Preview Acting Up

So, over the last few days, whenever I try certain things in Preview, the application gets all weird. For instance.
1. Try to open a JPEG, and the program will simply not appear. It's showing as open in the menu bar, but no other windows will pop up.
2. Rotate an image, save (or save as), and then the image is not actually rotated.
3. Modify a file in any way, and the change simply doesn't show up. Sometimes, if I have the drawer open and switch to a different file and back again, changes will appear (color/size/cropping/etc).
What gives??

Could be as simple as a corrupt pref file. Let's try easy first...
Quit Preview. Go to Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Preview.plist and trash it. Relaunch Preview.
Any better?

  • Preview acting odd

    Hello,
My preview application has been acting strangely for about two weeks. PDFs scroll very sluggishly and once they finally start moving they're out of focus for about 5-10 seconds. Before, it was like flipping through a paper, now it's frustrating and tedious. This is happening on documents that are less than a MB in size. Any suggestions?
I tried Adobe reader, but it's so much worse.
    Thank you!

Sure, it would have been too easy
There is also a file com.apple.preview.bookmarks.plist, should I move that to the trash as well?If you have any bookmarks you will lose them and I doubt it will do any good.
Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your Preview works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Quick preview acting up

    Hi,
I spent the last few days reorganizing my Aperture library and migrating from managed to referenced files.
The problem I'm having is that Quick Preview doesn't work with the embedded JPEGs. It does work with the previews created by Aperture but they always stay somewhat fuzzy thanks to the scaling algorithm in Aperture/OSX.
Aperture does use the embedded JPEGs on newly imported images.
My question is: is there any way to get Aperture to read those embedded JPEGs again ?
The fuzzyness (even though it's subtle) is killing me since I mainly use quick preview to quickly assess image sharpness and delete the unsharp images quicly after import.
    What I've tried:
    - Delete the stored previews (this results in 1024x768 images in preview that get scaled up to full screen and are small when I press Z in full screen mode)
    - Rebuilt previews (1/2 size, quality 7): this results in somewhat workable images but still with some fuzzyness and absolutely not as sharp as the embedded JPEGs.
    - I've consolidated the masters to see if it's caused by the Referenced masters system (it isn't). I've moved them out of the library again afterwards.
    - I've rebuilt the library and did a consistency check.
It affects all my projects that were in the library prior to the reorganisation. And once again: newly imported images work properly, so quick preview isn't "broken" completely.
Any ideas on what I could try ?

The other option (which I'm considering) is to use referenced libraries and import the Raw+Jpg into Aperture. Then do a "new master from Jpeg on the raw files displayed. The jpg's are now displayed as a version. With referenced libraries, you can delete the versions without losing the raw file. If you can use the jpg, great. If you want to edit the raw, simply do a "show in finder" from under the file menu and drop the nef into NX and do your "in-camera" edits such as Picture controls ect.... Then export the file as jpg or tiff and drop back into your aperture project. I'm leaning this way to avoid using another application and Aperture is clearly more capable than View. One of the advantages of View, however, is there is an "open in NX" function. You cannot use Apertures' "edit with" command to open the raw file. It will only render a tiff or jpg to an outside app. It would be nice to be able to open the native raw file in NX using this function. Not a big deal with the "show in finder" option and referenced libraries.

  • Pre-render (preview) acts crazy and crashes Premiere - QT Bug?

    I have a MacBook Pro 17", 2GB RAM, 2.4 GhZ dual core
Looks like some sort of QT Bug:
I have set my sequence preview settings to render with QT Animation codec. When I preview the sequence, it gets stuck at a specific location on a timeline when it reaches a still image. Then I try to cancel the render, but instead it crashes Premiere. Funny thing, that putting the image at some other location on timeline renders perfect. I have tried everything - I've changed the image to another one - same thing. I've deleted all the preview files - nothing changed. Then I've tried to change the codec in the Sequence Preview Settings and I found out, that when it's on DV-PAL, or I-Frame Only, it renders just fine!!! So I suppose that it's some sort of a bug that is in QT native codec probably... (it only happens to a still image on a specific location on timeline)

As a test, try nesting the problem sequence in a new empty sequence then export that new sequence using QuickTime. Let us know whether or not that succeeds.
    Cheers
    Eddie

  • Can't run multiple instances on same page!

    Hi,
Since I got no response on the shadowbox forums after 2 weeks, I thought it's worth to post it here and hope someone can help me out.
Note: This is also related on non-joomla pages. I've tested it on plain html as well (by Dreamweaver) and get the same issue.
The following issue was posted by me on the shadowbox forums:
I was wondering if the following is possible.
I've tried almost everything where I can think of, but no luck.
Searched many forums and googled a lot, but without success.
I got feeling that I'm so close and missing some simple solution.
So I'm stuck here, I'm not able to figure it out.
This is what I want to achieve:
My website is running on Joomla 1.5. And I'm using a Shadowbox extension.
In an article I've put multiple SWF movies, like previews acting like buttons.
So when clicking on a SWF button/movie, Shadowbox opens and plays a related FLV movie.
To achieve this part I've followed the instructions at this site under FAQ > first paragraph.
    So far so good...
Now the ugly thing is when putting multiple swf buttons on a single page, after clicking a random button Shadowbox always displays the same flv movie. I did some altering with ID's and such but had no luck.
Even try to alter with the Shadowbox options and variables, flashVars and such (at this site under Options and Usage) but that worked out for me.
The strange thing is when placing the buttons, let's say in an article belonging to a section and category and make the articles paginated, after clicking the swf button the related flv plays. Browsing to the next page and clicking the button, the related flv will play also. This is the way it should be. Unfortunately it doesn't work when multiple buttons are displayed on the frontpage or an single article regardless whether they belong to sections and categories or not.
Even when a single code is placed in a single article and display 2 or more articles containg a different swf and a different related flv link only the last added flv plays with every random swf button/movie.
This the code I'm using for each swf (actionscript behavior):
    FIRST INSTANCE SWF=====================================
    on (release) {
    getURL("javascript:openShadowbox
    ('http://test.cquence-multimedia.nl/images/cqmm_test.flv','flv','title')");
    SECOND INSTANCE SWF=====================================
    on (release) {
    getURL("javascript:openShadowbox
    ('http://test.cquence-multimedia.nl/images/WizardFinal_1.flv','flv','title')");
    ================================================
This is the code I'm using in the article (2 instances on a single page):

    Best Regards,

Sorry...I still don't get it. What is it about Windows FUS that keeps iTunes from running running the process twice? It can run many other non-Apple windows apps in multiple user sessions (commercial apps, open source apps, audio/video apps, networked apps). I can even run two different virtual machines at the same time under two different user sessions.
Why can iTunesHelper.exe run twice but iTunes.exe cannot? Why can I run Safari at the same time? Quicktime Player runs fine under multiple user sessions.
Blaming it on Windows and/or FUS sounds like FUD. Can anyone give a valid technical reason? Semaphores? Mutexes? An admission (and explanation) that the Windows version is purposely crippled?

  • Iphoto does not use the proper display profile

    Hello.
I just bought a 20' Apple Cinema display and connected it to my Macbook. I have noticed a very strange behavior of iPhoto and Preview.
I will first describe the expected (right behaviour).
When I drag an image opened in Adobe LG or Aperture from the Macbook display to the Cinema display (or the opposite) after a very small delay the color of the image adapts to the color profile of the display where it was dragged. Which is the correct the behavior.
With Preview or iPhoto this adaptation does not happen and the image is displayed with the right profile only on one of the 2 display. Besides being a very annoying issue, the very strange thing is how you can choose on which one of the displays the image gets displayed with the right display color profile:
    - With Preview, the display color profile used (for both displays) is selected based on which is the default display in ColorSync display settings.
    - With iPhoto, the display color profile used (for both displays) is selected based on which display the munu bar is (!!!). That is, if you want to have your image displayed with the right display profile on your cinema display, then you MUST have the menu bar on that display. If the menu bar is on the Macbook display the image on the cinema display will be displayed with the display profile of the Macbook display. Crazy!
You can try all of the above remembering that after any change you need to quit and reopen iphoto or preview or ColorSync for the settings to apply.
My question is: why neither iPhoto nor Preview act in the right way like Aperture or Adobe LG? Or at least, why iPhoto does not behave like Preview allowing me to choose where I want the menu bar without having this choice affecting the display color profile used to display my images?
    Thank you,
    Marco

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
why iPhoto does not behave like Preview allowing me to choose where I want the menu bar without having this choice affecting the display color profile used to display my images?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Tiger vs HP Officejet 6110

Since installing Tiger, I cannot print from Safari, Quicken or iCal. MS Word and Excel docs print just fine, so I know the signal is getting through.
When I try to print from Safari or Quicken, two or six or fifteen pieces of paper feed through with no printing, though now and then a half a line will print on a page or two. Then the print monitor shows the job is compete.
I checked page set up, repaired permissions, restarted, spent two hours manually uninstalling the HP driver files, downloading and installing the very latest new driver with HP tech support. To no avail. When HP said they had done all they could, I tried Apple tech support. They suggested I do a screen save, open the file in Preview and print from there. Aside from the fact that it's an unacceptably cumbersome workaround, it didn't work. Preview acted the same way. The next suggestion was to get a new printer.
I would greatly appreciate any suggestion.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   HP Officejet 6110 All-in-one

I had a HP Photosmart 3310 with software issues. HP told me that they would refund me 75% of my purchase price or send me a new printer. The same on or a diffrent model equal to or greater then my purchase price. Ask to speak to their supivisor for a refund. They will then refer you to their tier three folk which are the ones who gave me the new printer. I got a 7410 and all but scan to OCR works.

  • Preview doesn't act the same as it did in Snow Leopard. So now how do I...?

    Hi all,
I'm getting frustrated because Preview doesn't act the same way now as it used to, and I can't find the solution in the Help menu.
Here's what I used to be able to do:
    1) I'm a composer/arranger for musical theater productions. So, as I compose or arrange individual songs, I eventually save them all as PDFs.
    2) To create a master piano/conductor's score, I used to create a master PDF file, then open up each individual song's PDF, and drag the pages into the master PDF file. Immediately after doing so, I was able to view the new pages in two-page mode, in the context of the whole book, to make sure the page turns were the way I planned them (since I often lay the music out with quick page turns in mind for the pianist/conductor). If for some reason the pages were opposite from what I planned, I just inserted a blank page before the newly-added song, to make the page turns work the way I needed them to.
    3) When I was done importing all the songs, I'd print out the whole score.
    My current problem
What I used to do (i.e., open up two documents, and drag the pages of one into the other) no longer works the way it used to. Now, Preview seems to view them as multiple separate documents, even though they're under the roof, so to speak, of one document. Let's say I drag 3 documents into the PDF I want to use as the master PDF. Let's say that each document is only a single page. I can't view them in two-page mode. I can select Two-Page mode in the menu, but it won't alter the view. Now, if document #1 is one page, and document #2 is five pages, I can view document #2 in two-page mode, but not document #1 and #2, together. (i.e., ideally, I'd want to see the one-page document #1 on the left-side in two-page mode, and the first page of document #2 on the right side.
Also, saving is a problem. It used to be that when I dragged the new pages into the document, I could just hit "save" and the new pages would be immediately included in the master PDF file. Now, Preview treats everything as separate documents, so I'll import document #5, let's say, hit "save" and it'll want to save the changes to "document #5."
The only workaround I've found for all this is to select all the pages in the master PDF and hit print, followed by saving as a new PDF.
But, do I have to do this on every addition?!? I have 40 songs, a Title Page and a Table of Contents that need to be imported into one PDF document. And they're not all ready to go right now. I was going to add a couple songs each day as I get them finalized and ready for print.
Isn't there a way to just add the new pages to the new document without Preview treating them as a collection of separate documents?
    Thanks for your help.
    Kevin

Thanks Barney! It is, indeed, working for me now. It's different than the previous incarnation of Preview, with no explanation of the differences in the Help menu (that I could find, that is).
    So, thanks for your help!
    Kevin

  • Preview and External Monitor acting bizarre

I am posting a question about a computer at work, I'm at home right now, so I don't know all the specs.
The "Preview" window in FC Studio is disabled, and when I try to run out to firewire deck (which is connected to an NTSC monitor) it only shows still images. I've tried playing with all the settings (view All Frames, Still Frames, Off; Refresh Firewire; setting external deck to different settings) Nothing is working. Not to mention that the "Preview" window shows nothing when I do this. Also, when I select "Print to Tape" it shows up on the External, but no the screen. I'm thinking there may be something wrong with the video card, but it shouldn't effect the external firewire, should it?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Have you tried a different converter, like a camera or other box? To me, it doesn't sound like a video card problem, rather a converter box issue. Most consumer cameras over the past couple year can act as digital to analogue converters, so if you can' I'd try one of those. Besides that, it sounds like you've checked all the settings I can think of with the exception trashing the prefs.
    Good luck,
    -Brian

  • Preview is freezing and acting weird

Ever since I've upgraded to Leopard, Preview is acting really strangely with PDFs. It freezes constantly for a long time, then finally completes the action. It never quits itself.
It happens when I'm scrolling through, searching for a word, almost anything. These are not huge files, just articles. Anywhere from 50 to a few hundred kb. I never had this problem in the old version of Preview. Any ideas?

Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem occurs there. If not, then you have conflicts between various preferences files or a corrupted one. See the steps I posted for resolving these at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4703015
If so, it's system-wide and I suggest manually downloading and reapplying the 10.5.1 update.

  • Web elemnt act different in crystal html preview vs infoview

We have a reports tested both in Crystal HTML preview(works) and in Infoview(does not work).
    Any info on this?

can you please describe exactly what does not work in infoview.
also note that html preview in crystal reports is not really fully functional for webelements so you should always design for the infoview viewer.

  • My print preview constantly shows and prints a 4x6 image even when I'm in everyday printing and, even after I have manually entered 8.5x11 it will still act as if it's in photo mode.

Why can't I get my print program to show anything but a photo 4x6 image (and print that) even when I am in "everyday printing" and even when I manually enter a 8.5x11 paper size?

Changes to Printer Properties settings need to be done through Firefox, not the global printer settings.

  • How do I change the default save location for Preview under Lion?

I have to modify about 200 PDFs.
When I make a duplicate of a PDF in Preview it always suggests saving it on the desktop. Instead I would like it to ask me if I want to save it either where the original file is, or where I saved something last.
Note that Default Folder X doesn't yet work with Preview. And even then it wouldn't solve my problem.

What I meant is turn off Documents and Data in iCloud in OS X. Keep it on on your iOS devices. iCloud will sync documents between the iOS devices and make them available on the iCloud web site, but it won't mess up iWorks' open and save dialog boxes. It also won't assume that you want all your documents in iCloud, which I think is undesirable anyway.
Keep iOS and OS X separate, and use the web site to move files between the two as necessary.
iOS iWork is different from OS X iWork. There are fewer fonts on an iOS device. iOS iWork programs have slightly different feature sets than OS X iWork programs, and the file formats are different. iCloud automatically converts the file format when necessary, but if you make a habit of saving things directly to iCloud, you are limited to the lowest common denominator between the two versions of iWorks. So why would anyone want iWork on the Mac to open and save documents on iCloud by default?
If you want to store files in the cloud and sync them on your Macs, SugarSync is a much better solution. It lets you choose your sync folders, it doesn't make you reorganize your files, it lets you sync all file types, it doesn't convert files to a different format and back, and it stores everything in the cloud, too. Just the simle act of saving a file backs it up and syncs it. I wouldn't live without it. iCloud is best with iTunes purchases and synchronizing Mac settings and iOS files; I woudln't live without it. The two make an unbeatable combination.

  • MacBook Pro has been acting up for a while.

My MacBook Pro started acting up at the beginning of this year. The first thing I noticed was a clicking noise that came from the top left corner. It wouldn't happen often, but over time it started to happen more frequently. Then, a few months later, it started having other problems. Infrequently, certain apps would not work normally or quit working altogether. Chrome and Firefox didn't work at all. I would have to restart my computer, and then everything would work again. This problem gradually happened more frequently as well. I used Smart Utility which told me my hard drive was about to fail or failing. I replaced my hard drive myself and this seemed to mostly fix the problem. But I do remember the apps not working problem happening one time soon after I replaced my hard drive. It was probably about 4 or 5 months ago that I replaced my hard drive and I had the apps not working problem probably about 5 times since then (which concerns me but is still a lot less frequent than before I replaced my hard drive). And now when the app problem happens, I can't even shut down or restart my computer. It does nothing when I click shut down or restart. I have to hold the power button to turn it off. I never had this problem before I replaced my hard drive when I had the apps not working problems. And I used Smart Utility recently and I believe it told me my hard drive is failing. It's hard to judge, but it seems like my computer has been running a bit slower the last month or so (getting more of the spinning beach ball icon). Also, every so often, the clicking noise still happens (if I remember correctly from replacing my hard drive, the hard drive is located in the bottom right corner, so I'm not sure if this noise could be the hard drive?). I'm skeptical to believe that I have a hard drive problem again since it's a completely new hard drive I put in 4 or 5 months ago. But at the same time, the problems seemed to be fixed temporarily by this new hard drive but are possibly slowly coming back.
I was waiting for the apps not working problem to happen again so I could write down some of the symptoms, and it just happened a few hours ago. So I'll explain some of the symptoms:
When I open Firefox, I get an error that says
    "Close Firefox
A copy of Firefox is already open
Only one copy of Firefox can be open at a time."
After I click OK, Firefox quits.
When I open Chrome, it comes up for a second, and then quits.
The dictionary app on the dashboard works (I can type in words, and dictionary entries for the words come up). This was interesting to me because I was intially thinking if it's a hard drive problem, the dictionary wouldn't work. But then I figured that maybe the dictionary gets it's data from the internet, but I'm not sure.
It seemed that I could open any picture (with the Preview app) that I could access, like pictures on the desktop and pictures directly inside the main "Pictures" folder. Folders contained inside of the main "Pictures" folder that normally held files now showed no contents. Other folders that also "showed" no contents included the "Documents" and "Music" folders. The other folder that did show contents was the "Desktop". My guess about these issues is that the items that were shown and could be accessed were stored in RAM, and everything else wasn't able to be shown or accessed because the hard drive data couldn't be accessed for whatever reason.
And then I never knew whether or not I would have been able to shut down or restart my computer this time because when I clicked on the "Public" folder, the computer did the spinning beach ball thing and I couldn't even get to the menu to restart or shut down. So I held down the power button to turn it off, turned it back on, and here we are. I'm on the computer right now and it works OK.
I'm thinking my best bet is to take it to an Apple store, but I wanted to check and see if anyone has any ideas on what the problem(s) could be. It also has some other issues, like the computer won't charge unless I jiggle the connecter around until the charge symbol on the computer turns into a lighting bolt. And if I click on the battery symbol, it says "Service Battery". If it helps, I got my MacBook Pro in 2009.
    Thanks,
    Ryan

It may be that your hard drive is either failing again or that the hard drive bay SATA cable may need replacing. And if you're getting a "Service Battery" anyway it's probably best to take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and get a free diagnosis and estimate for repair. I would specifically ask that the SATA cable be tested so that you can tick that off the list of culprits.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
