Prevent .ichat files in Recent Items

Hey all...
Just started using iChat over Adium. So far, so good... but I'm noticing in my "recent items" (under Apple menu), it's filled up with .ichat files.
Is there a way to preclude .ichat files from showing up in Recent Items? I rarely need to go back to a particular chat, but often need to reopen a recent application file.
Thanks!
Charlie

Hi,
There is nothing in iChat that controls this.
Where does Adium keep saved Chats ?
iChat keeps them in a folder called iChats in the Users Document folder (Hard Drive/Users/(your account/little house icon)/Documents/iChats) by default.
If Adium does not keep them in Documents (even in a sub folder) then it may pay to change the iChat Location.
I have not tried to change the location in iChat for some time as it did not work that well in iChat 2 and 3.
It is set in iChat Menu > Preferences > Messages and the "Save Chats Automatically To (Drop Down)"
I just tried this in iChat 4 using the "Other" Option in that Drop down that lets you navigate away from the Documents folder and Create a new folder if required.
I created a new one on the Desktop (Called iChatDesktop to prevent naming issues).
However this still put them in the Recent Items list of the Finder
I had thought the Appearance Settings effected apps as well as th Finder > Recent Items lists
But reducing the System Preferences > Appearance to 5 Documents only reduced the Finder's list and not iChat's own list - even with a restart of iChat.
(On Checking I may have done that with Tinker Tool)
Tinker Tool does not offer any exclusion list either under the Finder or General sections/icons/tabs.

  • Documents (picture files) in Recent Items issues

My machine is a 2009 MacBook Air with Lion (10.7.3) and I just noticed recently that I can still open the JPG files in Recent Items even though I have already deleted those JPG files.  (When I click on the file name from Recent Items menu, Preview still opens the JPG file)
Does this have to do with Lion's Auto Save & Versions?  I have tried to search for the file, but I can't find where the file location is.  Is there a way to delete pictures completely?
I have searched for solutions, but I couldn't find answers directly to my issue.  Can anyone help me out?  Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for the help!
Going by your solution, I was able to find the file location.
I found out it's not because of the Auto Save & Versions, it is actually because of Messages (iMessage).  I received these pictures on my Messages and I guess the app automatically saves the pictures in the Messages folder when you receive picture files.

  • Strange files in Recent Items menu

I've been getting strange files in my Recent Items menu that I never opened. And when I try to open them, I can't. Here are some of the file names.
    AE39.staple
    GHAEA.staple
Does anybody recognize any of these kind of files?

As far as I understand it, the app is just an installer and it should only run once, to install the firmware on your DVD drive, but a lot of users have had problems with it running every time they log in (normally it should bring up a window). I tried running it manually and it does leave those same files in my Recent Items menu, as you described.
First take a look in your login items (System Preferences->Accounts) and look for a reference to SuperDrive Update 2.1. If one exists then deleting it should solve the problem. If you want, you can then move the app to the trash (although leaving it be does no harm). If it's not in the list, post back.

  • Custom shortcut to .vbs script has other .vbs files pinning to it as 'Recent' items (Windows 7)

    Hi guys,
More of a nuisance this, rather than a major problem, but one I'd like to take care of.
I have a split Access DB on a network drive, where the BE and a 'master' copy of the FE reside. I have multiple users, so for ease of distribution, I have a .bat file (also on the network) which I can distribute to each user when they want to start
using the DB. All the .bat file does is copy a shortcut to the users desktop and Start menu. The shortcut points to a .vbs file on the network.
The .vbs file checks the users local machine, creates some temporary folders if necessary, makes a local copy of the FE and launches it. All nice and neat, with a custom icon on the shortcut so my DB application looks quite professional, and is easy
    to find and launch.
However - I noticed the other day that, if I open another .vbs file (completely unrelated to my DB), Windows automatically pins it to the 'Recent Items' list on my custom shortcut on the Start menu. Simply because it is another .vbs file. I don't want any
'Recent Items' to be associated with this shortcut; it should only ever point to my DB and nothing else. I am worried my users will get confused when this random list of scripts grows out of it.
Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening on the end users' machines? Bear in mind - I don't want to block
all 'Recent Items' on their Start Menus - just for this one custom shortcut?
The .bat file (to create the shortcut) is below...
    Thanks

  • Why are files residing on sharepoint not showing up in Recent Items or Jump Lists?

I recently had to upgrade to Windows 7 (SP1) on my work laptop. I am running IE8, Office 2007, and Sharepoint 2010. I would use the recent file lists ALL THE TIME to jump to the latest documents that i had been using. (for example, Start > Excel >
Recent > file.xlsx). After the upgrade, i pinned Excel, Word, etc to the taskbar and the start menu. I can see recent documents, However, the jump lists do not contain any files that reside on Sharepoint - only those that are saved to my harddrive or my
mapped network drive. Interestingly enough, when i log into Excel application, for instance, the recent file list contains recent sharepoint files, C: files, and mapped drive files! I have tried to pin/unpin, allow recent, disallow recent, restart. i cannot
figure out how to see sharepoint files in my jump lists/recent items from start menu or taskbar. PLEASE HELP!
... not sure if this is related, but my recent places in Favorites does not contain any places from sharepoint either. only harddrive and mapped drive... Thanks!

    Hi,
The behavior might be caused by security reason. And it is only to Office 2007 suite. In Office 2010, the behavior has been changed.

  • A file shows up in my Recent Items, but I cannot locate it elsewhere

A file shows up in my Recent Items, but I cannot locate it elsewhere. When I click on it, nothing happens in Pages. Nothing, literally. It was located in Documents, but is now longer showing up there. Please help.
    SM

    Follow Alex's advice.
The Recent Items list is like the human memory and car keys. You know that you saw your car keys the last time you used them, but you cannot remember where you misplaced them — now that you need them.
Recent Items only knows where the document was at last use. If the document is renamed, moved, or deleted, that file activity is not updated in the Recent Items list.

  • Deleting "open a recent item" files

The screen that appears when you first open Dreamweaver 8 has
a list on the left that allows you to open a recent item. The ones
that are currently listed on my computer are no longer valid and I
would like to clear them. I have not been able to figure out a way
to do this so any help is appreciated - Thanks!

The recent files list is in the Registry of your computer.
If you just ignore the "no longer valid" list and keep
working with newer files, the newer file names will replace the
    older ones.
If you still want to mess around with things, and you're
    comfortable editing the registry values.
    start> run
    Type in : regedit
    In the console that opens
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER> Software> Macromedia>
    Dreamweaver> Recent File List
I would strongly recommend against messing around with the
registry values unless you're absolutely sure about what you're
    doing.

  • Modify Recent Items list

I open a lot of torrent files that I really don't ever need to open again.
I was wondering if there was a way to prevent these items from cluttering up the Recent Items menu.
I've looked at the com.apple.recentitems.plst but it just seems to be a list.
Is there a way to exclude certain document types from showing up in the Recent Items menu - sort of like you might with spotlight or a smart folder?
    thanks.

AFAIK, it's the norm. Recent documents only displays ones previously opened, not their current status or whether they still exist.

  • Recent items not working

altought recent items is set to none
when I open pictures, texedit or word docs
at least 10 previous files open up at the same time
this is really confusing and annoying
    safari 6 still *****
why does mountain lion have the same bugs as the first versions of lion ...

    It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
    Press return.
You can also accomplish this through the GUI by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State/TextEdit and delete that file…
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
    To turn off Resume globally...
    chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Press return
The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
The reverse of the second one is
    chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
Again, you can accomplish this through Finder by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting the folder.

  • Vista/Reader problems: Recent Items omissions + Adobe Reader Help menu freeze

This is Vista Home Premium 32bit; it came with Adobe Reader 8.1.2, which I fully updated, then replaced with Adobe Reader 9.0.0. Same problems either way. More info: Toshiba Satellite notebook, 3 GB RAM, 200 GB hard drive, AMD Turion X2 dual processor.
In about half the instances, a .pdf file that Reader has opened never shows up among files in the computer's Recent Items list (in the Start button). No idea why some do/some don't appear.
Also, both Reader versions freeze when one accesses the About option in the Help menu. Ctrl+Alt+Del is the only way out from that, apparently - not great. Only Reader freezes and requires using "End Task." All else keeps operating.

Yes I can create a short cut to internet exp. 32 bit on my desktop and I can even be using Internet expl. 32 bit, but when I try to open a PDF with adobe reader it won't work with internet exp. as my default browser b/c windows will always choose Internet exp. 64 bit which isn't supported yet by adobe reader.  With google chrome as my default browser windows can't choose an unsupported 64 bit browser in its place b/c google chrome doesn't have a 64 bit version.
My post was for those people who may not have realized yet that windows would not ever choose Internet expl. 32 bit over Internet expl. 64 bit if both exist on their system.  For them it is easiest to just choose a default browser that only has a 32 bit version.
If I understood your reply correctly, you were telling me how to create a shortcut to Internet exp. 32 bit on my desk top.  However, having that shortcut on my desk top and opening my browser through it will not prevent the problem of windows choosing my Internet exp. 64 bit browser for pdf's I try to open from the web.  Thank you for your response, but I think the problem that I have tried to explain does exist for many users and can only be fixed by using a 32 bit browser that is not Internet explorer as your default browser.  At some point if windows fixes the update that always chooses Internet expl. 64 bit over Internet expl. 32 bit, then this will all be irrelevant.
    Thanks

  • How do I remove "Recent Items" Documents from the apple menu?

I've been searching for an answer to this question for the better part of 3 hours now.  W
Several iterations of osx ago, there was the ability to separately limit how many recent items were shown for Applications, Documents and Servers.  Over the years, I simply installed a newer version of osx on top, and surprisingly my recent items always eliminated the Documents from the list.
I've since done a clean install of mavericks after installing an SSD, and i've lost this small but important part of my work flow.  No matter what I've tried to remove the documents from Recent Items, it always shows up.  I can still boot into my old HDD (which is now installed as a supplementary drive and also updated and running mavericks 10.9.2), and see from clicking on the Apple Menu > Recent Items that it only displays Applications and Servers.
Try as hard as I can, I can't simply figure out how to remove the documents from the recent items menu.  I've tried editing the com.apple.recentitems.plist file, to show 0 items for documnets, but this never seems to work.  (I've since read that this file is simply rewritten on logout.) Strangely, if I go into the old setup System Preferences, Recent Items:  it is showing as None.  I also suspect that maybe I used Tinker Tools or some other utility to change some command line preference (using the gui) several years back.  Not sure how I could investigate what would need to be done to compare files or otherwise figure out how to remove the documents section from the recent items menu.
It's starting to drive me crazy.  Anyone?

The Apple menu is at the top left hand corner of your screen, click on it and about this Mac is the first choice.
Click twice on Version to get serial number.

  • Is this normal to find Servers in "Recent Items"?

While I have been trying to save data on a crashed computer – the Desktop has disappeared and the Finder can't be found – I found something I have never noticed before.
On the menu at the top of the screen, when I click on "Recent Items" I find "Servers". Under "Servers", I find two blue colored drives called "Scan" and "SharedDocs".
I am doing file sharing at the moment but I don't use the names "Scan" or "SharedDocs".
Before my Desktop disappeared and the hard drive got corrupted, I wasn't doing any file sharing. All I was doing was backing up my computer. The backup failed though because the external drive got disconnected from the computer when the lid of the Macbook Air suddenly opened to 180 degrees (the hinge is broken).
I restarted the computer and attempted to backup the computer again but that failed and then the hard drive filled up all of a sudden. I did Disk Repair using the installation disc but that was when the Desktop and Finder disappeared. This is to give some background to what happened. I don't think anyone is spying on me but I don't remember seeing the Servers before under "Recent Items". Maybe they have been there all along but I haven't noticed them.

If I can help set your mind at rest, this is normal. If you look in the Finder preferences (if you can find them -- see below) they are fourth in the list of items to show on the desktop, and I would guess that this may be related.
The names you are seeing my be partitions on the disks you have been connecting to.
It sounds as if you have major disk corruption and the fact that it filled up suddenly suggests the Finder was unable to report the data correctly. If you have the data off (backed up) then you will lose nothing by trying to erase and then reinstalling the OS. If there are any problems during that process, it would indicate a defective hard disk and replacement is the best option.

  • I would like more than 10 recent items.

File > Open Recent Files> has 10 items in it, max. I would like to make this perhaps 20. Can't find a dialog in prefs.
Illustrator CS 4 Mac, OS 10.5. Is there any way to do this? (Can't upgrade this PPC machine to CS5.)

You can customise it by editing the AI Prefs file.
Inside the file, search for /maxRecentFiles 10 and change 10 to what you like.
