Prevening Project Render file creation and backup

I would like for FCPx to not create Render files for projects unless I request it. Also, I would like to block TimeMachine form backing up those render files without having to navigate to each project and excluded the render directory.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Frank

... same for Event Transcoded Media and Render files.  I know how to prevent them from being created but don't know how to prevent them from clogging up my TimeMachine drive.
Thanks!

    iphone contacts "not available" to car phonebook after messing around with Outlook.pst files, names and backups, on my ms XP 2003 laptop. I substituted a much smaller new Personal Folder -Contacts File, with a smaller list of phone numbers (4 only as a test) which successfully synced to the iPhone 4. The iPhone connects to the Skoda Octavia HandsFreeSystem OK (Bluetooth works fine), but now iPhone wont load the new Contacts as it did originally. However a family Nokia (never messed with) can connect properly. So must be the iPhone or more likely an Outlook.pst \ Contacts problem. Ideas?

    After fiddling a little more, the following fixed my corrupted outlook.pst file:
    1) I made a backup
    2) In outlook under file, I exported the calendar to excel
    3) In outlook under file, I imported the calendar back to outlook
    And voila, it worked.

  • Setting project default file locations and a few random interface questions

    I apologize for the randomness of this post, but it seemed better than spamming a bunch of different posts in a short period of time.  I've been using Premiere Elements 9 for about 6 months now and there are a few little things that I'd like to tweak.
    I'd like to change the default file save location for a project.  I've got different projects in different folders and it seems like I should be able to set a default save location for each project.  All I've ever been able to find in the help is how to set the scratch folder, which is different.
    I'd like to change the default encoding preset for a project.  For example, I have a custom preset for mp4 under the mobile phone category.  It would be nice to have that be the default whenever I pick the mobile phone category.
    With birthdays and concerts and plays and all that stuff I have about 50 videos and a couple hundred large photos already.  Every time Premiere loads, it takes a few extra seconds to load up all of the thumbnails.  I hide all the videos and pictures on the Organize tab and save the project, but it never sticks.  Is this just impossible?
    Finally, every so often, the end-of-clip marker acts funny.  I don't know what the proper name for it is, but it is the thing under the mouse cursor in the picture below.  It used to automatically move on the time line as I added or deleted clips.  Somehow I clicked a button and it no longer does that.  After a week or so of not working, it goes back to automatically adjusting as I add and delete clips from the timeline and then it will break again.  Ideas?
    Also in the timeline, I now have this huge gap of nothingness on top of video 1, see picture.  My ocd says that Video1 and Audio 1 should be at the very top and the gap should be on the bottom.  Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Bob

    I kind of wish you'd have spread these questions out over a couple of posts so that we could answer each thoroughly. If I answer all of them in depth in a single post, this answer would be the size of one of my books! (which, by the way, contain many of the answers to these questions.)
    1. The default save location for your videos should be the last place you've saved your video to. So that should happen automatically. Although in my books I recommend that, whenever you start a new project, you create a new folder for it. This is good housekeeping and a good way to keep your tmp and render files in the same place on your drive, which has a number of advantages.
    2. You can't create a custom project preset. The only presets available are the ones Adobe provides. And, although they are pretty extensive, some non-traditional formats (like video from some mobile phones) are not well supported. You may be able to get it to work -- but it's usually a hybrid solution and, personally, if you plan to use your phone's video as your main video source, I'd recommend you look at another video editing program. Premiere Elements doesn't do the hybrid stuff well. It's ideally suited for video from traditional camcorders.
    3. The thumbnails you see when the program loads are not in your current project. At least not until you import them into your Project panel. That Media panel is merely a preview to what's in your Organizer catalog. As I explain in my book, it's usually best to ignore this panel until you really learn your way around the basics of this program. It's very confusing. Fortunately, it adds very little load time to the program itself -- regardless of how much time it seems to add.
    4. The thing in the illustration is the Work Area Bar. It's used to isolate a segment of your timeline for rendering, etc. Usually, it will shrink and grow as you add and remove video from your timeline. Unfortunately, there's a bug in version 9 and, if you manually change it once during a project, you'll have to manually change it for the rest of the time you work on the project. But, if you drag each end of the Work Area Bar to cover your entire timeline of videos, your project shouldn't misbehave.
    5. The "gap of nothingness" on your timeline is just room for you to add more audio and video tracks if you'd like to. It's a good thing to have! BTW, as I'm sure you know (and my books, once again, explain) you can toggle the tracks on your timeline so that they display as either compressed (as in your illustration) or wide open, which allows you to see your clips and control audio and video levels. Once again, this is a very good thing!
    Happy moviemaking.

  • Implementing a file server and backup solution

    Hi there - Looking for sage advice from the experts! Here's my dilemma:
    I have a 1st gen Intel iMac, and I recently picked up the 13-inch aluminum MacBook. Both have 250 Gb drives. I have a fair amount of media and software using all but 9 gigs of space on the iMac. One more Final Cut project should eat the majority of that:-)
    Before I start moving media over to the MacBook and run into the same space issues, I'd like to come up with a storage and back up solution that does the following:
    1. Provides one centralized location for all media (music, photos, video files)
    2. Keep back ups of centralized location AND backups of both iMac and MacBook--I don't want to lose any work in progress.
    I'd love to hear how others manage this problem. Can a Time Machine solve the problem? Am I looking at a RAID solution?
    Thanks for your help!!

    Hi,
    In a case where the same workbook is saved locally and on the application server and this error happens, what is the decisive factor? Meaning why does this happen for some workbooks and not for others? Is it a question of size, number of queries, other?
    Do embedded excel functionalities and update links also interfere?
    Many thanks in advance,

  • Dates of file creation and other activities

    I purchased my computer in early February of 2006 with system 10.4 installed. I set the date and time using preferences. Since that time all my file creation dates seen in Finder window "Preview" are given as 2006/01/05 (international standard format). However if I hit the "More info" button the correct dates are given on the detail panel and also the correct times of the occurrences.
    ITunes shows the dates of last playing in the incorrect way also on its index page.
    Where does the incorrect date originate and how can I get it to agree with the date set on the computer?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    If you're using some flavor of Windows, then the attached VI can grab the file creation date, along with some other usful file info. All the info is returned as strings so it's easy to use as you need.
    This is saved in ver 6.0.2, but it upgrades OK.

  • Get original file creation and modified date during upload - ONLY in explorerview ??

    Hi,
    SharePoint and me are having a difficult time again ;-)
    I have the customer requirement to retain the original file's creation date and modified date.
    Please do not start replying by just pasting links that you might find while searching for the keywords "retain creation date".
    In a nutshell I found out that the original dates are only available in SharePoint if the
    explorerview has been used. I always thought that the explorerview is a bad thing, but only here - the original creation date is stored in a property called "vti_ct". In the itemupdated eventreceiver you can get the
    value and work with it.
    Complete list of available properties
    http://sbrickey.com/Tech/Blog/Post/Secrets_Revealed_SP_Event_Receivers_firing_multiple_times
    Here I found the hint with the explorerview

    It is only available in the 2nd loop of the itemupdated event.
    How the f*** can this happen??? The 2nd post states that when using the explorerview the file is being copied, while it is being re-created by using the SharePoint UI.
    Has anyone a different approach for using the SharePoint UI?
    I thought about different approaches for this issue. From my perspective it seems to be not solvable from the server-side. It seems only to be able to be set using a client application.
    Example 1: spbulkdocumentimport

    Example 2: implement a custom webservice

    How do you deal with this customer requirement?

    Sven

    Hi,
    Newbie to SharePoint, learn quite a lot from the links you provided.
    “I found out that the original dates are only available in SharePoint if the explorerview has been used”, this would make sense because the original creation time is generated
    by the file system in the local machine.
    However, when a file is uploaded to SharePoint library, it will be stored as binary data in the database, as well as the newly created time. It means that it will be a “new” file
    in the SharePoint site regardless of where it comes from.
    Per my knowledge, the only way I can suggest is that you will need to create a client desktop application for the file uploading, which will be a more general way not only for
    uploading a file, but also when we need to migrate files between different systems.
    Thanks

  • File creation and Java Web Start

    Hi All,
    I need to write a Java application with the following requirements and deploy the application using Java Web Start:
    - Load the properties file(say, "./props/xyz.properties")
    - Read the location where the file needs to be created from the
    loaded properties file
    - Now, create a file at the specified location.
    I am able to perform the initial 2 steps after including the "props" directory(which contains the xyz.properties file) in my sigend jar file. But, unable to create a file in the specified directory.
    Is it possible to create file at a predefined location(outside the jar file) within the server from where the application is downloaded?
    I have included the code segment which I tried :
    ClassLoader classLoader = this.getClass().getClassLoader();
    // load the properties file
    URL fileURL = classLoader.getResource("props/xyz.properties");
    Properties props = new Properties();
    props.load(fileURL.openStream());
    // read the location
    String location = props.getProperty("file.dir", "");
    String dir = classLoader().getResource(location).getPath();
    // create a new file
    File newEntry = new File(dir + "raghu.txt");
    newEntry.createNewFile();
    Is there a way to achieve this? If so, please let me know that.

    Allong with signing you jar, you need to request all-permissions in the jnlp file:

  • Render Files incorrectly being show

    I've come accross this problem a few times now since updating to 5.1 last week.
    When I go to edit a sequence that has already been rendered (to view color correction and graphic overlays) the video in the canvas is showing the wrong footage.
    If I cut a section out, as I need to do for last minute trimming, then Close the Gap between the other clips and put in a new transition, it's showing the old video (coming from the Render file from from the sequence before the edit) but playing the new audio after the cut. Rendering again does not fix this problem.
    Very strange and buggy. I love FCP but I hate the fact that every new update seems to bring new problems even as it fixes old ones.
    I've figured out that if you delete the associated render files and re-render it completely it will fix the problem, but this work around is tedious and time consuming for large projects requiring a lot of rendering.
    I don't know if I explained this well, but has anyone else seen this problem with FCP 5.1.2 on an Intel mac? Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,

    FCP's done this for yonks - not just 5.1
    It suggest your project's getting bigger and bigger. Your poor MBP has to load up all your sequences and clips when you open your project - many of which you probably don't need.
    Try starting a new project and dragging what's needed from the old project to the new. Save the old project as a backup archive in case you need to access it again.
    This way, you'll leave behind a lot of rubbish that's slowing and confusing your MBP. A complete new render can do wonders - but trash the old render files first and empty the trash.
    How much RAM and HD space do you have? And are your Media Files on your System Drive? If they are, you need to move them to a different one.

  • Render Files Are Being Saved onto My Mac Book Hard Drive...?

    Hi All -
    So, I was highly curious as to why I have such little disk space on the hard drive on my Mac Book Pro and discovered that there is a file called "Render Files" on my hard drive which contains an enormous amount of video footage from movies I've edited in FCP.
    I don't understand why these files are going into my hard drive...? I have an external My Book connected to my computer. In FCP under System Settings, on the Scratch Book tab, Video Capture, Video Render and Audio Render are all checked off and to the right of this my My Book is listed. So I thought everything would be going into my My Book external drive.
    However, I looked into My Book and noticed that there is a file that says Capture Scratch that seems to have all of the captured footage of these movies. So, I'm thoroughly confused as to what this "Render Files" file is doing on my hard drive and how can I just get all video footage to automatically store on my external My Book drive. I'm afraid that if I delete the files in the "Render Files" that I'm going to create a real disaster.
    Any advice or clarification on this would be most appreciated.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi -
    Couple of options for you to consider:
    Open the Render Folder that you have found on your internal hard drive and sort the files by date. Are the files recent / from the current project that you are working on?
    If they are then I would go to
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm
    download Preference Manager and trash your preferences. This will cause you to lose your current preferences, favorites, etc., which you will have to manually reset - but often clears up strange behavior in FCP. I would then go back and reset my Scratch Disk settings to the external drive.
    Is there at Render Files folder on your external drive? Open that and sort be date and see if your current project render files are there.
    If they are, that would mean the render files you found on your internal drive are from projects prior to you assigning the files to your external drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Losing link to render files

    Here's the situation. Final Cut 6.0, running on client's Dual 2.3 OS 10.4.9. Feature film, project was fully rendered the last time I opened it. Now I open it and nothing is rendered, but Final Cut does not prompt me that any render files have gone offline. I check in the Render Files folder and the render files are all still there. I restore the project to the last autosave from last week, when I know it was good. Project reopens, everything now appears rendered in the timeline again. Great, so I Save it (also tried Save As... with same results), close the project, reopen it, timeline appears rendered for a brief moment, then the spinning beachball of death appears for several long seconds, and when it disappears, suddenly everything is unrendered again.
    Explanations? Solutions?

  • Render Files folder over 450GB

    My question is, ok i can delete them manually, which its stupid it should remove the ones that aren't needed anymore itself.
    Well, I have a project that I use weekly, I do not want to lose the project. I can't delete the files manually in the render folder as they are all random numbers and letters so its too hard.
    Only way I can see fit is to delete the project and start all over but I don't really want to do that. This project consists of a section from 50 different videos, of about 30 seconds each clip made into one clip of 30 minutes. Each week some clips get deleted (not all) and new ones replace them. Just to give you an idea of the situation.
    Could I transfer it to a new project?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Ok, I solved it, i went to FILE>PROJECT PROPERTIES, that takes you back to a list of projects. Then you go to FILE>DELETE PROJECT RENDER FILES, and choose the option 'Delete Unused Only' if you want to keep your current project and that removes all unused, so I now have 496GB free hard drive space instead of 40GB.

  • Disappearing Render Files

    I finish working on a project, render, save and close. When I reopen the project some, not all, of the render files disappear and need to be re-rendered.It doesn't always happen, and I've only noticed it happening after the Mac has been powered off for a while. It's not a big problem but it is inconvenient. Any help is appreciated, as always.

    Others may have a better answer...all I can tell you is I've seen this happen from time to time, no particular reason...same with corrupt files...etc...'it's all just ones and zeros'..poor little buggers must just get tired...
    I just re-render and move on.

    EDIT - follow up to Bogie's query...for me, they've always just disappeared...I've tried reconnecting, searching manually..just gone, oh well. You could tell me to trash preferences, but frankly, I've only done that once in two years, just for kicks....just work it out and move forward.

  • Final cut express 4.  Should render files be saved or deleted?

    Which files can safely be deleted from the drive when the edit is finished?

    You can safely delete all of the render files, cache files & waveform files - they can always be re-created as long as you have your FCE project file and the associated source media files that you used in your project.
    If you archive a project all you need to keep is your FCE project file and the associated source media files.  There is no reason to keep any render, cache or waveform files as they will only take up disk space and will no longer be usable if/when you reopen the original project.   (Because typically in archiving you are copying the files to another hard drive and doing so breaks the relationship between the FCE project file and the render files.  And although there is a 'reconnect media' function in FCE in my experience it does not work well if at all with render files.)
