Preview (7.0.826.4) freezing in OSX 10.9.3

Dear Apple Experts
About a week ago my preview program has not been working properly.  Whenever i try and put text into my pdf documents the preview program shows the ‘spinning wheel of death’ at the point of saving…(sorry i don’t know what else to call that multicoloured candy-looking spinning thing)   It’s really weird…  It does not freeze up with ALL pdf…just some of them.  I was thinking about deleting preview and then reinstalling it..but my mac system does not allow me.
One perhaps important thing is:  when i edit the ‘stubborn’ pdf files, and then press ‘save’ nothing happens.  I have to press save twice…then the program becomes inactive.
Does anyone have any ideas?  I use this program for work and am really frustrated :(!!

I have now updated my signature and look forward to any suggestions for how Preview can be fixed!

  • I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.

I own a late 2009 Macbook Pro, and it keeps freezing after OSX Lion installation.  I will post my computer's 'specs' below.  I installed Lion, from Snow Leopard, through the App store.  The first week, it worked like a dream, and was loving my brand new computer, or so it seemed.  I then began to run into problems, and I can't confirm this 100%, but I believe it was after I updated from 10.7.1, to 10.7.2.
The freezes are sporatic at best, and cannot be narrowed down to one app.  I googled the issue about two weeks ago, and found a fix involving a temporary log-in, verifying the disk, restarting the computer holding CMD+R, and repairing the disk from there.  That fixed the problem.  For about three or four days.  From there I brought my laptop to Best Buy, where I purchased the computer (start the groans, my dad wanted the accidental damage, and he was paying, there was no argument).  My warranty there was still good, but all they were offering was to check my hard-drive, and possibly ship it out.  That would not be good for me, as I am a High School student, who works online.
So I then decided to go to the Apple store, see what they said.  They said a bunch of people had this problem, it would cost a lot to fix, as I would need a new Logic Board.  This did not make any sense to me, as I knew it was Lion's fault, so why would they not make the L-2009MBP Logic Board compatible, and why are only a few people having this problem, well a lot more than a few, but I mean not everyone.
So I asked a friend about it, and we decided to run a back up, and erase the computer, and re-install Lion.  Figuring maybe my data was corrupted during install.  This helped for a day or two, and happened again.  So this time, we backed up only files (music, pics, documents, etc.,) and did a fresh install.  I got my computer back last night.  Now, I am not saying that didn't help.  Previously I would have frozen about 18 times well writing this, but I have not frozen once (hopefully I didn't just jinx myself).  I have gone from about one freeze every 10-15 minutes (sometimes worse), to about one every 1-3 hours.  Which, let's be honest is still a lot.
So, before I just decide to go and revert to Snow Leopard on my merry way, I ask, do any of you have any other ideas?  Or guarenteed fixes?  I know a guarentee is a hard thing to ask for, but I am desperate, my teachers are getting angry with me for not sending work, and I know this would help a lot of people.  Thank you to those who read through my whole spiel, and thank you to those who will help me!
[Ps, while I am somewhat of a noob, I know my way around a computer, so any help, or knowledge you could bestow upon me is awesome.  Especially DIY fixes.  (if your only advice is, don't buy a mac at Best Buy, don't bother commenting)]

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.

  • Screen freezing imac osx 10.8.2

Still having problems with screen freezing using osx 10.8.2.
Bought machine only 4 months ago and has been returned for repair to apple. Replaced graphics and power supply and still have the same problem. It has to be drivers for the AMD Radeon 512mb card....
Any news or update. Thank you

Tried a posters advice to run ONYX and tick all boxes under Automation. System seems to be stable so far.. will update in a few days if stability has returned. Time for Apple to realise they have a PR nightmare on their hands and fix this ridiculous problem.
In 30 years of using MS I never had the screen freeze so why would the "Most advanced desktop on the planet" suddenly be doing it.

  • Preview And Mail Apps Keeps Freezing Up in Yosemite

I've posted before regarding the numerous performance issues that I have since upgrading to Yosemite on my MacBook Pro.  I have contacted Apple Support and have even gone to the Genius Bar, but any fixes are always short-lived.
Here's what is happening:  When I launch Preview to open something (e.g., a photo), the app freezes up. I also notice that if I go to the Apple Mail app, there is a keystroke lag when I type.   Also, the battery drains down much faster...
Running the Disk Utility/rebooting will fix the problem for a day or so, until it rears its ugly head again...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Here is the EtreCheck Report:

Back up all data before proceeding.
    1. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
              Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder may open, or you may get an error message that the item can't be found. Either result is normal. If the folder does open and has contents, move the contents to the Desktop. Relaunch Mail and test. If there's no change, put the contents of the folder back and quit Mail again.
    2. Repeat with this line:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles
This time you may be prompted for your administrator login password when you remove the items. Make sure they're removed from the folder and not just copied to the Desktop. If necessary, copy them first and then move the originals to the Trash.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Why does my Western Digital drive freeze my OSX

    Hey all!
    I'm in a bad spot.
Yesterday I was going through files on my 6TB western digital my book hard drive connected to my old iMac running snow leopard. I had been playing many different movie files from my camera in quick time player to categorize them during a couple of days and everything had been fine. But all of a sudden quick time froze and wouldn't answer so I had to force quit it and then I tried again, then the same thing happened and then Finder and everything froze and I had to force shut off the computer by holding down the power button. Then the same thing happened after I restarted the computer. After each time I have to force off the computer the WD hard drive still has its light on and keep sounding like it's working hard and I have to pull the power plug from it to make it stop.
Then I started it again to try to just copy files from it but the drive would freeze OSX again. So I connected it to my old macbook pro and the same thing happened but then I tried to connect it with usb instead of fire wire and it seemed to act normal. Then I replaced the firewire and tested and it seemed to work fine on both computers. So I assumed it was the firewire cable that was causing problems. Since I was a bit shaken I started to do backups of everything from the hard drive and copied a folder of 323 GB during the night. In the morning it had copied everything but 10 GB and had frozen again. So again I connected both to the Macbook Pro and copied over what was missing. Then I tried to copy another folder but it froze again.
It behaves very irrational in my eyes and I wonder what is wrong and what to do?
When I start the computer without that drive, it acts normally and the same goes for when I connect another external hard drive.
Did a control with disk utility on both the internal and the external drives, and it said they are fine.
I didn't notice that the hard drive was standing in the sun which was shining through the window behind my iMac and the room was quite warm. Can that be what started all this?
Also I noticed that the folder that I did a backup of, shows different content size on the Macbook pro and on the iMac. And this goes for both the original folder and the backup on the other external drive. Finder says both folders are 301 GB on the Macbook and 323 on the iMac. This freaks me out since this is a very important folder and I can't loose 22 GB. Anyone who knows why this can be?
I would be extremely grateful for any thoughts on this!
    Thanks

When data rescue (data recovery software) makes a clone of the problem disk, does it use the disk in another way than when it does normal data recovery? When I try to do data recovery it freezes after maybe 20 minutes just as when I just copy files in Finder, is it different when making a clone?
I don't know how Data Rescue works (it's proprietary software).
It does sound like your disk could be physically damaged (you still need to try an external case) - if you continue to try to repair you may lose even more data until the disk is totally unreadable. Imagine a spec of dust scratching across your data - the act of trying to read & re-read can cause more damage. As more pieces of disk get scratched off the platters the entire inside of the mechanism gets covered in dust, resulting in more scratches, more data loss…
Seriously, the best option you have is to take it to data recovery professionals for them to look at it. They may be able to open it & replace failed parts or take a copy with a limited amount of corrupted files. Some indications may be the sound the disk makes when it 'freezes' - but that is only a guide for professional ears.
Recovery software can try to re-read data when disks encounter errors. Some smart recovery software will force the disk to avoid retrying these - that skips over the damage - the files in the damaged area will be unusable but the surrounding data may still be recoverable. Professionals may take one copy & avoid using the disk until they have diagnosed how it failed - limiting the potential for more damage.
ddrescue is one command line tool that will clone without retrying to re-read, but that is complex to use.
    http://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/ddrescue.html
Here are examples from an old disk that ground up itself…
    http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=107678
Your issue probably is not be the same as that example, I'm not trying to scare you but you should consider how important this data is, repeated recovery attempts can make that impossible even for professionals.

  • Bridge CS6 freezing on OSX 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)

I am entering this because it is solved and may help others...

    OSX 10.8.2
    Adobe SW
    PS CS6, Bridge CS6
Recurring and repeatable problem where Bridge would send OSX into the "spinning  wheel" and lockup the entire system. The only way out was to force a hard reset via button and reboot. It appeared as though the problem occured when I tried to create a new folder so I concluded that it might be a problem with the interaction with Bridge and the underlying File System. Tried: 1) upgrading to latest version of Bridge 2) upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion. Problem persisted.
After numerous attempts, I discovered that the problem was only repeatable in a certain directory. The directory was from a photoshoot with a mixture of RAW and JPEG shots from a Nikon D7000 so the RAW files were .NEF format. I wondered if there was a problem with the .NEF files since I had just started using RAW. The camera produces both .NEF and .JPG and both get dumped in Bridge. Important: Even though I was able to see other directories with the same mix of files, Bridge kept complaining that there was an problem in the "cache" and that I needed to go to Properties->Cache->Purge Cache to "Purge all Thumbnails and Previews" -- which I did, but the problem persisted with this singular directory.
Next, I went to Finder to see if the folder/directory was readable there. Since there seemed to be a problem with the "Thumbnails and Previews" I put Finder in "columns" mode so it was forced to create a preview. I figured if there was a problem creating previews or thumbnails, a lower level render via Finder would be a good test. I went through all 200 files in the directory to see that the previews were created easily. Each preview popped up in under 1 sec. BUT, then I encountered a RAW .NEF file that took over a minute to render and finally showed up as a thumbnail instead of a preview.  I concluded that the .NEF file was corrupt and deleted it AND the corresponding .JPG and the problem was solved. Bridge was able to browse (create thumbnail and previews in cache).
Note to Adobe Devs: Bridge needs to have much better recovery from situtations like this. There was clearly NO TIMEOUT on Bridge's efforts to render thumbnails and previews on the corrupted RAW file. Bridge should timeout and present a meaningful error.

"Target folder can not be created" and the pdf message: "There is insufficient disk space to complete this operation"
Assuming you do have enough disk space left (less then 10 % of total amount available for free space is bringing sooner rather then later in to trouble) and you also have sufficient amount of RAM (more then 4GB is strongly advised especially if you are running multiple applications) and also enough VRAM (CS6 needs at least 500MB but 1 GB will give you more benefit).
And also assuming you have run the Adobe Updater for latest Bridge (5.0.1.21) then the first thing I would try is a restart holding down option key and choose reset preferences and then try again.
Personally I don't use Web Gallery but I do use the Output Module almost daily for creating PDF contact sheets (have also multiple custom templates) and have no problem at all using it.
(only difference is I'm still at 10.7 while you moved to Mountain Lion)
Could you report back if this helped you, if not you have to also delete the bridge plist file from user library.

  • Preview opening invisible files and freezing since upgrade to yosemite

I "upgraded" to yosemite and now preview more or less doesn't function. It started when I tried to open a locked document (which I had locked using adobe cs6 or cs5 I can't remember. Adobe can open it just fine (one page at a time) but preview can no longer open it. It'll open and then as soon as I scroll one page up the document freezes. and from then on out when I hover over the buttons for any document I open or have open in preview the close, minimize and full screen button do not change their icons to let you know you are hovering over them, but they still work. I can still minimize and close thing.
Additionally, when I go to open any more, they open up a blank/see through window. I can see a slightly opaque box where the file should be but there is nothing there. And I can minimize this box of nothing, and close the box of nothing, but that's it. I have to quit preview and start/get stuck all over again.
I have an early 2013 macbook pro with a dual core i7, 8 GB of ram
Lastly, as a side note, that sound the reminders makes is awful.. It sounds like my computer has gas... *facepalm*

I have similar problems. I used to be able to double click an item, such as a photo or Microsoft Word document, and have it open easily using Mavericks but Yosemite doesn't seem to work. I've tried changing the open with settings for .jpgs, etc. for each app but Yosemite changes all files to the same setting regardless of whether it's a Word document or a photo from Adobe. Running a MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 and 4 GB memory.

  • Safari 6 freezes with OSX 10.7.5

I'm using a recent Safari 6.1.6 update - and am now experiencing a problem I never had before with Safari on my OSX 10.7.5 MacBook Air system.
I am unable to use Safari for more than fifteen minutes or so before it freezes, and always when I'm switching to a new tab to view something. I never have more than six or seven tabs open. This is particularly irritating when I'm downloading material at the time, which is instantly lost, of course. Safari did freeze with earlier versions, but rarely more than once or twice a week.
Is there a way to return to earlier versions of Safari? Would this help? Any suggestions - preferable a solution - gratefully received.

  • My website causes Safari to freeze on OSX - PC works fine though!

    HI.
My web page (composed on Dreamweaver CS3) at http://kareltests.co.uk causes Safari running on Mac OSX (10.4.11) to freeze up if I try to close the window or navigate away. The page works fine otherwise, as does everything else. Only when trying to close the page, or navigate away, is there a prob. I then have to 'force quit' to get out. This behavioiur is something very new. The Mac is copmpletely updated, the last update being some weeks ago.
I've tried playing all the embedded videos through to the end to see if that makes any difference, but it doesn't. Restarting the Mac doesn't fix it.
I also tried emptying the cache and the window closed ok, but only once. The problem returned on re-opening Safari when going back to that page. Emptying the cache again doesn't clear it - that only worked once.
On a PC on any player, including Safari, there's no prob. Just on my Mac.
Maybe it's worth noting that I deleted a lot of redundant code (DW does like to generate a mountain of the stuff) but it's worked fine for months. Not any more.
    Any ideas?
p.s. just discovered that if I leave the page open for several minutes it closes ok.
This 'fix' has now worked twice, but it's hardly a solution, though it may provide a clue...?
    Many thanks.

    "12 Errors, 4 warning(s) "
Thanks. I know about that. The errors are small nit-picky things that can be ignored. Most of them are in the embedding coding supplied by the video hosts which the validator doesn't recognise.
For instance, http://apple.com generates "6 Errors, 1 warning(s)" And this forum page will give you "55 errors, 44 warning(s)"! Does that really mean I can code better than Apple?

  • IMac freezes after OSX 10.9.1 upgrade

I have a 27in iMac running OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks and Safari 7.0.1. Sometimes Safari freezes and sometimes whole computer freezes. Able to move mouse pointer around but unable to click on anything.

Please tell me that Apple is not en route to being the new Microsoft which I so happily escaped a few years ago.  My computer is doing the exact same thing.  It went years without freezing, but since upgrading to OS 10.9.1 a couple of weeks ago and the lastest version of Safari, my iMac 27 can be counted on to freeze at least daily.  As with your situation Bill, the only thing that is active is my mouse pointer, but that does nothing in that you can point till you turn blue because nothing esle on the computer is alive.  I clean my caches, I reset Safari, and keep my computer clean and orgainized.  It has frustratingly happened twice today.  I have 12 gigs of RAM so thst certainly is not an issue.  Come on Apple, get off your *** and deal with this issue.  I'll accept the fact that I can't crop a photo in iPHoto since paying for an upgrade to that piece of crap!  BTW, I can't help but distressingly note that your original complaint was registered at least 3 weeks ago and apparently nothing has been resolved.  Perhaps Apple is recruiting personnel from Microsoft.

  • I can not open iTunes on imac . And My desktop freeze. OSX mavericks !

    <Personal Information Edited By Host>

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • IBook G4 slowed SIGNIFICANTLY & FREEZES with OSX 10.4.8 and then 10.4.9 too

    Hi,
My iBook G4 slowed SIGNIFICANTLY after installing OSX 10.4.8 and then 10.4.9 and freezes often too!!!
I mean, it takes a few minuets to boot-up sometimes.... I hate that spinning wheel!
It ran great before the two up-dates, and I have done all the "verify and repair" that can possibly be done with and without the original installation DVD, including disk repair.
I had no other programs running at the installation, nor were there USB or Firewire attached. But I was plugged into the local network (how else was I supposed to download the upgrade).
Basically, can I revert to 10.4.7???
Or, is there a simple solution?

    Hi Thanks for the help,
S.M.A.R.T. Status: Verified, is appearing just like
    that.
OK, that's a good sign, though it doesn't necessarily mean that everything is okay with the drive, just that nothing is currently far enough out of spec to get flagged.
I looked in the console (I dont even know what it is)
and the only things I could find that looked dodgey
were lines such as those below...
Apr 12 10:19:11 localhost launchd: Server 3d2b in
    bootstrap 1103 uid 0: "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[41]: exited
    abnormally: Hangup
    Apr 12 10:19:18 james-rk-modzelewskis-ibook-g4
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0:
    "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[55]: exited abnormally: Hangup
    Apr 18 11:14:20 james-rk-modzelewskis-ibook-g4
launchd: Server 0 in bootstrap 1103 uid 0:
    "/usr/sbin/lookupd"[55]: exited abnormally: Hangup
These occur a few dozen times throughout the system
log. Does it mean anything to you???
Those are harmless, I think. I've seen them on my laptop, I think around when I switch the network from ethernet to AirPort or vice versa. And maybe when I put the computer to sleep, too.
One thing you should try to do is see if you can figure out a pattern to the stalls and freezes. Do they only happen when you're on the Internet? Maybe just with one particular web site or page? Also, try running Activity Monitor and keep an eye on it to see if you can catch the name of a process that's taking too much processor time.
How much RAM does your computer have, and how much free space on your hard drive? That can make a difference, too. You should have a few GB (I like to keep at least 8GB free on my PowerBook) of free hard drive space. 512 MB of RAM is pretty much the minimum for Tiger, I think. Less than that and you'll find the computer will be using swap space on the hard drive quite a bit if you try to do anything but the bare minimum of simple web pages and email.

  • Gigabit Ethernet Freeze on OSX Install

When doing a fresh install of OS 9.2 and OSX 10.1.3, I have come across some issues. Most recently, I installed OS 9.2 and when trying to update to OSX 10.1.3, it freezes on the startup screen. There is a picture of a smiley-faced mac and a spinning beach ball in the corner, soon after startup freezes. Should I install 10.1.3 and install 9.2 afterwards? Or is there any other routes I can follow? Any help is appreciated.

All MMD's came with 1000 meg per second ethernet port.
Your average high end cable modem is only capable of 6 megs persecond download and 800K upload. So an old 10Base is all anyone needs. Now if you worked at some fancy law firm that had T4 connections....you could go as fast as 200 meegabites per second.
If you want to find out how fast your connected..go to
    www.internetfrog.com and test your speed.
Anyway...the answer is NO...you cannot boost your speed by replaycing the port.

  • Drag and drop support freeze after OSX 10.9.4 update...

The "Drag and Drop" support stop working after updating my OS X Mavericks today...updated to version 10.9.4
Any file / folder / trying to drag an email from my inbox / or even an image from Adobe Bridge CC....NOT WORKING...it's freeze!!!
You can left/right click onto any file/folder to open or read...it's working perfect.... but when trying to move it...IMPOSSIBLE...
Try relaunch finder or any desktop view option...none working.
Upon restart...its back to normal...BUT of only a few minutes!!!! then same issue again....
Any idea how to fix this BUG please???
Am using a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon
