Prevent mac from sleeping

Hello everyone,
Does anyone know how to prevent the imac from going to sleep when using the restore disk to start the system.  This is the state I need the imac in to create the requited backup before I whipe the system and do a clean install of Mountain Lion to resolve all my issues.  I have many system issues that started with upgrsade to snow leopard got worse with uprade from mobileme to icloud, and continue to pleague me with the latest upgrade to Mountan Lion.
Hardware Overview:
  Model Name:          iMac

  Memory:          4 GB
  Bus Speed:          1.07 GHz

Thanks, but these options are not available from the restore disk startup.  I am usinig the diskutility on the restore disk to create the clone of my had drive.  I think that the caffeinate command is working, but I am not able to run the diskutility from that terminal window.

  • What is preventing my Mac from sleeping?

Ever since installing Lion, both of my Mac Pros don't sleep properly.
When the machine wakes, the Mail notification sound, sounds many, many times.  EG:  If I have receives 100 emails since sleep, it notifies me 100 times.
How can I tell what is preventing my Mac from sleeping, or is this multiple mail sound something else?

There are few threads in this site discussing the same issue.
    Causes sited are
File sharing as mentioned in your post,
    Recently installed antivirus software,
    External HD not properly ejected,
    Print Que not cleared
and Mail constantly checking for new mail that you can change in Mail > Preference >General.
    Solutions suggested are
    Reset PRAM and SMC
and Repair Disk using  Recovery HD.

  • How to stop my Time Machine external hard drive preventing iMac from sleeping?

I have a late 2012 iMac, and have discovered that sometimes (I haven't noticed a pattern of when it doesn/doesn't happen) the computer will immediately wake up after I set it to Sleep (Apple Menu>Sleep). Through elimination I have found that it is the the USB 3.0 external hard drive I use as a Time Machine back-up that is the culprit; unplugging it then allows the computer to sleep. If I unplug it, then plug it back in later on, this normally solves the problem for a while, but not forever. This same Hard Drive didn't cause the wake problem on my previous '08 iMac.
A big issue is that when the machine immediately wakes from sleep, the display stays off (until I move the mouse) - this is good from a power saving point of view, but means I don't know if/when the machine is immediately waking from sleep (I have to listen to the fan when setting it to Sleep mode to hear if it has actually woken back up).
I've searched the forums, but can't find another poster with the same problem as myself. Can anyone advise a course for me to pursue to prevent this from happening?
    Thanks. Jamie

Hi Frank. Nope, I'm still having the same symptoms; the plugged in external drive (TIme Machine) will wake the machine up a couple of seconds after it winding down when put to into sleep mode. Ejecting the drive and then sleeping the machine works. After plugging it in again to do a Time machine backup, it will allow the computer to sleep soundly for the first few sessions (eg a few days of sleeping, waking, sleeping, waking, etc), but then it will then suddenly start preventing it from sleeping again after a while.
It seems I'm fortunate in my case that the display stays dark (or off?) when the machine has been woken from sleep, but this was actually preventing me from knowing the machine wasn't in fact asleep for quite some time; I only eventually cottoned on because there wasn't any delay when 'waking' my machine (which there normally is). I would then have to carefully listen to the spinning fans to know if in fact it had gone to sleep or not.
So, to summarise, unfortunately no, I haven't solved this yet. If anyone else has a solution, please let us know?
Also, I've noticed occasionally after waking that there is a relatively quiet 'crackle' sound (kind of electrical sounding) from the bottom-right area of the machine. This goes on every so often for about 30mins. I see this is also an issue with other people's late 2012 iMacs, but I've not seen if anyone has a solution to it?

  • How to prevent computer from sleeping when downloading Lion from the recovery partition?

    Hello,
I just got a new MacBook Pro that came with Lion. I'm reinstalling from the recovery partition and I'm on the downloading additional components stage. It has 3 hours to go and the computer keeps going to sleep. How can I prevent this? I don't want to have to babysit the computer for 3 more hours.
    Thanks.

Looking for an answer to this question now.  Did you find one?  I'm about an hour into a 6+ hour reinstall of Mountain Lion from the Recovery partition on my MacBook Pro.  So I can't change the sleep corners or caffenate it or do much of anything but wait.   I want to go to bed and let it install overnight, but I assume it will go to sleep, and that will kill the download.  It there any way to prevent it from sleeping now?
Even trying to think of something I can put on the trackpad to trick it into thinking I'm touching it.
Maybe ill put it under my dog, and her movements will keep it awake?  Thinking outside the box here.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Is it possible for skype to wake Mac from sleep mode?

Does anyone know if it is possible for skype to wake Mac from sleep mode?

Sadly there is nothing in Skypes Code fot it. In fact, Skype for Mac, is one of the most Vanilla versions out. Windows Version has 5x-10x the user functionality.  Since Microflops buy into Skype, Mac versions will continue to be second rate on purpose, but be thankful, if Microflop was there from teh beginning, they woudl have banned a Mac version, just like they do in their higher tier games.

  • Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

Is there an AppleScript or Automator Script that will wake a Mac from Sleep?

    Frank and All,
The following answer to your question above is complicated, but I hope it explains why my question was formed with so much frustration in it.
I have an OpenOffice(OO) Macro that was launched with Calendar at 6pm each business night. It ran properly in all Apples operating systems until I Hit Maverick(OSX10.9). From then on, the AppleScript would run from one to 3 days, then would disappear from the Calendar entry. The Calendar alert would still run, but the "OpenFile" section of the alert would disappear. I also was running elgato EyeTV HD during the day, so I would use energy saver to put my MacBook Pro to sleep at 12 Midnight and wake it again at 9am. I picked up a used Mac Mini to do the EyeTV stuff, provide AppleTV the files in H264 format through iTunes' media share, and found it had plenty of power to do the 6pm automated stuff simultaneously as well. Because I still wanted to run the OpenOffice Macro on my MacBook Pro at 6pm, and wanted to use it for a host of other things when I was on the road, I wanted it to sleep most of the time and only wake up automatically to run the 6pm OO Macro. When I called Apple about the issue I was having with Maverick and Calendar loosing the OpenFile command as part of the Alert Message, they told me the no longer supported answering AppleScript Questions but they now would support Automator questions. I pointed out that the OpenFile would also fail after one to three days if I used a Calendar Alert to launch an Automator App. At first, I did not like Automator, but now I see why Apple is pushing us to use it. Automator adds a TIME STAMP ID to the Apps developed in Automator so the first time you launch the App after a change to it, you must reply to a dialog message saying that this is the first time you are running this version of the App. If a Scammer has replaced your app with one that can reek havoc on your computer, the replacement app will not run unless you are there to agree that you know where the modified app came from and click the OK button to continue (BRILLIANT, Enhanced Security idea on Apples part). I also noticed that after Mountain Lion, the Applescript delay timing was all screwed up as well. Well I tried to use LaunchD Task Scheduler to circumvent the Calendar Problem and that worked until I upgraded to Yosemite Last week. Then LaunchD no longer worked and I am only into a few days of using The Calendar Launched Automator App to see if it will continue to run.
But I think I solved the dilemma I was having with opening an Automator App in a Sleeping Mac. I Googled up the following question, "AppleScript to wake up computer".  I went thru several complex responses until I found this on that is INCREDIBLE EASEY! What came back was a brettterpstra.com  response from Feb 20th,2014. What it said, in a Quick Tip: caffeinated your Terminal Article,  if you wanted to wake a Mac from sleep, use the Terminal command named "Caffeine -u -t 1". I placed it in an Automator Most Used Action called "Run Shell Script -- Caffeine -u -t 1" and it worked!  Now, I can put my Mac to Sleep but at 6pm, the Automator App will launch, run the "Caffeine -u- -t 1" command and proceed to work as if I had awakened the Mac From Sleep mode by pressing a keyboard key and had run the Automator Script with a double click.
Sorry for the long, drawn-out reply, but maybe this will help others.

  • Flashing screen when awakening my mac from sleep

Help: What can I do to fix my screen issue-- It flashes for the first 20 seconds each time when I awaken my mac from sleep mode: Thanks!
    (mac pro 2007 intel based)

Thanks, Linc.  I was worried that since this was a refurbished computer, it was dying again.  Makes sense, although alittle annoying that nothing really warns you this is happening.  I almost cycled power the first couple times it happened, thinking it was stuck while waking.

  • Prevent MBP13 from sleeping when closed power & ext display?

    hi all,
i use my macbook with an external monitor and keyboard. i normally have my macbook charging and the lid closed.
i unplugged the mag charger and my external monitor went black.  however when my lid is open and not charging everything works fine.
so my question is why does everything work fine when my mac is running on power and lid closed but does not when lid is closed and an running on battery.  (however does when lid open running on batt)

    Hi Radium88,
You can prevent your MacBook Pro from going to sleep using the steps in this article -
OS X Mountain Lion: Prevent your computer from sleeping
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10679
    Specifically -
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Energy Saver.
Drag the slider that controls the computer’s sleep to “Never.”
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Clamshell Mode Prevents Waking from Sleep

I've got a MacBook Pro (Intel, 2.33GHz) running 10.5. Since installing Leopard I've been bumping into periodic issues with trying to wake from sleep while in clamshell mode. (I've got a Samsung LCD monitor and a USB keyboard plugged into it, and most of the time the laptop itself stays closed.) Every now and then--mostly if the laptop has been asleep for a while, say, overnight or all day--it'll refuse to wake up. I've never had one of the kernel panics described in this thread: it just won't wake up, even if I open the laptop, until I unplug the external monitor from the monitor-out socket. Once I unplug the external, the onboard screen comes right on, and I can even re-attach the external monitor and it'll work just fine; but if I close the laptop, I'm back at Square 1 with a comatose computer.
Restarting the machine doesn't help. Tossing the PowerManagement.plist file solves the problem temporarily, but eventually it recurs. Anybody have any insights? Other things I might try? Similar experiences?

Try Ejecting the External HD before sleeping the Mac.
Then see if the Mac Mini will wake and re-mount the External HD.

  • Restore disk OS X Mountain Lion: Prevent computer from sleeping

Please help, I need to create a backup using the disk utility on my restore disk.  However, the computer keeps going to sleep and corrupting the backup. How do I prevent my computer from sleeping while the imac is creating the backup?
Processor  3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
I can not add anymore physical ram
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)

I would recommend using a proper tool for backing up, if you want to create a bootable clone use either SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Either that (or even better use a clone and) or use Time Machine.

  • Reconnection issues with Mac (from sleep)

Hi, I have only had BT infinity for a few days now, but this is driving me mad already.
When I turn my computer on, I don't have any problems, finds the network straight away, connects and I'm ready to go. However, if I put the computer to sleep/standby (close the lid), when I want to use it again, although it shows I'm conncted to the network, nothing will load, I get the 'your not connected to the internet' message in my browser. The same with emails etc, can't find the server. no matter how long I leave it, it won't sort itself out. I have to manually turn wifi off and back on again to rectify the problem.
As you can imagine, this is becomming a bit of a pain, so if anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful.
    Cheers
    djt1

Ermm, now if you go to the Airport Icon and click on Network preferences, and then the wifi networks have you made sure BT Fon or BT Openzone are not set to connect? If they are in there then delete them.
And the only other thing I can think of would be to Remove the Wireless Network in question, restart the mac, and then re-add the network, restart again, and then see if you still have the same problem from putting the Mac to sleep.

  • Can I wake my Mac from sleep with network activity?

Just got a MBP and now am enjoying mounting it on my iMac and vice versa via my home network (using URL address with AFP://xxx.xxx.xxx.local). Question: Is there a way to wake either one from sleep when I access it from the other?
    TIA,
    Picman

    Elamc,
OK, I now know. Some Macs will support both Ethernet and wireless and some won't. The setting in my MBP says "Wake for network access", while my iMac says "Wake for network Ethernet access". The MBP supports both, but the iMac just with a cable connection. I did find a good tech note that describes the how's and what's. Just Google "Mac wake on network access" and look at "Mac OS X v10.6: About Wake on Demand".
Thanks for your info ... it helped.

  • IPad prevents MBP from sleeping

I recently noticed that my MBP was no longer sleeping. It would get to the almost asleep state - where the light was very dim - but not pulsing - and stay there.
I shut down all programs on the MBP and made sure that the Preference for Waking on Ethernet Access was not checked.
    It still would not sleep.
I finally solved the problem by asking what the last thing I did was, before I noticed this issue. I bought my iPad.
I also noticed that the router lights for the MBP were active, occasionally flashing. Normally they go out as the MBP goes into the sleep mode.
    Solution:
The iPad is apparently networked with the MBP, either directly via the WiFi or via iCloud.
By turning the Airplane mode ON on the iPad, my MBP quickly went to sleep. The Airplane mode turns the WiFi off and thereby disconnects it from my MBP.
So if you have a problem with your Mac not sleeping properly, try turning the Airplane mode ON on your iPad and see if this does not fix the problem. It works for me...

    These commands:
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.udp.log_in_vain=1
    sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.log_in_vain=1
will give you output like the following in the console log:
01-10-12 20:20:45,000 kernel: Connection attempt to TCP 192.168.1.17:554 from 192.168.1.15:37481
In my case it was Synology Surveillance station trying to connect to port 554 on my laptop...
Don't forget to set the variable back to 0 after you found the problem!
    Patrick
