Preview app auto-resize window

Shift-command-R resizes the image to fit window. How do you resize window to fit an image at it's original size? What a glaring oversight by Apple.

I don't need the image to be full screen, just the window. And the window is not technically full screen, because you can still see the window borders and the panels. I want the image window with the different image tabs to open as big as my screen. I want the edges to come right up next to my panels and the bottom to go down to the bottom of my screen. For example: I use Mac and when you close a finder window and open a new one, it will open at the same size that you closed it. If you resize it, lets say, to fill your entire screen, close it and then reopen it, it will open the same size as you closed it. I don't want photoshop to open new image windows to the same dimension as the image. I want a grey screen to cover my entire monitor just like in CS3 and before. I really like the tabs, but I want the window to open bigger with grey space arround the image.

  • Auto resize window when opening image.

How do you make the whole window automatically resize to fit your screen without covering the palletts?  Everythime I open an image the window is hidden by the pallets. I then have to move the pallets out of the way, resize the window to fit my monitor, move the pallets back and Im ready to go. This is such a pain. I want the tools pallet to be on the left, the action and history, etc. on the right, and I want the window with all my image tabs to fit between those from top to bottom and from side to side automatically. I never had this problem in earlier versions. I have cs5.
    Thank you!

  • Preview app shows png image as transparent window

When I open a PNG file in Preview.app, it doesn't show the image.  it just shows a transparent window the size of the image.  I can preview the image in the Finder fine. Note the transparent window in the screenshot:
Is there a cache or preference file I should delete?
    Thanks,

    Preview - Outline only appears?
There are at least two different solutions within it - one involves a separate (free) program called Etrecheck, the other possible solution does not.
Did you recently update? And what system are you having this issue with? On the MBP or Mac Mini?

  • Auto-resizing pop-up window

What I'm doing is making a calendar and when you click on a
day a small pop-up window of that day's activities pops up. Well
not all the days have the same amount of activities, so is it
possible to have pop-up windows that auto-resize according to how
much text is in the pop-up window?

i dont know of any extensions that provide this....
however you could do something based on # characters. create
some calculation for the height of the window based on #
    characters.

  • Resize a picture with Preview.app?

I can't find the option to resize pictures in Preview.app :-/ And I mean the actual file/picture not just on screen zoom...
But on the other hand when you check automator, under the 'preview.app' category you have a re-scale option and it does work so the app can do it? But where's the option in the app itself? I can't imagine that I really need to load Photoshop just to make a picture smaller :-/

Well, im not sure that you can rescale pictures with preview app. However, there are nice free little apps you could install that will eat this job alive...And really easy to use.

  • My Windows Store (beta) is missing MS Office 2013 Preview apps

I used to have Win 10 TP (9926) on dual boot setup, and I had MS Office 2013 Preview apps installed.
Lately I removed the dual boot and installed Win 10 TP as the sole OS. At the same time I installed various programs I use regularly, one of which is MS Office H & S 2007.
Only today while reading a question about 2013 Preview apps, I decided to look for them in the Beta Store.
The 2013 Preview apps are no where to be found.
Not that it matters. I just wonder what happens ?

Have you tried typing "office" in the search box up at the top?  That's how
    I found them.
As for the apps them selves, they worked once for me and never again, no
matter what I do. (some apps work, some don't in my installs)

That will give me my installed 2007 version, not the 2013 Preview.

  • Preview.app cannot open jpg, auto quits

    iMac 1.83GHz Core Duo
    OS X version 10.5.5
    Preview version 4.1
Preview.app is no longer able to open simple jpg files, neither through the finder (double clicking photo.jpg) or through Preview (Preview -> File -> Open -> photo.jpg). Preview opens briefly, the image is not displayed, and then Preview quits itself.
I tried two things, both unsuccessful:
    1. Disk Utilty to repair permissions.
    2. Reinstalling Preview. (Deleted Preview-relevant files in ~/Library/Preferences/. Placed new copy of Preview.app in /Applications.)
    Console logged the following errors:

Any suggestions to get Preview.app working again?

I don't think there is a problem with your Preview.app. It sounds like you just have one bad image file.
Obviously, it would be better for Preview to provide an error message rather than crashing, but 100% robustness is a pretty difficult goal for engineers to achieve (although they actually do put a lot of work into that sort of thing).

  • Preview app freezing and slowing down MBP

Since I updated to OS Mavericks my preview app has not been functioning properly. When the app is open when viewing PDFs a window (accompanied by a progress bar) pops up quite frequently that says "Saving changes... '#' documents remaining", with the # sign representing any number of documets. Often, the number of documents "remaining to be saved" progressively increases from 1 to 8 or so, despite there being only one document open. While the app is doing these "auto saves" my computer is slowed down significantly and while these interuptions occur I am usually unable to do anything else.
I will also add that the size of the PDF files that I view are rather large, on average 70-80 MB, although I'm not sure if that is the reason for the issue because before I updated to Mavericks I didn't have this problem. And the problem does also seem to occur with smaller sized files as well.
My computer usage is usually minimal when this occurs, typically only Safari is open in the background. I was advised to reset my SMC, which I did, but the problem is still occurring. Any additional advice or solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Update: The Preview app is using a lot of memory and I don't know why.
With activity monitor on, I notice that the memory usage for the app spikes considerably when viewing PDFs, especially when I scroll, exactly the same problem as you, loveceratops. When a PDF is initially openend, the activity monitor shows memory usage around 50 MB, but when I scroll within the PDF the memory usage shoots all the way up to 500 or 600 MB. It's at this point that the glitches preciptating in Preview begin to occur.
I've tried deleting/recreating the preview app's ".plist" files in the "Preferences" and "Containers" folders, but that has not solved the issue. I want to try to reinstall Preview, and I just might, but I'm also considering reinstalling OS Mavericks since that may be easier; but I'm concerned that the same problem would still keep happening since I'd be recovering all my files from Time Machine after the reinstall.
Any help solving this issue would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. This is a very frustrating problem.

I have just experienced this exact same issue.
I have been adding text notes and highlighting to a PDF document that is saved on an external USB drive.  When I left work yesterday I told preview to save the changes.  I did notice the Saving Changes dialog appear and before I left it said 3 documents remainin, even though I only had one document open in preview.  My USB drive was connected and mounted when I left work.
On my return in the morning I noticed that the Saving Changes dialog had not gone away.  For some reason my USB drive was unmounted and I had the OS X message about ejecting drives before disconnecting them so I re-seated the USB cable and my drives remounted.  Immeditately after doing this the Saving Changes dialog in preview started counting up from 3 to 8.  It is now sitting at 8 and the progress bar is empty.
I had a look in Console and did not notice anything strange.  I also grabbed a sample of the Preview process using Activity Monitor but I have little clue what to look for.  Whilst I was running console and activity monitor and such I did notice that the Saving Changes dialog has climbed further to 14 now and it appears to increase whenever I bring preview into focus or move away from preview.  I appear to have no option but to force quit preview so that I may continue working.
    My PDF document is 26.5M.
    I have a Macbook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011), 1.7GHz i5 with 4GB RAM running OSX Mavericks 10.9.1.

  • Preview.App does not find text in pure text pdf works in other PDF viewers

Hi I am using reportlab an open source python based pdf generating package to generate pdf reports.
The generated pdfs are searchable using Adobe acrobat and Google -Gmails built in pdf viewer . However in Preview.App the text seems to be only recognized as individual characters . For eg the text "hello world" will not match hello or world , but typing just h into the search bar will show up matched text as "h el l o" . So although visibly the text appears as a single word , semantically the words just seem to be composed of one or two characters.
Only Preview.App seems to have a problem with the generated pdf. Adobe Acrobat ( Mac and Windows) , Google-Gmail pdf-view , Evince-Gnome-PDF viewer ( Linux) dont have any problem with finding the text in the PDF documents generated.
I have a thread in the reportlab user forum discussing the issue (see http://two.pairlist.net/pipermail/reportlab-users/2009-August/008643.html). ANd the problem definitely seems to be with Preview.App . The pdf (sample see example text in corner) is available at this url ( http://s3.amazonaws.com/code-itch/searchtext.pdf)
The app is targeted at scientist Mac users . And I want to have the pdf reports searchable and indexed by spotlight , so getting this working is very important for me.
    Your help is greatly appreciated
    Hari

The posts on the reportlab newsgroup suggest that
"> If the preview is actually rendering the pdf and then searching, the 0
degrees case should be searchable. If that's the way the search is happening
then it's no surprise that the search should fail if the rendered letters
    are at 90deg." -Robin Becker
Test cases show that search fails completely at rotations of 90 , succeed partially at rotations of 45, succeed fully at rotations of 0.
So , is there a way to prevent Preview from only searching the final rendered PDF. The pdf I am complaining about are searched fine in the many other PDF readers I tested that probably handle search differently.

  • My App Store App, Preview App and a few others won't open!

Recently, my App Store App, the Preview App, Calendar App, Pages & Numbers Apps, to name a few just wont open and run.  Even the Mail App, albeit opens, but wont run properly.
Ive remember seeing someone with the same problem, but im unable to findthe link again for how it was resolved.
Ultimately i could reinstall Snow Leopard again from my current copy of Mavericks (As i believe is the problem), however it would mean a complete fresh copy.  If i did this, is it straight forward to copy all my info on Time machine back over onto the new system?  Or more importantly, will Time Machine overwright & copy the corrupt copies that currently reside on my Mac?
Any advice or options to this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • Preview.app increases PDF file size.

When making changes to a PDF (in my case, creating annotations), Preview.app will increase the file size of a PDF if that PDF was run through Acrobat Pro's "Reduce File Size" process. For example, I have a PDF that I created using a Book2Net book scanner. I then used Acrobat Pro 10 to OCR the file, then ran Reduce File size which shrank the file size from almost 1.6gb down to about 62mb. If I use Preview.app to make an annotation and then save the file, Preview.app will inflate the file back up to 1.6gb.
An earlier thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1478588?start=0&tstart=0) also discusses a similar issue. I'm not sure if those folks were also working with PDFs that were reduced in size by Acrobat Pro or not.
    Anyone else have this issue?
    10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro.

That is not normal. same action with acrobat and skim do not do this. Changing file size from 170mb to 780mb (my case) should not be expected.
Preview re-formats the file (which takes a while the first "save"). It may even make scrolling and searching for text faster, but is not desirable all the time.
There is NO explanation from Apple in help or online. Keeping things simple is one thing, having unexpected and unexplained behavior is another.
Last preview update made it pretty much useless for annotations anyways.
Choosing "text" annotation used to allow for clicking anywhere on the pdf and start typing. Now, it automatically creates a text box at the center of page that has to be the dragged (and make sure not dragging other annotations with it). click T multiple times, multiple text boxes on top of each other.
I never thought I would look at Windows users with jealousy. What a bad job they are doing.

  • Problem displaying characters from pdf file in Preview.app

    Hi,
I hope someone can help with this problem.
I have some issues with the display of pdf files on OSX. The problems are with ligatures like 'fl' which Preview.app displays incorrectly as 'oeu'. There are other symbols which Preview also displays incorrectly.
This problem is not affected by cleaning the font cache and as far as I can tell all the fonts are present and correct. I am guessing the problem has something to do with Preview finding a different version of the Times or TimesRoman font than Adobe Reader uses, and so it gets the wrong symbol, but I'm not sure.
How can I ensure that Preview uses the same fonts as Adobe Reader? and how can I get Preview to render my pdf's correctly?
Here is a sample of the problem with Preview.app (4.1):
and with Adobe Reader (9.0.0)- correctly rendered:

My computer automatically open PDF inside the Safari
window, but I wish it would go back to opening it
externally via Adobe. (maybe we should trade
    computers:-)
Anyway, we have the same question.
How do we control whether PDF launches internal to
    Safari, or external in Adobe?
This is what I would like to as well. I often have a lot of pdf files I need to open and then save to my hard drive. When I click on a pdf file on a website Safari opens it and then I need to right click in the document to open it with Adobe. How can I get it to open in Adobe the first time without having to right click after it opens in Safari?
    Thanks!

  • Preview.app is extremely slow opening 500 jpg from external HD

    Hello everybody,
yesterday I wanted to open a folder of approx. 500 jpg-Files from an USB-HD for a slideshow. I switched to the folder and opened all files in it (only jpg) via Command-A, Command-O.
Preview.app took several minutes to load the images.
After I copied the folder (1,27GB) to my internal Harddisk, the same process took a glimpse of 2 or 3 seconds.
What's wrong with the opening from an external source?
Why does Preview.app open all Images at once instead of opening them when being switched to during the slideshow, and why is the same process so much faster when loading from an internal HD?
Can you recommend any other (free) slideshow apps?
    Thanks for any comments
    Andreas
    PowerBook 15'' Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Andreas, you seem to have at least partially answered your own question. review won't play a Slideshow until all the images are loaded, and from an external drive connected by USB it takes 3.5 minutes for you to load them.
If you just want to play a slideshow of the pictures then you do not need to use Preview at all. In a Finder window, select the pictures you want to include, Control-click and select slideshow. See if this plays immediately…
…Actually, I just hooked up my Firewire external and tried it. The slideshow played immediately.
