Preview 6.0: NO hand tool?
Hello. Hand tool disappeared in Preview 6.0!? This is extremely frustrating! I used to scroll through multipage PDF documents with my Wacom pen. But now I can't!
You will find all necessary info here.
All you actually need is the Lion's preveiw with modified Info.plist file. Grab it here. Just copy it to your HD and voila!
Also you may want to make it by your own:
From the Forum:
The Lion Preview.app seems to be blacklistet in ML through the "Bundle version=719.25" entry in the Info.plist. So I changed it to something higher (760 in this case - 765 is the version-number from ML Preview.app). Now the app fails to start, because modifying the plist-file apparently broke the signing.
Then I resigned it using this command:
Code:
codesign --force --sign - Preview.app/Contents/MacOS/Preview

Where is the hand tool in the preview application ?
I would really really really love to have the hand tool in the preview application, its the one thing that stops me from using it instead of adobe acrobat reader,
yet its a beautiful application, but I really like using the hand tool to move around a document page when reading. the magnifier is too wobbly and jumpy,it does, but I prefer the mouse, its faster when i`m working between documents and graphics applications.
scrolling in and out quickly with option and scroll wheel and spacebar/mouse to zip from point to point, then cmmd/tab to my graphics apps and so forth,
two finger method is nice for a leasurely read but I dont have that time anyday of the week. -
Hand tool in preview (in mountain lion)?
I'm missing the hand tool in preview. Is it completely gone or is there any chance to get it back?
I use a Wacom tablet with Maverick, and not sure if this will help you all but you may find a similar fix.
I solved the hand tool / panning issue by going to the System Preferences. On my Wacom prefs, there is an area called "Application". There you must click the " + " button to add the Preview app. After the Preview icon is visible, select it, and then choose "pan/scroll" or similar modifier for one of your pen/mouse buttons.
My Wacom Tablet button for panning with this setting does not work unless I also hold down the "option" button. So it's new programed button + option.
This is all so specific. -
Preview loses "hand" tool??
I am a desktop mac pro user. I tried to "scoot" a Preview document page around, couldn't find that tool. A friend tells me that Apple has gotten rid of this function because people are now supposed to have swipe-supporting computers.
The Mac Pro doesnt' support swiping unless you buy another hundred bucks worth of hardware.
Are we desktop mac pro users being frozen out of a good Mac experience unless we fork over more dough for more hardware?
or is there a way to regain that "hand" tool functionality?
thank you for any help!

Using the rotate tool and hand tool at the same time in CS6
When using the rotate tool, you used to be able to use the hand tool even when the Rotate dialogue box was up. Is there a way to get that back?
I make Mandalas (http://www.behance.net/gallery/Mandala/2700497) and work from the center out. This poster is 18"x24" so once I start to get to the outer edge, I'm zoomed into the center at 6400% so I can get my crosshairs as precise as I can, then enter a number (45 degrees, 20 degrees, etc.). Clicking Preview helps, but if you're zoomed in and the object is out of view, you have to guess where it's going. In CS5, you could press down the space bar and use the Hand Tool even while the dialog box was up. Is there a fix for this? (Sorry if this doesn't make sense...it's kind of hard to explain over a forum.)TBamber wrote:

CS5 on Windows 7.
I can use the hand tool while pressing the Space bar while another tool including the Rotate tool is current. But I can not use the Hand tool in anyway if I'm in the process of using the Rotate tool by holding down the mouse button or dragging with it.
While the Rotate dialog is displayed I can not do anything outside of it in any way.
I can use the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll the view up or down vertically while using any of the tools including the Rotate tool but not when a tool dialog is open.
I'm curious if others experience different behavior on a Windows system . -
I was working on 2 different illustrator documents and combined them into one, stepped away for a while and came back to not being able to remove the hand tool no matter what tool I click on.
I noticed in the title bar that in parens it reads (cmyk/preview/us web coated (SWOP) v2). I am assuming the preview means that I am some kind of preview mode, however I don't know how I got there, nor can I get out. Can someone help?
ThanksUpdate: Just figured it out! At some point, I've enabled the Marquee tool on the left click side. It should have been the 'pointer' setting. My bad!

Momentary Hand Tool Not Working
I can select the hand tool from the tool bar or pressing H and can pan around the preview window. But I cannot get the momentary hand tool to work on this new laptop. With the Selection Tool activated, when I press the Space Bar, I get the hand icon, but pressing the left mouse key and dragging does nothing. It is driving me crazy.
THANK YOU JAMES!
I have been dealing with this issue for months!
Having to go and grab the hand tool from the box was a major pain in the @$$!
I thought is was a windows 7 issue.
I did what you said , and the hand tool is working again! woo hoo! -
How do I drag an image around in the view, once it's magnified larger than the viewing area? I can imagine a simple "hand" tool like in Adobe PDF Reader doing this, but it's oddly missing in this application, quite a shame.
@Csound1 how is my mac relevant? I'm talking about software not hardware.
@Kurt Lang sorry, I composed the message when looking at "Preview" application help on this site, the fact that it missed the context here, is another issue I have with Apple's "famous" UI/UX design...
So for the record, I'm talking about the "Preview" app that comes bundles with Max OSX. -
how do i change the default hand tool to the select tool when i open a document.
how do i change the view from 2 pages to a single page?Try setting the check boxes in Edit>Preferences>General for the following:
- Make Hand tool select text & images
- Make Hand tool read articles
- Make Hand tool use mouse-wheel zooming
Adjust these as needed but does it make any difference? -
Path/Shape tool and Hand tool are awful in CS6.
We recently upgraded to CC at work and I do love the idea. Hypothetically, what could be better? Sadly, CC comes with CS6 which doesn't shine so well. Photoshop in particularl is hindering me and slowing down my productivity. Therefore I am sharing my thoughts and hoping something will get done.
Paths/Shapes in CS6 are absolute trash. As an illustrator, I use these tools frequently on a daily basis. It used to be rapid and easy. Now, when I undo more than one stage I have to reselect the path, so that's +1 click per mistake.
I used to love the expanded pathfinder view, of the shapes/pen tool. Now it's contained in a drop-down which feels very dumbed-down and is +1 click EVERY time I need to use something in there. REALLY AWKWARD and a complete pain to use. Especially if I select the wrong draw mode. Why is there not even the option to use the old expanded view, or a PATHFINDER PANEL added to Photoshop for 'traditional' users/illustrators?
Seeing as that hasn't changed for as long as I can remember... I imagine that it is annoying a lot of people. I don't know how you thought it would be good to change that outright without even phasing it out gradually or offering the original view as well. Terrible. Don't even dare tell me to draw my paths in illustrator. Worse still, the infinitely useless marquee tool keeps the original expanded view! So it's not even like it couldn't have been done. Just. Annoying.
Also the Hand tool is a right pain. Are you seriously telling me I can't scrub freely? Outside of the 'frame'?? That's retarded. Even if an imported layer is larger than my document bounds and the 'frame' I still can't even scrub outside of it?
I've been a loyal user of photoshop for over 10 years and this is the worst update I've seen in all that time. There are great things happening, with the content aware stuff and better GL processing etc etc. Sadly, tried and tested features are being wiped out as you try and turn photoshop into one giant DESIGN button.
Sorry for the massive rant. I had real high hopes for CS6 and to be honest, I'm moderately disappointed.
I couldn't figure out where on earth to post this as I couldn't find a feedback button in photoshop. Which may also be a great idea to consider.Apologies for the triple post but this is still frustrating me.
I don't understand why Adobe would do something that slows down long-term Photoshop users so much!
When I am on the path selection tool, the little check mark to deselect all paths is gone. Why? It was one tiny button that didn't even add clutter and was impecably useful.
Now, if I'm trying to add to my path or subtract from a path, the minute I switch my pen to this mode, the whole shape layer abides by that rule. So my existing path is inverted if I select subtract, etc.
Why does the pen tool now control paths in the same way as the path selection tool? I thought that was the ENTIRE POINT of the path selection tool. For selecting and modifying a paths properties. Any modifiers applied to the pen should be strictly for once you draw with the pen? Again. More clicks, more undos and more workarounds to figure out. All of which seem much slower and more convoluted than every previous version of the CS.
Also, where have the transform controls gone from the path selection tool? Once again, another click. Right click > free transform. Who thought that would be smart? Works for some but not me for a second.
These bulky, childish cursors are annoying some of my colleagues too. Even precise cursors are now massive. Where have sleek, 1px thick cursors gone? Why have we got these chunky horible things that look like they're from the Sims or something?? I'm not playing a videogame. I'm working. I feel like a school child with these hilariously over-sized pointers.
It's not even like a fix for these issues is needed. Simply revert back to the method which was practical and useful? With some of the new additions like the rubber band and illustrator style-stroke... All great stuff, if applied to the *real* path tool. Not this lame excuse of one. Why did you got screwing with what WAS one of the most versatile tools in photoshop? I can only hope this is the first stage of a major upgrade in this tool. -
To clarify, hand tool is a function for user click on the pdf and dragging around , that is used to replace the scroll bar navigating .
The problem is, by default the Chrome and firefox pdf viewer do not have that function and I would like allow the user to drag the page.
A workaround is to use a jquery plugin (grab to pan https://github.com/Rob--W/grab-to-pan.js in my case) with an embed object (pdf viewer). When I maximum the size of the pdf and user drag the embed object.
The problem I have encounter is
1) When using chrome/ firefox, the pdf content do not fit to the page but auto resize by default even I have set the adobe pdf open parameter , using iframe.
2) The jquery seems conflict with the firefox pdf viewer, it works smoothly on Chrome but not firefox.
Here is the source code, you may download the plugin from the link mention above and have a look. Don't forget to put a '1.pdf' along with the source file. Thanks

PhotoShop Elements 5.0 Cursor locks to Hand tool
I use Photoshop Elements 5.0, and sometimes, my cursor will lock to the hand tool and I can't use any other tools. I will exit the program and open it back up, and it will still be locked on the hand tool, but later, it will randomly start working again and let me use the other tools. How can I fix this?
I'd start by checking the space bar on the keyboard. It might be sticking. When (if) you get stuck in the hand tool, try tapping your space bar.
Reason: The space bar is the shortcut that calls up the hand tool. -
Photoshop CS6 Stuck on Hand Tool in ACR & PS with Mac/ Mountain Lion
Photoshop CS6 gets stuck in "hand mode" after being open for a few hours. Suddenly, I can't use liquefy because Photoshop gets stuck in hand mode. I can't use ACR to the full potential because I can't use the adjustment brush because all I have is the hand tool. I try to open files, but all I get is the hand tool!
I know it's not an issue of pressing the space bar, I have tried that. I have closed all the Adobe programs (Bridge, Lightroom, Photoshop), then re-opened Photoshop and it does not go away.
It only goes away after re-starting the computer, but that is not acceptable.
I am on a 17" Macbook Pro, Mountain Lion 10.8.1, using CS6 products.
Can this please be fixed?Maybe a corrupt PS cache. Can you try clearing & re-creating your preferences? Follow instructions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-functions-names-locations.html

Spacebar shortcut for hand tool not working in Photoshop CC - have tried closing all other programs
The spacebar shortcut for hand tool is not working in Photoshop CC - as suggested in this form & others I have tried closing all other programs with no result. I have also reset photoshop to default settings & this did not make any difference either.
There may be a software conflict. I went through this today. When I did a search in Adobe foruns actually found tha answer on the Illustrator forum: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1027227?
What the problem for me was an app called - 1Password. I had opened it, but not given my password to login and it was on in the background. As soon as I quit 1Password, the spacebar Hand Tool worked.
Then I opened 1Password again, and logged in. This time the spacebar works.
Others mentioned conflict with Spotify. And Chrome too. Couple other things. Read that thread in the link above.
Good luck! -

Alot of times PS shortcut's stop working and eventually PS crashes.
I have an 27 imac 3.33 GHZ Core Duo/8GB DDR3/256MB ATI Radeon HD 4670
