Prevent iWeb from downsampling on publish

Hello,
I am trying to use iWeb (v9 - 3.0.1) to share photo's with others. However when publishing iWeb always seems to downsample my pictures. While my eyes can't directly see the difference the size of the published photo's is half to a third of the original size of the photo.
Optimize on import setting is not enabled and when publishing, the setting is also to allow to download the original.
Checking the domain.sites2, shows the original size photo is in there so I can only conclude it is when publishing that the 'unwanted' downsampling occurs.
According to apple support this should not happen but I wonder as I can't get it to publish the original size picture. Tried different tenplate, new account, fresh iLife 9 install, iWeb8(204), try on OSX 10.4.11. Unfortunately result is always the same, it's not the original picture anymore
Does anyone know of a hidden setting (via terminal?) that will prevent downsampling when publishing the iWeb photo pages ?
Kind regards,
AAAD,

When you publish pictures in a Photoalbum you can set the download size in the inspector > second icon from the left.
Pictures that are used as illustration are resized to the displayed size on he canvas when published, regardless of how large the original is. And the original is stored in the domain file.
If you want to share the really original size pictures, put them on the server yourself and create a link to these pictures.
And if you cannot see the difference, who else can when they have nothing to compare.
Tried different tenplate, new account, fresh iLife 9 install, iWeb8(204), try on OSX 10.4.11.
Try a clean install.

    Hi,
I have some Python example files on my site. When anyone downloads them the files have ".sh" added on to the end of the file name.
Does anyone know how to convince iWeb not to do this?

  • How do I prevent CS4 from crashing opon opening without having to delete Flexnet Publisher.

When I open CS4, it crashes with out an error message box coming up.  The second attempt, it crashes with the message box saying, Error 150:30, Licensing for this product has stopped working.  I then have to go to the hard drive > library > application support > Flexnet publisher and delete it.  I then can open up CS4 and it stays open.  I have had to do this procedure for many months. I am using Mac OS.6.8.  Is there a way of preventing CS4 from crashing without having to go through this procedure?

If it crashes, you would get a crash report dialog.
It sounds like you either have a bad install, or a bad license.

  • Images enlarge and movies play in iweb, but not when published

Everything works fine in the program, but when published to site or folder, photos are there, but won't enlarge. The movie thumbnail shows with the little movie icon in the corner, but clicking does nothing.

On all of your pages  you have an image that appears to cover the photos preventing them from being clicked on.
Move it to the back via the Arrange menu or get rid of it.
How did you add the videos to the page?  If you just dragged them onto the page or used the movie page then iWeb will have to upload them when it publishes the page and all will load when the page is accessed which can cause long loading time for the page.
Also thre are some files missing for the TV page as seen in the Activity window (Command+Option+A) for the page. Publish the site to a folder on your hard drive and open it there.  Check to see if the movies play OK (after you fix that overlaying image issue). If they do then the problem lies in the uploading of the files.
If those files are Quicktime then the viewers must have Quicktime installed on their computer in order to view them.  See this page on Roddy's iWeb for Musicians site for methods of presenting movies that will let all computers view them: Player-Showcase.html.  See the list at the right for different players you can use.

  • IWeb still won't publish

Too bad they tied iPhoto to iWeb, because it just isn't working. It used to be so simple and easy to publish. Now I can't get iweb to work no matter what. I have deleted all the files (iweb)on my dot mac (read that helped someone else around here) I have taken my G5 off the router and gone direct to the broadband hook-up in my house (that helped someone else). No good. iweb hangs every single time. I had published about 5 times since I upgraded a month or two ago. The past week, it will not work.
Any idea why this is happening? I see other threads on it and suddenly things seem to start working. Is Apple messing and locking off bandwidth or something?

Mark.... two things always get in the way when publishing. Bandwidth/cpu usage and preference files that are corrupt.
    PREFERENCE FILE CORRUPTION
First... if iWeb is open, save your changes and quit... then follow this path to Hard disk/users/username/library/application support/iweb/DOMAIN
When you get to the DOMAIN file, click on it once while holding down the CONTROL key.
    Select SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS.
Inside this first folder, or an interior folder you will find a file called "assets.username.plist"
username in this file will be replaced by your user name on your local computer.
Drag this file to the trash and throw it away. if you preferences file is not corrupted it will be rewritten when you reopen the application, if it is corrupted, which appears to happen a lot, it prevents you from uploading successfully.
    BANDWIDT/CPU usage.
I've personally found that using your bandwidth, or someone else in your house using your bandwidth, can cause "time out" issues with an upload. I'm suspecting that it's at Apple's end, and that their server times people out if they don't recieve data in a minute or two. So.... if your spouse or kid is surfing the net, or downloading songs from itms.... then it will cause a publishing error. It's happened to me.
CPU usage also will cause your computer to slow, especially those of us in the g4 camp. So turn everything else off. Also... go to your system preferences and set your screen saver to NEVER, along with your energy saver settings to NEVER. Both of these didn't play well with iWeb 1.0, and still seem to cause problems with 1.1
Well, that's it, these two have always worked for me. and I publish a large (1gig) site.

Just in-case anyone els runs into this, I figured it out... I was working from my hotel and apperantly the fire wall was not allowing anything to uplaod, but I wasn't getting an error message from iweb, it would say that everything was published succesfully even though it wasn't. Once I went home and used my connection eveything worked fine.

  • A way to prevent photos from being downloaded?

I remember seeing an option one time about allowing people to download images on your site that you created using iweb but I never messed around with it. So is there a way to do something that would prevent people from taking your photos? I am asking because I do photography work. There are a lot of sites out there that won't allow you to right click your mouse and snag the photo. Just wondering if iWeb offered anything like that.

The only thing iWeb offers in that regard is, if your photos are on a Photos template page, you can set the "Photo Download Size" to "None" in iWeb's Inspector > Photos tab:
...Then the Download button won't appear. But iWeb doesn't prevent right-click downloading.

  • Can someone help explain why my iWeb website doesn't publish correctly...

I'm a professor and I'm trying to build a professional website--nothing fancy, six or seven pages and perhaps a blog. The site I have built on iWeb looks wonderful in iWeb, but once I publish the site (GoDaddy is hosting it), various text boxes, fonts, and background shapes get randomly distorted. Moreover, the site has different errors when viewed on my iPad, when viewed on my Macbook in Safari, and when viewed on Macbook in Mozilla. From what I've been gathering, web developers don't like iWeb. I'm not a computer expert, so I like the usability of iWeb (I'm not using any of their prefab templates--that might be the problem). I just want the site that I've built in the program (which looks good) to actually publish correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if it is just pointing to other software...
    Thanks!

What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?   Also if you're considering some serious blogging I suggest you create your blog on one of the established blogging sites like Posterous, WordPress or Blogger. This will allow you to manage your blog from any computer anywhere and even from some mobile devices.  With an iWeb blog you must have a Mac and the domain.sites2 file used to create the site.
Then you can embed that blog into one of your iWeb pages as shown on this demo page: Embed a Site Within an iWeb Page

iWeb has two other ways to publish your site...

... and the second method allows you a choice of how you upload the files...

The MobileMe only features can be replaced by alternatives...

If you have folders of assets outside of the main website folder on MobileMe, download them from the Apple server. From the Finder Go menu, follow the path iDisk/My iDisk/ to get there. Your website files are in the Web/Sites folder. Drag any files/folders onto the desktop.
Use an FTP application to upload these assets to the root folder on your new server...

There are lots of options for hosting for about half the cost of MobileMe...

If you have been using a web.me.com domain name, you need to register a new one. Most hosting services give you at least one free and registering with your hosting company will make forwarding and managing it a lot easier.

  • IWeb 08 crashes when publishing to folder

I've used iWeb from iLife 06 for a while now without any issues and upgraded to iLife 08 tonight. Unfortunately, when I go to publish my iWeb site to folder, it comes up with an "unknown error". Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

I just found the problem: iWeb 2 doesn't like the QTVR object video. There is no problem with the classics QTVR (panoramas).
To found the source of the problem, look at the last published page. Then, delete it and publish one more time.

  • I tried to implement photo albums using iweb and got a publishing error.

I tried to implement photo albums using iweb and got a publishing error. All was fine with my site until I added the photo album page. The software doesnt say what the error is exactly, only that it is a publishing error to my ftp
Exact message "There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider."
If I reduce the albums inside to 1 then it seems to work but that takes away from the usefullness of multiple albums.
my iWeb version is 3.0.4 (601)

Publish your site to a folder on your hard drive to see if the publication will proceed successfully and open the site locally with your browser to confirm all of the alums are there and work.  If they do try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
If you're still not able to publish from iWeb to your server download and use the free  Cyberduck to upload your website files to the server. Users have found that CD has been successful when iWeb had problems.

  • Comments show in iWeb, but not on published site (on Mobileme)

Does anyone know how I can get the comments I see on my blog entries in the iWeb app to show up on my website when published (I'm using Apple's Mobileme service).
They have always worked in the past, and I recently redesigned the site. I changed the theme from a predesigned one to the blank white one (and then designed my own look). As stated before I can see the people's comments in iWeb, but when I published all the previous entries (in the new design), the comments aren't showing in the archive page nor the individual entry pages. Is there a fix?

Oh, rats. Do I need to remove the folder that I published to? I'm not even sure where to find it. I have republished successfully with the comments still in iweb but they don't show up on-line. I'd really like to get them back on if possible.

Publish to a folder and then use an HTML editor to modify the files. The modified items can't be imported back into iWeb.

  • IWeb movie pages, when published -- no movies

my iWeb movie pages, when published, came up lame, no movies, only areas where the movies should have been, all with faint Q's with question marks inside them
LONG STORY SHORT, MAKE SURE YOUR MOVIES (as well as being located in your MAC HD and its proper MOVIE sidebar, that you CUT AND PASTE all your MEDIA YOU'RE USING IN YOUR iWeb SITE,
CUT AND PASTE PHOTOS, MOVIES in dupe form right into your desktop where you've published your iWEB site folder.......that way, any browser, a .mac or outside web host, can locate your media better so that you don't get GHOST MEDIA PUBLISHING LIKE I DID...hopefully this will help both of us
ALSO, in any iWeb website (named SITE in your desktop, or iDisc, or whatever or wherever you publish it, or even if you can find where on earth on your HD it is published, remember, if you have any MEDIA at all, NOTE IN MY CASE MEDIA MEANS MOVIES (not photos, so I'm not speaking to the photo blogs people, only iWeb MOVIE folks) anyway, all the compressed poetry video clips are right there, in a separate folder called MEDIA, that is every iWeb site, when published to .mac or a folder, which contains movies in .mp4 format or .mov format, all these will appear right in your site's MEDIA FOLDER....
this is important as a concept....
also, if you're using an outside web host like me (so that all my movies will LOAD QUICKLY), don't forget when FTP'ing (file transfer protocol'ing) your iWeb changes to your web host from your original MAC HD folder....remember to also send to the FTP/outside web host your MEDIA folder inside your SITE
(which i only realized a couple hours ago, and which totally was a revelation, so i'm passing it along to you guys)....
if you'd like to know exactly what i do here in nyc, i video the poetry scene, now for 20 years, and create educational poetry DVDs.... and my website is today's equivalant of operating a virtual business.....
....oh-oh, since I video poetry in NYC and go direct into a standalone DVD recorder to make single tracks of each poem...and then through Popcorn's mp4 program, I can make a movie file
then..through QuickTime Pro's streaming compression system, reduce that file size to under 5 MBs,
well, after lots of headaches, i am able to have 200 streaming video clips on an iWeb site, which apple itself said was impossible, that iWeb was only geared for less ambitious projects
okay, so that is cool..until yesterday, when i began the whole process again with completely new poetry video clips....
first, the iWeb pages were designed correctly...that took time....then i published the new pages to .mac, and only some of the movies showed up on the published pages, some had a big bright Q (which means the browser identifies the movie and will within 20 seconds load that movie), but what wracked my brain all day and night yesterday, why were there areas where the browser only showed the faint Q/Question mark inside (meaning the browser cannot find the movie)
    so what the.....!
also i'm going from an iWed Folder to an FTP so I can use an outside web host and bypass THE MUCH SLOWER .mac browser (too slow when using movie clips for visitor to your site having to wait valuable seconds for **** movie to appear...with outside web host process almost immediate)
    .....any similar experiences?

I am having the same problem.
Now I am using iWeb 2.03. So when I uploaded the site to my server I see the Media folder you were talking about, and the videos are there. But when I go to the website I still get the faint Q with the question mark.
    Here is my site. http://mnorland.dadeschools.net
The videos are supposed to be in the Athletics page, then go to football highlights.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to replicate bundle from Author to Publish

    Hi,
I have published a java bundle by right clicking and select 'Build Bundle' on the 'bnd' file, the bundle gets deployed properly on the 'Author' instance, but the 'publish' instance deploy failed.
The code currently works in 'Author'.
How do I replicate the bundle from Author to Publish? Does 'Build Bundle' only deploy the bundle to 'Author'? If yes, step by step how do I replicate the bundle to Publish?
    Thanks.

The canonical answer would be: Put the bundle into a CRX package (path: /apps/<appname>/install) and then upload the package to the instances you want to deploy the package.
If you want to transport that package via replication, it will work. But be aware, that then you deploy it to all publishs more or less in parallel, which might be an unwanted behaviour. The usual trick is to partition your publishs into 2 distinct sets. One set is active and receives requests by the loadbalancer, the other is idle and does not receive any requests from the loadbalancer in front of them.
Then reconfigure the replication agents pointing to the active set of publishs, and change their port to an unused one. This prevents that the replication is successfully working to this publishs, but the agents do still accept replication requests from the authors (but they are not executed). If you activate then the package, the package will be replicated only to the idle set of publishs and is installed there. Then switch the configuration for both sets of publishs and make the active set the idle one and vice versa. Now you only need to wait until the replication queues to the (new) idle set of publishs is emptry and the package is installed. Now all publishs have the new package installed and you can configure all replication agents back to "normal" settings.
That's a common deployment strategy used by many projects. If done properly you don't face any problems on your live site.
    cheers,
    Jörg
