Prevent Lion from automatically trying to mount Filevault 2 encrypted volume at startup?

Here's what I'm trying to accomplish: I need two separate partitions, one encrypted with Filevault 2 as a primary working partition, and a second token partition as a "decoy" of sorts, containing a pretty stock install and set as the default boot volume with automatic Guest account log on.  In other words, you turn on the computer and it boots to a guaranteed sterile clean desktop.  An unsophisticated snoop thinks that's all there is.  A more-sophisticated snoop may notice that there's a second (encrypted) volume, but can't access anything without the password.
So I did a clean install of Lion, filling the entire SSD, and then used Disk Utility to shrink the main partition and create a 14 GB secondary partition.  I then encrypted the main partition with Filevault 2 from within that logon.  Then I rebooted from the clean install USB drive and installed a second instance of Lion on the secondary partition, set up the Guest account, and then set it for auto log on.
So far so good, however, every time I boot into what is supposed to be—to the casual observer anyway—the "decoy" OS, it helpfully throws up a big dialog box stating "Enter a password to unlock the disk '<Your Super-Secret Volume Name Here>'." which I then have to cancel.  This is hardly helpful in disguising the fact that there is another partition on the SSD.
I've looked all over Finder's preferences and the System Preferences for a way to make this stop, but I can't seem to figure it out.  Anybody know how to keep Lion from helpfully trying to mount encrypted volumes when it loads?
Thanks!

FYI, similar discusion here: http://discussions.apple.com/message/15744942
This is more of a workaround than a solution, but I ended up installing Snow Leopard to the "decoy" partition.  It has no idea what to do with the encrypted partition, so it doesn't ask.  Good enough for now I guess, but it would be nice if Apple made this configurable.

How can I STOP iTunes from automatically trying to add podcasts to my iPod when I plug it in and sync it, so I can manage the files? I have already unchecked "Sync Podcasts" and "Automatically include,"yet EVERY time I sync it,it still transfers podcasts as the last step, and at other times randomly, when trying to just add some MP3's to a playlist, for example.  I can't seem to find any other option to uncheck, and can't find an answer from my so-far internet searching.

erict, you blew me away with that suggestion! It was something so simple I couldnt believe I hadnt thought of it! But in the end it didn't work, which I was really surprised about. On Windows anytime anything was moved itunes was hoplessly lost, but on this mac it still kept up with everything. I tried renaming folders, moving folders, and even renaming moved folders but it still kept trying to import.
I even went as far as deleting EVERYTHING i had moved to the Mac, which didnt really work. It still kept trying to import what wasnt there which made it continue to freeze up. However, after doing this it, the freezing was not nearly as bad. It gave me enough of a break to cancel it through the itunes dialog box at the top of the app. So in the end, thats all I really needed to do, only before I had deleted everything the freezing would not allow me to do it.
So now Im reimporting everything again, only slowly, and only a few Artists at a time.

  • Preventing Itunes from automatally synching

I want to prevent itunes from automatically syching when I plug in my iPod. I have music on my Ipod that is not in my library and I understand that synching will cause music to be erased from the iPod.
I went into EDIT, SETTINGS, DEVICES, and then checked the box "Prevent Automatic Synchronizing of ipods, iPhones, and iPads" and then clicked on "OK".
THIS DID NOT WORK. When I plugged in my iPod, the device immediately said on the screen "synchronizing".
    What am I to do?

After plugging in your ipod to your computer, click on it under devices. A summary screen comes up. Towards the bottom under options you can click on Manually sync. Uncheck the sync only.... box. Now it will not auto sync.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from automatically updating?

    Hello,
I am trying to prevent Firefox 28 from automatically updating to Firefox 29 (on OSX 10.7.5).
I have the option "Never check for updates" checked under 'Update' in the 'Advanced' Preferences. I have "Automatically update Search Engines" unchecked. I have uninstalled Firefox 29 completely using two separate uninstall clean-up kits and emptied the trash before re-installing Firefox 28... Yet every time I finally re-arrange, customize and re-sync Firefox 28 back to the way I like it, I restart my Mac and Firefox 29 rears it's over-drawn, bubbly, space-wasting, UN-SYNCED, ridiculous tabs on top nonsense user interface.
I've tried to work with Firefox 29 but the new SYNC simply does not work and that's a deal breaker. I need the changes I make on my mac to be reflected across the other two systems on my desk (one WinXP, one Win7) and vice versa. When I try to sync on FF29 it takes me to a page to log in and then refuses to recognize my email and password (which I have thoroughly confirmed on my other systems as correct).
Can you please help me prevent Firefox 28 from automatically updating to Firefox 29?

Thank you for your comments, cor-el.
Yes, I know about Classic Theme Restorer, but the point is what gives Mozilla the right to update my Firefox when I already have quite clearly set every option to prevent automatic updates?
    I have set:
    app.update.auto - false
    app.update.enabled - false
    app.update.silent - false
So which secret magic setting has Mozilla used to bypass all these settings and what gives them the right to do it?
Also, moving the tabs bar and menu bar and whatever else has been moved in Firefox 29 is a THEME change. It is not a security fix. Mozilla should not be in the business of changing the theme or look of Firefox. It is not their business how I want my Firefox to look.
Regarding "tabs", I have mine down the left side, so this tweaking of the tab bar position is pointless anyway.
To Mozilla, Just for absolute clarification, there is no way you can possibly justify forcing an update on users computers without their explicit acceptance.
What if someone found out how Mozilla forced the update? They could then force an update that is NOT a genuine Firefox release and do untold damage to peoples' computers.
So now I am forced to delete Firefox from my startup script and start it manually just in case their is another forced update that I can stop.
To cor-el, thank you for your post.
To Mozilla, you have lost the plot.

  • How do I prevent Mail from automatically sending iCal acceptances?

I am using Apple Mail 4.6 on Snow Leopard. I have multiple email accounts in Mail (personal, work, etc.) When I accept an iCal invitation, Mail automatically sends the email response without allowing me to review the email contents or the "From" address. This can lead to embarrassing situations if the email is sent from my personal account. Very uncool.
The only workaround I have found is to make my work account the "default" account by dragging it to the top of my account list. But this isn't foolproof as Mail apparently uses the address of any currently selected Inbox or message as the From address, so I have to make sure to deselect any messages in Mail before I click "Accept" in iCal. But now if I receive an invitation to my personal calendar, my acceptance will be sent from my work address. Also not cool.
Is there a better, more reliable way to control the "From" address in an iCal acceptance?
Or can I prevent Mail from sending this acceptance email automatically? Ideally, I would like Mail to put an unsent iCal acceptance in Drafts or Outbox so I can review and edit the message before sending. But the Drafts and Outbox mailboxes seem to be just chimera, always disappearing. (In fact, I tried creating and sending a message while offline and it just disappeared. Didn't even go to Drafts. When I went back online, the message went "swoosh" from some unknown location. Not very smart design, Apple.)

It looks like the only way to address this problem is by using this 3rd party software:
    iCal Reply Checker
    http://www.nhoj.co.uk/icalreplychecker/
Does anyone know of an Apple-native solution?

  • How do I prevent iTunes from automatically putting purchases onto my iPad?

I recently purchased an iPad and am putting my music on it from iTunes. After I put all of the songs on that I want, I find some of the songs that I purchased on the iTunes Store on my iPad, and I didn't even put them on there. It is as if my Store purchases are being put on my iPad automatically. I can't swipe them to the left so I can't delete them unless I wipe all of the music from my iPad - clearing the music off from iTunes doesn't clear them.
Are my purchased songs automatically being added? How do I prevent them from being added?
Some of the songs that I am putting on my iPad are songs that I purchased from the Store, but bought the physical album later.

Are my purchased songs automatically being added? How do I prevent them from being added?
    5502,
You can do that from the iPad itself.
Go into your iPad and touch the Settings icon.  Then, from the left-hand list, choose "iTunes & App Store."
This will give you a section about "Automatic Downloads."  There you can enable or disable Music, Apps, and Updates.

  • How to prevent headings from automatically appearing in the doc

    Hi,
I want to generate "printed documentation," in other words a Word file, from RoboHelp. RoboHelp automatically is taking the names of my TOC books and is putting them at the top of each section  in the doc file as a heading (uses the same styles consistently, using Heading 1 at the top level and Heading 2 as a sub level). I don't want this to happen. I didn't see anything about preventing this from happening on the Troubleshooting page.
For the record I am using my own CSS -- in other words the project's CSS -- when creating the doc file. RoboHelp apparently is assigning the heading style to be used in Word.
Can I prevent headings from being automatically created in the doc file, or do I have to remove them manually in the generated .doc?
    Thanks,
    Chris

If your print layout includes the books, then their titles will print.
If you only include topics, the book titles will not be included.

  • Preventing LabVIEW from automatically choosing replacement subVIs

I open my VI; then LabVIEW tries to load the subVIs which are called in the VI. But it cannot find them for whatever reason; perhaps I moved them or changed their names, for example. So, it automatically goes hunting through my hard-drive, trying to find them. If it finds something close, it automatically chooses and loads it, even though that subVI might be complete garbage--it just happened to have a close name.
There is no easy way for me either to stop it from automatically loading or to correct the damage once it is done. To correct the damage, I have to open each subVI and subsubVI and subsubsubVI (you get the picture) to replace it with the proper file. This is tedious, stupid, and annoying.
Please advise as to how to easily correct this problem. Please also force future LabVIEW editions to ask the user if the suggested replacement is correct before automatically loading it. The user should also be able to browse and choose the correct subVI file. Thank you.

Agreed, this is an annoying feature of LabVIEW and can cause headaches until you learn how to handle it.
The first thing you need to realize is that LabVIEW has only a single memory space. This means that no two VI’s can be loaded at the same time if they have the same name. It’s similar to the directory structure on any OS, you can’t have duplicate filenames in a directory.
Next is how does LabVIEW load sub VIs. The first place it looks is in its memory space. If it sees a VI with the name of the one it’s trying load, it must use that. Again, because it can’t have duplicate names in memory. If it’s not in memory, it looks for the sub VI at the path where it was when the top level VI was last saved. If it’s not there, it starts searching through a specified set of directories (that you can modify. Go to Tools>Options>Path>VI Search Path) for the VI. If you’re quick enough, you can hit the Browse button on the search dialog and find it yourself. If it doesn’t find it in the specified search paths, you then get a browse dialog to allow you to try and find it yourself.
To avoid problems like this, there are a couple things you need to keep in mind.
Don’t have duplicates of a VI on your hard drive. This will ensure that a top level always loads the correct one. If you have a sub VI that you use often, put it in the user.lib directory that’s located in the LabVIEWx.x directory.
Don’t have two VIs with different code use the same name. Even if they are used in different applications, you still have the possibility of getting the VIs cross linked.
Don’t rename a sub VI from outside of LabVIEW. If you want to rename, open it from the block diagram and do a “Save As”. This will relink everything correctly. If you change the name outside of LabVIEW, it has no way of knowing what you did and can’t track it.
Also realize that LabVIEW will only load a sub VI with an exact name match (not counting letter case). It won’t load something just because it’s close.
I’ve always thought they should have the search dialog ask you if you want to browse for the missing subVI or have LabVIEW search for. At least that way you would always have a chance to browse yourself.

iTunes app on the iPhone is for purchasing music.
The fact the iPhone starts playing when connected to your car stereo is a function of your car bluetooth system.
Consult your car dealer/bluetooth system manual.

Connect the iPhone to computer and select it in iTunes.

  • After iCloud backup restore, how can I prevent Podcasts from constantly trying (and failing) to download podcast episodes no longer in iTunes store?

I recently turned my iPhone in to a Genius bar and had it repaired under the iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program. Congruent to that repair, I had to do a factory reset (contetn and settings). Once I got it back, I restored from iCloud backup. When I re-opened the podcats app, it began to redownload all old episodes I had on the iPhone before.
Of these many podcasts, 5 episodes were from 2 defunct podcasts no longer on the iTunes store. It gets download errors on these episodes. I can get it to stop retrying (and failing). I have tried canceling the downloads. I have tried deleting the episodes (and the podcasts). I have tried deleting them then canceling the downloads. I have tried marking them as played and canceling the downloads. I cannot get them to be purged from the catalog and not try to redownload.
Outside of someone with access to the iCloud backend who can remove the associations, I don't know if anyone here can help me. But I am open to suggestions.
    Thanks.
(also perhaps of relevance, the period between the wipe and restore included the release of the 2.0 app )

    Hello DonaldGuy,
It sounds like you have some podcast subscriptions that are constantly trying to download but they are not in the iTunes Store anymore prompting an error message. You can use the edit button in the susbcriptions list to delete the subscribed podcasts in question, to prevent the error messages from happening:
    Podcasts at a glance

Then I would backup to iCloud to update the most current iCloud backup to reflect this:
    Back up to iCloud
If you're using iCloud, it can automatically back up your data if you've chosen this option. You can verify your iCloud backup and make sure that it's up to date by following these steps:
Tap Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup.
Turn on iCloud Backup if it's off.
    Tap Back Up Now.
