Prevent certain USB devices from receiving power

I need to prevent devices such as cellphones from receiving power from a USB port while at the same time allowing for other devices that we use in the enterprise to function correctly. I have been unsuccessful in my research. I would like to have this
all done on the local clients so that I can add it into the image for the enterprise. Any help is appreciated.

Hi JustIT28,
As far as I know Windows don’t have the USB device type detection ability, may you can ask your computer hardware vendor for the further help, or you can Bing
the USB security software keywords then choose some third party USB security management software.
I’m glad to be of help to you!

  • Error message: "Remove USB Device from printer."

I have an HP Photosmart 309 a All-In-One.  It is attached to my desktop computer, which utilizes the Windows XP system. I've owned the All-In-One for about three years. I do not use the All-In-One -- or this computer -- very much. (I mostly use my laptop.)
I have not made any changes to this computer and/or All-In-One in quite some time. This error message is new. I do not have a USB device attached to the printer.  Even with the error message displayed, the All-In-One allows me to print, but it will not allow me to make a copy or scan.  How do I make this error message go away?  What's wrong with my All-In-One?  Thank you for your help!

    Hi DuckLakeSue,
I understand that you are getting an error message to 'Remove USB Device from printer'. Follow the steps provided in this link by the PrintDoc to determine if your wireless radio has failed.
I hope this helped, let me know.
    Thank you,

  • Is it possible to format an USB device from Applet on ExFAT file format?

We have a requirement in our project to format an USB device from Applet on ExFAT file format. I am beginner in JavaFX2 and not sure whether this can be handeled using Applet. Can somebody hep me on this?
    Thanks in Advance !!!!

The only way you could possibly do that is by using some native library (accessed with JNI/JNA), or by running somekind of command from Java (using for example Runtime.getRuntime().exec()).
There is no Java API to do as you want as Java in general provides only an abstractiion of the underlying system which is not detailed enough for this kind of low level functions.

  • G580 Problems re-booting if certain USB devices still attached

I have had several instances when my laptop has failed to boot up - it does that horrible long-winded attempting to restart palaver with scary messages. So far I have always got it up somehow, eventually. This seems to happen if I leave certain USB devices plugged in - they work perfectly fine on my other, cheaper, down-level, laptops, but cause my G580 to completely lose the plot.  It is probably my USB 2,0 hub, but might also be my USB 2.0 cheap keyboard. I know the solution is to remove these devices and shutdown before it gets the chance to lose the plot - but is there a fix so that this isn't necessary?

i have had plenty of experience with this exact problem, except mine was worse as even if i plugged ina  usb mouse it wouldnt work, and weird things like caps lock locking my mouse movement happenbed anyways.
The fix was to buy a PCI -> USB card, a PCI card with 4 usb ports basically, it was under ten english pounds and fixed all my usb problems.
This is the one i got btw

  • K8N Neo Platinum, USB devices keep losing power

    I have a K8N Neo Platinum with a 3000+ AMD 64 chip...
I have a USB problem whereby my wireless USB adaptor just keeps losing power, when I look at the adaptor itself all the power has gone and no lights are on. Unplugging the device and re-inserting it does not get any response from windows. Also, after this has happened, my other USB devices (ie mouse) continue to work fine UNLESS I unplug them and re-insert them. If I do this they also will not power back up. I've tried various adaptors from Netgear and alll of them have the same problems, its like they are causing the USB on my system to fail.
This happens with both the motherboard rear ports and the case front ports and is really driving me mad. Running XP Pro SP 2
I have this problem a couple years ago, and now I've gone back to using the same machine after a reformat the same is happening again. I've installed the latest nFoce drivers and in device management I've turned OFF power management for the USB Root Hubs but it's still happening.
    Any ideas?

Check to see if there is a wire running from your Front USB ports to the #10 slot of your USB block which connects to the motherboard header.
USB connector block layout which corresponds to the pin layout on boards with the Intel spec for USB. Do not cut the pin on the MOBO. You are removing/cutting the wire to the connector block from the case.
    2 4 6 8 10(this wire, #10, not needed)
    1 3 5 7 9(filled/key)
If you find a wire leading to the #10 spot on the block, remove that wire. My block has tabs so that you can pull the wire out, or you could snip/cut the wire leading to that position--if you cut the wire, be careful to cut the correct one and cut it in such a way that it may be repaired if you make a mistake.  Make sure you wrap the wire, the exposed end/s, you remove/cut with electrical tape so as not to accidentally cause a short. I actually folded the wire back and wrapped it.
2 posts to read--Here and Here.
This seems to be a common issue involving many different case manufacturers. I don't know how it applies to other MOBO manufacturers, but in these forums it is not limited to a specific MSI model or supported chipset(Intel or AMD).

    Netgear WG121 & WG111T wireless adaptors.
any ideas? I'm planning to reformat and rebuild otherwise

I don't know what you mean by USB wireless adapter, but if you mean a USB wireless Hub, it could be the following: If you are plugging the Hub into a USB port on your case, the case USB wiring maybe different from your motherboard, and is grounding out your hub.
This happened to me, I have a K8 Neo Plat board in an Antec case, the USB pin configs are different; and my case ports won't work. They gound out all my USB ports if I leave them plugged into the board. I moved my self powered USB hub to a back USB port and disconnected the front USB ports from the motherboard and now it works fine.
Another reason for the problem could be that you have so many USB devices plugged into your board that you are overworking your power supply. This happened to me too. I have six ports available on the board and I'm using them all. This caused my PSU to overheat. I had to go to more power.
I don't think it's a Windows problem, unless Windows is losing track of the devices. If they show up in your Hardware Profile but still don't work, I don't think Windows is the problem and reinstalling it won't help.
But, if you have installed SP2 over XP SP1, that could be the problem. You may need to do a clean install of SP2 and then reinstall the drivers for all your USB devices. I would get the latest drivers for everything from each mftrs web site.

  • Qemu/kvm: multiple USB devices from the same vendor

    Hi fellow gurus,
Trying to pass-through two USB devices. One works just fine, but two produces an error.
They are the same type from the same vendor and libvirt seems to have no way to differentiate between the two, as it only uses the <vendor id='0xnnnn'/> & <product id='0xnnn'/> strings and not serial number of the device.

As I understand it, host:bus.addr is an alternative to host:vendor_id:product_id. So if I wanted to pass both of these thumb drives:
    $ lsusb
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1e3d:2093 Chipsbank Microelectronics Co., Ltd CBM209x Flash Drive (OEM)
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 1e3d:2093 Chipsbank Microelectronics Co., Ltd CBM209x Flash Drive (OEM)
I would use host:001.002 and host:001.003 . Note I said would use, because I've never tried it.
And usb_add is a qemu monitor command. See sections 3.4 and 3.5 of the doc you linked for info on the monitor.
All this being said, I don't use libvirt stuff so I don't know if it has the capability to specify USB devices by bus.addr or whether or not it enables the monitor.

  • USB device has exceeded power limits of its hub AND no sound

Yesterday no sound, but worse...Trying to connect to computer to charge gives me the message "A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub power. Clicking on the balloon states "A USB device has malfunctioned & exceeded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device." Plugging into the wall charger states "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone...want to change to Airplane mode..." Is my iPhone dead? Ideas please. Thanks

Hi, Did you every get a reply? I'm having the same issue. The phone was working fine yesterday. Now, the button doesn't work and I can't sync it to restore it because I'm getting the same USB power limit message.

  • Disable forced bitlocker encryption for certain USB devices

Is it possible to specify certain USB removable devices to not be Bitlocker encrypted?  Example - A GPS so the user can do updates.  I didn't see any way to do this via policy.

No, the reason is this, bitlocker is not going to make any difference between the devices based upon the hardware ID; it only takes the class of the device while applying the policies.

  • Leopard 10.5.6 Causes Apple Keyboard USB Devices to Lose Power While Asleep

My Apple keyboard's left usb port does not supply power to any device connected while my mac is sleeping. I have my iphone connected there to charge at night while the machine is sleeping --to save power. Before updating to 10.5.6 this was not an issue. This problem has been noted by others, but I have not yet seen a proper solution. Can anyone help?

Just want to add my name to the list. This is exactly the same thing I've experienced with my iPod Touch 2nd gen. I started noticing the battery was half gone when I left it plugged into my keyboard USB port while the iMac was in standby mode. It was always fully charged +before the 10.5.6 update+. I've now had to remember to disconnect every time my iMac enters sleep mode. Which is, of course, annoying.

  • AEBS prevents my USB drive from spinning down

    Hi all,
I thought I would share my concerns about connecting USB external drive with AirPort Extreme. I've seen several post here talking about that issue, but they didn't solve my problem.
Otherwise great product, AirPort Extreme n prevents my WD MyBook 500GB disk from spinning down when not in use. I bought that particular disc, because of its ability to go to sleep when not accessed for a period of time. It works great when connected to my MacBook via FW400 or USB 2.0, but when I use it via AiPort Disk utility and connect to AEBS the disk will not spin down, keep running and getting hot. I am concerned with that fact, because it consumes more energy and will shorten disc life (yes, it is not a server graded disc, as most of USB ones, and it was not designed to spin continously).
I read some posts about Spotlight indexing the drive, but that is not true because of three facts:
    - when connected via USB 2.0 or FW400 the disc spins down.
    - when I left it for two hours it was still spinning - Spotlight should have finished indexing by then right?
    - even if I eject network drives from the Desktop, breaking the connection with my MB it is still spinning.
There seems to be a problem with AE itself. AEBS seem to keep the disc busy all the time or the disc thinks that's the situation.
From what I've read this is not MyBook only case. People with Lacie, Maxtor and other brands are having the same problem.
At this point I have no solution to this. I disconnected the drive and access it via FW400 only. That's a shame, because Apple advertises AirPort Extreme using USB drive connectivity as a major selling point. I think that situation is unacceptable. A disc spinning 24/7 is asking for trouble.
If someone has a solution to that problem, please share it with the forum readers, if not we will have to wait for Apple to fix this. I hope someone from Apple is reading this.

Other posts indicate you can solve this by privatizing the drive in Spotlight's preferences. I haven't tried this because I like the drive indexed--it is a shared data drive after all.
I turn the drive off manually when I'm not using it. Unfortunately, the Airport doesn't recognize the drive (or printers that I've turned off, for that matter) when I turn it back on. The only solution I've found is to restart the Airport. Any ideas on this problem?

  • Preventing External USB's from sleeping

I have 9 external USB HD's connected to my 24" iMac, mostly vis hubs. They constantly go to sleep and when I try to download a file via Firefox or Safari, there's an extended wait while the browser tries to make a connection and the drive wakes up. I know they're not high speed enterprise class drives that are meant to always be on but the wait is annoying. Is there a way I can prevent some or all of them from going to sleep?

Depends on the HDs. Some, like Western Digital ones, have proprietary spin-down crapola software embedded within that can't be turned off. Talk to the vendors of those HDs.

  • HT5517 In multiple Apple TV's installation how can one prevent one iOS device from taking over the connection of another iOS device?

I am working on a system design where I would like to install 5 Apple TV's so when clients walk in with their iPhones they can connect to the network and be able to stream their audio to facility zone speakers where they will be working. But I am looking to prevent others from taking over that connection. I have never installed multiple Apple TV's in one site but I assume one would name them differently (Apple TV 1 - 5) when setting them up. I am also assuming when I walk in with my iphone and use the airplay I would see all 5 Apple TV's listed. Once I choose Apple TV 1 for instance, I do not want others to walk in and see Apple TV 1 on the list any longer so they do not have the oportunity to select it inadvertantly. Is this doable?

You can't remove them from the list, but you can set a password for airplay to each Apple TV
