Preventing people from booting off CDs etc.

Is there any way to prevent someone who has physical access to an Intel iMac from booting from an external firewire drive or a CD (by pressing "T" or "C" during boot-up)?
regards,
Peter

Although I admit that this is certainly one of the more confusing KB articles, I don't think it meant to imply that you would be SOL if the OS got hosed. It would have been nice if they wrote a separate article for the Intel Macs.
For the Intel Macs there is software to change the password that is accessed from the installer DVD.

You can make sure that you use Adobe Reader as a PDF Viewer in the browser, although some browsers do not work with Adobe Reader.

  • iPhone Preventing iPhone from powering off during an app...

    Hello all,
Back with you for yet another question...
Anybody knows how to prevent the iPhone from powering off if no input while an app is running ?
I'm thinking of building an app that would launch an alarm when motion is detected, but the app would need to be run without the iPhone powering off...
Thanks for any ideas, I haven't found anything yet, but I know it's possible as many "official" apps support this...
    Thanks.

Ok, we're talking about the same thing. It's called "system sleep" in the docs, and the user setting under Settings->General is called "Auto-Lock" in English. This is how to turn Auto-Lock off for your application:
    [UIApplication sharedApplication].idleTimerDisabled = YES;
Here is the precaution from the UIApplication reference:
Important: You should set this property only if necessary and should be sure to reset it to NO when
the need no longer exists. Most applications should let the system turn off the screen when the idle
timer elapses. This includes audio applications. With appropriate use of Audio Session Services,
playback and recording proceed uninterrupted when the screen turns off. The only applications that
should disable the idle timer are mapping applications, games, or similar programs with sporadic
    user interaction.

  • Screen flash & restart from boot off another disk

I tried to boot off another disk by pressing option/alt at startup but when I select the disk I want, my screen flashes and my mac restarts. I tried using both rEFIt and rEFInd, but none of them appear on startup. Does any of this have anything to do with the fact that I changed some startup flags so that it always boots into verbose mode? (the flag is -v)

Using Snow Leopard forum is probably your best bet.

Mac: can't get by without bootable backups, even if you use TimeMachine, clone your system. Save you all this fuss and work.
Then invest in high quality disk repair and maintenance program.

Now, have you Googled for this?
have you looked at reports about 500GB drives used in some Macs that had issues and were offered firmware update for the drive?

  • External hard drive with Time Machine prevents IMac from Booting

I run Time Machine without partitions on a G-Tech external hard drive.
My iMac OS X 10.5.4 won't boot unless I first power off the hard drive. I then have to power on the hard drive after the iMac is on to see the hard drive image load on the desktop.
    Any ideas?

TimeMachine is designed to perform one full backup when it is first connected to your computer and from then on back up only the files you add or edit. Opening the TimeMachine drive's backup folder from the Finder is basically a no-no. Access TimeMachine via the TimeMachine application.
Assuming you frequently plug the TimeMachine drive in and let it backup and assuming the newer files are on the computer - they are being backed up and TimeMachine will be able to restore the entire drive if/when it is needed.
Just keep these things in mind. TimeMachine runs every hour (when it is connected to your computer - so be sure to connect it at least once a day and let it do a backup) and backs up new and edited files. It is guaranteed to keep any file that is currently on your computer. If you delete a file from your computer TimeMachine may delete it if extra space is needed. The drive you use for TimeMachine really shouldn't be used for any other purpose.

  • New kernel prevents computer from booting

i installed kernel26-scsi 2.6.13.4-1 by means of pacman about a week ago, ran lilo, rebooted to find that before lilo loaded the screen had a bunch of "99"s printing across the screen. Once they stopped printing the processor hung. Every time i restart this happens. I booted to knoppix and installed the same kernel again but it still wouldn't boot. so I booted to knoppix again copied the contents of my scsi that i was trying to boot from to my ide and wiped my scsi. I put in the arch 0.7 cd and did an ftp install on the scsi drive. I installed kernel24-scsi since i had trouble with doing a fresh install with udev, lilo, and the kernel26-scsi, hoping that when i got it running i would be able to put kernel 2.6 on it. it still boots to a bunch of "99"s printed accross the screen and stalls the cpu. Is this some kind of hardware issue with the new kernel or can anyone help me solve this problem?

As you have not told us you where prepared for udev/devfs - and 80% of help calls here and in irc have been udev related - phrakture had to guess - he did a quick shot and missed. So what?
Let's see if we can help you.
Unfortunately, I don't use or kn ow lilo very well. As far as I know, lilo has some strange issues if beeing used in a dual boot to windows or linux scenario, and some other strange behaviours. Furthermore, 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 etc seemes to be a lilo message that should tell you lilo can't get further then stage one. This can be a damaged mbr, for example, or if windows has repaired the mbr and destroyed lilo, or a physically damaged hard disk. Have you rerun "lilo" or "liloconf"? They will reinstall LILO to the drive and make the second stage loader look in the right spot...which apparently it is not, hence the L 99 99 99 99 ...
As you tried a reinstall using ftp, I think you could try cd based install, to be sure. I would recommend to use grub instead of lilo.

  • Thinkpad X130e AMD e300 approved minipci network card and UEFI preventing Fedoraliveusb from booting

I am just wondering where can I find the list for approved minipci wireless network card or disable the UEFI lock for it
I am trying to install Killer NIC N1103 on it
    ""ERROR
1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in Power off and remove the miniPCI network card.""
One more thing is there anyway to disable the UEFI lock so I can boot from my Fedora live usb?

    Hello,
As far as I know, Lenovo offers no way to disable the whitelisting for MiniPCIe cards in the BIOS/UEFI firmware.
You may be able to find firmware that does this from a third-party, but I would imagine that installing it voids your warranty.  At least until Lenovo-provided firmware is reinstalled.

  • How can I prevent Firefox from cutting off the title of a webpage for use as a file name when printing/saving as PDF if there's a / in it?

Like it says in the question - when I try to print/save a webpage as a PDF, Firefox (version 36.0, Windows 8.1 64bit, German) usually uses the page's title as the file name. Slashes are, of course, not allowed in file names, but instead of just leaving leaving it out or replacing it with a hyphen, the title is cut off and everything before the last slash is gone, which in some cases results in very odd and misleading file names.
Is this a known bug? I couldn't find anything. So I'm just wondering if there's either going to be a fix anytime soon, or whether there is a simpler solution than to generate a different title sans slashes specifically for Firefox users.
Thanks in advance for Your help!

  • Weird issue with DSMOS preventing me from booting

I have a 13" MBP that had a failing HD. I installed a 128GB Crucial HD and put the 10.6.8 image I use on similar MBPs on it and it would freeze on boot with the "waiting for DSMOS" issue. I got my Snow Leopard disc and reinstalled (without erasing drive) and it booted. Then when I tried to install the OS update it stopped booting at DSMOS again. When I wipe the drive and install from my Snow Leopard disc then try updates it does the same thing. I have the 10.7 USB drive and that freezes on boot after re-partitioning the drive. Does anyone have any idea how I can get this thing to boot with an updated OS?
I believe it also needs a firmware update but I can't get that without doing the OS update. I suspect that could be part of teh problem.

  • Applemtp.sys (Trackpad) prevent Windows from booting

I just installed Windows with Boot Camp 3.0 (310) and the drivers on my CD with my new Macbook Pro.
Windows don't seems to boot and take many minutes to boot when the applemtp.sys is here (it's the trackpad drivers). It show the Windows logo at startup and between this and the Windows logon screen, it have a black screen for a long time (at least five minutes when it decide to open Windows).
To be able to boot rapidly, I need to disable this file by renaming it applemtp.sys.bck. All work perfectly except I disable trackpad features (scroll, right click...).
Any ideas? I really miss these mouse's features!
    Thx

The driver version is 2.1.2.112 and I tried with 2.1.2.100 without more success. I'll try to find older drivers version to view if that help!
    Thx

  • Can I share a file but prevent people from downloading it?

Tem como subir um PDF para o Acrobat.com, com link para compartilhar, para que pessoas possar ver mais não possam fazer download?

    Hi Everton,
If you share the link, folks will be able to download your file. But, if you have Acrobat, you could secure the file to disallow any changes or printing (among other actions). If you don't have Acrobat, you can try it for free for 30 days. See www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

  • Trouble booting off FW drive from PBook

I just got a LaCie Porsche Firewire/USB drive to use as a backup for my 1.5 GHz PowerBook G4 (running 10.4.8).
I used SuperDuper to clone the enitre PBook drive to the LaCie. Everything went well, but it won't startup from the LaCie. It shows up in the Startup Disk Pref Pane, but even if I pick it, it boots from the internal. Holding Option doesn't bring it up in the list of disks. Holding shift-command-option-delete gives the Question Mark for a second, then it proceeds to boot from the internal drive.
I know this clone works, because I booted successfully from the LaCie on my G4 iBook using the Pref Pane as well as the Option key method.
What could be going on with my PowerBook that's preventing it from booting from the Firewire LaCie?
I've repaired permissions on all drives several times now. I booted into safe mode and repaired permissions from that level.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Bjorn,
Thanks for the reply. I was just about to give CCC a try, but I wanted to use SuperDuper, due to the "sandboxing" and easier incrementals in the paid version. So I gave my setup one more scan and noticed that when I formatted the new LaCie drive, I only set the desktop volume to Extended-journaled, not the main drive itself (it was still set to MS-DOS or something.)
I reformatted the main drive and the desktop volume in Disk Utility, re-cloned with SuperDuper, and the PowerBook booted from the LaCie, first try.
Thanks so much for the suggestions. I saw a bunch of OF comments regarding firewire drives and was looking for how to do it.
So add "Make sure your new drive is actually formatted properly" to the troubleshhooting list for external drive/cloning/booting. Duh.

  • Web Gallery: Preventing Users from Downloading Photos

    Hi,
Ive recently uploaded a web gallery (wedding pictures) from iPhoto and I need to secure it. So far Ive password protected the web gallery, so that it is not accessible to the public. Ive also checked the option to prevent people from downloading pictures.
When I login to the Gallery, I find the "Download" button for each picture is greyed out, but then there is nothing stopping me from right-clicking on the image and saving it to the hard drive. Is there something Im missing here, or is this a bug in the Web Gallery?
    Mark

    Mark:
As already pointed out there's no way from stopping viewers from taking screenshots of your photos. You can, however, add a watermark to your photos to identify the owner. You can use an image editor like Photoshop Elements (used in the example) or one of the many watermarking applications available. Go to VersionTracker.com and do a search for watermark to find the various candidates.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • A way to prevent photos from being downloaded?

I remember seeing an option one time about allowing people to download images on your site that you created using iweb but I never messed around with it. So is there a way to do something that would prevent people from taking your photos? I am asking because I do photography work. There are a lot of sites out there that won't allow you to right click your mouse and snag the photo. Just wondering if iWeb offered anything like that.

    DVX100Shooter wrote:

The only thing iWeb offers in that regard is, if your photos are on a Photos template page, you can set the "Photo Download Size" to "None" in iWeb's Inspector > Photos tab:
...Then the Download button won't appear. But iWeb doesn't prevent right-click downloading.
