Prevent mirroring of displays when connecting to a new external monitor

Hi. Not sure whether this is a MacBook Pro issue or a 10.4.5 issue, but I'm sure my old 17" G4 didn't do this...
My MacBook Pro spends much of its time connected to a Dell flat panel display. Mirroring is turned off, and the computer always remembers not to mirror.
However, I do a lot of presentations, and therefore connect the MBP to other people's data projectors with reasonable regularity. Every time I plug in to one of these data projectors, the MBP mirrors the display, and drops its own resolution down - usually to 800x600. I then need to turn off mirroring before increasing the resolution of both displays back up to whatever they can cope with...
Is there a way to change the default behaviour, so that displays are never mirrored unless I explicitly ask for them to be by selecting the 'Mirror Displays' check box on the Arrangement tab of the Displays system preference?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Try pressing F7 after you connect to the external display. This should solve your issue. Also, in the Display Preferences you can select to show the display icon next to your volume, airport, etc. When you do this you can select one resolution for your computer and another for your external display.
Hope this helps

  • Blurred display when presenting w Powerpoint via external monitor

I have a black MacBook (running Snow Leopard). Since some time when I connect any external monitor (beamer) and click slideshow in Powerpoint 2008, the MacBook display becomes a total blur. This only happens when displays are mirrored in display system prefs.
I basically see the colours of the slides but cannot read a thing. The external monitor shows the presentation correctly.
Any ideas what is causing this strange behaviour would be much appreciated!

    Scott,
Many thanks for your answer! If you're right, what do you suggest that I do whenever I have to connect an external beamer/projector?
Of course, it should show up fine on the projector (cuz that's what my audience will see) but I'd like to be able to see it in some form on my laptop display too. Would that be possible?
    Thanks,
    Hans

When you connect the device open iTunes and select it from the sidebar. Click on the Summary tab in the main window. Uncheck the option to automatically connect to iTunes. You will find it in the collection of options near the lower part of the window.

  • Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Windows server

    Hi All
I am getting error -36 when I tried to copy any file or folder from windows server
"Error -36 alert displays when connecting to a Windows server"
Even the file info is zero KB, while from other MAC machine it is right size.

You shouldn't get the same error when you are doing it from Terminal. The error should be a little different. I just did a test. Is this a Microsoft 2003 server, 2000 or NT4 you are connecting to? Your post isn't specific. Make sure the System Preferences:Network:Advanced:WINS tab is filled in with the domain you are connecting to next to the "Workgroup" name. The WINS server should already be filled in. Open the connect window with command K. Type domainname\username for the login and then the password. If you don't want to enter the domain each time you will need to add the domain in the Applications:Utilities:Directory Uitility application.
If you are trying to connect to a Windows XP client box, the machine will automatically try to authenticate with the guest account not the username and password you are using even when "registered user" is ticked. You have to edit the registry to change this default. If the username from the Windows PC is the same as the user logon then this is why the PC is able to connect and the mac is not.

A user meet the above problem connecting to Windows 2003 server but have no this error if connected to Windows 2000 Server.
According to the above solution, will you configure Windows 2003 server or just configure user's Macintosh platform?

Actually, win2003 server's default security options are shown as follows.
    1. MS network client: Digitally sign communications (always) - Disabled
    2. MS network client: Digitally sign communications (if server agrees) - Enabled
    3. MS network server: Digitally sign communications (always) - Disabled
    4. MS network server: Digitally sign communications (if client agrees) - Disabled
We could both be right on this one; it depends on your setup. By default, if you're running a domain then the Domain Controller is:
*Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) Policy Setting: not defined*
That defaults to the Group Policy setting, which is enabled.
The local computer group policy for Windows Server 2003 is:
*Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) Security Setting: disabled*
I'm referencing this KB article on Microsoft's website: <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887429>.
This does not take into consideration that you may have upgraded from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Server 2003.
Regardless, you seem to have already eliminated this as a possibility as you mention below.
In my case, user can connect to win2003 server without problem in the same LAN 192.168.8.x. If connect it from remote lan 192.168.10.x (e.g. smb://192.168.8.250/artwork) error -36 will appear. Since remote lan is connected to local lan by secured VPN, all traffic or any ports are allowed to passe through VPN.
Rather than a server or client problem I would speculate your VPN connection is the problem. Do you have port TCP 445 open or blocked at your VPN concentrator? I believe this needs to be open.

MBP Retina OS X Yosemite has distorted display when connected to Epson projector.  How do I fix this?

    Hello ATLawson,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that the display, after connecting to a projector, does not have the image quality you would expect. There may be a few different troubleshooting steps I would recommend in this situation. To begin troubleshooting, I would suggest reading over and working through the information in the attached article.

It may be that the laptop is expecting to find external speakers.  Since I am new to laptops, I will check further when I know the model.

  • Speckles on external Samsung Display when connected to my Macbook Pro

When I connect my MacBook Pro to my Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM monitor via a mini display port DVI adapter, I get loads of speckles on the display. They vary in colour depending on the display colour and are driving me mad!
Webcam video of this effect here http://gallery.me.com/wildj/100399
Doesn't do it when connected via the VGA adapter.
Anyone else had any problems like this?
    Jim

I have exactly the same issue - just got my brand new apple adapter, and to my great disappointment the monitor just blinks. It is the same monitor - Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM. The cables seem to be right - single link DVI-D cables, I tried three of them, one of them actually produced what could be considered a picture - but it is not usable - blinking and shaking. VGA adaptor works fine. I was hoping to get better quality with DVI, but it seems to be not possible in my setup. To add to it, I have another two Samsung monitors - 2232GW, and 245T - the same issue. Could the adaptor be faulty? Though it doesn't seem to be the case, as there are a lot of posts about this problem.

Does anyone else have this problem?  It works fine when connected to my air...

Is your 2.6 the CTO upgrade from the high end 2.3 15"?
Yes, both will work under OSX and Windows. One note, when you boot Windows, you need to unplug the USB from the LED Cinema display or Windows will not boot. Once booted, then plug the USB back in to regain brightness, etc controls.

  • Sharepoints not displayed when connecting via FTP

    Hi All,

I have an issue with the built in FTP server.
All my share point are set to be shared via FTP, yet they are not displayed when users log in and access the server via FTP.
In Server Admin, Authenticated users see: FTP Root and Share Points.
All relevant users have access to the FTP service, in the server settings.
ACL permissions have been set correctly for those users.
This is *sudo sharing -l* tells me, for all share points.

    Hi,
    Sorry for the late respons.
    My config:
1 mac mini with OSX Server leopard
    1 airport extreem
    1 external HDD LaCie
An airport Extreme has the posibility to share a network drive. So I plugged in my HDD into the airport extreme and configured the thing.
Than I turned to the mac mini. And started configuring my sharepoints.
So one of my sharepoints is the external HDD.
There are several directories on there that I want to make available thru the legacy protocol FTP.
So by just making these sharepoints available thru FTP i expected for these sharepoint to show up in mij directories if I connect to my external IP with a FTP client like CyberDuck.
(portforwarding and everything is not the problem, because I can make a connections and all directories show up as browseable.
But the sharepoint I made on the network drive just show up as an bin or another kind off file I can't open.
    Everything else is browsable..
They show up by the way in the root dir of the FTP Server as regular symbolic links.
Thru Finder I can browse them and do everything. But as soon as i connect over the internet, lan or whatever, these symbolic links are not the access point towards the directory underneath.
They show up with the correct name just not as an dir I can open.
    Hope this helps
    Grtz and thnx
