Prevent Lightroom importing JPG JPEG

How can I make Lightroom import only RAW and not JPG files? (Some camera's require you to save a JPG next to a RAW to generate the best preview on the camera LCD)

Most cameras that shoot Raw offer the option to shoot Raw+JPG, or Raw only - but not all. My little LX1 is one that does not give the option, so I get this same issue.
If you are using some other method to get the image files into your computer first, and then using the Add option to put them into LR, then you can just leave out these JPGs at that earlier point. However, IMO it is more convenient to have LR do the importing as a single operation. The idea of manually deleting the JPGs from the camera card before safely copying the pictures into the PC, scares me too much to contemplate doing that.
LR does not offer any simple built-in solution here, except by selecting the option to show Raw and JPG as separate images instead of pairing them up (which is what people sometimes do actively want). Then the JPG can be either deleted after import, or else de-selected in the Import dialog and not included in the first place.
If you delete the unwanted JPG, outside LR, after import, LR will not complain - but may continue to (informationally) report the image concerned as "Raw+JPG", even though that is no longer the case physically.
I don't have LR in front of me now, but I am pretty sure there is a sort order option for the Import screen. So if you can separate the images on your camera card by their filetype, and if you know that there are no JPGs on that camera card that you want to import into LR, you can easily highlight the Raw files as a group - and then proceed to Import just those into the computer.
Or: if you are interested in shooting Raw only, you can set your camera JPG settings to the fewest available JPG megapixels and the lowest possible saving quality. This makes a dramatic difference to the JPG file size, and they may well then be accepted as doing no real harm (not treating them as separate images in that case, just as non-functional sidecar files).

  • How to import jpg in lightroom 5 (cc) without keywords

When I import jpg photos Lightroom automatically also imports all keywords. How can I stop this? The reason I don't want them is that I actually want to re-do all of my keywords/imports. I know it's a big pain, but I feel that it needs to be done, as I've learned how to do things more properly (in theory).
Lightroom 5.3 (creative cloud). Fully updated.
    Windows 7.

But doing them via your method (or likely the only method) means that small batches in this way wouldn't work (unless I'm simply misunderstanding, in which case I appologize!). But this way means bringing in a few hundred and getting rid of keywords. At that point there is no use in keywording because after I bring the next bunch in I would have to sort through all the keywords and get rid of them etc.
Batch 1 ... we agree this works, all imported keywords are deleted, then you add your new keywords
Batch 2 ... you just remove the keywords from the newly imported photos via the method I described. You do this by selecting the newly imported photos in the Catalog panel on the left, click on Most Recent Import (if it is not already selected, I think it might be selected by default after you do an import), then Ctrl/Cmd-A to select all of these photos, and then perform this operation. Only keywords from batch 2 will be deleted. The keywords that you added in Batch 1 will not be affected. Then add the new keywords to Batch 2.
    Batch 3 ... same as batch 2 ...

  • Weird and serious LR bug: jpg + nef becomes jpg + jpeg!

ok, this sounds very strange, but I'm experiencing some serrious issues with LR 1.1. I've done some shootings with raw (nef) + jpg with my Nikon D200 camera.
I import to LR using the default setting where LR keeps track of both files, but only displays the raw-file (but showing the text: "nef + jpeg" when hovering a thumbnail).
    So far so good.
But lately I've experienced some bad beaviour.
When browsing some of these folders with nef + jpegs in LR, suddenly LR starts to work threw the thumbnails, regenerating them a lot brighter (I'm NOT talking about the initial small "adjustment" LR does to raw files).
And when hovering the affected images, it displays "jpg + jpeg" (!) instead of the usual "nef + jpg" message!
I'm I the first experiencing this??
I tried to manually synchronize the affected folder to get it back to the right condition. It didn't work succesfully (reimporting the files, but not grouping jpeg and raw together, and affecting the jpeg files with wrong adjustments). Only fix seemes to be: remove all the images from the folder in LR, reimport the images, and do all keywording, adjustments and final preparations for the images ALL over again.
None of the files seemes to be damaged or corrupt. I've not changed any folder or file outside of lightroom.
Because I have to reimport all images when this happens (experienced it with two or three folders now), I loose all my adjustments and work with the raw-files. Thats totally unacceptable, and I hope there is a sollution to this.
    thanks for any help!

I too have come across this serious bug, which also occurs in LR 1.2 (see http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c051b42 ). I reported it on Adobe's bug reporting web page. It occurs when a folder is moved within LR and is difficult to recover from (the raw filenames in the lrcat are changed to .jpg). I have not had a problem moving selected photographs from one folder to another - just moveing an entire folder in the folder panel. My advice is not to move any folder within LR, move folders outside first, then go back to LR where the moved folder will be shown as missing (in red). Right click on it and use locate missing folder to restore the moved folder.

  • Importing jpg and CR files from HD

I have just started using Lightroom 4.4. In importing jpg or CR files from my HD,  I get "Preview unavailable for this file", although: 1) the jpg files were generated by using Photoshop CS4, 2) these photos can be "seen"  by Photoshop elements 11 and iPhoto. Any help?
    Mike

It is not a work around - it is a better workflow - shooting RAW plus JPEG and then deleting the JPEGs make no sense and have no value - shoot what you want and when you shoot RAW Photos makes a JPEG which you can access or export should you need it - shooting both is a waste of time, SD card space and disk space
to delete the JPEGs you can make a smart album with the criteria Photo is JPEG and delete the JPEGs by selecting a photo or photos there and holding down the command and motions keys and pressing delete

  • Importing older .jpegs, not getting renamed and not able to find in catalog

First, I love lightroom. I've been knee deep for 2 weeks and am over 33,000 photos as of this writing.
I am noticing the following when I attempt to import older .jpegs:
At import, I specify to convert to DNG, I know this doesn't work for .jpegs, to add to catalog, to put into files by shooting date, to rename to my custom naming scheme, to backup when importing, etc. I press import.
So when the import begins, all the thumbs have the error in the top right corner, "the photo xyz could not be used because the original file could not be found".
A folder for the date is created in the catalog but has 0 files in it.
So when I click in the prompt to locate the file, it takes me to the folder, and I notice that the file is there however it has not been renamed. It retains its original name from pre import.
The only files I've noted this happening were shot in 2000-2001 with a Sony DSC-S70 camera. I went to look at the original files in mac viewer and they appear to be fine, smaller than today's files, around 512k, 1280x960.
Again, I love Lightroom, so much so, that I've spent the last 3 days, working 12-14 hours a day getting my digital life in order.
This is the only kink I've experienced so far in LR.
So to summarize, during import, the folder is created, the old file namess are copied into it, but in the catalog the new file name is referenced, so when you look in the newly created folder, there are files there, but not with the new names, with the old names, and the file sizes are very small, like 32k, which tells me they aren't the files, but thumbnails of some sort?
I've tried different ways of importing, not renaming files, using original file structure, etc, but nothing has worked.
My theories... Are .jpegs before a certain date not supported? Are these files somehow corrupt? Are they locked?
Thank you very much for your help, when this first started happening, I just deleted the folders that had 0 images in them. Then when I started noticing a pattern, I made notes of the folders I deleted so I can go back in and fill the gaps in, and since then, I've begun tagging all the files that are having this problem since I figured out what was going on so I can hopefully go back in and remedy.
I am using an imac with 4 gig of RAM and LR 2.
    Sincerely,

ok, deleted all the problem images from the catalog and it is much more stable. I tried crashing it, and it held firm. This is very encouraging.
Took a look at the suspect files and folders.
Did what you said, copied into the folder, and then imported without doing anything, they came in fine.
Tried importing and renaming, for some reason still not working.
Living and learning, when importing thousands of images in hundreds of folders, I should have added the step of looking into each folder before importing. I didn't do this. I only looked at the previews in Lr import. When I went back in and looked in the folders, there are several junk files, thumb creation files from other browser programs, html files, other various files, etc. Lr skipped the majority of these junk files, but a few came in and actually caused Lr to crash immediately when the came into view on my monitor.
Were I starting from scratch, I would open each folder, organize it by type and size and then go through with the lightroom import portion.
The way I did it, I imported a lot of low res cropped that I used for web and email, and now they are in my Lr catalog and look like duplicates.
Now that the former prob images are in the Lr dbase, should I try and rename?

  • How can I import only jpeg and not jpeg plus RAW into Photos on iPad?

I capture both on my camera.  I do post-shoot processing on computer (Lightroom/Photoshop) but want to see larger previews on iPad (the "new" version with retina display) than my camera LCD allows.  I am using the Apple hadware adaptor to load from an SD card.  The RAW files are taking up way too much memory on the iPad--it seems Photos imports both files at once.  I can't figure our how to tell it to import only the smaller JPEG files.
If there is a better App than Photos for this, please advise.  Note I will not be doing any serious editing on the iPad.
    Thanks,
    Doug

It doesn't matter what App you use it will copy all the photos from the SD card.
    But I have a workaround;
All you do is import your JPEG+RAW images using the camera connection kit.
Go to Albums in the Photo App, choose Change, Choose New Album, give name, choose Last import, choose Select all photos, choose Finish.
Now go back into the photos app and delete all the photos from your "Last import" Album. It will say that it is going to delete them everywhere but really it doesnt because it leaves the JPEG in the new album. The result is that you will only have your JPEGs that you imported in your camera roll and the RAW images get deleted.
First try out before you delete photos from SD card!

  • CS3 - can't import jpg - files grayed out - Mac

I'm trying to complete a tutorial in Fireworks CS3 on Mac 10.5.6.
The step I'm stuck on is:
"Select File > Import and browse to the following folder on your hard disk:
    local_sites/cafe_townsend/fireworks_assets/
    Select banner-mockup.jpg and click Open.
An insertion pointer appears indicating where the upper-left corner of the graphic will be positioned."
None of the JPG files are selectable, they're grayed out.
Other files in that folder, TXT and PNGs are selectable.
Other JPGs that are not in the folder indicated are also selectable.
I can drag the file from Finder into the Fireworks document ok.
I've checked the Sharing & Permissions on the files and containing folders and they all have Read & Write.
I copied a JPG that was selectable for import elsewhere into the fireworks_assets folder, and it's still selectable (not grayed out).
The files were copied & pasted in an earlier tutorial step from a different folder (Macromedia Fireworks 8/Tutorial_assets).
Trying to import them from the original location also fails.
So it seems there's something specific to these JPGs causing Fireworks to not want to import them.
    I can't figure out what.
The specific file I can't import is attached.

Not sure why you can't import the file, I'd suspect something is goofed up with the actual JPEG if you can import other JPEGS with no issues. However, if you can drag and drop or  copy and paste the image into your Fireworks document then you're ending up with the same results the tutorial is aiming for anyway.

  • How do I stop Lightroom importing my Photoshop files?

Hi - I have asked this question elsewhere, but perhaps someone here has had a similar experience. In my Lightroom catalogue, I often need to open a raw (dng) file in Photoshop, work on it there and save the result as a jpeg. The jpeg is then sent to a client after which I have no further use for it, so normally I would delete it. However I find that every time I 'save as' in Photoshop, Lightroom imports that file into its database. The only exception is if I choose 'save for web' in Photoshop. I'm told that this behaviour is wrong - that LR shouldn't automatically import these images. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how do I solve it?
    (Mavericks, LR5.3, CS6)
    Thanks,
    Alex

I don't use Photoshop, but from what I've read, images sent to Photoshop via 'Edit In' should be 'Saved' not 'Save As'. The jpeg should then be exported from Lightroom.
I am sure there are those on the forum with a greater Knowledge in this process.

  • Develop settings when importing RAW + jpeg

When importing NEF files from my D700 I apply the landscape sharpening pre-set and am happy with the results.  However on my Fuji X20 I import RAW+jpeg rather than just RAW, in this situation if I use the landscape sharpening pre-set sharpening is applied to the jpeg as well as the RAW resulting in the already sharpened in camera jpeg being grossly over sharpened.  If on the other hand I use none for the develop pr-set no sharpening or noise reduction is applied to the jpeg and a minimum amount applied to the RAW file, more or less what I want except I want the higher landscape sharpening applied to the RAW files.  Is there anyway to modify the built in pre-sets so that they only get applied to the RAW files when importing RAW+jpeg pairs?
    Dave Rosser

I believe the answer is No, you cannot apply a preset at Import time based on file type.
What you can do is after you import, filter on File Type and set it to JPG and apply another preset that changes the sharpening settings of the filtered set of files, then go back and turn off the filter and work with both sets of images as you want.
To filter by File Type, you need to go to Library Grid, enable the filter bar with the backslash \ key if necessary, then select Metadata, and either change one of the existing filter columns to say File Type or add a new File Type column.
Once you have created and applied the filter, you can save it as a filter preset that can be applied by the filter preset selector at the very right and just above the thumbnail strip at the bottom, even in Develop mode.
You might make one for raw and for jpg in case you want to swap between the two, and if you shoot JPGs with more than one camera model, you can add the camera model to the filter criteria.

  • Question about lightroom import

I edit a DNG photo in Photoshop CC from lightroom 5.  If I save it as a JPG, it does not go back into lightroom.  I can not see the photo in lightroom to import it.  It shows in Windows explore but not in lightroom import.

If you save, it will go back to LR as a tiff or PSD,depending how you have your preferences set for external editing.
If you save as the saved file will not go back to LR, you will have to synchronize or import depending on here you saved the file.
My preference is to let the tiff go back to LR and stack alongside tthe orgonal raw file. Makes life much simpler when trying to find files.
If I need a jpg for email or other purposes I export one in the size and flavor (Prophoto, AdobeRGB, sRGB, etc) needed for the purpose.

  • Imported jpg probs - Urgent

Before I begin, I'd like to apologize in advance if this
issue has already been addressed in these forums.. I'd be suprised
if it hasn't, but i've looked all over, and cannot find the answer
    i'm looking for.
I'm using FlashMX 2004 Pro, on XP Pro SP2..
I'm creating a website demo/walkthrough that I wish to use
screenshots in. I've been creating the images in Photoshop, and
exporting them as jpeg, then importing them to Flash. I want to be
able to fade the screenshots (alpha) and have them enlarge/zoom in
on specific parts of the screenshots. Unfortunately, when I
preview/publish the swf, the screens are dithered and choppy. The
only way they look good is if I keep them placed at 100% size.
Since I want to be able to fade & resize the screenshots, this
is a problem. I've tried png as well, with no better results.
I've tried editing the properties of the imported jpg/png, to
keep the image quality lossless or at 100%, but no dice.
Can anyone out there possibly tell me what i'm doing wrong?
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, and put me forever in
    your debt.
    Thanks, -j

scaling bitmaps in flash (been discussed countless times,
surprised it was hard to find) is never
good - flash does not handle the scaling or even rotating of
bitmaps well. Always keep them at 100%.
If you must scale, then you can try:
play with the "smoothing" option in the properties for the
    imported bitmap (library).
    Add this to your first frame: _quality = "BEST";

  • IPhoto 9 (8.1.2 (424) and OSX 10.6.4) will not import jpg's

I purchased and installed iLife '09 yesterday. After downloading the latest software updates to iPhoto 9 (8.1.2 build 424) and OSX (10.6.4) I cannot import jpg's into iPhoto. It says "The file is in an unrecognized format." Under GET INFO, the file kind is "JPEG Image". This same photo imported just fine in iPhoto '08. Obviously, iPhoto '09 is designed to import jpg's. How do I fix this?

Thank you, that worked. I was able to import random jpg's, but NOT able to import any jpg from a scanned picture from my Lexmark X7675. They all failed, but other jpg's imported fine. So the problem is with the scanner. I downloaded the new drivers, but that didn't work. I'll now exit this forum and take up the issue with Lexmark. Thanks for your help.

  • LR 4 Not Importing RAW+JPEG

    Here's a strange one.
Currently running Mac OS X 10.7.3, LR 3.6 installed as well as the 30-day demo of the release version of LR 4.0.  Importing from a camera-formatted Sandisk 8GB Extreme Pro (45MB/sec)
    Camera - Sony A77.
Problem - Importing RAW+JPEG using LR4 only imports the RAW, not the JPEG.  I've already checked "Treat JPEGs as separate..." option in LR 4, yet when I pull up the import dialog about half the time I simply don't see the JPEGs next to my ARW files...only the ARW.  All import sorting options are off.
I can then simultaneously open LR 3 and upon attempted import, I'm presented with all files just fine.
Back to LR4 again, still only the ARW, even after "quitting" the app and reopening.
It gets stranger, though - As I was typing this, I went ahead and tried to import again in LR4 and THIS time JPEGs are showing up along side RAW.  I even double-checked to make sure I was using LR4's window and now LR 3.
    Anyone else having this issue??

Bumping this thread because I'm also having the problem. LR4 on Lion 10.7.3, never used the LR4b release. Only the first 10-20 images come in as NEF+JPG and after that I get only JPGs. Just imported six 8GB cards without realizing the problem, since it never used to be one...
My workaround has been to manually transfer files off the card into the destination, and then 'Synchronize Folder..." in LR. The import dialoge that pops up has no problem showing all the files correctly, and they import without problems. This leads me to believe the bug has something to do with importing directly from the card or camera.
I understand any major new release is bound to have some bugs, but this, in conjunction with LR4 crashing any time I try to print, is making the newest release pretty useless for me. The Library and Print modules account for 85% of my time in LR, with the Develop module accounting for the rest (Maps/Books/Slideshows/Web are never opened, ever). In the most abstract sense, LR is made for streamlining the input and output of images, and neither of those processes are working for me.

  • I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files.   What am I missing here?

I write both JPG and DNG files in the camera.   Camera is a Leica Monochrom.   Photo, unlike iPhoto, seems to ignore DNG files and only imports JPG files when both are present on the SD card.  JPGs are used for quick proofing on an iPad.    DNG RAW files are edited on a Mac Pro (2013).    Other than deleting the JPGs before importing images from the SD card,  is there any way to force Photo to select and import only the DNG images?

    Thanks Larry,
I did see the J stacked in the lower left of the thumbnails but couldn't figure out how to get to whatever is below it.   How do you select R?
I use an iPad to do quick proofs of my images.   A JPG is good enough for a proof ( dust on the lens,  composition, blown out image, etc. ).   The iPad is JPG friendly and can load the images quickly.    Serious editing takes place on my Mac Pro with the DNG files.   I use the same workflow with the the Leica M 240.   iPhoto has been a quick and easy importer to the Mac capturing all of the metadata in the EXIF sidecar file ( location, date, time,  camera settings, lens type).  A quick scan in iPhoto for the "keepers" let's me export those worth editing to Lightroom/Bridge/Photoshop.  I typically shoot 50 images from three locations in a normal day.  If I'm lucky I'll get 1 worth real work to add to the portfolio.
