mouse set-up and the mouse preferences with the Magic Mouse detected. There are options for swiping and right-clicking, and so on, but there's no option for tap-to-click. I don't like the full manual click on the Magic Mouse (the "throw" is way too long), so I'm hoping someone knows a solution.
    Thank you!

It's pretty safe. I used it for a while. It's also easy to uninstall.
Maybe Lion will provide something when it comes out this summer. Here's what's known at this point:

  • How do I uninstall the Magic Mouse driver or downgrade it?

I am using the magic mouse.
However, I want to use one button bluetooth mouse instead of magic mouse.
That old mouse isn't paired with macbook pro.
I think the driver should be downgraded for old one.
How do I uninstall the driver for magic mouse and reinstall it for the old one?

    Hello sure:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I do not think you need (or want) to play with the drivers.
Go to system preferences>bluetooth. Disconnect the device (highlight it and use the little gear. Delete it with the minus sign.
Now add the mouse you want into your system (gear and +).

  • Where is in OS X Lion the option to turn on or off  the Magic Mouse scroll.

I have not found anymore on OS X Lion the option to turn on or off  the vertical scroll of Magic Mouse. The problem is That I use Corel Draw with Parallels, and Corel Draw does not work with the scroll on, he gets mad. I always turn off the scroll option of Magic Mouse in OS X Leopaed before entering Windows XP. Now I had to put a conventional mouse and stop using the Magic Mouse because I dont find this option in the settings of the mouse preferences.
Anyone know how to solve this problem?

  • Advice concerning the Magic Mouse

This is not an adverse comment on the Magic Mouse, I'm really satisfied with it, but in some situations it can be too responsive. For instance, make sure your finger is nowhere near the surface if the pointer is over a "dangerous" button or menu and you didn't notice. The surface is so sensitive that you don't have to click on the "left" or "right" buttons, just touching the surface acts as a click. This happened to me this morning, when I clicked "No" instead of "Yes" to a dialog box asking if I wanted to save changes to a document... Maybe my fingers are hotter or more electric than average? In any case, a setting to reduce the sensitivity of the trackpad would be useful. Is this possible?

My wife had installed MagicPrefs from Vlad Alexa without telling me. This preference pane is the source of the Magic Mouse being too responsive. Everything back to normal now.

Did you post from the system that has the problem? (Your "More System Details" list shows Flash 11.7 instead of 11.8 for some reason.)
This is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with Flash in Firefox. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:
    (1) Make sure all recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.
    (2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash ''(I see from your post that you've done this part)''
    (A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
    (B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues

  • I use an iMac (27" 3.4) and have problems with the Magic Mouse. It does not use contact, but opens useless and unrelated submenus with every click, even on the empty desktop. I can't shift, open or close pages. Has anyone out there the same problem?

I use an iMac 27" (mid 2011). Until recently I had OSX 10.6.8 installed, but both, the HDD and SSD had to be replaced, and I lost all the memory.
After the repair through Apple Care I had OSX 10.7.5. (Lion) installed, which developed a Magic Mouse problem.
Unlike with most users, I have no problems with connection, but grapple with a different kind of erratic behaviour.
All fancy stuff is turned off in the mouse preferences. When I try to move, open or close pages, unrelated submenus pop up and hinder the
required task. No matter how often I click, these menus stay there, and they even come up when clicking on the bare desktop.
It renders the mouse absolutely useless, as no work can be done with it.
The first 'Magic Mouse' had depleted batteries every few days, despite switching it off after use.
I was supplied a new Mouse, which does better battery-wise, but the problems are the same. I can't get a result by clicking on any link, due to
the pop-up menus, so both 'Magic Mice' are totally useless.
At present I am using the old USB mouse from my Mac Pro, and that works still o.k.
The problem are not the mice, but the software. The first 2 weeks after installation of OSX 10.7.5 the Magic Mouse worked though.
I have no idea as to what the reason may be.
Has anyone in the community ever experienced that particular problem. Any hint would be welcomed.
    Thank you!

Not using any mouse pad, I have a very smooth desktop. But I just tried to use a sheet of A4 printing paper, but no result, the problem persisted.
Someone on this forum suggested, that USB3 may interfere with the magic mouse.
I have 2 LaCie HDD's about 70 cm away from the mouse, I use them on Thunderbolt. But in operation or not - the result is the same, the mouse plays up! Just now I was clicking the desktop and the mouse created a new folder!!
    Thanks for the advice, Bee
    Cheers, Gerd

  • TS3048 Is there a way to "calibrate" the magic mouse? I have rearranged settings for mouse, air-cleaned, tried different surfaces, however, it seems to be misinterpreting finger movements and randomly trying to open launchpad when enabled.

Is there a way to "calibrate" the magic mouse? Batteries are good. I have rearranged settings for mouse, air-cleaned, tried different surfaces, however, it seems to be misinterpreting finger movements and randomly trying to open launchpad when enabled-flashing between the app I am in and launchpad. When right-click is enabled I have to go to the extreme upper left of mousepad to click or it is interpreted as right-click. Won't consistently "scroll". Suggestions?

There is something wrong with my new macbook pro MD322(Lion 10.7.2). It continually lost connection with the magic mouse. I ensure that the mouse is charged well. I also looked up the matter on Web. It looks that the matter is familiar for many users.
