Prevent non-admins from using passwords...

Title says it all haha, I have a iMac for the kids and I have an admin account with a password and I was wondering how can I (if I can) prevent them from making passwords for their non-admin accounts?
Thank you,
TM

..."prevent them from making passwords"...
If this means that the accounts currently do not have passwords, that generally is considered unsafe, although with appropriate security measures in place to protect the local network, it might be alright (I don't consider myself knowledgeable enough to provide advice on what those measures might be). Nevertheless, an "admin" can simply set a blank password for any account using the "Accounts" pref pane, while logged in to any account except the one whose password is being changed.
However, if the question is really about preventing the users from changing their own password, OS X does provide an option through "System Preferences" > "Accounts" > "Parental Controls" > "Finder.app & System" where an "admin" can set whether or not it is allowed. There is a loophole but it's fairly obscure, and it can probably be closed if the need arises.
Keep in mind that an "admin" can change any user's password at will so even if the users decide to change it, an "admin" can always change it back. An "admin" always has access to almost any file on the computer, with the exception of those that are encrypted (eg. keychains, encrypted disk images, including "FileVault", etc.) so the kids can't really lock you out, if that is the concern.

  • Preventing third parties from using the TouchUp Text Tool on generated documents

    While perusing the options of Adobe Acrobat at work I had the good fortune of finding the TouchUp Text Tool. Now I am trying find a relatively simple solution in order prevent third parties from using this same tool to easily modify pdfs we create from Mac Word 2011. My research has come up with applying a password/certificate/security policy but I have been unable to figure out how to apply one of these solutions automatically to all newly generated documents.
    Is there a way to automatically apply a password/certificate/security policy on every pdf that is converted from Word 2011? Preferably one that does not involve additional investment in software. Or another similar work around.
    Thank you in advance!

    Please try to re print the document using Adobe PDF printer and make sure you embed the fonts during the conversion to new file.
    Can you also upload few sample files for further investigation ?

  • I lost my iphone and I use the locate iphone function to wipe to protect my information, but I cannot get the location to restore my iphone, can I request a permanent lock to prevent the thief from using it?

    I lost my iphone and I use the locate iphone function to wipe to protect my information, but I cannot get the location to restore my iphone, can I request a permanent lock to prevent the thief from using it?, I call your call centre, your staff said they can do nothing, I am great disappointed as your advertisment said that we can protect our phone from lost, however, I think my phone has now been resale and reuse by others, but Apple cannot do anything with your so call "Find my iphone" function, I have brought 4 iphone and iPad for my family use, I will never use your product again and recommend to my company or friends anymore!
    Philip Sin

    You are not addressing Apple here at all.
    Apple can do nothing.  Sorry.
    Like any other make of any other phone, they cannot permanently disable it.
    The thief is responsible.  Not Apple.  You seem to be directing your anger at the wrong people.
    No phone manufacturer will do this.
    "I am great disappointed as your advertisment said that we can protect our phone from lost, "
    It mentions "loss"  NOT theft.  you cannot find a mention of theft protection.  Find my iphone is NOT theft protection and has never been advertised as such.

  • Preventing local admin from changing root password

    Is it possible to prevent a local admin from changing the root password? I would like to set up a computer so that the user has admin rights, but cannot change the root password via a terminal shell to gain root access.

    I can't provide you with details, but I'm sure that all you need to do is to edit the sudoers file. It needs to be edited with <visudo> when logged in as root in a Terminal. The location is </private/etc/sudoers>, but you don't need to know that when using <visudo>. From a first look I'd suppose you only have to uncomment the %admin line, but better get some more information. I never did this myself.

  • Is there any way to prevent non-admin user accounts to receive software update prompts?

    I am the admin account user on our MacBook Pro, and there is one standard user account on it as well. Generally we are both logged on so we can quickly switch between user accounts and 'spin the desktop'.
    For some reason, all the software update notifications seem to be received when the standard user account is the active one.
    I know that the standard user cannot actually update without my account password and my Apple ID, but a) The notifications confuse the non-admin user, and she gets flustered, and b) Even if she manages to cancel them from the notification area, she then has to remember to tell me verbally that she had had one.
    Is there any way to stop her receiving the update notifications altogether?
    Running OS X 10.8.2 on MacBook Pro.
    Thanks in advance.

    You should be able to do this by unchecking the software update service in the system preferences to prevent the system from running the check as the "_softwareupate" user and passing it to the notification service that broadcasts to all user accounts. Then you can check for the software update in an admin account using the following Terminal line:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck -Check YES
    This line can be scripted via Terminal services to run on a schedule (ie, every few hours), and if there are found updates it will launch the App Store for that account and present them. Granted this approach circumvents the notification service, but should work. To try this, open TextEdit on your computer and in a new document choose "Make Plain Text" from the Format menu.
    Then copy and paste the following text into the new document:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
              <key>Label</key>
              <string>local.softwareupdatecheck</string>
              <key>ProgramArguments</key>
              <array>
                        <string>/System/Library/CoreServices/Software Update.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck</string>
                        <string>-Check</string>
                        <string>YES</string>
              </array>
              <key>StartInterval</key>
              <integer>21600</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    When done, save the document to your desktop as "softwareupdatecheck.plist" or anything as long as it ends with ".plist." Then get information on the file in the Finder to ensure its name ends with plist and not anything else like "plist.txt" (rename it accordingly in the Info window's "Name & Extension" section.
    With the file name appropriate, hold the Option key and choose the "Library" option in the Finder's "Go" menu. Then locate the folder called "Launch Agents" in the library and drag the text file to this folder. Then log out and log back into your account.
    This text file is a launch agent script that instructs the system to run the program arguments every 21600 seconds (6 hours) whenever the user is logged in. The program arguments here are simply those to check for software updates for the system. You can change this time interval to be any number of seconds you would like, but there are other options to use besides the "StartInterval" key for scheduling the task. This approach simply has it repeat every number of seconds, but you can use other options to have it only run on specific hours or days, or only have it run once when you log in, etc.
    If this works for you, then if you'd like to explore these other options write back here and we can go over them for you.

  • I lost my iPhone....no ap to locate it...can i prevent the thief from using it at very least

    I lost my Iphone. It's gone forever probably. New Iphone enroute. However I would like to make sure the person who stole it cannot use it. Is there a way to do that because I'm sure my sim card has been removed and they are probably trying to clear and prep the phone for their own use.
    The fact that there is a serial number associated with the phone, hopefully gives me some way to track the phone or register it so that it can't be used.

    Sorry, there is no way to do that. The best you can hope for is if your carrier offers blacklisting(some do, some don't). If your carrier doesn't offer blacklisting, there is no way to prevent the phone from being used.

  • HT204291 Airplay on Mac prevents other devices from using airplay

    I have successfully connected my mid 2011 Mac mini to my 3rd gen Apple TV to allow for extended desktop on Mavericks. The problem is after I have disconnected Apple TV from the Mac mini and turned off airplay features, the Apple TV stays connected to the Mac mini, causing the Apple TV to turn on and stay on, even when the Mac mini is asleep. I have also just found out that this unwanted connection prevents my other iOS devices from using Airplay with Apple TV. The device will connect momentarily the then be kicked off with the Apple TV showing that it's "playing" an "Untitled" track from "Internet radio". At the time of this incident, the Mac mini was on sleep mode. This problem was resolved when I shut down the Mac mini.
    What is causing this unwanted connection and how can I be able to use Airplay from devices without having to shut down my Mac mini?

    Thank you for the quick reply HACKINT0SH. But it does not solve anything.
    When i move the iMac to the first floor and connect trough wifi it works. When I move the device back to the cellar then it works via LAN for a day or so... After some time the Airplay Icon is just gone
    It seems that the Mac is not searching anymore for AirPlay devices or the broadcasts goes nuts.
    Is there any way to search manually for AirPlay devices?

  • Is there a way to prevent a user from using the graph cursor legend to delete a cursor?

    I would like to have 2 cursors on a graph that can't be deleted by the user.

    Hi Dennis,
    I'm having this problem as well, and found your post. Are you referring to the Enabled State of the entire graph?  If so, this prevents the user from moving the cursor at all while the VI is running, which, of course, defeats the purpose of having a cursor at all.  Ideally, I would like to show the cursor palette and disable it's run-time shortcut menu.  This doesn't appear to be possible.   One workaround would be to hide the palle and instead include some indicators that show the cursors' values.  I'd prefer to show the palette to keep the program simpler.
    Any other solutions?
    Thanks,

  • How do I prevent non-admin users from putting Lion to sleep?

    I share a MacPro at home with a few others.  I use it as a server as well as keep content on it that is streamed to all sorts of devices; they use it as a mac to check e-mail.  Two of the users have a really bad habit of putting it to sleep because the display wastes power being on (even though it will dim in 60 seconds and turn off in 3).  Despite my best efforts to assure them that putting it to sleep will cause other things to crash once a month they go ahead and try to do it anyway.  Suffice it to say they then ask me why the AppleTV has no access to the content stored on the MacPro.
    With that in mind I want to know if it is possible to require an administrator password to put the Mac to sleep?  5 of 7 users do not have admin privileges, the other won't put it to sleep.  If you know a wayf to prevent it - you would be my hero.  If your suggestion is simply prevent them access to the Mac that won't really work - despite my hopes.
    Let me know - its a huge pain every time it happens.
    Thanks,
    Sandy.

    Hi - you have will have to change the device passwords on all the base stations and then don't give them to anyone except the administrators and tell them not to save them on their computers that use the older versions of the Airport Utility - for the newer versions like the mobile apps, as soon as you enter the pasword it is saved and is visible in the advanced pane along with the network password - so if anyone gets a hold of your iPad or iPhone, they can edit the whole network - I have this same issue with my networks in the office and it is inconvenient but doable - I hope this helps

  • I'd like to lock my whole imac to prevent my child from using it

    Hello everybody
    My son is spending way too much time on the computer and I would like to lock my imac alltogether so he can't have access to it.
    Appart from the screen lock that I know how to do is there any trick to lock the whole system so our dear monkeys can't use it?
    Thank you for your help
    Carine

    Well, you need to add (if you don't already have one) a password for your user account, and tell the computer to require a login when it starts up. Go to System Preferences - Accounts - (it may be called Users and Groups in your version of the OS) - click Login Options at the bottom left, click the padlock in the lower left to unlock the page if necessarily and enter your password. Turn Automatic Login OFF. Then click back on your username, and change your password if you think your son knows it. So that will require a password when the computer starts up - and just remember to log out or shut down whenever you stop using the computer yourself.
    You can also create user accounts with parental controls - limiting what they can do on the computer, when, and for how long. It is HIGHLY recommended to give children a separate account on the Mac so that they cannot accidentally (or maliciously!) change or delete your files.
    While you're in the Accounts preferences, create a trial user for your son - it's the plus button on the lower left. Give him a name and password, and set his account type to Managed with Parental Controls. Once it's created, click Open Parental Controls in the bottom right. Now you'll see the various ways you can limit his access, including setting a bedtime, or total hours of usage. You can also determine which apps or websites he can and can't use.

  • May I know how to prevent my iPhone from using data? [I've tried fake APN]

    Greetings.
    I'd like to see the help of the community, for this problem has persisted for a month plus. Being unable to use my prepaid credit and having it deducted for no reason can be a little frustrating.
    So here's what I've done so far.
    1. I've updated my iPhone 2G to the latest iOS, the 3.1.3
    2. I've googled my problem and found a few solutions (like iphonenodata.com and unlockit.co.nz) however they were of no help to me.
    3. I've called my carrier, and they've helped me blacklist my number under GPRS to prevent cellular data usage, however the problem still persisted. To my surprise.
    So, my question is.. why is it that the problem persists after having to take so many actions? I've noticed on the blog on which I found the information regarding the iphonenodata.com that some users still have this problem even after installing it.
    Is it because the fake APN does not work for iPhones with iOS 3.1.3?
    Are there any known solutions to preventing cellular data usage for iPhone 2G with iOS 3.1.3?
    Please help me, thank you very much for your time.
    Btw, I live in Malaysia. Just in case the carriers in other countries can actually fix this problem.
    P/s : I know for a fact that this is a common problem and that the community may even be exasperated by how many people who'd actually start a new thread and all, but I do ask of you to take 5 minutes just to help me out? (: it will be very much appreciated.

    Thank you for the replies.
    Yes Michael. It is still deducting data charges despite the fact that they've told me they have disabled cellular data access. My previous carrier (I've switched carriers, just to try my luck.) even had an investigation team for my case, however, the solution that they came up with was to refund my credit deducted (which they claimed was only RM2.10, but I didn't make a big fuss about it) so that I can monitor my prepaid credit for any further data charges. The minute they refunded the amount, instantly RM1.80 was deducted. It was deducted so fast that I didn't even get to see my credit go up to RM2.10, it was instantly RM0.30.
    I'll make a call to my carrier tomorrow regarding this issue. My previous carrier couldn't solve the problem, and didn't do any follow-ups. However, in the event that they cannot help me, what do you suggest I do?
    Thanks again for your replies.

  • How do you prevent a user from using the playback bar to skip questions?

    Hi,
    I am fairly new to Captivate and I had a question regarding the quiz feature in Cap4. I have some users testing the module for me and they are able to skip questions. I have done the following: 1. Made the quiz required 2. removed the review buttons.
    Is there something I am doing wrong?
    Shal

    Hello,
    You could hide the playbar, since it is not really needed for Question slides: on entering the first question slide you assign the value 0 to the system variable cpCmndShowPlaybar, and when you want to show it again, assign the value 1.

  • Is it possible to prevent users from using the ''Purge'' option from the ''Recover deleted items'' in Office 365?

    Hi,
    After speaking with a Microsoft engineer over the phone, I've been told that there is no way to prevent users to go to their OWA and manually Purge specific items from the ''Recover deleted items''. The Microsoft tech told us to place the desired mailboxes
    on a litigation-hold and that all data will be recoverable... but only from the time you place the mailbox onto Litigation-Hold and previous items, which doesn't take effect for new-coming emails.
    1- From what I understand, any new items coming in the mailbox after the Litigation-Hold is put in place will still be ''purgeable'', right?
    2- Is there a way (PowerShell, Security group, etc.) that can prevent a user from using the Purge option?
    We are very surprised that there is absolutely no thread that talks about this issue, which in our opinion, is a major legal and security flaw from Office 365. This is a main concern for us to actually go with Office365. For instance, this means that at
    any given time, if a user exchanges emails with a competitor, they can manually purge emails sent and receive as soon as it is sent/received, even after Litigation-Hold is in place.
    Thank you for your reply and let us know if you have more questions.
    Normand Bessette, IT support technician, Newad Media

    Thank you for the reply.
    Is there still a way to prevent users from using the Purge option, like with a Powershell script to disable Purge?
