Preventing MacBook Pro from sleepting when the cover is closed

I'd like to prevent the system from sleeping when the cover is closed, at least when it is on the power supply.
Right now, it sleeps whenever the cover is closed. As a result, my nightly backup (ordinarily scheduled for the wee hours) doesn't run.
Also, I want to use the laptop at home with an external screen, keyboard and mouse, and it would be convenient to fold it up to get it out of the way when doing so.
Thanks,
-W.

' Overheating in clamshell mode is rearely an issue if you're running on the 9400M and the system- / resource-demands aren't particularly hectic. It is something one should always just keep an eye on though anyways - just to be safe, no?
' Otherwise - there is a pay-for (shareware) program you can download and install that will give you the facility you're looking for... I'm afraid I can't remember it's name right now though... Alternatively - and the solution I myself use - try downloading and using a mini-app called "InsomniaX" - for which I can't provide a link I'm afraid, but a Net-search will quickly turn up! It's freeware (donations possible but not required) and works great - a number of options available to tune it somewhat to your needs!
' This should help ya!

    Hi,
    Have you tried
    1.leaving the screen flipped open,
    2.connecting power
    3. connecting external monitor; waiting for it to 'wake up';
then 4. closing lid of MBP to activate clamshell mode?

  • Can I wake my Macbook Pro from Sleep with the Remote app on the iPhone?

I can't access my Macbook Pro remotely, specially after several hours of inactivity,, whenever I try to access content of my library through the remote app or the Apple TV I'm unable to wake my Macbook Pro up.
My Macbook Pro is 2012 model (the last with de CD Drive) and it's running the Maverick OS, my questions are:
    * I'm unable to find the "Unable Power Nap while plugged" option on the energy saver tab... is that because the model of my laptop doesn't support that?
    * In order to access content from my library remotely, should the "Computer Sleep" option on the energy saver be on "Never" instead of the "1 hour" that I'm currently using... or is there a way to still be able to wake up the laptop with those settings

Is there a way to close the lid on my MacBook Pro without putting it to sleep so that it will continue to play music via USB to my stereo?
I want to use my Macbook Pro to play music on Amarra or iTunes via USB to a DAC connected to my stereo.  The MBP will be on a shelf in my stereo cabinet where the lid cannot remain open.  I do not wish to connect an external mouse, keyboard or display to the MBP.  Is there a way to keep playing the music with the lid closed?

  • Logic Pro prevents MacBook Pro from sleeping

I've been having trouble of late with my MacBook Pro -- it has been refusing to go into sleep mode on its own. I sat down and did a bunch of careful experiments turning various things off and on, and I've narrowed it down to Logic Pro 8! If this application is running, my MBPro will not sleep automatically. If I exit the application, it sleeps like a baby. In any case, I can force the machine to sleep manually no problem.
I am not sure whether this problem first occurred with 10.5.4 or 10.5.5.

I'm afraid I don't find these responses to be very compelling, sorry.
First, it has always been trivially easy to turn off the sleep function on an Apple machine. Everyone who owns an Apple knows how to do this simple thing.
Second, sleep does not cause failure of any kind for properly working audio hardware and other attached devices. I have three audio interfaces connected to my machine, plus an eSATA drive, external video, and ethernet cable, and the machine sleeps and wakes up just fine. No problem. This has nothing to do with audio or real-time anything, it's just a question of writing a device driver correctly. It would be the same for a printer or a camera or anything else attached to the computer. I have one device that does not sleep and wake properly: a western digital hard drive when connected by eSATA via the ExpressCard/34 slot. Again, there's no relation to audio or recording or Logic.
I wonder if there's anyone from Apple reading this newsgroup who can comment on the actual intention. If it is indeed to disable sleep, it would be nice to know. If on the other hand, it's unintentional, maybe it means that some other setting is wrong or there's something to be done about it.

  • Upgrade to Mavericks 10.9.4 prevents Macbook Pro from booting

It is a 2011 i7 Macbook Pro. It won't boot when powered. Although I just found out that if I unplug the Thunderbolt cable, it does. But I don't want to be plugging and unplugging that cable all the time. I have an external monitor and a CalDigit interface connected there.
Also, starting the computer is so much slower now.
What's the best way to go back, preferably to Mountain Lion. I don't like Mavericks. Only upgrading to update Final Cut Pro, but that was the only reason.
    Thanks.

  • SuperTalent SSD prevents MacBook Pro from booting FreeDOS or Windows

On October 24, 2009 I posted the following message:
I own a MacBook Pro (early 2008 model, with silver-coloured screen) and have recently equipped it with an Super Talent UltraDrive MD 256GB Solid-State-Disk, Serial No. P582930-EDBX-8319020.
The SSD has firmware 1571, causing wake-up-from-sleep problems. The vendor has fixed this in firmware 1819, and he is providing a FreeDOS ISO image to boot the Mac from and to upgrade the SSD's firmware. I have downloaded the FW1819_ISO.iso image and have created a bootable CD.
When I am booting the MacBook Pro while holding the option key, I get presented with the choice of either booting from my Macintosh HD or a CD named "Windows". When I choose the CD, the CD spins up for one minute, then stops spinning. The Mac hangs and has to be rebooted.
When I am booting my wife's iMac with the same CD, everything works fine and I get presented with the firmware update screen in DOS-style as described in the upgrade guide.
By now, I have found the solution, which is more of a workaround. The boot problems ARE CAUSED by the presence of the SSD. As soon as I replace it with the former HD, both FreeDOS and a Windows XP installation CD boot fine. I have not found out WHY this happens, but I worked around the problem by removing the SSD, placing it into a DELL PC, upgrading the firmware and placing it back in the MacBookPro. While the firmware upgrade worked fine, the boot problems remain the same. As I do not use a bootcamp partition, I cannot comment if it were possible to boot from the bootcamp partition.
Hope this helps anybody besides me...

It was a firmware bug on the SSD - no way around but removing it and updating it from a Windows PC.

  • How to erase a Macbook Pro Hard drive when the screen is dead

I have a Macbook Pro (2007) with a dead screen and a motherboard issue. Just bought a new macbook and i was planning on transfering the hard drive over and selling my pro on ebay for parts, Is there anyway i can securely delete my data from the computer without seeing it on the screen before i decide to sell it?

Be sure your dead Mac isn't covered by this program:

If it is, you can get a free repair, and it would be worth a lot more on EBay.

  • Can I upgrade to the new MacBook Pro from PowerBook copying the hard disk?

I have a Power Book G4 17", now I'm going to buy a new MacBook pro 17" and want to transfer the same software (I mean the whole content of my actual HD) to the new MacBook Pro using SuperDuper!
I want to know if the Intel based MacBook Pro can run the same operating system configured in the PowerBook or I must install first the Mac OSX on the new MacBook pro and then reinstalla manually all the applications/documents?

    Hi Marcello,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
No to both of your questions:
No, you cannot clone the PPC hard disk to a new Intel disk. The systems are completely different.
No, you don't have to reinstall all your software manually.
You have to install Tiger from the install DVD that shipped with that MacBook Pro. You CANNOT use any other install disk, so take care you don't damage it! Once this is done you can transfer all your data, applications and settings from the old computer using the migration assistant in /Applications/Utilities.
Be aware that there might be problems with applications that are not universal binaries and require Rosetta emulation: Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated.

  • I just downloaded the recent Maverick Software Update onto my Macbook Pro 15" and when the download/reset finished, my screen was completely black and I have not been able to get it back since. Help?

My computer had been wanting to do a software update, with what I believe was the Mavericks Software, for a few weeks but I had been putting it off. When I finally decided to install the update onto my Macbook Pro 15" today, my screen went completely black and I haven't been able to get it back since. The computer still turns on, I can tell because my caps lock key still glows when I press it and my volume buttons still make sounds when I press them. However, I cannot see anything on the screen. I don't even get the grey start up screen when I reset my computer. I have tried the SafeMode Restart where you hold Shift while it is restarting and the Display Reset in which you hold Command + Option (alt) + R + P until you hear the start up noise twice, and neither have worked. Any other advice on what I can do to get my screen back without having to send my computer away to be fixed?

  • Waking 2012 Macbook Pro from sleep when on mains power

My Macbook takes ages to wake from sleep *when its on mains power* and has been left for a few hours. In contrast, it will wake instantly when on battery power, as my old 2005 ibook did.
However when on mains when you open the lid, you get a progress bar at the bottom of the screen. When this has completed, it displays the login screen but without focus or ability to move the cursor. A pinwheel revolves for a while. After the pinwheel has finished, as soon as you touch the trackpad, you get the beach ball and finally (after a total of about 45 seconds) you get to log in.
Apart from the fact that this doesn't make any sense for a slow wake up on mains and fast wake up on battery, the manner is which it is executed is so cumbersome and un-Apple I'm sure there has to be something wrong, although I've searched extensively and can't find anything to fix it (Tried resetting the SMC etc)
    Any help massively appreciated!

  • My macbook pro simply dies when the battery runs low

I've got a MBP, running 10.6, and as of a few months ago, whenever the battery gets low to just a few percent, the computer simply shuts off.  It used to go to sleep, which would allow me to plug it in and restore to where I was when it went into standby.  It doesn't do that now, just a hard shut down and I've lost anything that was open.  Any ideas how I can correct this and get my computer to sleep instead of dying?  Thank you

It's getting low but not that low,
    Try this:
Note: MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SM
