Preview 4.1 Markup

Hi, I'm trying to highlight a pdf in preview, but when I go to tools on the menu bar and hover over markup all the options are gray, I can't select them to use them. How do I activate markup?

  • The Markup Extension in Preview

    Is it just me or is the markup extension in the new Preview significantly worse than the markup tools in Mavericks' Preview?  I use Preview a lot to annotate powerpoints in PDF format.  So I will create text boxes and arrows and lines quickly in accordance with a lecture that accompanies the powerpoint.  In Mavericks it was great, and there really was no way to do it faster than it was - you select text boxes, and then draw them where you want.  You select lines, make it an arrow and then draw the arrows with a motion from point A to point B.  And if you needed to draw a bunch of arrows, you could just draw them one after another.  Same with text boxes.
    Now, however, Preview uses the Markup extension (I think).  Now when you want to draw a text box, you have to click the text box button, which puts a placeholder box in the center of the page.  You can then start typing, and then you have to put the box where it should go.  To type another one, you have to click the toolbar text box button again.  Same with arrows, you click the button and it puts an arrow right in the center of the screen.  Then you have to move it and resize it to fit where it is supposed to be.
    How is this better than before?  If you want to draw one text box, you now have to do a whole extra process of placing it where it should go.  If you want to draw several separate boxes in succession, you have to click the text box button for each one rather than just draw them.  That results in extra clicks and thus less efficiency.
    It is even worse with arrows - rather than just drag from point A to point B to make your arrow (1 motion) now you have to drag the arrow point to the right spot (2 motions, one from toolbar to arrow point, and then from point to desired location) and the arrow back to the right spot (another 2 motions, one from the desired point location to the default arrow back, then drag to the desired location of your arrow's back).  That's at least 4-5 extra motions, and 3 extra clicks, PER arrow.  When efficiency matters, such as anyone using this for a job or for taking notes to a live lecture, this is going to make it that much more difficult.  To top it off, I can't think of any advantage to this method.  It doesn't look nicer, it doesn't help at all.  It was fine the way it was, and now it is quantitatively, objectively worse.  Is there any way to adjust how the markup extension works?  I'm assuming it is going to be equally as bad in Mail or anywhere else you can use the markup extension.
    Thank you for your time.
    Edit: some typos

    Preview was a much more powerful editor 2 and 3 OS ago. They continue to dumb it down and make it less practical and efficient.
    I noticed the same thing. This time it did not surprise me in the least.

  • Preview, Markup, and Cyrillic

    I think I've discovered an odd bug in Preview's new markup feature. If a PDF in Cyrillic is highlighted using Preview's markup tool and then saved, subsequently text cannot be copied properly from the document -- it shows up as symbols in the clipboard. (The original document's text can be copied without problems.) Adobe Reader puts the same junk in the clipboard too. You can copy anywhere from the text -- not just the marked up portion. I've tried this on several documents that have different fonts.
    I've had no other troubles with Cyrillic in Leopard yet, but this has stumped me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Could you please explain what you mean by a "local issue" and what you mean by a system issue? And, is there anything I can do about either situation?
    Thanks so much.
    If you create a new user in System Preferences->Accounts and the problem does not exist with that new user, then the problem is "local" meaning it's related to a specific user account (usually a corrupted .plist) but if the problem exists with the new user, then it's a problem with the OS and not a specific user.
    Most files, libraries, etc have their system counterparts and separate versions for each user.
    Most issues can be resolved by creating a new user and seeing if the issue occurs with that user.
    You can create another admin user or a user with limited ability. I would suggest creating another admin account for the purposes you are interested in. You can simply remove the account once it is determined where the problem is.

  • Unable to see markups in Outlook 2010 attachment preview

    Hi,
    I am unable to see markup tags which were done in Word 2010 in the Outlook 2010 attachment preview window. The word file normally gets marked up and sent as an attachment. Most of the time the attachment preview will highlight the markup over the words and
    when the mouse is hovered over it will show the actual comment. For a couple of my users, this has stopped working.
    When they double-click on the attachment they also cannot see the comments. However, if they save it to the local or network drive and then open the file all the markups will automatically appear.
    As a test I asked them to send me the email which had this problem to see if this happens on my Outlook and I cannot see the markups either. So I guess something must have happened with the Word file?
    Any ideas what this could be? The documents were originally composed in Word 2010 as far as I know. I have also created a test markup file and emailed this to myself and this shows the highlights fine.
    I attach a picture of when its working well.
    But with the documents that my users have this does not show.
    Any suggestions really appreciated.

    Hi,
    What if we copy all the content from the problematic Word document and paste it to a new blank document, save and attach it to an email, will you see the markup?
    Please let me know the result.

  • Removing Annotations and Markups from Preview

    The latest version of Preview has some nice features that allow you to markup and annotate pdfs. I love that. However, once to add an annotation or markup, I have not been able to find a way to remove them.
    I have been using a program called Skim (which rocks) to do this same thing. But if I can do it in preview, all the better.
    Cheers
    Joe

    I guess this is not possible . . .

  • Keyboard shortcuts to toggle "markup" in Preview

    I know about [control] + [command] + H, [control] + [command] + U, and [control] + [command] + S. And these work.
    But I find myself needing to click the markup button (toggling it on and off) multiple times per page while reading. I wish there was a keyboard shortcut for this. I tried making one in system preferences for just Preview: [control] + [command] + M. It doesn't seem to work.
    Any suggestions on how to create this shortcut?

    You can use a shortcut application like Keyboard Maestro, SimpleKeys, Shortcuts or Macro Recorder.  I use KM extensively for adding "canned" replies to posts, opening apps, etc.  It can handle the kind of task you're looking for.  However, it may be overkill for just that one task so look into the others.  Go to MacUpdate.com and search for "keyboard shortcuts" and "keyboard macros" to get other candidates.
    Currently QuickKeys is not compatible with Mavericks.  I had used it previously but like KM so much better.

  • Need to remove additional markup around components in preview/ publish

    Hi all,
    I have a quick question concerning the cq:noDecoration property on a
    component that - if set to "true" - removes the <div> markup from a
    component.
    I need this behaviour because the markup produces invalid HTML. But
    sadly when removing the wrap the component can not be selected any
    more?
    How can i create a component that has no additional markup wrapped
    around it but can still be edited/selected?
    It would be ok to have additional markup in edit mode but not in
    preview mode.
    Regards,
    Shelly

    how does the markup produce invalid HTML? i am interested to see the validator results for your specific case.
    nevertheless, the WCM Editables (hover frames for opening the edit dialog) require a block element to wrap themselves around per paragraph or component, otherwise they don't know where to attach. this is usually done with the auto-generated div. disabling the decoration effectively disables the editables.
    would it help if you could set your own HTML decoration? using a component's cq:htmlTag node (with e.g. a property cq:tagName = "myhtmlelement" [e.g. h1] and "id" or "class" to set desired style reference) you can maybe produce HTML that conforms to your needs, while at the same time serving as the required surrounding block level element for the editables.
    the ultima ratio is to manually call the CQ.WCM.edit widget function to create an editable within your component's JSP within a block level element:
    <div class="blah">
        ... my magic ....
    <script type="text/javascript">
    CQ.WCM.edit({"path":"/content/geometrixx/en/jcr:content/par/image","dialog":"/libs/foundat ion/components/image/dialog","type":"foundation/components/image","csp":"homepage|page/par |parsys/image|parbase","editConfig":{"dropTarget":[{"id":"image","name":"./fileReference", "accept":["image/.*"],"groups":["media"],"params":{"./sling:resourceType":"foundation/comp onents/image","./imageMap":"","./imageRotate":"","./imageCrop":""}}]}});
    </script>
    </div>
    replace the configuration properties of the .edit function above as needed for your component. see the widget API documentation at [0] for the .edit function.
    you can find various different samples at e.g. (or by looking at the HTML source of an author geometrixx page):

  • Preview "Markup Text" not available.

    I'm trying to highlight text in a PDF article within my Preview application (version 4.1). I have the proper permissions to do so, and I know how to do the text mark-ups. Unlike another article in which I'm able to highlight and underline text, for some reason this one won't allow me to first select any of the text in order to do the mark-ups.
    Again, I checked under "Inspector-->Encryption" and it says as clear as day that I have permission to do all of these things. What's wrong with this picture??
    Many thanks!!

  • Where is my signature from Mail/Preview Markup stored?

    I just found out about adding my signature to documents in Mail and Preview (way cool!) and was wondering where the digital file of my signature is stored.
    I was really impressed by the quality of the signature and now I'd like to use it in other places as well
    I'm using a 2013 MB Air with 10.10.1 installed.
    Anyone have any guidance?

    The usual location for iTunes media is indeed <User's Music>\iTunes\iTunes Media however you can set up iTunes so that you can add in media stored in other locations such as an external drive. Check the setting under Edit > Preferenecs > Advanced for the location of the media folder in case you changed it at some point. You can see the location of any individual file by right clicking on it and clicking Show in Windows Explorer.

  • Yosemite crippled PDF text annotation with Preview.

    In previous versions of preview, you used to be able to select 'textbox' markup tool and one-click create textboxes wherever you want on a pdf. Now, with the new Yosemite, selecting 'text' markup tool  creating a textbox in the middle of the screen, not where-ever you click. This cripples the productivity of annotating lecture slides during a lecture. I don't want my text box to always appear right in the middle of the page- I want to click to place it.
    Also, why is it vertically center justified- who, EVER, used vertically center justified text rather than vertically top justified text?
    Are there anyways around this?

    The link below provides instructions for annotating a pdf in Yosemite Preview, and additional links at the bottom of this page provide instructions for several other pdf editing capabilities:
    Select and copy text in a PDF
    Fill out and sign PDF forms
    Add, delete, or move pages in a PDF

  • Previewing/Debug in Browser

    Why is it when previewing in browser from DW, the page
    displays correctly, but from there when navigating to other pages
    using the menu, those pages "styles" are not displaying correctly?
    The menu is an include file, is that it?
    Thanks
    DM

    You are being confused by a) not understanding root relative
    vs document
    relative links, and b) not understanding how DW previews
    files.
    If I have a document with a link to an image that looks like
    this -
    <img src="/images/foo.gif"...
    That's what's called a root relative link.
    If I preview that document in DW, then the browser gets the
    document, sees
    the leading "/" and reads that as the root of the hard drive,
    since the
    browser has no idea where the root of the site is. Thus, the
    image is
    broken in the preview.
    If I have temp files enabled, then DW will secretly convert
    the file being
    previewed into a temporary file, and hand that to the
    browser. This temp
    file has had all root relative links converted to document
    relative links
    (as you will see by looking at the code in the browser), and
    has had all
    include files actually embedded in the page, and has had all
    external CSS
    and js markup embedded in the page. In other words, DW has
    made the
    document into a stand-alone page.
    If you do not have temp files enabled, all of these links
    would be broken on
    preview.
    Now - if you are using root relative links, AND you have temp
    files enabled,
    AND you click away from the previewed document, then all of
    your links will
    be broken, since DW has not made that linked file into a temp
    file. This is
    what you are seeing.
    So - if you want to click away on preview, then you must use
    document
    relative links for the site -
    <img src="../images/foo.gif"... (for example)
    These will still work on preview since the browser knows how
    to determine
    the current file's location and how to follow that path.

  • Add web link to a PDF in preview

    Hello Mac World,
    I have a MacBook Air OSX 10.9.2
    I cannot seem to find how to add a working web-link to my PDF in preview.  I have looked in  Preview <tools>,<annotate> and there is no LINK button
    Please help me to know if I need to buy a new program or if I'm just missing something here... Ps.. it's not in View either.
    Thank  you for your help,
    sunshine_415

    Open Preview, and check Help > Annotate a PDF.  It describes such things as adding a text bubble, etc.
    There is no explicit way to add a link in Preview.  Preview is, after all, primarily a viewer with a few markup tools.
    I happen to use a product called PDFPen which is available in the App Store to mark up PDFs.
    I have no financial interest in PDFPen.  I am a reasonably satisifed customer.

  • Printing PDF files from Preview without annotations

    I've annotated a bunch of PDFs in preview, but I would like to print them out without any annotations. Is this possible?
    Thanks!

    Print the originals, sans markup. Or, if you didn't save them with a different name, remove the annotations from a copy, and then print.

  • How do I change the text size in a PDF fillable form in Preview?

    I'm trying to fill out a PDF form I downloaded from my bank and would like to use Preview to fill out the form. No problem typing in each field until I got to where it asks for my e-mail address. My e-mail is too long for the form's provided area and I'd like to reduce the text I'm inputting into that field so it can fit. Before I do it with PhotoShop or just and inkpen, does anyone know of a way to selectivly reduce the font size of the text for a too-tiny-field? I've tried to open the fonts menu but it does not seem related to the fillable text field.

    Whilst in the Preview application, press "Shift - Command - A" (⇧⌘A) simultaneously to show the markup toolbar, or click View, and select "show markup toolbar". There is an icon "A" near the right hand side of the now visible markup toolbar, click this icon to reveal all the font options.

  • ListView jiggles horizontally when large item about to scroll in or out in Windows Phone 8.1 Preview

    If you have a ListView (in a Windows Phone 8.1 Store app, running on the developer preview 8.10.123979.895) in which you do not explicitly constrain the size of your list view's item template (e.g., because you'd like it to resize automatically when
    the screen is rotated, or to adapt well to larger screen sizes), a problem arises if some of the items in your list want to be wider than the screen. They are correctly cropped, but as you scroll down through the list, the whole list jiggles left and right
    as the long item is about to scroll into view, or shortly after it has scrolled out of view.
    The built-in Calendar app suffers from this problem, by the way, so even if it's possible to avoid this in my own app, the Calendar app needs fixing... If you create a large number of appointments on a single day, where most of the appointments have short
    names, but one has a long name, and you then tap the day to expand its list of appointments for that day, you'll see this jiggling from left to right as you scroll through the appointments.
    Here's some code that reproduces the problem:
    XAML:
    <Page
    x:Class="Wp81ScrollBug.MainPage"
    xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
    xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
    xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
    xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
    mc:Ignorable="d"
    Background="{ThemeResource ApplicationPageBackgroundThemeBrush}">
    <Grid>
    <ListView
    x:Name="myList">
    </ListView>
    </Grid>
    </Page>
    Codehind for that:
    using System.Linq;
    using Windows.UI.Xaml.Controls;
    using Windows.UI.Xaml.Navigation;
    namespace Wp81ScrollBug
    public sealed partial class MainPage : Page
    private string[] _source =
    Enumerable.Range(1, 80).Select(i => "Short " + i)
    .Concat(new[] { "This item is much longer than the rest and causes problems as virtualization adds and removes it" })
    .Concat(Enumerable.Range(81, 80).Select(i => "Short " + i)).ToArray();
    public MainPage()
    InitializeComponent();
    NavigationCacheMode = NavigationCacheMode.Required;
    myList.ItemsSource = _source;
    protected override void OnNavigatedTo(NavigationEventArgs e)
    You can get rid of the problem by adding this inside the ListView:
    <ListView.ItemTemplate>
    <DataTemplate>
    <ContentControl Width="480" Content="{Binding}" />
    </DataTemplate>
    </ListView.ItemTemplate>
    but this is unsatisfactory, because it no longer handles orientation changes or different screen sizes - when you rotate the screen, the long item doesn't get to use the whole width.

    The Jiggle is due to virtualization and an attempt to fit the contents.  The only solution I can think of is to set the width based on the orientation.
