Preview 4.2 search bug?

I used to be able to easily search a parts catalogue using older versions of Preview. Now when I put same number in to Preview 4.2 the matching string does not show up even though it's in there - instead I have to scroll through endless search results matching only first groupo of numbers in the whole string, rendering the search unusable.
Have searched and googled but can find no reference to this.
Have only experienced since upgrading to Leoprad, the older version of preview (3.0.7 I thin) running on my Tiger machine works fine and homes in instantly on matching string.
Anyone have a fix please?
Thanks

About the best(?) I could find in Leopard 10.5.8 Preview application, was a way of
"assigning keywords to an image or pdf document" to help in later finding them(?)
In the open Preview application, there is a Help menu bar, within it, is Preview Help.
While there are several things Preview can do, the kind of search it used to do in
Tiger is not among them in the rendition of Preview given us in Leopard.
Seems to me, using EasyFind may be faster;
depending on what you're looking to find.
One or more of the comments about this freeware app said they found Search in
Preview lacking after they upgraded to Leopard, compared to Tiger's Preview. And
Find, within Preview is also somewhat limited.
Not sure if one could call the omission or change of a feature, a 'bug'; however since
Leopard 10.5(.8) is well past the development stage, fixes to this kind of problem are
unlikely to occur. You could try to Contact Apple (in web site) and suggest a bug-fix.
Apparently this has been a known issue, for those who sought to keep using it thus.
Since I hadn't been using the Preview's built-in search, in either OS X, it's my loss.
There probably are other user forum questions about this matter elsewhere online.
However involved the idea to 'assign keyboards to images and PDF documents' may
be, the Preview Help suggestion has a few words to say about. + I'm not impressed.
Sorry to not have a definitive answer or a fix to this issue.
Good luck & happy computing!

  • Search bug with dutch language.

    Yesterday, I ran into a basic search bug.
    I create a dutch content area, and place a text item on it. When I search for the title of this item zero results are found.
    When I place an item on an english CA (voorbeeldinhoudsgebied=sample content area), the search works fine.
    I've logged a TAR and bug 1679678 is created.
    Does anybody know a workaround for this problem?
    I've done no testing on other languages.
    Regards,
    Ton

    Any help finding a "patch" for Finder?
    Try reinstalling the Portuguese language files by running the Language Translations installers found in the OptionalInstalls.mpkg of the Leopard DVD.

    Try to do a hard reboot (no data is lost) by holding down the home and power buttons at the same time untilyou see the Apple logo. Then, let go of both buttons. If that doesn't work, try restoring your iPod and do NOT restore from a backup. This will erase your data, but you can sync back everything except app data and settings from iTunes.

  • Preview Searching Bug

    Anyone else noticed that Preview search is broken?
    I just loaded a PDF file and searched for a friend's name (it's an old computer club newsletter). It found the instances of his name, and hitting command-g would cycle through them.
    I then searched for another term and Previous found the first occurrence.
    However, when I hit command-g to cycle through them, it went back to finding instances of the first search instead of what I was currently looking for, while displaying the new term in the search entry.
    In fact, I was not able to get Preview to search for other words in that document without closing it and opening the file again.
    Seems to happen on other files as well.
    I'm going to file a bug report, but I'm curious if anyone else has noticed this.

    Same sort of weirdness -- not sure if its the same bug -- here.
    Yes, the Preview search capabilities certainly look busted in 10.5.1.
    When this crops up, the only way I can search through all the hits shown is by selecting each individually with the pointer. And they don't highlight in the sidebar. With the sidebar selected, I can't successfully select the next match in the sidebar. It loops within the section, and nothing shown in the main window gets highlighted in the sidebar. (This is severely weird search navigation, yes.)
    If I quit Preview and relaunch when I get stuck in this particular morass, it appears to clear the problem. At least, I just tried that and it seemed to clear it.
    Also when this case cropped up, I noticed these over in the console window:
    12/21/07 11:33:58 AM Preview{880} NSMapInsert: map table argument is NULL
    Is there a bug number I can reference when I log this? I'm not sure if I'm seeing the same bug, or a cousin here, since I'm currently using the same search string for several searches.

  • Email search bug

    I have discovered what I believe is a recent bug in Mail - I am using version 6.6 under OSx 10.8.5
    I have my mail preview displayed in sort by date order. It threads the topics for me very nicely and on the indented threads it shows the name of the SENDER which is exactly what I would expect.
    If I then do a search for an email of a word that appears in the email I get a similar view expect that the name displayed is the name of the ADRESSEE not the sender. This is really bizarre and not useful. Most email in my inbox is sent to me so this doesn't tell me anything. When searching I want to know who the email was sent FROM.
    I can only assume that this is a bug and I would be grateful if Apple would fix it.

    Thanks Tony - I hand't realised you can do this so I have filed a bug report as suggested.
    The problem has been driving me mad as at first I hadn't realised why I could not find an email that I knew I had received. It seems a silly bug!

  • Finder search bug? No results if 'Search' field is blank.

    I can't determine if this is a bug or is simply a change in Finder search behavior (for the worse, IMO) in 10.8.
    In the Finder, when I select 'File>>Find' (or hit ⌘-F) and then select the current folder from the top of the search parameters, no files appear in the search results if the 'Search' (for filename) field at the top of the window is blank even though the only other search parameter is 'Kind is Any'.
    If I enter text in the 'Search' field, matching results start to appear.
    In 10.7, I saw different behavior. In the absence of text in the Search field, the Finder would simply return results matching the other parameters and ignore the Search field.
    With the new behavior, there doesn't seem to be any way to construct a saved search based solely on other parameters (kind, date, file label, etc) without specifying some filename parameter as well. Of course, I can work around the problem by using something like 'NOT xxx!@#$%' in the Search field, but this approach is klugy at best.
    Anyone else see this? Bug? Deliberate change in Finder behavior?

    Yes the report ESH_TEST_SEARCH returns no material.
    So should I suspend the indexing and reschedule with with real time indexing ? I am not sure whether we choose real time indexing in the first time.
    What about the authorizations, I see USER_AUTHORITY object is activealready.
    Thanks

  • Why is Preview unable to search some pdfs that Adobe Reader has no problem searching?

    In the last couple months, I've noticed that Preview is unable to search some (but not all) pdfs. These are clearly digitized journal articles, recently published. Since this didn't make sense to me, I opened the documents with Adobe Reader and found they were searchable using Adobe.
    What is going on? I'd prefer to use Preview, since I'd always preferred its search function and like its annotation tools (specifically, the box outline tool I use to identify chunks of text). Should I just give up on Preview and switch to Adobe?

    I can search that document in both Safari and Preview.
    Back up all data.
    In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
    If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Annotating pdf documents in Preview - the text search feature doesn't work?

    Hi everyone,
    I'd like to annotate my pdf documents using preview. However, I realized the other day that as soon as I start annotating a document (with notes, shapes, highlighting, etc), the preview text search doesn't work anymore.
    Thanks for any help or advice!

    This is a known problem. I have seen one suggestion to print the annotated PDF as a new PDF in order to get search capability back. You can try the Apple Discussions "search" feature at the upper right corner to look for more suggestions.

  • Search Bug in iTunes 5.0

    Hi there,
    I've run into a very simple bug regarding the search function of the iTunes 5.0 Library, where the new filters don't work as expected. Here's an example:
    While viewing Library, type into the search box a couple of letters e.g. "kr". For me, the list shows all 33 items with "kr" in "All" (any) fields. The search bar is also displayed with "All" and "All" highlighted. So far so good. Now, I click on the "Name" filter. This narrows down the list to 3 items that contain "kr" in the Name field of the song. This is also fine. To summarise, "kr" in "All" fields = 33 items, "kr" in "Name" = 3 items.
    Now, I clear the search by clicking on the "x" button of the search field, and the Library shows all items again. Fine.
    The problem occurs on the second or subsequent searches. In the search field, I type in "kr" again. The search bar shows "All" is active again, but there are only 3 items displayed, when there should be 33. These are actually the 3 items from a "Name" filtered search. The problem is that the search filter from the previous search stays in effect, but the search bar reverts to displaying the "All" button. Clicking the "All" button does not reinstate the "All" view - only clicking some other filter and then "All" again will actually reinstate the "All" view. The search query you type doesn't matter either. Type in anything the second time and it will still be filtered on "Name".
    Anybody else seeing this bug?
    I would let Apple know about this except that for some reason Apple equates "Provide iTunes Feedback" in the iTunes menu with "Request Music" on their web site ( http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunes.html ), which is both absurd and useless.

    Bryan, a little off topic, but here is a suggestion.
    Thanks. I had all that, but someone high and mighty at Apple took away my ability to change my preferences.
    A while back, when I got to be a level 3 and change my logo, I had an apple. I received an e-mail that I should change it, and I did.
    Then in my computer area, I had my iTunes library info (songs, days, gigs).
    Anyway, they said I continued to ignore their rules, and now I don't have preferences privledges. I've posted in the mod forum, and did get one response, but when I tried to explain myself that I indeed didn't do anything wrong, I never received a response.
    At the time of my "demotion", my logo was the FireWire logo, my location was my City,State, and my computer info was my iTunes library info. If they didn't want me to use any of this, a simple message would have been all that would have been needed for me to change any of the above.
    I understand these things happen, but don't appreciate any response after leaving several messages stating my side of the story.

  • XPath Search Bug

    JDeveloper version is 11g Production.
    The View>XPath Search feature has a bug.
    XPath Search does not support an XML document with a default namespace. For example if an XML document has the default namespace declaration
    xmlns="http://www.xdk11g/xpath" the XPath Search does not have a provision to add a namespace URI without a Prefix with the Add button.

    Correction. Please use the following test case.
    1. Create an application and a project in JDeveloepr 11g.
    2. Add an XML document. catalog.xml, from the New Gallery.
    What doesn't generate an error.
    3. Copy the following XML documen to catalog.xml.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <catalog xmlns:journal="http://www.xdk11g.com/xpath">

    <author>Tom Kyte</author>
    </article>
    </journal>
    </catalog>
    4. Select Search>XPath Search.
    5. Add a namespace mapping with Add button.
    Prefix: journal
    URI: http://www.xdk11g.com/xpath
    6. Specify an XPath expression in Expression field.
    /catalog/journal:journal
    7. Click on OK. The jounal:journal node gets selected.
    What generates an error (the bug).
    8. Copy the following XML document to catalog.xml.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <catalog xmlns="http://www.xdk11g.com/xpath/defaultNamespace">

    9. Add a namespace mapping with Add button for the default namespace. Specify prefix as empty.
    Prefix:
    URI: http://www.xdk11g.com/xpath/defaultNamespace

  • Search Bug in Mountain Lion Mail

    After having Mail open for a few hours, when I search for something all of the results in the left colum, which shows the sender, display my name only.  I've tested this by searching by the persons name for the most recent item in my inbox, and my name still shows up regardless.  If I quit and reopen mail this issue resolves itself, but as mentioned, only for a few hours.  Anyone else notice this bug?  I've tried to change the settings in Pref, but to no avail.

    I have the same problem in 10.8. I have an email account (.domain) that forwards to my .mac account. In 10.7, with "Send new messages from account of selected mailbox" an email to .domain that was forwarded to my .mac account could be replied to with the sender being .domain. Now in 10.8, the same situation puts the sender as the .mac account. Something has clearly changed. Very annoying.
    By the way, in both cases, I have one inbox with 4 accounts in it. But with 10.7 the email address it was sent to (even if it was forwarded) was used as the sender. Now it is always the account it was received in.
    Not sure which one was a feature and which one is a bug.
    Any thoughts on a work around (other than not forwarding) would be great.

  • No preview, thumbnails, or search in Windows Explorer 64 bit Vista

    No preview in Windows Explorer for 64-bit Vista... is this supposed to be fixed in 8.1.2? Also, can't perform Windows Searches against the contents of PDF files, and the majority of PDF thumbnails are not showing up in Explorer. Not interested in using Tim Heuer/Foxit because it crashes frequently and doesn't deal with searches or thumbnails.
    I assume all these problems are related to 64-bit--when can we expect a fix?

    There is no fix - the pdfshell driver doesn't support x64 Windows.

  • Preview 4.0 Selection Bug!

    Hi,
    Try this. Open an image up in Preview 4.0. Zoom into it a lot. Make a selection, then try using the Move tool to move around the image. Your selection disappears! See?
    From what I understand, you can't use the Move tool while you have a Selection made. This makes it awkward to move across an image in the middle of making a selection. So basically you're forced to use the scroll bars if you're zoomed into an image while making a selection.
    Is this a bug, or just bad design? Imagine if Photoshop didn't let you use the Move tool while having a Selection.

    Everybody, report preview problems to apple at:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    My biggest problem in preview 4.0 is it freezes while trying to view large images across four apple LCD's. Sometimes I see a gray screen.

  • Safari-- Numbers Search Bug

    Switching back and forth between Safari and Numbers I noticed that occasionally if there was something I had recently searched for in the Safari search box, the first word of that search would appear in the find/replace search box in Numbers. Is there any way to prevent this from happening?

    This question was already asked and responded during the last eight days.
    Why are you calling the described behavior a bug?
    The search tool isn't the property of a given application, it's a system tool.
    Some developers inserted a piece of code using their own "old_search" in the dialog, other doesn't and rely upon the default structure. Just a matter of design choice.
    When I search something in the AppleScript editor, I retrieve it in iWork applications as well as in Safari, Mail, TextEdit, iText Express ….
