PreView and RAW or ORF image files

Should Preview be able to display ORF (RAW) image files.
If so how does one set it up to do so. Preview displays PSD and JPEG files OK.
Thanks for any clues.

I don't think Preview supports RAW formats. iPhoto 08 can, but this article likes Aperture much better for RAW formatting. http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmedia/blog/2007/08/iphoto08_is_good_butaperture.html
iPhoto can Export to JPG, TIFF, and PNG.
And here's an overview of iPhoto 08: http://www.apple.com/ilife/iphoto/#overview

    The desktop image is fine, taken from the exact same pool of jpg photos.  However, as soon as the slide show screen saver comes on, the images are scrambled.  What is it about the apple screen saver algorithm that scrambles the pics?

    Nicola,
    I am sorry but we do not have an example for "Save the Overlay Figures and Text in an Image File" for CVI. Currently, you are going to need to use Window's API calls in order to get this functionality.

  • Keyword and metadata for non-image files.

    Hi, everyone.
    As I have started to use Bridge to browse files in my system including those that are not image files I tried to find information on how Bridge handles the assignment of keywords and metadata to these files but couldn't find anything on Adobe's site.
    Considering non-image files such as PDF's, MS Office (Word, Excel), Text, HTML, and others, how does Bridge handles the assignment of metadata and keywords ? Where are they stored ? Embedded in the files themselves or in a sidecar file similar to what happens to RAW image files ?
    I've read some posts from other users about problems with this. Some report that they are able to assign keywords but these aren't maintained once the file is re-saved.
    Is there a manual on Adobe's site that covers the handling of keywords and metadata in Bridge ?
    TIA,
    Joe

    Joe,
    Being a digital archivist dealing primarily with pages digitized from the turn of the 20th Century for a religious sect I am highly involved in the usage of keywords.  Each page of a work, be it either a volume of a newspaper or a book, contains keywords.  I do not use side-car files but instead incorporate my keywords directly into the resultant TIF file.
    So I used your posting to see what the answer was.  To that end I am presently working on a 1922 title, Thirty-One Years of Organized Work in Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Louisiana by Church of the Brethren from 1891 to 1922, that will consist of slightly over 500 pages.  To test your question I placed the title of the work as a keyword.  I then used Bridge's find ability.  It did not work.
    I forgot that Bridge converts all commas into semi-colons.  And changing the colons into semi-colons still returned no results.  An examination of the keywords tab showed the string broken down in to sections.  Searching for the longest string showed the problem.  Returning to my keyowrd string I removed all instances of the semi-colons and re-searched.  This resulted in a properyl found file.
    So.  The longest string I have tested to date is 120 characters, the title of the work minus the commas.  I suspect that Curt is correct in his assumption that it is limited by the operation system.  I tested this theory by incorporating a double string (without the commas) of my book's title.  This was 241 characters including the space between the duplicated title.  The search was successful.  A triple set of the title returned no hits.

  • Problems with Preview and changes made to images

    i occasionally use Preview.app (v3.0.9) to rotate or crop image files (jpegs in this instance). if I then close the image, save changes and re-open, the image is changed. however, the icon doesn't update to the new orientation/crop and if I drag-and-drop the image into Mail.app or Photoshop.app (i'm using a very old Elements 2.0) I get the original image without the changes.
    is this a fault or am I just not understanding the way it's supposed to function? surely there's a way to crop/rotate images on a Mac without 3rd party software like Photoshop?
    (i'm not talking about images i want to retain in iPhoto either, i'm a business user and don't use iPhoto for work )

    Here's several freeware graphics apps that you might want to try.

  • Importing geotagged jpeg and raw photos with xmp files issue

    I had a folder of photos (all unique, no dupes) from two different cameras. Some were .jpg and some .cr2 (raw). I used an external app on my Mac 10.6.x called PhotoLinker to geotag the photos based on gpx track files. I wrote the metadata out to .xmp files, done by that app. So then I had a folder with .jpg, .cr2 and .xmp files I then moved them to another volume and did an Import Move operation in LR3.  For the raw images, all went fine.  The images were pulled into LR and they each had the geotagged data for location. But for the jpeg images they were imported into the catalog in LR but none of them had any geotagged data for the location.
    Can someone let me know if they have encountered this problem and what they did about it?  Is this a bug?
    I even selected one of the JPG files in LR grid view, then did a read of the metadata from a file. The upper left corner displayed that the metadata file was being loaded from XMP.  But again, no geotagged information. If I load that same .xmp file back into PhotoLinker it shows the geotagged data still there.
    What gives?  Why is this happening?
    What I am using...
    Mac OS 10.6.8
    PhotoLinker 2.2.9
    Lightroom 3.4.1

    Thanks for the response and answer, Ian.
    That strikes me as really odd. I realize that jpgs can have metadata within the image file and maybe the issue for LR is which does it consider to have priority. However, if so, why not present a dialog asking the user?
    I would suggest Adobe plan on filling the gapping hole LR has when it comes to geotagging support. It currently provides very minimal support.

  • Why do Preview and Textedit open up old files unbidden?

    I open a text file or image file and the LAST text file or pic I had open opens up with the one I want. Anyone know what's up with that?

    It is one of the over 250 new features of the World's Most Advanced Operating System called Resume.
    When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
    Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
    Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
    If you want to turn it off on a per app basis, (TextEdit is by example, replace TextEdit with the name of the app)
    Launch Terminal and copy/paste this at the prompt...
    defaults write com.apple.TextEdit NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool false
    Press return.
    You can also accomplish this through the GUI by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State/TextEdit and delete that file…
    To turn off Resume globally...
    chflags uchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Press return
    The reverse of the first one is to replace false with true.
    The reverse of the second one is
    chflags nouchg ~/Library/"Saved Application State"
    Again, you can accomplish this through Finder by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting the folder.

  • Cannot write exif and tiff metadata in image file

    Hi,
    I have a public XMP text file containing exif and tiff metadata: http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/ and http://ns.adobe.com/tiff/1.0/.
    I want to write these XMP data in an image file and it doesn't work. I don't get any exceptions, just the metadata are missing in the image file.
    C#
    using (var xmpFiles = new XmpFiles())
          if (!xmpFiles.OpenFile("test.jpg", handler.FileFormat, OpenFlags.OpenForUpdate))
              xmpFiles.OpenFile("test.jpg", FileFormat.Unknown, OpenFlags.OpenUsePacketScanning | OpenFlags.OpenForUpdate);
         using (var xmpCore = new XmpCore())
              xmpCore.ParseFromBuffer(xmpPublic.ToString(), ParseFlags.None);
              if (xmpFiles.CanPutXmp(xmpCore))
                   xmpFiles.PutXmp(xmpCore);
         xmpFiles.CloseFile(CloseFlags.None);

    Does anyone can help with that problem?
    Thanks,
    Alexandra

    I found the answer by myself.
    According to the last guidelines from metadata working group, exif and tiff data should not be saved as XMP data in jpeg images anylonger because jpeg natively supports exif data.
    "The most recent (as of mid-2010) XMP specification describes the usage of Exif/TIFF properties within XMP itself. Both Exif ( http://ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/) and TIFF ( http://ns.adobe.com/tiff/1.0/) namespaces have been defined so that corresponding Exif properties can be stored. This is particularly useful if Exif properties need to be stored but the file format does not support native Exif (e.g. PNG). [...]However, this document changes this earlier XMP guidance and recommends that Exif and Tiff device properties only be mapped into XMP in the case the file format does not support Exif natively."

  • Differences between Preview and Acrobat Pdf for some files

    Good morning,
    My name is Roberto and I am from Venice (Italy).
    I'm a new Mac user (I need to use windows for my work because the softwares are only made for win).
    The problem (I think it is a problem of SL):
    I upgraded my MBP17 and iMac24 to SL.
    Last week I noticed that the file linked below showed a different color on the table background.
    The original background is orange (if you open the file with acrobat reader) while it is grey when you use Preview.
    Go to page 100 to see the differences.
    https://wwwsapp1.suva.ch/sap/public/bc/its/mimes/zwaswo/99/pdf/44022_i.pdf
    Thanks.
    Roberto

    Hi Seems a similar problem here too. Saving CMYK files in illustrator as pdf to mail to customers. A navy color in the file displays as grey in Preview Mail and Quicklook, but it prints correctly to our Xerox DC12 and opens fine in Acrobat with the same navy blue as viewed in illustrator CS4.
    We tried making the colour a spot not process same problem.
    We have tested this on an iMac with 10.6.1 with CS4 and a PowerMac with 10.6.1 with CS4. It seams to be in Snow Leopard only. The color displays on Leopard correctly in Preview, Mail and Quicklook.
    Is any one else having Preview colors displaying wrong?

  • Photoshop CS and RAW support for NEF files...

  • Can "jpeg+raw" imported single file be split into jpeg and raw files?

    I manage to choose to import my jpeg and raw pictures as single jpeg+raw files accidentely. What means with this format? can I split this "jpeg+raw" pictures into jpeg and raw again? If you edit a jpeg+raw picture are you just working with the raw file, I mean I saw that I could change the exposure on the file which you only can do on raw files. Is it a bad idea to import jpeg and raw pictures as a single file? I really don´t understand the properties of this "jpeg+raw"-file
    /Magnus Lightroom rookie

    With RAW+JPEG, the JPEG is only used for the initial Library view, prior to generating previews from the RAW file. Once you have generated previews and/or developed the image, the JPEG is unused. The edits you make won't affect the JPEG at all. It is, however, still tied to the RAW as metadata, so deleting the JPEG will flag your image as having problems (and list it as "missing" even though it's very clearly in your catalog). Tuning off the option to handle RAW+JPEG together in preferences won't fix past combo images, but it will avoid making this idiotic mistake in the future. After turning it off, export your metadata to the RAWs, then delete them from the library (not the disk) and then reimport them without the JPEGs. Peace will rule the world.

  • Preview and Texteditor open multiple files

    Preview and Texteditor often open multiple files when I only clicked a single file. It seems to open one or more previously opened files at the same time. Is this a bug, or can I disable this behaviour somewhere?

    "Restore windows when quitting and reopening apps" worked for me. However, it will not work for any apps currently open when you change the preference. Once you quit ans recopen the app, it should work. At least mine did!

  • Storing images and icons in a JAR file

    Hi,
    I current have a JAR file to store our application icons in the GIF format. The application also uses several images which I would prefer to be stored in the JAR file as JPG files.
    Is it possible to store both GIFs and JPGs in a JAR and access them from Forms?
    For Example:
    I am using code like:
    read_image_file('mess_bold.jpg','URL','IM_BOLD');
    and I have this image file in the JAR but I get the error...
    Unable to load image mess_bold.jpg for Image Item
    Also the Apache log shows...
    File does not exist: c:/oracle/frhome_1/forms/java/icons/mess_bold.jpg.gif
    Is this a config problem? I noticed that the read_image_file call looks in the icons directory which I specify in my Registry.dat file. Do the settings for default.icons.iconpath and default.icons.iconextension apply to images as well?
    Thank you in anticipation.
    Regards,
    Tom Casserly

    Hi,
    I already had the entry imageBase=codebase in my formsweb.cfg
    According to this article it is possible to read images from the JAR using the 'URL' parameter see
    https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/f?p=130:14:2109110130595761322::::p14_database_id,p14_docid,p14_show_header,p14_show_help,p14_black_frame,p14_font:NOT,137397.1,1,1,1,helvetica
    I have managed to get the images loading from the JAR but only if I have them in the same directory and format (ie gif) as the icons. As I suggested above I think that read_image_file must be accessing the default.icons.iconpath=icons/ default.icons.iconextension=gif from my Registry.dat file.
    There is also a slight problem that you cannot seem to use read_image_file in the WNFI or PF trigger as suggested here: Re: Read images from a jar file?
    Has anyone managed to access images from a JAR in JPEG format alongside GIF icons?
    Thanks for you help.

    Tom Casserly
