Prevent app launching on startup
Running Yosemite, I now suddenly have an app that launches itself automatically on startup. However, I don't want this.
I've tried the following:
1. Checked in System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login items. It's not listed there and never has been to my knowledge.
2. Checked in the app itself. It doesn't have any setting whereby it launches itself on startup, and it's never exhibited this behaviour before.
3. Right-clicked on the app's Dock icon and made sure that "Open at Login" is NOT selected.
4. Made sure that, when I shut down or reboot, the "Reopen windows when logging back in" option is NOT selected.
5. Deleted the app and all its associated preference files, rebooted, then reinstalled the app.
Despite trying all the above, the app insists on launching itself on every reboot, even after I've deleted and then reinstalled the app.
Anybody got any clues what I might try next? I'm comfortable with fairly technical stuff (examining preference and library files, executing Terminal commands), but just don't know where to look.
Thanks for any help!
I've found the answer!
I had added output from this app to the Notification Centre function in OS X and so, naturally, OS X was "waking up" this app on login in order to get the necessary data to display in the Notification Centre. Removing the app from the Notification Centre removed the problem, it no longer opens itself on login now. So, this is not so much a "problem" as by design.

"Shared library error" prevents app launch
Did the upgrade to 10.4.10 this morning, via the Software Update panel. Upon restart, attempts to launch Microsoft Word / Excel or FileMaker results in:
Application Launch Failure
The application "Word" could not be launched bceause of a shared library error: "2 <Microsoft Word> <CarbonLib> <CFMPriv_CarbonSound> "
I'm out of my depth here. I've repaired permissions, but no dice. Any advice?
(Many other apps - browsers & email, Adobe, Macromedia, Digidesign - launch fine.)Well, this has blown into a bit of a 'situation,' I'm afraid, mostly because I don't have my 10.4 DVD. (Seems I left it at the office when I left some months ago. They can FedEx it to me, but as they're closed Wednesday, I won't get started until Friday.) The only system disc I have is my 10.1.3 installer, and I suspect I'll open several new cans of worms if I jump that far backward.
The G5 now won't boot at all. I can start it in FireWire target mode from the G4, and can see all the data on my hard drives. When it's turned on by itself, the panel light and the fans all look and sound the way they should, but I get to a screen that reads Mac OS X and a progress bar that never progresses – i.e. a white strip that goes nowhere.
I also can boot the G5 into Terminal (or whatever you call it when I open with Opt + Cmd + O + F), but don't know my way around it. Didn't do anything there except remove the CD.
A friend tried posting me a copy of his 10.4 disc 1 for me to use, but it seems the Apple folks knew we'd think of that. Whatever the technology, I can mount it but can't boot from it. (Or maybe that's Toast? I see that their help page reads, "You cannot make a bootable Mac Volume disc.")
Repaired & Verified permissions on the G5 before it locked me out. Looking at it from the G4 confirms that it at least thinks that 10.4.10 was successfully installed; I'm now downloading the 10.4.10 combo update. (I hadn't realized until I was already typing this that I should try running it on the G5's system drive, from the G4.)
I'm just posting this in case someone who's been willing to read this far spots some magic bullet that I'm missing. -
Is there a way to prevent apps from reopening on startup?
I like to shut my computer down without closing each app but I don't want to have them all reopen on start up.
Is there a way to prevent apps from reopening on startup without having to close them all before shutting down?
I found the checkbox to prevent apps from opening in their previous state but they still open to their previous state after a restart.
Thank you in advance,

What is the "iTunesHelper" App that is set to launch at startup?
What is the "iTunesHelper" App that is set to launch at startup?
What does it do? Do I need it, or is it something I don't need or want?
It is not only set to start at startup, but it is also set to be "invisible".It's inside the iTunes package.
Control-click on iTunes and choose 'Show Package Contents'
Then navigate to Contents>Resources. iTunesHelper itself is also a package.
The preferences and .plist files don't give me a clue about exactly what it is doing.
The link provided by William is a possible (and plausible) explanation.
Afaik there is no official document from Apple, explaining what it does.
If you disable it, your iPod (if you have one) will not launch iTunes if necessary.

Slower Startup and Slower app launch time
Hi, ever since i upgraded to lion, my app launch times and laptop startup times have gotten much slower. Please Help!
Re:I have noticed more frequently since the 4.3.2 upgrade is a longer delay when I launch the "Settings" App.
(in response to Bruce Caucutt)
I have noticed the same response since I upgrade to 4.3.2 - I have reset the phone after shutting down all the Opened Apps, no change. Checking this out a bit more I found that the 4 sec. White screen only appears if you are Launching the Settings App first time, there after it appears almost instantly. It seems it just taking a little longer to launch in the first instance. -
My built-in iSight (first 17" intel iMac) is "in use by another application" when I attempt to use it from iMovie, iChat, or Photo Booth. When I tried disconnecting everything and rebooting, I discovered that iPhoto is launching at startup.
The only thing I can think of that has changed recently is a system update about a week ago, including 10.4.8 and whatever apps were updated.
iPhoto is not set to launch in either the StartupItems folder or my user's login items. It also does not show as checked when I ctrl-click on it in the dock.
So far I've tried resetting the PRAM and installing MacOSXUpd10.4.8Intel.dmg to no avail. I see a reference to a "Combo Update" in another unrelated thread (network problems). Does anyone recommend this? Or am I just hosed until 10.5 comes out.Problem solved. It was a digital camera driver which is no longer compatible since the new update.
03: Check your system console and see if you have any malloc errors. Are you using anything you had to install drivers for? You get the starfish for being considerate enough to reply. I hope you get it worked out. -
Finder won't launch at startup
What's the best way out of a problem which stops the Finder launching at startup? I have no idea why my recently clean-installed system seems to spontaneously start corrupting in the middle of innocuous tasks but here's my own grisly log of this issue:
1. Erase Boot Camp partition
2. Create new Boot Camp partition
3. Install Windows XPsp2 and Apple Boot Camp drivers
4. Boot into Windows, install 2 apps, all ok
5. Boot into Mac Os
6. Disk Utility Verify Disk reports all ok
7. Repair permissions
8. TextEdit freezes while saving to desktop
9. Finder is inaccessible although cursor moves
10. Force power down
11. Reboot but icons don't load and menubar is incomplete and transparent
12. Message: Finder quit unexpectedly on startup
13. Message: SystemUI Server quit unexpectedly on startup
14. Finder Report:
Identifier: Finder
Verdsion: ??? (???)
Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
Crashed Thread: 3
(unable to scroll to remainder of report)
15. Repeat 10-14 above with same result
16. Boot into external FW drive (10.5.1)
17. Very slow
18. Click on Disk Utility in Dock and it disappears in puff of smoke.
19. Open DU from Applications folder and Verify Disk reports internal Mac partition is ok
20. However DU unable to verify new Boot Camp volume as it "could not be unmounted".
21. Open Boot Camp volume but no files or folders visible.
22. Repair permissions on internal Mac disk.
23 Reboot into internal Mac partition
24 Repeat 11-14 above
25. Force power down and reboot into Safe Mode
26. Repeat 11-14 above
Does anyone have a clue what might be going on? Meanwhile, is there anything short of (yet another) system reinstall which might fix it? I have a Time Machine backup - not as current as I would like but that may be A Good Thing. But I keep having issues with this iMac after 5 weeks of perfect running... ever since the 10.5.2/Graphics/Quicktime 7.4.1 updates to be precise.
Is it conceivable that my symptoms are hardware related? Even after a zero erase and full reinstallation a week ago, I can't seem to keep the machine running properly.
I have a very similarly configured Intel MacBookPro which has behaved impeccably - but it is still running 10.5.1.
Thanks for any help.
Simon
Message was edited by: pr100Well, there has been a resounding silence so I guess y'all are out enjoying your weekend instead of poring over the forums.
Just to follow on with the next chapter: I booted one more time into my external drive and ran DU Verify Disk on my startup volume again. It passed it as OK. I then ran DiskWarrior 4.1 over the disk. It also passed it as OK. Finally, I ran all the TechTool Deluxe 3.12 hardware tests and the big one failed. It reported problems with the volume structure and attempted (but failed) to repair the Leaf Record Count in the Catalog B-Tree.
I guess it's possible that TT was wrong and the others were right but in view of the problems I'm having, I figure TT has to be right. So I'm now writing zeros to the Mac partition and will restore from Time Machine to a week-old backup which was carefully checked before backing up.
I just wish I knew what caused these problems. This is the second time in a fortnight that I have had to erase and reinstall - and it's becoming a full time job! Anyway, this is definitely the last time. If the disk goes kaput again, Apple can have my iMac back.

Stop auto launching at startup??
How do I get Spotify to stop auto launching at startup of my desktop? I have looked all over and cannot find the option.
Thanks. Here's another "me too" followed by what I've done so far. In Windows 7, about three weeks ago my Spotify started loading at startup.I checked preferences, for some reason the option had changed on its own to load at startup. I reset to "do NOT load" at startupThe next time I rebooted, it started up on its own again. I checked settings, they had changed back again. Again I fixed my preferencesThe NEXT time I rebooted, it happened again! This time I not only changed the setting back to NOT load at startup, I also opened MSCONFIG and checked the TWO, count-em, TWO entries of Spotify to prevent loading at startup. Pop up box suggested restartiing the computer. I did, no Spotify loaded. Yay...for now...however,Two hours later I took my laptop with me on a business visit. When I turned on the computer, Spotify loaded AGAIN.I again opened MSCONFIG and found FOUR, count-em, FOUR entries of Spotify I had to check to prevent loading at startup. This is getting very frustrating. It's my belief that some recent upgrade to Spotify is causing this, as it only started a few weeks ago. Someone with Spotify needs to check into this! Help me Obi Wan!!

Dock won't launch at startup for all users
Any thoughts on why the Dock app won't launch at startup. This happens for both my admin account and the guest account. I am running OSX 10.8.2 on a 2008 MacBook Pro. Previous to this issue I had been messing/deleting the plists associated with the Dock (as per other discussions) because of the Dock process taking up 100% of the CPU and getting the box hot. This issue has of course resulted in the Dock not appearing, as well as Alt-Tab not working, reminders not working menu bar, and other Dock functions. I can launch the Dock app via the terminal but it's still wonky, like the iTunes (newest) GUI doesn't function and the DVD player won't work (seems to be a similar GUI issue). For now I've stuck the Dock app in the users login preferences but that's a bad work around since there are the other symptoms that are still going on.
Thoughts?Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application (Dock) or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful. -
No Internet Connection Before Login Apps Launch
I have exhausted every known procedure to try and get an internet connection before my login items (Mail App & iChat) launch.
I didn't have this problem with my G5 w/Mac OSX 10.4.8. At startup I could watch the blue screen and startup progress bar. During the process I got an "Establishing Network Connection" message (or something similar) and then the computer would continue to boot. Mail and iChat would launch and my mail would be retrieved and I chat would become available.
On the Pro Mac I get no notification at all on what's happening. It boots normally, Mail and iChat startup and I get a dialog box that says I'm not connected to the internet.
Within a few seconds I can hit the 'get mail' icon and mail is then retrieved, I also have to select a "Available" from iChat to log on.
The problem is that the internet connection is not recognized until the boot process is completed.
Side note: At startup I get the gray screen with the Apple logo for about fifteen seconds, the screen flashes to blue and for a fraction of a second a dialog box pops-up and says "Starting Mac OS X" before my desktop appears with all my login items open. On my G5 it use to say "establishing network connection" or something similar.
I suspect this has something to do with my problem.

I have a valid ethernet ID and is configured automatically.
I have not modified any other setting.
My cable modem is connected directly to the ethernet port. It's the same modem I used with the G5.
I have discussed this with Apple's Tech Support on two occasions and they couldn't come up with a solution.
Before I call for an appointment with my local Mac Store for a diagnostic test, I would like to hear from anyone who has had a similar problem or can provide a solution.
Thanks
Don JusiakHere's a theory: the Mac Pro starts up much faster than an older computer and therefore applications and system are loaded before the network has finished initializing. So perhaps that is all there is to it?
I'm not at home right now (and therefore no access to my Mac Pro) but I will add some network-aware programs to my login and see what happens and report back.
The suggestion to turn off automatic login is probably a good one as this will give the system more time to get the network up before apps launch.
Alternatively, there is a program called "Lingon" that you can use to re-order the system startup items. This might be useful in changing the priority of the network/dhcp status. Again, I will look in to it at home and report back. -
Since upgrading to OS X Lion, Mail launches upon startup. I don't want this to happen. I use gmail through my browser for my mail services. I looked in Login Items under Users and Groups within the System Preferences, but Mail isn't listed in the box of items at startup. Does anyone know how to turn this thing off? Thanks!
TBMBy default Lion restarts all applications that were running when the system was shut down. Quitting Mail now should prevent it from appearing on restart.

Word app now launches at startup since I installed Lion. How do I remove? Similar question, also Brother printer utility launches every time but would like to remove.
Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. If you don't get it solved here check out the MS forums: http://www.officeformac.com/ProductForums/Word/

At one time I checked a box that asked if I wanted QuickTime to launch at startup. I now want to not have it launch, but I can't find anyplace to do this. I checked both QuickTime preferences and System preferences. Can anybody help? Thanks!
Okay! That did it. I did have the Flip4Mac WMV on the list of login items. It wasn't checked, and none of the other apps on the list (besides Suitcase, which was checked) opened at startup. But it makes perfect sense that this would launch QuickTime. Thank you so much!!

Lots of apps crashing at startup - only on ONE account
Hi,
i've got a serious probleme that seems to be caused by some corrupted preferences or settings in my "Library" Folder.
Mail, Pages, and some other non-apple softwares won't start -better said :icon bouncing, app loading, app launched for 1/4 sec and then quit.
This is very critical since I can't access my work files from this account... I need to copy them into another one, where the SAME apps DO WORK perfectly !! I tried to delete the prefs (com.apple.**), i also tried to replace the library folder with my last week's backup, but it didn't solve anything.
The only way to get my apps working was to DELETE the library folder... thus losing all my precious setting
Any way to get me out of this ?
Thx in advance
FloIf it truly is corrupt preferences then you don't really have much option but to delete the corrupt files and start afresh (or copy back on from your backup). Since these seem to work from another account that would strongly suggest it is corrupt preferences files, though it is suspicious that they are suddenly all corrupt.
I would also recommend at least trying to repair permissions, and maybe just verifying your drive to make sure something else isn't happening.:
Boot from the installer disk, select language if applicable, choose utilities, run Disk Utility and verify (and repair if necessary) the drive. Then repair the permissions on your computer. You can also repair permissions from DU on your main drive while booted, but to properly verify and repair your drive you have to run it from a drive other than the boot drive. A limited repair is also performed as part of a Safe Mode boot.

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."

Creative Cloud (app) crashes on startup after update
After the last update (which probably went wrong), creative cloud application (the menubar app) crashes on startup.
I've tried uninstalling (uninstaller stalls) and running Creative Cloud Cleanup Tool but to no avail.
Below I've included an excerpt of the crash report from the log (I could post the complete log report but that seems to cause troubles posting).
Anybody have any suggestions?
