Prevent AOL mail/Mail app merge?

I installed Mountain Lion the other day. Previously I didn't have my AOL mail merged with the Mail app and would like to keep it that way. Before Mountain Lion, the only mail in my Mail app was email sent from Apple along with mail sent from the Mail app (photos, some hyperlinks, etc). Now all of my mail on AOL has been merged with the Mail app, and I'm not really digging it. Is there a way to stop this merge? Also, there a way to require my AOL or Apple password in order to access my Mail app? Thank you.

Go to System Preferences>Mail, Contacts and Calendars and remove the AOL account from there.

Whenever I try to type in my information to my Mail app it will not verify my gmail account- it says my username/password is incorrect when it isn't.
    Please help!

it may be a two part security verification.  contact the email provider and see if you need a special password.
some users find simply changing the password resloves the issue.

  • Cannot send Emails from AOL (Mail App) Only Recieve

For some time now i cannot seem to send emails from my AOL on the app (Mac Mail). I can receive ok, but not send. It remains in my outbox then a message appears:
Cannot send message using the server AOL
This operation couldn't be completed (MCMaiErrorDomain error 1030)
I then run the Connection Doctor:
I get a Green light for Incoming mail (AOL IMAP)
I get a Red light for outgoing (AOL SMTP)
    The message i get is:
'Trying to log in to this AOL SMTP account failed. Verify that the username and password are correct'
I have tried all the trouble shooting regarding checking the passwords, changing the passwords. Uninstalled and reinstalled. I can log on via the web ok and send and receive  . I believe it happened when i updated the computer some time back because my Macbook does the same now as well as this iMac.
In the Outgoing Mail Server SMTP it reads: AOL (Offline)
In the drop down i goto edit server and this is what is showing:
Description    Server Name     In Use By Account
    AOL                 smtp.aol.com      AOL
In the Advanced section i have Port: 587
    Box checked for 'SSL'
Box checked for 'Automatically detect and maintain account settings'
Box unchecked for 'Allow insecure authentication'
Any help would be much appreciated as this is becoming extremely frustrating

  • Forwarding AOL, Yahoo Mail to Mail APP

Hello. I have been trying to just use one application to send and receive mail and Mail on my mac seems to be the best. I have AOL and Yahoo accounts and I just want everything forwarded to Mail. I downloaded this program called Mail Forward, but I can't seem to figure it out. Something about SMTP and everything I enter doesn't work. Can someone help me out? This is really frustrating even though I'm sure it's easy it's just I'm missing something simple. Thanks.

If your Yahoo email account is a free account, Yahoo prevents accessing a free account with any email client such as the Mail.app. A free Yahoo account is webmail based only which requires using a browser. If you have a Yahoo Mail Plus or paid account ($20/yr), you can access it with the Mail.app and the required account settings for a Yahoo Mail plus account are available via Yahoo's website.
The required account information to create and access your AOL account with the Mail.app or with any email client such as the Mail.app is as follows:
    Account Type: IMAP
    Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com
User Name: The portion of your AOL email address in front of the @ sign only.
    Password: The account's password.
Outgoing or SMTP Mail Server: smtp.aol.com
    Server Port: 587
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Off or not selected.
    Authentication: Password
User Name: The portion of your AOL email address in front of the @ sign only.
Password: The account's password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.

  • Cannot send email with Mail app-..can't connect to AOL server anymore??

Up until today my MAIL app in my iMac let me use an email address that is from the AOL.com group (netscape.net)…I cannot send emails now because I can't get the computer to connect to the server. My iPad will….but not the desktop. I tried using a different server name; smtp.nestcape.net, which is the one I used in the iPad…but the iMac won't let me change it to that one..so back to the old smtp.aol.com……Still my MAIL app is not recognizing this or letting me connect!?!. I tried creating a new password at the wedpage of that email account.. successfully..but it has made no difference. I am stumped and have wasted half the day trying to deal with this. Anyone else have such an experience? HELP…PLEASE!

Thank you Eric for sending the links. Fortunately after I wrote this post…I don't know what happened but I filled in my mail preference settings for the umteenth time with my new email password and voila! It worked. For some reason however…now when I open the Mail App I do still get a prompt asking me if I want to use this server….and it is, of course, the one and only I have listed.!?!?! The thing that irritates me…is…that I had done NOTHING to cause a problem to begin with. I think my email account at aol (nestcape) may have been hacked and my password stolen or compromised in some way??...and perhaps that caused a glitch in my mail app??? I am no techy, but I should have started out with my intuition and changed the password first before going mental….When something like this happens it makes one feel so vulnerable.…I usually feel well secured with my lone iMac and now my new iPad…ANYWAY…thank tyou  for addressing my issue and I have bookmarked those links…for future reference which I hope I never need. Hey..is that your kitty??? She is beeeooootiful!
Take care and again, thanx~ D

  • Mail app stopped receiving AOL messages

Three days ago I stopped receiving emails into my AOL account using mail.app, although I am able to send messages outbound. I only have the AOL smtp server as my outbound server, so my connection to AOL apparently must be working. I am able to see messages when I access AOL on their website and see messages there. However, it appears that the imap session isn't communicating with mail.app. I considered deleting and recreating the AOL account, but I don't want to lose any of my archived messages. Any ideas? Thanks

Similar problem. I am helping a friend set up her new Macbook. She is using MAIL. Is an AOL user and has set up her AOL iMaP account in MAIL
It was not receiving or outgoing. she had a wrong PORT. I changed the settings so that port 587 is used . Briefly all her mail came in, including todayss.
Suddenly, mail cannot be viewed although red balloon on the MAIL icon says 600+ messages.
WE cannot send out either. Keep getting server error for smtp.aol.com
HOw do we set up MAIL to receive AOL imap account messages and send them?

  • When I tried to open my Mail app this morning, it opened a list of choices - iCloud, E Exchange, Google, Yahoo, Aol, Outlook.  I use Hotmail and it usually opens to my Inbox.  Why did it do this and do I choose Outlook and is it safe to sign in

When I tried to open my Mail app on my IPhone this morning, it opened a list of choices - iCloud, E Exchange, Google, Yahoo, Aol, Outlook.  I use Hotmail and it usually opens to my Inbox.  Why did it do this and do I choose Outlook and is it safe to sign in?

It sounds like instead of opening your Mail App, you actually opened your Settings App, and were somehow in the 'Add Account' section of Mail, Contacts & Calendars.
Close the apps, and then reopen just the Mail App.

  • Windows 8 mail app, has my icloud account on but none of my icloud contacts depsite merging outlook and icloud on the icloud control panel... Help?? :)

windows 8 mail app, has my icloud email accounton it, but none of my icloud contacts depite the fact that i have merged outllok and icloud on the icloud control panel

What you have experienced, though annoying, doesn't necessarily mean someone has hacked your account, though if you were finding that you were blocked because the sending limit had been reached that might indicate that you had been hacked.
What can happen is that when people receive emails which appear to come from their own address but they haven't sent they naturally tend to be concerned: however it's most unlikely that anyone has hacked their account, they've just been targeted by one of two common spammers' techniques: both arise because it's all too easy to forge the 'from' address on messages to be something other than the real one.
There are two methods. One is that the sender has forged the 'from' address to be the same as the 'to' address (so other people will see it coming from themselves, not you), presumably in the hope of confusing spam filters. It's harmless, if extremely annoying. Delete it (never ever answer spam or try to unsubscribe from it), and you don't need to be worried about it.
The other problem is that a spammer is forging your address as the 'from' address on a whole batch of messages. The first thing you hear about this is when you start getting bounce messages because the spam has been sent to non-existent addresses and is being bounced to you. There's no point at all in responding to it. It's infuriating but normally stops after a bit as they move on to another forged address.
There isn't really anything you can do about it: closing the account isn't really worth the hassle unless you are totally swamped, because you will have to tell everyone your new address. Apple can't really do any more than they already are about spam. However changing your password on general principles is a good idea.

  • Problems saving password in Mail app for AOL mail

I'm helping someone set up there Apple Mail app so they can access their AOL mail from it. I followed the instructions people have posted on the boards here but for some reason i can't get it to save the password. If i go into Mail prefs the accounts and enter the password then save it for some reason it won't save it. If i quit Mail then relaunch it the password is gone. Also when i enter the password in the the password window and then ckick on the remember in keychain it won't save it. I open the keychain utility and there's nothing in there for Mail. Just a wi-fi password.
    Any ideas?
    thx

    You're Welcome lenn!
I honestly can't say, as I do still use the AOL software. But you could still try it, to see if it works with her AOL Email address, if that is all she has.
Are you and she aware, that if she is now using another ISP, she can still use the AOL software for free?
Excerpt "The AOL service is now FREE to anyone with an Internet connection – even if it’s from another Internet service provider.
Even if you decide at some point to move to high speed or use another dial-up provider to connect to the Internet, you can keep your AOL email, AOL software and more for as long as you'd like to use them. It's your choice." from Exclusive benefits for AOL members.

  • How to mail merge via Mail.app?

I would link to run a mail merge via Numbers (or Excel) through Mail.app just like I can to print media with Pages.
    Any ideas?

I have searched high and low for the answer and it appears the mac is seriously missing this basic tool that  nearly all businesses need nowdays.  It's a real shame. Brand new macbook pro and macbook air for our sales people and whatnot and who would have thought we'd have to resort back to our old windows tools on the mac (microsoft office and outlook on OSX).  If we'd have known there was a major hole in the basic tools we wouldnt have moved over.
Anyway, that was a bit "rantish" but if I can be more constructive I've had suggestions to pay someone to write applescript and automator code for me, purchase office and outlook for mac and that's about it.  I can't find any custom apps (except for MaxBulk Mailer and RoBoPostman) but they're both very contained though I may have to give them a go soon if I can find no other solution.  (EDIT: You can also use online tools like sendgrid and the like but I want my own on machine system where I don't pay per month etc)
Basically people are saying numbers and pages haven't been updated much at all in the last 3 years so that's why this problem has been persistent for so long.  Others claim it's not a problem (they must use all their contact data in the address book rather than databases and/or spreadsheets).  It is a real problem though (I'm ranting again sorry! )
IF you find a solution I'd LOVE to hear it.  Our marketing efforts are suffering due to this.

  • Bug in Mail.app preventing from retrieving mail

Found a bug today when using Mail.app:
    What happened:
    - I setup my IMAP account onto Mail
    - Synchronized Mail with my IMAP account by clicking 'Get Mail'
-> I could get all my mails, but any other click on 'Get Mail' ended up with doing nothing. Even the 'Check for new mail every x minute' checked, I was never getting new mails. The only way to retrieve my mails was to quit Mail.app and run it again or Go offline in the App and then click 'Get Mail'
Did some investigations and here's what I found:
    - Displayed the Activity Viewer at startup
    - I saw that the app was connecting to the server, then getting mail, then doing some caching over my attachments in existing mails. While the task running on attachment was not finished I was able to click 'Get Mail' and see a task for it.
    - Once the task for attachment was finished, 'Get Mail' stopped working and no new task appeared in the activity viewer each time I clicked the button
    - Quit Mail.app and ran it through terminal.
    - When caching the attachments, I saw an exception about an absurd size in one of the attachments and some lock issues (sorry didn't copy the exception at that time)
    - Sorted my mail by attachment and looked for a mail for an attachment with a strange size.
    - While I did not saw anything weird in the sizes, when I went over one of the mails, got again the exception in the terminal.
    - Deleted the mail, restarted Mail.app
-> And everything started working fine
    Conclusion:
    - Either a bug in the Mail.app code or a faulty attachment can create a lock between threads, preventing then a normal functioning of the application... (sorry I did not kept the attachment)

It's not related to a third party app. I don't have any.  The tech was able to pinpoint the folder in the Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes
He said they have had reports of this bug and he went directly there. So they must be aware of it.

  • How to prevent mail app on OS X & iOS from automatically marking email messages as read just when they are selected either intentionally or not

    Good morning guys
is there a way to prevent mail app on OS X & iOS from automatically marking email messages as read just when they are selected either intentionally or not
    thanks

On OS X, You are able to hide the preview window on the right in normal mode, or on the lower side in classic mode, by simply putting your cursor on the thin bar which is in between, and then make it as small as possible, so it goes away.
Then your messages won't be automatically read when clicked once, but only if you click them twice and a new window with the message opens.
Also, you are able to mark them as unread again, which is a silly workaround, but possible.
You can do that by right clicking and select 'Mark as...' -> unread.
    On iOS, I'm not sure..

  • Help Getting AOL mail through my mail App

I was wondering if there was anyway that i can get my Aol mail to go through the mail app on my computer
    ?

    Hi Big_papa!
These are the settings, for configuring Apple Mail with AOL mail.
    -Account Type: IMAP
    -Incoming Mail Server: imap.aol.com
-Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.aol.com:Your AOL Screenname Here
    -Server Port: 587
You can also use the utility AOL® Service Assistant, which can be downloaded from this website AOL Macintosh Downloads.
"The AOL Service Assistant enables you to set up the following Apple applications to work with the AOL service:
    • Mail - The AOL Service Assistant makes it easy to configure Mac OS X Mail to send and receive AOL mail. If you've used the existing AOL for Mac OS X product, you can also import your incoming and outgoing messages from your Personal Filing Cabinet into Mail.
    • iChat - You can now easily set up iChat to work with your Screen Name.
    • Address Book - Using the AOL Service Assistant, you can now easily import your AOL Address Book contacts into your Mac OS X Address Book without bringing in duplicate entries.
    • Safari - AOL Service Assistant enables you to import your Favorite Places into a folder in the Safari Bookmarks Bar."

  • How can I automatically sync my IMAP (AOL) Mail to the Mail App

I have an AOL mail account and I use the Mail App on my Mac to check my mail and so on.
My question is how do I keep all the Mail (including messages and attachemtns) on the AOL Server as a copy on my Mac Hard Drive.
For examples, I have 20 Sub-Folders on the AOL Server, can they automatically since to duplicate folders on my Mac?  Or is there an easy way to do it.
Currently, I am manually moving my messages to the folders I created in the "On My Mac".
There must be an easier and automatic way to do this that I am missing right?  We are in 2014!
