PREVIEW and QUICKTIME slow to load in SNOW LEOPARD

I've just started having a problem (after years of working perfectly) where files are taking FOREVER (up to 30 seconds anyway) to load in both PREVIEW and QUICKTIME.
This occurs both when opening files fully with double-clicking - and when wanting to Preview by just pressing the space bar. I utilise the latter frequently to audition samples (as I work with music/Logic). This used to be an instantaneous process but can now take up to 30 seconds with the "Loading Preview" message before finally loading.
It seems to be happening with all files, irrespective of size or type (ie mp3/WAV/AIFF/MOV etc)
Very ocasionally - and apparently randomly - a file will load quickly.
I've tried reparing Permissions, running Disk Warrior, reinstalling Preview, uninstalling Perian, opening another User account (in case there was a software conflict of some kind), and cloning my System onto a brand new HD with lots of free space. But none of these have made any difference.
Anyone have any other ideas as to what this might be?
Cheers in advance:)

hey andy
yeah there definitely appears to be some kind of issue (with core audio?) when i check out Console as this happens.
i've looked at the subsequent diagnostic report but not sure how to interprete it.
wold it be useful to post it here?
cheers

My MacBook (10.5.8) is very slow and has significant problems loading will Snow Leopard (10.6.3) help or make my computer slower?
Also why does my Macbook make so much noise (The noise concerns me because it is so loud it sounds like the laptop will break down or something at any point)?

It depends on your Macbook model how to open the bottom case.
Anyway you need to open up the buttom case or keyboard panel to access the CPU fan like following.

If you think you can't do that by yourself, you'd better bring it to Apple Store Genius Bar or Authorized Servce Shop to tell them about the problem.

Yes if your already on OS X Snow Leopard 10.6
See #8 Reinstall Just OS X + Software Update
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
However you should backup files REGARDLESS as anything can happen at anytime.
    Most commonly used backup methods
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro?view=documents
Yes if your upgrading 10.4/10.5 to Snow Leopard 10.6
However if your hard drive is more than 50% full, then it might be slow. Move just your users files temporarily to a external storage drive (not TimeMachine) and reboot, check in Activity Monitor than you have reclaimed drive space, then upgrade to 10.6, then reboot and Software Update to 10.6.8, then return your users files into their respective Music, Pictures, Documents etc., folders.
If you have problems upgrading to 10.6
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Optional:  For Snow Leopard Speed Freaks
I do NOT advise you upgrade to 10.7 or later on 10.4/10.5 issued hardware due to risks and performance issues, your PPC based programs will not work and require replacement.

  • Premiere Pro CC locking up and very slow to load bigger projects

I am having a problem with premirepro cc locking up and very slow to load bigger projects.
    Windows 8 machine

I am having the EXACT same issue and now we are WAY behind deadlines.  We have Adobe for Teams on 3 computers, all are HPZ820, Dual Proc with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2650 @ 2.00GHz, 32 GB RAM, Dual Video Cards Quadro 6000 4GB, Windows 7 64 bit with all the latest patches.  Everything worked on the first release of 2014 but last week there was an "update" to Premiere.  Since this update, projects work for a short period.  When you start a new project and add footage, you can scrub the footage and play the footage with no issue.  But the more assets you add, simple Titles, it slowly starts to fail.  Playing the timeline starts and stops and then finally the end result is you can't even play the timeline.  The Program window is frozen.  I have even tested starting a new project, adding assets one by one but no matter what, I get the same results.

Your profile says OS 10.5.8, Snow Leopard is 10.6.
After installing Snow Leopard, did you do a software update? Apple menu / Software update ..
If you have not run it yet, do so. It will give you the highest versions of Snow Leopard and Safari. That might help.

  • I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 1.5TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

  • I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard.

    Good Morning,
I have a MacBook Pro 15" and my warranty just ran out! I partitioned my harddrive into two partitions, one with Snow Leopard and the other with microsoft. This morning I turned on my Macbook Pro and it will not boot into Snow Leopard. I shut it off took out the battery, reinstalled the battery. Then I put in the Snow Leopard CD and booted up to disk utility and The Snow Leopard partion would not show up?? I do see the microsoft partion.
I also rebooted holding down the shift key and still no Snow Leopard
Could you please tell me what I can do, what keys do I press on restart any advice to get Snow leopard back.
    thank you.

Have you restarted holding down the Opt key?  That procedure should give you a gray screen with all of the partitions that exist.  Then select the SL partition for boot.  Also go to System Preferences and Startup Disk, unlock the lock and select the SL partition as the default boot partition, then relock.

  • I have a MacBook that is running 10.5.8 and I cannot update it to Snow leopard

I have a MacBook that is running 10.5.8 and meets the tech specs for Snow Lepoard.  I am attempting to upgrade to SL using a "Mac OS X Install DVD version 10.6.3".  However, when attempting to run the installer from the disc I recieve an error stating "This Mac cannot be upgraded to this version of OS X."  No further information is given nor are there any buttons or clicks to recieve additional info.  I receive the same error whether I'm running the installer when the Mac is already running or when holding down the C key as the computer starts up.
Does anyone know why this issue is occurring or how to resolve it?
    Thanks

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

You phone the Apple Store and order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, and if desired, update it to 10.6.8 and get Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store.

  • Safari and other aplications super slow after update to Snow Leopard. Installed the update combo and nothing happened, still super super slow. Any tips to solve this?

After updating to Snow Leopard (to install Lion later), Safari and other aplications became super super slow and Preview is not working properly, I can't print anything that was opened with Preview. Already installed the Combo update, nothing happened, Safari still taking hours to load any site. I honestly regret downloading Snow Leopard, the older version worked so much better... Hope Lion is smarter than Snow Leopard...

  • Preview and textedit slow/hangs

    Hi,
My preview and textedit are not functioning. The problem is as follows.
    - I boot my MBP2010, running ML 10.8.2
    - I open either preview or textedit app from finder or launchpad.
    - The app name pops up in the menu bar.
    - I get a rainbow twirly cursor.
That's it, i cannot use these apps which is extremely anoying.
If I open a picture or pdf, it loads preview, and it shows it after a minute or so.
This is not normal behaviour, i have installed a 3rd party SSD which is blazingly fast.
If i choose show all windows in preview from the dock, i apparently have tons of files open which i cannot quit nor open.
Textedit only shows an icon in my dock and doesnt respond. Not even to me yelling at it...
Also I have checked 'Close Windows when quiting an application' in System Settings > General after the issue occured.
After searching a bit on the internet, i have found 0 solutions explaining how to fix this issue in common English.
Repairing disc permissions doesnt solve anything. Someone also mentioned it could be related to aliases used by dropbox. I have dropbox.app installed but i don't understand how one app could completely destroy another one?
Others mentioned deleting files from ~/Library/Containers/com.Apple.Preview.
Apparently ~ means <Insert User Name>? I find this last particular sollution controversial and unclear as to which files should be deleted.
If anyone could please specify a sollution, I would be very grateful.
    Thank you in advance.

The fix is to reinstall ML by pressing r at boot and choosing reinstall mountain lion.
I still have my files and apps, so no biggie..

I thought this was supposed to be faster and more streamlined?
Now, when I try to go back and install 3.6.13 it is no longer available. What gives? I want my old Firefox back.
