Preview (app) and PDFs generated by Photoshop CS3

(Apologies if this is the wrong forum for this question; I didn't see another more appropriate category to post this)
Anybody else here had problems with PDFs created with PS CS3 when trying to view with Preview? Any type that was not rasterized in PS disappears! PDFs show correctly when opened in Acrobat or Reader though so I know the type is there and it's readable/recognizable. Seems like a glitch in the Preview application.
Maybe this will be corrected with Leopard??

I made a small PS CS3 file using a couple of fonts which were Apple Casual and Stencil, used the pdf option in the print dialog box. The text was there in the doc opened in Preview and Acrobat Reader (8.1). Both of these are TT fonts. So I included one PS type Belo, and it was there also.
What font type are you using?
Yes, I know that to modify text in PS it has to be rasterized.
Could be a PS doc setup problem.
Make a new file and try putting the text in question alone on it and see if it shows up on Preview.

  • Preview.app increases PDF file size after deleting pages

Hello, I'm experiencing odd behavior with Preview.app and PDFs.
If I open a PDF with Preview, delete a page, then save the file, the file size increases anywhere form 2x to 20x. This happens both with PDFs that only contain text and PDFs that contain text and graphics. It is very frustrating because I start with a file that is 150KB, remove some pages and end up with a 10MB monster that I can't email to people.
Any help is appreciated. I can post a link to a test PDF for people to try to replicate with if it would be useful.

I generated the file with pdftex. I'm guessing that there must be different ways to encode a PDF and when Preview gets something with an encoding other than that provided by PDFKit, it rewrites the file how it likes. In my case this is increasing the file sizes. I tried finding docs about PDFKit on the Apple developer site, but couldn't find any details about ways of encoding a PDF.

Which is better software for brochures and PDF forms ? Photoshop or InDesign ? and why ?

If you are going to be making a lot of brochures, with photos, you probably want both. Photoshop to edit the photos, and InDesign to assemble and layout images with text.

  • Which apps does pdf generator need installing

    Hi
The online documentation says that PDF Generator supports a large number of formats, including doc, dwg, vsd (visio) and photoshop psd.
    It doesnt mention Illustrator (ai).
In trying these out on our dev server, i found that only doc, ai and dwg worked.
The "preparing to install" documentation says that msoffice and acrobat must be installed on the server.
Microsoft office is installed, but not Visio, so I guess that explains why visio files wont convert.
I havent installed photoshop or illustrator either.
I havent (knowingly) installed anything that supports dwg, but that works fine.
I can't find a definitive list in the documentation which says explicitly which applications are required?
Is there such a list published or available somewhere?  I need to be able to tell my customers which additional apps they will need.
    thanks in advance

In the case of Linux you should be okay (LC can use OpenOffice for the transformations that are normally done with MS Office).
However, with Unix installations there is more than just the Acrobat installation to be concerned with. For the most part, LiveCycle uses the native application (Word, PowerPoint, etc) for the conversion.

  • Preview.app increases PDF file size.

When making changes to a PDF (in my case, creating annotations), Preview.app will increase the file size of a PDF if that PDF was run through Acrobat Pro's "Reduce File Size" process. For example, I have a PDF that I created using a Book2Net book scanner. I then used Acrobat Pro 10 to OCR the file, then ran Reduce File size which shrank the file size from almost 1.6gb down to about 62mb. If I use Preview.app to make an annotation and then save the file, Preview.app will inflate the file back up to 1.6gb.
An earlier thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1478588?start=0&tstart=0) also discusses a similar issue. I'm not sure if those folks were also working with PDFs that were reduced in size by Acrobat Pro or not.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro.

That is not normal. same action with acrobat and skim do not do this. Changing file size from 170mb to 780mb (my case) should not be expected.
Preview re-formats the file (which takes a while the first "save"). It may even make scrolling and searching for text faster, but is not desirable all the time.
There is NO explanation from Apple in help or online. Keeping things simple is one thing, having unexpected and unexplained behavior is another.
Last preview update made it pretty much useless for annotations anyways.
Choosing "text" annotation used to allow for clicking anywhere on the pdf and start typing. Now, it automatically creates a text box at the center of page that has to be the dragged (and make sure not dragging other annotations with it). click T multiple times, multiple text boxes on top of each other.
I never thought I would look at Windows users with jealousy. What a bad job they are doing.

  • Can I make a (simple and basic) website with Photoshop CS3?

I know there are tools in the Photoshop CS3 that can help me with web design functions such as making slices, animated gif, layer etc. But can it help me to design and create a simple and basic personal website? I don't need any fancy stuff like dynamic html or xml (maybe I will put some music files) but only basic html would be enough. I have MS Frontpage 2003, which can help me to create a website with no problem at all but I like the slices and layers idea on the Photoshop. Plus sometimes a website that was created by Frontpage will not look the same or work properly in Firfox, which is the browser that I use all the time. I wish I could have Dreamweaver CS3 but it is too expensive for me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
p.s. If the answer is no, then I would start using Frontpage to help me with that.

Forget FrontPage. Forget you ever even heard of it.

  • My App Store App, Preview App and a few others won't open!

Recently, my App Store App, the Preview App, Calendar App, Pages & Numbers Apps, to name a few just wont open and run.  Even the Mail App, albeit opens, but wont run properly.
Ive remember seeing someone with the same problem, but im unable to findthe link again for how it was resolved.
Ultimately i could reinstall Snow Leopard again from my current copy of Mavericks (As i believe is the problem), however it would mean a complete fresh copy.  If i did this, is it straight forward to copy all my info on Time machine back over onto the new system?  Or more importantly, will Time Machine overwright & copy the corrupt copies that currently reside on my Mac?
Any advice or options to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

  • Loading Apps and PDFs to multiple iPads with different Apple IDs

    Hello,
We are deploying 200+ iPads to our business and we are configuring each of the devices individually on-sight. We have received each employee's Apple ID and password for these corporate devices.
We want to load 7 free apps to each iPad and a variety of PDFs to iBooks before we deploy the devices. We have experimented with Apple Configurator for the Apps and iTunes for the PDFs and run into a few problems.
    Apps:
When we loaded these 7 free apps using Apple Configurator from a Macbook Pro to an iPad with a different Apple ID, we had no problem. The iPad user was able to download other apps using their own Apple ID without any issues. The problem came when we tried to update these originally loaded apps. When the user is prompted to update, the Macbook Pro user's Apple ID showed up with the update and there was no way to get around that even though the device was logged into the iPad owner's Apple ID in the settings.
Is there a way to push multiple apps from one device to another without have two different Apple IDs sitting on the one device?
    PDFs:
A similar problem happened with iTunes and iBooks. When we pushed PDFs from the Macbook owner's iTunes to the iPad, there was no problem. When the iPad user tried to upload some of her own PDFs from her Apple ID in iTunes, the originally loaded PDFs were wiped.
Is there a way for both sets of PDFs to stay on the device in iBooks without either getting wiped?

I don't really have any solutions other than uploading the files to cloud storage such as drop box, google, or skydrive and then sharing them to all the users.

  • Preview.app and multipage tiff files (page number)

I scan completed job folders at my company and store the resulting files on a server for users to access. They are a multipage .tif format which is basically a fax file format that is very common among document scanners.
Preview is pretty good at viewing these except I am stuck with two problems.
    - 10.4 Preview will only show the first 250 pages of a file.
    - 10.5 Preview will show many more pages which is good, but it gives NO WAY to know what image number you are looking at!! (preview 10.4 shows image numbers under the thumbnails, but the 10.5 version for some mysterious reason does not).
So if you are looking at an image near the middle of a 500 page document, you have no idea what image number it is, and you basically have to click the little arrow on the print box until you get to that page (which can be hard to tell because you are looking at a small thumbnail of the page). It's completely unusable.
Now before you tell me "yes it does show the page numbers in the thumbnail view!!!" let me remind you that I am not viewing PDFs. Yes, for PDF files the page number is right there all nice and handy. But for these multipage tif files, no page number for you!!!
Hah, update! I have just discovered that with very short file names, you can see the image number, because Preview 10.5 appends the image number to the end of the file name on each thumbnail.
So you can see: myFile.tif-389 on page 389's thumbnail.
But if your filename is much longer, you see: myLongerFile... with no way to see the image number.
I don't even know where to complain about this. Any ideas welcome.

Multipage TIF is not common at all. Why not just save these files as PDF? Any modern scanner software should be about to generate PDF files. They won't be any larger than the TIF files and will be readable in anything with all available features.
I don't have any multipage tif files and don't even know how I could generate one. You can send your request to Apple via their Feedback page. But there is really no downside and numerous benefits to saving as PDF instead.

  • PDF Presentation from Photoshop CS3 lacks Fade Transition

I'm using Photoshop and Bridge CS3 extended and the PDF Presentation
tool for creating a slideshow doesn't contain a "Fade" transition. It has
many other goofy transitions that I would be embarrassed to
    use professionally.
I don't know if this is the correct place to ask this question or if I'm doing
this correctly (I've never posted to a forum before). I'm guessing that
Acrobat creates the slideshow but maybe Photoshop does it.
    Anybody know?
    Thanks!

That function has been transferred to the Output Module in Bridge.

  • Preview.app with .pdf: crop box view in slideshow revisted

Regarding the archived discussion found here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11230425
The question was never really answered as to provide a working solution for Nicolas. Here is his original question:
When I preview a .pdf in the "crop box" mode and I start a slideshow, it shows me the "media box" version.
How can I see the the crop box in the slideshow?
I have had this same issue with certain PDFs in Preview. The simplest and quickest solution I propose is:
    1) Open PDF in Preview
    2) Find out the actual cropped page size via Tools > Show Inspector
    3) Go to File > Print... and then to Paper Size: Manage Paper Sizes... and create a custom paper size for the cropped page size.
    4) Finally, click on PDF V Save as PDF... and save a copy of the original PDF.
When you open the file copy in Preview and go to View > Slideshow it will now compose without the crop marks and bleeds.
If anyone still is having this issue, I hope this helps.

Since the media box (as you may know) is the size of the largest page in the PDF file, regardless of placement of objects in the PDF. The crop box is always a subsection of this (or the same size, but never larger), defined by you. It should be the part of the PDF page (media box) that contains the text, pictures, etc. that you want the person reading your PDF to see.
For example, when composing the layout for print publication, you would want to set the media box to be slightly larger than the media you will be printing on. You would then set the crop box to be the precise size of the final, printed media. If you were printing on normal 8.5" x 11" paper then media box would be larger than 8.5" x 11", and the crop box to 8.5 " x 11". This way, you can position pictures and text and whatnot right up to the edge of the printed page. This will also allow you to see whether anything is positioned wrong and is hanging over the edge of the crop box (which would mean it'll be cut off when printed".
So basically, what I meant to say is: the crop box isn't meant for changing how a PDF is displayed; it's meant to control what prints out, and what doesn't, when printing to paper. Microsoft Excel does the same thing -- when looking at a spreadsheet on the computer, you see all cells. If you want to only print a portion of the spreadsheet then you'd use the "set print area" option. Setting the print area isn't the same as just printing a single page or selection of pages, although in some situations they may produce similar printed pages.

  • Service command in Preview.app - Send PDF as attachment doesn't work

I have used the following workflow for month on all my three macs.
I open up a PDF file in Preview and select "eMail PDF as attachment" from the Edit menu at the top of the screen. This will attach the current viewed PDF file to a new mail message.
I guess after updating to 10.7.2 somehow it stopped working on MacBook Pro and iMac. My Mac mini is fine.
When I do use this command I get two error messages. Service not available. Can't attach PDF to mail. Import failed. Something like that.
Does anyone know how to fix that? I repaired permissions and did all that kind of stuff.
    Thanks in advance!

Would it be possible, please, for someone who has/had this issue to send me the com.apple.ServicesMenu.Services.plist files from ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/Data/Library/Preferences and from ~/Library/Preferences?
    Thank you.

  • Preview, OCR and pdf

    Hello,
I've some trouble with pdf files.
I've some pdf files scanned in "bitmap mode".
I've used a Windows Software (PDF Xchange Viewer) to OCR the file (If you know some free software to do it on OSX, let me know). In my comprehension of the tool, it add an invisible layer of text.
After that, I've observed that spotlight can index this files and I can search word in it. So everything is ok.
But if I do some modification on this pdf with Preview (rotate a page for example), the layer is corrupted on all the file.
I can still select some text and copy it but when I paste it, I've some strange caracters (and spotlight can't index it any more)
    Thanks you.
    PS: Excuse my english...

I noticed in my tests that Preview is changing my font.
Before the modification : ArialMT (Embedded subset)
After the modification : font0000000016c03819 (Embedded Subset)
Why is Preview doing this ? And what is this font ?
