Preventing Custom / Preview icons

Hello
I am running Mac OS X 10.5.7 and want the Operating System to leave my icons alone. For example, I prefer my PDF documents to have the generic Adobe PDF icon instead of a custom icon indicative of what's in the document. Likewise with my other document types!
I want to do this for two reasons:
1. My computer would start up a lot quicker if it didn't spend all that time converting icons to their custom "preview" icons.
2. It would be easier to quickly identify at a glance what type of documents I'm looking at.
I thought there was a setting somewhere in preferences, but can't seem to find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Joe.

Hi Joe,
That setting is configured on a per-folder basis. With said folder open in its own window, bring up the 'View Options' from the 'View' menu and uncheck "Show icon preview" box. Should you want this to be your default setting, click on the "Use as defaults" button.

  • How to get rid of ALL the preview Icons in all the folders?

I want all the files on my computer to show the generic icon of the app, not the preview of it. I use very small icons and icon preview is a torture instead of pleasure – finding things in folders is an unbearable adventure.
I have untaged the "Show Icon Preview" in the 'View Options' tab and clicked 'Use as Defaults' button. Then restarted the Finder. It did the job for most files, but there are still many images, that still have their preview on.
I suppose that some Applications like Photoshop add custom previews to files when saving them, and those custom previews probably override the folder settings.
So - is there any way to get rid of all those CUSTOM image previews as well?

The Finder will display custom thumbnails when these are present, it can't help itself. For those programs that create their own custom thumbs the only thing you can do is re-set the preference from within the application itself to not create them, and to remove them from files that already have them. Someone has probably written an Applescript or Automator Workflow to remove them recursively from a folder full of images. You can ask in those forums. Otherwise you have to do GetInfo on the file, select the wee little icon at the top of the GetInfo window and press delete or cut the icon.

  • Thumb Drives Icons only shows file Previews Icon

    Hello all,
I am trying to change my icons on my thumb drives and External HDDs and I have googled on how to do this which requires you to open get info and copy and paste. But when I do this I keep getting the wrong I icon I keep getting the preview Icon. I have tried different formats jpg, png, ico, also icns but I sill keep getting the preview. How can I get this to work or am I missing something ? I am new to macs so bare with me

You have to actually open the image you want to use IN Preview, select all, copy and then paste in the destination item's GetInfo window. If the item you are copying from already has a custom icon you can can copy from its GetInfo window then paste in the destination GetInfo. However, it sounds like that is not the case with the files you are attempting to use as the source.

  • On Mac OS 10.9 with Adobe CC 2014, preview icons not displaying

We've had increasing problems with icons in Photoshop, ever since CS6. We're now on PS CC 2014 and the latest MAC OS 10.9, and the issue with icons is becoming unbearable! We simply can't find things anymore, and it's starting to really be a problem.
At first it was just the little tiny preview icon in the title bar that disappeared and just shows a generic icon. But now the finder preview is not showing correctly with PSD files, and TIF files created in Photoshop. We thought it might be an OS issue, so we followed steps to delete the com.apple.preview.plst file and restart. But the problem persists. HOWEVER, if I open one of these files in GIMP, and then save, the icon comes back. Open the same file in PS and the icon disappears again.
Any idea how to fix this? It's driving us nuts.

    Chris
Why is it that when I re-save a TIF file in GIMP that I get an image preview, but not with Adobe PS?
You've been blaming this on Apple since CS6 and over the versions I've grown to really resent your response on this forum.
Why does GIMP, a free program save thumbnails correctly but the most expensive image editing program cannot?
I'd at least like an answer to the GIMP question. Why does it work and PS does not?

  • Preview icon not showing when in thumbnail. (Sketchu

    Hello,
I recently updated my MBP to Yosemite and installed sketchup on it.
The preview icon of my sketchup files are not showing when in thumbnail. But as i increase the size of the icon from thumbnail in viewoption i.e from 64px x 64px to 124px x 124px it shows. So my icon is shown as blank without any app logo. Also when i change my view from thumbnail to coverflow or something it shows. Otherthan thumbnail everything works.
So where is the error in it?
    Please help...
    Thanks
    Amar

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Rest. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch:  Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.

  • Preview in Finder not loading. All my images have the Preview icon instead!

    Hi,
anybody experiencing the same problem as me?
All of a sudden my preview in finder doesn't work and all my picture preview icons became the "Preview" icon itself!
Here is how it looks like.. : http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/3414/picture37.png
Does anybody know how to get it back to normal because it is such a hassle to click on every single photo to find the picture that I want!
    Thanks!

Sounds like your LaunchServices database has gotten corrupted. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy & paste this one-line command into it, hit the return key, and restart.
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
    That should fix the problem.

  • Icon Creation Question -- What format are custom shaped icons saved as?

I have Adobe Photoshop CS and Adobe Illustrator CS. I am assuming that one of those are able to create custom shaped icon format images for using on Mac folders.
I am able to save usable icons for folders as .psd format.
However, they are always square or rectangular, with a blank background around a non-square/non-rectangular image.
I'm not able (don't know how) to save icons as custom shapes that only appear as the custom shape when in use on a folder.
    Examples
The .psd file in Photoshop is only the blue disc shape, but when it's saved, the white background is added by default.

I know how to use the Save for Web feature in Photoshop using the .png-24 selection which produces a transparent background, but that format doesn't work for icons.
What format(s) do I need to save images as to use as custom shaped icons on Mac folders?
A detailed reply would be very appreciated.

The easiest way to get what you want is try Iconographer:
    http://www.mscape.com/products/iconographer.html
It is quick, easy and a mere $15. You can do it "by hand" but it can get a bit complicated or iffy.
    1. Create the icon you want in Photoshop, format is 128x128 pixels at 72dpi.
    2. Make sure you have a transparent background layer, flatten the file
    3. Save as a tif file: myicon.tif
    4. Launch Terminal and type the command:
    tiff2icns /path/to/myicon.tif
You can get Terminal to fill in the path for you, just put a space after the command, then drag the file into the Terminal window and drop it.
Hit the Return key. With luck you will have a new file "myicon.icns" with the transparency preserved.
    5. Actually using your icon requires the icns file to actually display the icon so you can copy it from the GetInfo window. The only sensible way to do this is to download the freeware program icns2icon:
    http://www.icons.cx/goodies/
    6. Launch icns2icon and drop your new icon file on it. Now when you do GetInfo on the file there will be an icon to copy.
Iconographer is easier and better. If you want to make a bunch of custom icons with transparent backgrounds it is well worth the 15 bucks.

Do you have multiple Web Servers in your environment? You may want to check the PUBLIC folder on each to make sure everything is intact. Bouncing the World Wide Web Publishing service may also help.

  • Assign custom TOC icons

I am working with RoboHelp 8. In RoboHelp 6, I was able to assign an icon to a book or page in the TOC. I'm trying to do it in RoboHelp 8 (according to the steps below from RH's help), but I don't have the "Image" field (step 2) to select an image.
I will try and attach a screen capture so you can see what I'm referring to, but last time I tried, the image didn't get through to the forum.
    Thanks,
    Debbie
Assign custom TOC icons (HTML Help)
In the Table Of Contents pod, right-click a book or page. Select Properties.
    Click the Advanced tab.
Under Image, Auto indicates that the book or page uses the standard icon.
From the pop-up menu, select an icon.
You can assign other icons to books and pages after you add the bitmap file (BMP) to your project.
(Optional) Select Mark As New to display the standard icon with a red star. The star indicates to users that the TOC item contains new information.
    Click OK.
Version-control projects may have more options.
Note: The Table Of Contents pod displays all books and pages with the standard icons regardless of the selection you make at the Advanced tab. After you generate the project, you can view icons in the Contents pane.

That help topic relates to HTML Help (.CHM file) output only. Assuming you are outputting CHM files, what you need to do is set your default single source layout to Microsift HTML Help in your Single Source Layouts pod.

  • Preview Icons vanishing when dragged into new folder.

When dragging an image file (with a preview icon showing the small representation of that image) is dragged from it's original folder to a new one, the preview disappears and is replaced with a generic "EPS" or "Jpeg" grey icon. Futher, if I get information about the file, the preview picture of the image also shows just a generic file type icon, even though I can see clearly the preview icon. This is so frustrating, as I must then batch process images in photoshop to have a new preview image show up.
To make things even more annoying, the process is inconsistent. If I drag the a eps file from the original folder with the image preview into a new folder, the preview may be missing. If I drag and drag, creating multiple copies of the file in a new folder "hnuewf.eps 1, .2, .3 etc...) almost always one of these attempts will copy correctly, with the preview intact. What the heck is going on!

    Partilly solved by rebuilding permissions....

  • PDF Preview icon

Not sure if this is since the 10.4.8 update, but when I Print>Save as PDF, the PDF icon that generated is just a white icon, instead of the blue Preview icon. This happens about half the time. It seems to open & display the contents OK, but I wonder if I send in an email if it will act as if it's a corrupt file? Any ideas how to fix this.
I do have "Show icon preview" selected in in the View Options

Still have the issue, but I guess no one can help on this one.

  • Wrong preview icon and image in finder

I recently upgraded my computer - now running snow leopard 10.6.8. I have noticed that when I save files in certain applications (eg. ai CS5 files)  the preview icon in finder windows is not of the application but just a blank page icon instead. Also on the desktop it's just a blank doc page not the ai. icon.
I have managed to manually alter a few files by clicking and dragging the ai. icon in the Get Info window from the bar to the ai. icon beneath and the application icon does remain then but each new file has the same problem - I don't want to keep altering them manually for every file.
A second, related (I suppose) problem is that the actual preview image in the finder window is wrong - not the last saved image (or even a previously saved image) but a combination of several turned off layers in the case of ai. files. The preview image is wrong also if opening direct from illustrator CS5.
    Thanks for any ideas.

Yes this is one of those commands that takes off on it's own.  That is why I specified to let it run it coarse and will put you back out at the prompt when complete.  Sounds like you did it correctly.
I would advise booting off install DVD and run both Repair Disk and Repair Permissions.

    From there....

If you ran the delta update through the Software updater,  I would reinstall the 10.6.8 combo on top of what you have.  Many curious anomaly can be straightened out with this:  http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Still repair permissions before and after Combo-Update.

  • Preview icons on desktop

Just upgraded to 10.9.2 Mavericks.  Whereas before Preview icons in Finder showed a picture of what the file is, now it only shows the "Preview" icon.  Did programmers forget this very nice feature?

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer ones.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might need to redo the View settings after an update.

  • Usual preview instead of custom preview after canceling of step.

    Hi.
I try to made workitem with dialog, like Form step. Macros u201Cexit_cancelledu201D used in method in case of user cancel form.
Also u201CAdaptation work item preview in Business Workplaceu201D function assigned to step.
SBWP preview shows screen from my preview function at first selection of step. But standard preview appear after execution of step when step canceled.
Is any idea how to show custom preview after cancellation.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi again.
I repeat that error without programming.
Create new workflow. Add any small structure to container. In my case it has a type BAPI_DRAWKEY.
    Add Form step.
    In Form step:
Assign self as handler. Set «Action» = display. Generate new screen to the clear function group. On the tab u201CWork item Displayu201D set u201CAdaptation of work item preview in Business Workplace Function Moduleu201D equals SWL0_PREVIEW_DEMO_HTML (it from demo button).
    Activate workflow and run.
    Complete workflow.
Go to the transaction SBWP. Open folder Outbox -> Work items executed by me. Find and select test step.
Preview will show HTML from FM SWL0_PREVIEW_DEMO_HTML (u201CThis could be your own HTML document...u201D).
Press button u201CDisplayu201D and get out from step by button u201CBacku201D.
Preview will show usual form u201CTips & tricks: u2026u201D instead of HTML from FM SWL0_PREVIEW_DEMO_HTML.
What can I do to resolve it?
