Prevent recovery of deleted files on SSD?

Borrowing a OS X 10.8.5 Air while I wait for a Pro replacement. Three days later I decide that it would be prudent to secure empty trash.
Another day later I decide to run Disk Drill just to see what might be unearthed. Everything and more.
I can't be sure I will be writing over those files as I will need to return the Air shortly.
As far as I understand it with the SSDs, booting into recovery mode will offer only a complete secure erase, not the erase free space option? Or am I wrong?
If not, are there some permanent erase options that I can be sure won't wipe out the entire hard drive as well as cost a great deal?
TIA

Disk Drill, and all other file recovery apps for the Mac will recover every deleted file it can find on the drive. However, it should not have been at all possible to recover the ones you deleted with Secure Empty Trash. All files currently in the trash have every bit of their data overwritten 7 times with random data.
Were these part of what was recovered? Or just other normally deleted items?

It's important to define deleted and recovery. You can recover file from the recycle bin using the Win API. Here's an
example in C/C++. You need to
    pinvoke SHFileOperation.

  • Recovery of deleted files

I decided to back up my University work over Christmas. I put all the work from my windows laptop onto an external hard drive and copy it over to the iMac computer. I had mind maps on the Mac that weren't on the windows laptop, for some reason still unknown to me, when I copied the stuff onto the Mac it deleted the stuff in the folder that was on the Mac and not on the external hard drive, so I have lost the mind maps that took me a week to do.
Is there anyway I can get them back?

Do you keep a Time Machine back-up of your Mac, or use any other back-up software?
If not, your choices are going to be limited, unfortunately. You're probably going to need something like this:
http://download.cnet.com/Data-Rescue/3000-2094_4-211375.html and even then it's not guaranteed.
If you haven't got a back-up you'd do best to stop using the Mac while you look for a solution, as the longer you do the less likely doing a full recovery of your files becomes.

  • Recovery of deleted files n95

    Hi
I recently had my phone stolen but was lucky to get it back. But unfortunately they deleted some very precious  photos.
I know its possible to recover deleted files from hardrives and SD cards using file recovery software.but my nokia n95 8gb the memory is built into the phone. anybody have any ideas how this could be done.
    thanks

Connect the phone to a computer in mass storage mode and try the file recovery software that you mentioned.
If the mass memory hasn't been used much it may be possible to retrieve the images.
If that fails then unfortunately you are out of luck unless you are willing to pay a large sum of money to a data recovery agency.

  • Recovery of deleted file in KM

    Hi everybody!
I´ve got a question about the recovery of single files which were deleted in a KM repository or a collaboration room. How can one recover such a file? There must be some way.
    Christian

    Hi Christian,
    I don´t believe this
Informatics isn't a matter of faith
Believe it or not, it's a fact.
    Is there any?
In general: No. But keep in mind how different KM repositories can be. As far as CM (DB) repositories are concerned, the DB backup is the only way. For other repositories / repository kinds other rules may hold (for filesystem repositories, filesystem backups may do the work, even if metadata would be lost which is stored in some DB).
    Hope it helps

  • Recovery of deleted files on bb q5

my bb q5 was sychronized with my laptop and I didnt no the files were connected to each otber, I deleted them by mistake, how can I recover them?

If they are stored on internal mamoery and you have no backup of the files, then they are gone
there are no recovery tools for the internal memory
for SD card you can recover files with a undelete progam on a PC

  • Unable To Delete Files from Desktop

I have a friend whose Mac Mini "suddenly" started preventing her from deleting files from her desktop. When I tried to drag the file to the Trash, the Mini makes a sound like the file was deposited in the Trash, but the icon remains on the desktop and there is no file in the Trash. I have repaired permissions and even ran FSCK -FY from single user mode. When I logged in under a different Administrator account, it worked perfectly. So, the question is "what preference file do I need to delete?"
    TIA.

It's an ownership problem of the Trash folder, not the file you are trying to put in the Trash. Any chance this file on the Desktop may have come from Windows?
I may have misunderstood. It sounded as if you were saying there was a connection between the Trash's ownership and Windows files. Sorry.
And it doesn't fix the problem, but it will tell us if anything can be deleted in the first place.

  • How to retrieve a deleted file

I accidentally deleted a file (.docx) that I had saved on my desktop, and then emptied my trash.  Is it possible to get it back???

Yes as long as you didn't use secure erase or have Filevualt enabled, but you have to do this right away as the area it's taking up has been allocated for overwriting. Works only for hard drives and it will cost about $200 or so for the drive and software.
Create a data recovery, undelete boot drive
Better to have backups of your data in case something like this occurs or your entire computer dies.
    Most commonly used backup methods
There is "undelete" type software if you install it will allow the termporary recovery of deleted files in case of accidents, search MacUpdate.com for it, however it has to be installed before the accidentail deletion occurs. It's worthless after the fact.

  • Disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files / empty trash securely

I just used the disk utility to prevent the recover of deleted files...
It created a recovery folder which I tried to empty trash securely...i the got a message saying there are some locked items and I responded to remove all items...
It would not let me do that the file stayed in the trash until I changed the setting and just emptied the trash the conventional way..
Can anyone tell me why that is happening???

  • [solved] Problem with ssd disk, deleted files don't free space?

    Hello.
I bought some time ago an ssd disk on which i installed arch. After some free time I changed my laptop optical drive with standard hdd and moved /home and folder with data (mainly music collection) to standard drive. To my surprise my ssd was filled as it were before. My fstab from beginning have had TRIM option enabled:
    LABEL=root / ext4 rw,noatime,discard,commit=600,barrier=0 0 1
    tmpfs /var/log tmpfs defaults,size=5% 0 0
    tmpfs /var/spool tmpfs defaults,size=5% 0 0
    LABEL=karta /run/media/kaira/karta/ ext4 rw,noatime,barrier=0,commit=600,data=writeback 0 1
    LABEL=home /home ext4 rw,noatime,barrier=0,commit=600,data=writeback 0 1
    LABEL=dane /dane/ ext4 rw,noatime,barrier=0,commit=600,data=writeback 0 1
where the last three lines were added after second disk was installed.
And now the great mystery for me:
    du -h / |sort -h -r|head -n 5:
    3,7G /
    2,7G /usr
    1,6G /usr/lib
    845M /usr/share
    771M /var
    df:
System plików rozm. użyte dost. %uż. zamont. na
    /dev/sdb1 118G 27G 90G 24% /
    devtmpfs 3,8G 0 3,8G 0% /dev

    tmpfs 3,8G 4,0M 3,8G 1% /run
    tmpfs 3,8G 0 3,8G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup

    /dev/sda1 50G 241M 49G 1% /home
    /dev/sdc1 30G 45M 29G 1% /run/media/kaira/karta
27G was the state before most data was transfered to different hard drive.
Both commands where executed after partition with music was unmounted.
I executed also fstrim / command, but it changed nothing.
Is this behavior normal, or maybe i didn't made something important/ my disk is damaged?
I know that 24% fulfillment is trivial, but now it definitely should show 3,5%.

Yes, I run this command as a root. I manage to repair this problem by mounting root partition in ubuntu live cd. I found folder which should get deleted, but it still was in filesystem. Unfortunetly I don't remeber, how i copy files. Propably i used rsync and forget to delete files. Now it's too late too check this theory, but I'm really happy with proper sizes:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sdb1 118G 3.6G 113G 4% /
    devtmpfs 3.8G 0 3.8G 0% /dev
    tmpfs 3.8G 6.0M 3.8G 1% /dev/shm
    tmpfs 3.8G 3.9M 3.8G 1% /run
    tmpfs 3.8G 0 3.8G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
    tmpfs 3.8G 356K 3.8G 1% /tmp
    tmpfs 389M 0 389M 0% /var/spool
    tmpfs 389M 32K 389M 1% /var/log
    /dev/sda2 410G 25G 381G 7% /dane
Lesson learned - never manage important system changes after getting up, without enough sleep time.
Thank you for you're help, and sorry for wasting time with my mistakes.

  • How To Prevent ATV From Deleting Previously Synced Files?

    Hi,
Due to the limited size of my laptop hard drive I have to move the downloaded movies and music video from iTunes to an external USB hard drive after syncing them with the ATV.
I double click in iTunes the moved file to relocate it again on the external drive so it won't appear as a missing or deleted file.
But just today, iTunes started to sync a new downloaded movie and erased all of the files that I removed from the laptop hard drive.
So who can I prevent ATV from deleting those relocated files?
    Thanks.

if itunes opens up and the external drive is not attached, it is going to flag any file it references on the external drive as unavailable. if the file is not made available and located by itunes before the apple tv syncs with itunes, then the file will also be made unavailable to the apple tv (correct me if i've got this wrong, but i'm fairly certain this is how it goes).
itunes and apple tv utilize a sync relationship, and in any device/host sync relationship one or the other has to win during a database conflict.
iTunes always wins if the file originates from itunes (i say this because when you purchase from the ATV, the ATV will push the file to iTunes that first time, but afterward if you remove it from iTunes it will be removed from the Apple TV. This is a little bit off subject but it is relevant as it is the only time the Apple TV gets to win). Otherwise, if it's not in iTunes, it won't be on the apple tv (when the two sync with each other).
if you want to prevent the ATV from deleting the relocated files, make sure they are available in itunes when the ATV syncs with itunes.
let us know if you make any observations where the files are available and this continues to happen.

  • Photoshop/Bridge - CS6, prevents deleting files.

    What is causing this?
Photoshop/Bridge prevents deleting files. After I'm done with a job I store it on the server then try to delete the folder or files I've finished from my desktop.
    No can do.
I found I have to shut down Photoshop and Bridge then I can move the stuff into trash.
    Real PITA
What causing this & what's the solution (if any)?
    cvt

Photoshop doesn't keep files open after saving.  Bridge might have a bug, or you may be using a third party plugin with a bug (certain font managers have had problems like this).

  • Deleted File Recovery software?

Is there deleted file recovery software which is cheap or has a limited demo or something?
I accidentally deleted some files, but they're not worth hundreds of dollars to me. I'd just like to get them back if I could.
I downloaded some software which says it can find them, but I have to pay -- so, how do I know it will actually work after I pay?
I'd like to get some samples, like, have it just retrieve ten files or something, just to prove it works!
    Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Hi John,
As Kurt suggests, Data Rescue is a commercial product that you will have to purchase to retrieve your files if you choose but it at least allows you to test the demo first to see if it can scan and find your files and to test to see if it will retrieve one file of 500k in size.
Dr. Smoke, of the X-Lab, has an excellent FAQ explaining data recovery that can be found here.
One major point, if you're not aware, is that you should not use the affected drive until you recover the files as the more you use the computer the more chance that the files will be overwritten and unretrievable.
    hope that helps some,

  • Delete files when my computer is in recovery mode?

Help.  I need to delete files.  My imac is in recovery mode ad I can't re load mountain lion w/out deleting files!

Some things won't work but you should be able to offload files while running in safe mode.

  • Deleted files recovery

Is there a way to recover a deleted files (picture) ?  It is still on my apple tv and on my iphoto library (but no possible to view the large size).

If you deleted photos stored in your iPhoto Library from the Finder, you have left iPhoto with just the thumbnails. There's no easy recovering from that if you don't have backups.
What generation Apple TV do you have? I have a 3rd gen Apple TV, but am not familiar with the older models. The 3rd gen Apple TV does not have any kind of storage for photos. It can use photos from your iCloud account's Photo Stream. Is that photo still in the Photo Stream? If not, it's possible that the Apple TV is simply displaying a cached version of that photo, but I doubt there's any way to extract that cached photo from the Apple TV.
If the photo is well and truly gone, and you don't have backups, see Recovering deleted files.
