Preventing OS 10 Printers from appearing in OS 9 Classic

Any existing OS 10 defined printers are automatically 'populated' into the OS 9 Classic printer list when you load Classic. They are easily distinguishable as the OS 10 driver will appear as "HP3800" and the OS 9 driver appears as "HP3800@appletalkpath". [where appletalkpath represents whatever your appletalk network is named].
However, I have some clients that would prefer that their OS 9 applications do not show OS 10 printer drivers as an option because some of their OS 9 based applications do not print correctly when using the OS 10 drivers. Is there a way to prevent this 'auto population' from happening?
all   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

No, there's no way to turn off the "auto-population."
Based on your example of using an HP, selecting the driver in the Chooser should be sufficient to distinguish between the OS 9 and OS X printers since the OS X printers only appear in the Print Dialog when LaserWriter 8 is the active driver.
If that doesn't cut it, your clients will have to be creative in coming up with a solution for this, maybe using multiple printer preferences files and swapping them in and out depending on what printers they want to use.

  • When inserting a checkbox, how can I prevent the note box from appearing?

    To all,
    After -reluctantly- "upgrading" from Acrobat Pro 7 to Pro X I find this new version absolutely maddening.
    Pro 7's features were easy to find in the tool bar. Now in Pro X everything is "dumbed down" with everything "nested" into each other...
    But I whine and digress from my problem:
    QUESTION:
    When inserting a checkbox, how can I prevent the note box from appearing?
    With every insertion of a checkbox onto a form, a "notebox" appears.
    Thank you,
    Matt

    As you can see, when I add a checkmark to a page/form, a "note" is automatically added also. In my old Acrobat v. 7, this did not happen.
    Any ideas on how I can set Acrobat Pro X to NOT include this note?
    Thank you,
    Matt

    When used as an Activex control in windows How can I prevent the "Q" logo from appearing between streaming videos?

    Hello Cgifford,
    Welcome to National Instruments Forums.
    To output your signal to the PFI lines,
    you can use external connectios between OUT0 and PFI lines. You can also use
    the backplane to do so by routing into the same RTSI line.
    1)
    On the SCOPE and FGEN, the name of the
    terminals are actually “PXI Trigger Line x/RTSIx” but on the 6602 you might
    need to route the signal using the property:
    You can also use the DAQmx route signal which perform the same opperation.
    2)
    This will depend on the frequency of
    your pulse train. If this is lower than about 10 ms, then you can probably
    place this on a loop and start and stop the acquisition every time. If the
    frequency is higher than this, you will have to use:
    -       Scripting on the FGEN side (read more)
    -       MultiRecord Fetch (more information in the scope help file
    section “Acquisition Functions Reading versus Fetching”).
    3)
    The short answer is yes. The longer one
    might depend on how tight you need the synchronization to be (us, ns, ps). For
    very tight synchronization, you should look into here.

  • How do you prevent MS-DOS window from appearing during Runtime.exec()?

    The question below was attached to the answer for Question of the Week No. 21. I'm having the same problem. Does anyone know the answer? Put another way does anyone know how javaw does it?
    Fri Dec 18 09:59:52 PST 1998
    rkarasek
    On Windows NT 4.0, how can I prevent CreateProcess()
    from creating a cmd.exe window when using javaw and
    Runtime.exec()? No such cmd.exe window is created if
    instead I run "java" from the command line.
    I have a C++ server named "foo", and have created
    a Java applcation with Swing GUI named "foo.java".
    This GUI captures configuration information and
    then uses Runtime.exec() to start the C++ app, with
    a socket established between the Java app and C++
    app for later communication.
    This is all working fine, and the Java application
    and GUI working as expected. When I run "java foo"
    from either the NT command shell (cmd.exe) or MKS
    Korn shell (sh.exe) the Java application/GUI starts,
    and when it calls Runtime.exec() my C++ process is
    started as what appears to be a child process of the
    "java" process, that is, no cmd.exe window is created
    during the Runtime.exec("foo.exe") call.
    However, when running the same Java application from
    a shortcut on the desktop via "javaw", when I invoke
    Runtime.exec() a cmd.exe window is created before my
    C++ server is started. While things are running
    ok and my Java app can still communicate with my
    C++ server, is there anyway I can prevent this
    cmd.exe window from being created, and instead, have
    my C++ server run as a child process of javaw (or
    an independent process without a cmd.exe)?

    cmd always opens a dos window - use another console interpreter instead or just call the programm directly.
    i.e.
    Runetime.exec("c:\\myprogram.exe");
    OR
    The following demonstrates executing a command without bringing up a popup. import java.io.*;
    public class Test {
      public static void main (String args[]) throws IOException {
        String[] command = {
          "C:\\winnt\\system32\\cmd.exe", "/y", "/c",
          "dir"};
        Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);
        InputStream is = p.getInputStream();
        InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
        BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
        String line;
        while ((line = br.readLine()) != null) {
          System.out.println(line);
    }However....
    According to bug number 4244515 in Sun's Bug Parade (http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4244515.html), javaw doesn't always work without bringing up new window.

  • How do I prevent lost devices tabs from appearing in sync drawer?

    Hi,
    Linked Firefox Sync accounts that are no longer in use--or useable--still appear in the synced tabs drawer in Firefox for Android as different groups of tabs under corresponding device names.
    This is despite trying to fix the issue by changing the account password from one device (PC) I still use and deleting my account/setting it up on Firefox for Android again with the new password.
    It seems Firefox for Android (or the Firefox Sync system generally) syncs tabs from offline devices linked to the same email address, despite them not being set-up using the same password.
    Whether this is by design, something not anticipated or just a bug, it makes it very tedious to scroll through the list of tabs from unwanted "devices" (actually, previous Firefox installations on my current PC, wiped along with entire drive during system reinstall) in order to find tabs directly under the device name corresponding to the current Firefox installation on my PC.
    I'm prepared to delete the entire account and de-associate all my devices at once, and start fresh, but that doesn't seem to be an option.

    Hi sqph,
    Thank you for your question, I understand that there is an issue with synced tabs on devices that no longer should be attached to the sync account.
    Unfortunately there currently is no way to mange individual sync profiles fro specific devices. The device will be detached if another user tries to connect the old device to the attached account because the cookie will expire. However the data that has synced will still show up on other devices.
    A fresh start is possible, I am currently asking if this is expected.

  • How to prevent artists in Soundtracks from appearing in artists view

    I buy many soundtracks. I would like to keep the artist name associated with the track on the CD, but I do not want the artist's name to appear in my Artist pane in browse mode, as I get a few hundred entries for artists with one or two songs. I understand I can change each CD to have the artist be Various Artists, but that seems the wrong solution. I have tried checking the "Compilation" button but that didn't have the desired effect.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Whatever you enter in the the artist field will appear in the artist column in Browse mode.
    You could always enter the artist name in the Grouping or Comment field and leave the artist field blank, but then you would have to use smart playlists to manage things.
    You could also use smart playlists in general to manage your collection so that you are only looking at a desired selection of your library rather than everything all at once. With good playlist management, you will not need to often enter the Library and you will not be overwhelmed with too many tracks at once.
    The Compilation setting groups tracks by different artists together as an album. Its purpose is so that you can select the album and see all the tracks associated with it. Otherwise, each track from the album with a different artist is treated as a separate album.

  • Prevent "Word Bookmarks" placeholder from appearing in PDF

    I am converting a Word 2007 document to PDF, selecting Convert Word Bookmarks, and editing it with Acrobat X Pro. Is there a setting to prevent the Word Bookmarks placeholder from being generated? I see no purpose to it and you have to move all the real bookmarks "out" of it before deleting it.

  • How do I prevent single-page PDFs from appearing inline in the email body?

    When someone sends me a multiple page PDF, the email contains an attachment icon.  When I click on the icon, the PDF is opened full-screen.  When I click on the screen, icons appear including a box with an arrow pointing up.  Clicking on this icon, lets me send the PDF to other applications such as iBooks.
    When someone sends me a single-page PDF, the PDF is displayed inline in the body of the email and I do not see a way to send the PDF to other applications.  Is there a way to view the PDF full-screen and thus send the document to other applications?
    I have the new iPad (v3) running iOS 7.

    What you are experience is totally normal and the expected behavior for a single page PDF as an attachment in an email. You can easily save it to another app by simply tapping and holding down on the open PDF and the Open In window will pop up. It may take a little practice but it does work. Just tap and hold down on the open PDF.

  • Disable "nearby printers" from showing in the printers dialog box

    I have been searching for an answer to this question ever since the "nearby printers" option was added to OS 10; Apple, please help. I found the exact same question posted here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11205661
    but that user describing the CUPS solution is not using network printers!
    How do I disable the nearby printers list from displaying at all in the printers drop down list available from a print dialogue box?
    I have over a hundred Macintosh workstations on the same VLAN subnet that spans multiple buildings.
    Each group of machines is assigned a specific printer to print to and we need to only allow the user to know that the installed printer is their only option.
    Thank you for your time and consideration; I appreciate it.

    This issue was finally resolved by focusing on the computers and/or printers announcing the multicast dns advertisement of available printers. When you need to disable printers from appearing in the "Nearby Printers" list, locate the machines advertising services and shut down the announcement; more below.
    If you are not certain which computer or printer is advertising its services, download a bonjour browser app first; I used:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/13388/bonjour-browser
    With that application launched, you can navigate down the browser list by expanding nodes and see which machines IP addresses are advertising an available printer service.
    Next, the remaining how-to requires you to know which machines IP addresses correspond with the machines.
    For Mac desktops, laptops, and servers that appear in the list, physically go to those devices and navigate the machine's System Preferences > Print & Fax  control panel and for each printer, make sure that the checkbox "Share this printer on the network" is unselected. Note that--if you already have not guessed--this will disable the ability for another machine to navigate and print to a shared printer on that machine. If, by necessity, that machine must share that printer, but you do not want its sharing to be discoverable, you must disable that machines multicast dns broadcast.
    Machines that must share printer queues where you would like to disable the machines multicast dns bonjour 'Printer Available' broadcast advertisement packets to remote machines in order to prevent them from showing up in Nearby Printer listings, you should follow the tutorial here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US
    or here:
    http://blog.tsunanet.net/2010/02/how-to-disable-bonjour-on-osx-106-snow.html
    Lastly, nearby printers listings will pick up the 'Printer Available' dns bonjour advertisements of the printers internal network configurations as well. To disable those, most modern network printers have built-in web administration control panels available to you from a web browser. For example, open up safari, type http://the-numeric-IP-address-of-your-printer-here
    and then select the enter key. You should then be able to navigate to the Networking configuration web page available from the printers web administration interface and disable bonjour/multicast print settings. Most HP network printer installations for example, only need port 9100 and IPP sevices enabled for typical Macintosh and Windows network printing services to work...and all other Miscellaneous printer services may usually be disabled. If you are not the network administrator, check with them to confirm that no other special network applications require additional non-typical print services.
    That's it! Once you have disabled or hidden the print services advertisements, the machines on the local network subnet will no longer show Nearby Printers.
    Hopes this helps someone!

  • How to stop concurrent programs from appearing in the SRS window ?

    Hi All,
    We have hundreds of custom concurrent programs registered under a custom application.
    Except for 3 hidden programs (which will be submitted internally from another concurrent program), all the others should appear in the SRS window. Therefore, instead of individually registering each program in the request group, we have registered the application itself, in the request group.
    However by doing this, the 3 hidden concurrent programs are also appearing in the SRS window. The concurrent program define form doesn’t allow us to uncheck the “show in SRS” checkbox if we have parameters define for a concurrent program.
    Is there any way that we can prevent these hidden programs from appearing in the SRS window, in our case?

    Hi,
    Create a new request group and add all but the 3 programs, using a PL/SQL script calling fnd_program.add_to_group.
    Regards,

    Is there a way to prevent the InDesign document name from appearing as part of the named destinations that get automatically generated when exporting to PDF?

    How can I prevent the the rows containing step name (Settings) and Staus (Done) from appearing in the report?

    Hi xiv015,
    If you do wish to change the formatting of the report, then you will have to do some report customization.  If you just want to leave out the steps with the Done status and keep the same report formatting then you can use Result Filtering exactly as Teds described above.  In Teststand go to Configure»Report Options and enter the expression Teds described in the expression box.  This will not include the steps with status equal to "Done" in the report.
