Preview.app - Behaviour of Tiger's Preview for Leopard's Preview?

Hi there,
I am a web designer and I use Leopard's Preview to look at different pages of a website's design. This includes opening several pages as images and switching between them. And this is where I'm having alot of issues with Leopard's Preview.app and long for Tiger's good old Preview.app.
*1. Blurry images for a moment*
When I open several images (like PNGs or JPEGs) together and switch between them within Preview, the new image is always blurred for a short moment, which looks strange. In Tiger's Preview the new image was always shown instantly in 100 % quality. This is not a real problem, but it annoys me. Even more in the full screen mode. Is it possible to turn off this blurry moment?
*2. Unpredictable scroll position*
Again, when I switch between several images which are of different height, the old Preview showed the new image at the exact same scrolling position as the image before. So when I was looking at the top of image A and switched to image B, Tiger's Preview showed the top of image B.
In Leopard' Preview the scroll position of the new image is totally unpredictable. Sometimes it shows the middle, sometimes the top of the new image. Is it possible to tell Leopard's Preview that it should behave like Tiger's Preview here?
*3. Crop rectangle without outer fill color*
If you used the crop tool in Tiger's Preview the image parts around the crop rectangle were darkened. In Leopard's Preview they are not. Here again: Is it possible to have the old behaviour again?
Hope you can help me.
Cheers,
Robert

Actually, it has seemed to some that the blurriness never does completely clear up, and that the Leopard version of Preview will not display the same degree of crispness that the Tiger version does. You can run the Tiger version in Leopard with a bit of mild hacking--indeed, you can run both versions simultaneously. See this archived thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5889735
Of course, you have to have a Tiger version still around someplace....I renamed my Tiger version OldPreview, copied it to my Leopard drive and performed the hacks described in the above thread. It is still working in 10.5.5.

  • Preview.app search without toolbar

    I can't bear it anymore.
I view pdfs (lots of them) in a clean window, with no huge icons taking screen space, no toolbar/sidebar, I take advantage of the marvelous control tool that is my MBP's keyboard, but the search feature of Preview.app has been killing me now for I think at least 2 years.
I crave for the possibility to just use Cmd+F type my text and go to the next hit with Cmd+G, like in Safari.
    Instead it's a mess:
I get a bar appearing at the top of the window if I want to hide it I have to click done, which also cancels my search (I cannot use Cmd+G). In Safari with Esc the bar disappears but we can still use Cmd+G. Ideally I would not have any bar appearing, just a bubble with my search text, but the Safari-style bar is definitely ok.
If I hit Cmd+F again my previous search is deleted, so I cannot edit/refine my search. I have to retype everything very carefully.
There is also the huge side panel with thumbnails and rankings of hits which I could not care less for 99% of the time, which pops up everytime I hit Cmd+G, and which I hide after most searches with CmdShiftD, if I am not waned.
    My questions are:
Is there anyway to live better with the current Preview.app? Without keeping the large toolbars/sidebars/panels visible all the time.
Is there any improvement coming with the next Mac OS?
Can Apple Mac OS people responsible for this interface hear me?
    Thank you for any help.

Press command-F, and providing it is not graphics text, place double-quotes around the phrase you want to match, and press return. Notice the arrows in the upper right corner of your document that allow you to advance or retreat to search matches.

  • Preview app not working properly in SL

Since installed 10.6.1 SL on 15in MacBook Pro, preview.app won't display images in its main window; preview opens and images can be seen in preview "sidebar". iPhoto seems to be working ok so far.
    Any suggestions?

Okay, I know something about this part! I've been told on another forum that Apple is now placing a quarantine flag on files downloaded from the internet, which prevents mass batch picture opening from functioning the way it did in 10.5. It seems like the system refuses to open pictures 2, 3, 4, 5, etc, until it successfully accepts the previous file as valid. Which is why the first attempt to open 1-5 results in 1, the second results in 1 and 2, the third results in 1 and 2 and 3, etc. I don't know if the quarantine flag explanation makes sense or not,
IIRC the .jpg and .jpeg file format was supposed to be almost as safe as the .pdf format. Has something happened to make a .jpg or .jpeg file a threat to the Mac OS?
Back when I was using Windows (bought my first Mac in July 09) I used to subscribe to Fred Langa's Langalist newsletter. Later when he merged his newsletter with Windows Secrets, I subscribed to that newsletter as well. I remember reading in one or both that while it was theoretically possible to infect a .jpeg with malware, nobody had done it yet, and it was probably too difficult for anyone to be bothered with it. Perhaps my memory about this is faulty.

  • Problem on Lightroom4, Aperture but not on iPhoto or preview.app

    Hello,
I've got a strange problem and can't find any answer when searching on Google.
I moved my photos (JPEG) from iphoto to LR4 and aperture.
The exported file from iphoto looks the same in mac preview.app than in iphoto. However, once imported in LR4 or aperture the quality is awful (lot of noise).
    Strange points include:
    - If I export back the image from LR4 and aperture, it looks once again just ok with the preview.app; so it's not some compression happening when I import the photos in the new tools.
    - If I take a screenshot of the photo looking awful in aperture or LR4, the screenshot looks ok on preview.app...
    - Same problem for photos in sRGB or Adobe RGB.
Can someone give me an hand on this?
    Many thanks,
    Florian

With or without mountain - Lion MacOS 10.7.4 Beta is also pre-release and subject to the non-disclosure agreement
Please also note that I realize that when using a second screen, I don't have the same issue.
How is your double-screen setup? What goes on which display? And have you tried to switch the two displays?

  • Can anyone remember when Preview.app first gained support for bookmarks?

Can anyone remember when Preview.app first gained support for bookmarks?
I think it was either with the advent of Tiger or reasonably early on within it's development (e.g. 10.4.2), although I may well be wrong.
The reason I'm asking is that there used to be a capability in Preview.app that allowed you to open multiple PDFs in one window and print them all at once. I'm wondering about going back through my desks and hunting it out:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1388297

    Ha! Fixed it!
Kept reading all "Preview+plist" threads and found this one: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17195650#17195650
And sure enough, trashing ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/ reset the preferences for Preview.app and now all key commands work without crashing.
But if erasing that folder, and more importantly the plist in it, did reset the preferences, that would suggest the preferences were being saved there. So I now changed the prefs and quit the app, and then trashed the containers folder again, and restarted the app. But strangely the prefs remained. So I thought, well if the prefs were being stored there, maybe erasing that plist made Preview reinstate the regular plist in the regular Preferences folder? But no go, as there's still no regular Preview plist in the regular Preferences folder.
So now, there's no regular plist, and erasing the Containers folder no longer resets the prefs, but changes to prefs are still being saved somewhere … so where the **** are they being saved now? It's like they just keep burrowing down further into the ground with every attempt to erase them. What the **** is going on? ;-)
Anyways, the initial problem is solved, so … maybe I should just let the mystery remain? ;-)

  • How to restore package contents for preview.app after Mac OS X Lion upgrade

since installing Mac OS X Lion I have been totally unable to run Preview.app. After having attempted to troubleshoot the problem I discovered that the package contents for the Preview application no longer existds on my hard drive. Does anyone know where I can obtain a another copy of the preview application? or how I might go about restoring the package contents for Preview in order to run Preview.app?

Use Pacifist to extract it from the InstallESD.dmg residing inside the Install Mac OS X Lion.app.

  • Suggestions for Preview app features (Snow Leopard)

There's lot's to like in the new Preview app, but I'd like a few more things:
    1. Ability to edit and reorder Tables of Contents.
    2. Ability to reorder Bookmarks (and to hierarchically group them)
    3. Sensible control over formatting of links.

    Exactly!

  • Preview app not working in Leopard

    Hi pals,
I have just upgraded my Macbook (Tiger) to Leopard and updated with all necessary patches (10.5.2), but i am not able to launch preview which resulted in not able to launch all pictures and pdfs. When i double click on Preview (through Appln > Preview.app) the icon comes out and go immediately! Is there anywhere i can download preview from apple's site??? How do i repair it?
    Please help!!
    Thanks pals

Unfortunately, yes it is a clue. The nib file in question is here:
    "/Applications/Preview.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/MainMenu.nib"
As you can see, it is buried deep inside the application, that particular nib file is the programming stuff that tells Preview how to draw its menu. If that is broken, obviously the program can't run. And if that is broken, one wonders what else may be wrong. You really need the Leopard install disk so you can get an unbroken version of the program. Meantime, you can try other programs to look at things. For instance, almost anything will open a jpeg, including your browser. The browser will also open lots of other graphics, such as gifs and pngs. You can open PDF files with Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download from Adobe), or even QuickTime Player (believe it or not). Indeed, QT Player will also open pretty much any graphic file, including Photoshop files. I suspect you can use it to view pretty much anything that Preview will open.

  • No thumbnail images in icons with Preview since reinstall of Tiger

Since a HDD crash and reinstall of Tiger at Apple Store with updates to 10.4.11, Preview.app is now NOT making image thumbnails but only shows an icon with the Preview logo and file type, ie. JPEG, PNG.
Also in Folders most images, but not all, are not showing up as they used to with miniature images.
This makes it very hard to tell what the image is merely with a number for the filename.
I tried deleting the plist but that didn't help. Anyone have any suggestions how to get real thumbnails back?

    Hi BDAqua,
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried it several times to no avail and noticed that an older version of Preview which had been archived on an external drive was 13.2 MB on disk while the one which the Apple Store put onto the new hard drive was only 3 MB, even though they are both v3.0.9 (build 409) I've tried both and there doesn't appear to be any difference in functionality.
Still no thumbnails except on a few .jpgs. They do work from iPhoto if they are normal .jpg pictures if I drag the pic to the desktop from the iPhoto Library, but not panoramas which have been stitched, photos which have been cropped, modified or .gif or .tiff.
Guess we'll just have to keep looking for the answer to why they won't show up all the time.
    Thanks anyway.

  • Preview app opens "split screen" on dual monitor setup

This is a minor issue, I rarely use the utilility "Preview" app. but I'd still like to understand this issue....I use a two monitor setup (MBP & StudioDisplay)..
The following happens if the window was last closed in "expanded" mode (you can see options for Drawer, rotate, etc)
When "Preview" launches and opens a window, it places the top portion of the window on the secondary display and bottom part of the window on the primary display.
This Does Not happen if the window was last closed in "non-exanded" (collasped) mode (sorry, I don't know the proper term).
In other words, in respect to it's position on the screen, when the window opens it always assumes it's in "collasped" mode.
    Weird... any comments?

There's something wrong with the way Preview handles dual monitors. In my case if I open a smallish item, for instance a small png, instead of opening in the upper left corner of my main monitor it opens so that about half an inch of the Preview window is sticking over onto the second monitor (which is to the left of my main monitor). I had never "collapsed" the tool bar before, so I just now tried that on a small png, then closed it and re-opened. Sure enough, without the toolbar it opens properly. Display the toolbar, close, reopen, and it sticks onto the second monitor. Weird indeed. Larger size files open normally.
This started with the Tiger version of Preview. If you wish you can send feedback:
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/feedback/
Maybe it will help get this odd bug squashed in a future version of Preview.

  • Preview app will only open 20 images

    Hi.
For me, the Preview app will only open 20 separate images at once. When I open the 21st image, it opens in the 'drawer' of the 20th image, as do subsequent images I open.
This is not the behaviour I want. I want to be able to open any number of images and have them exist within their own window. Preview in 10.1 I believe allowed this!
    I am running 10.4.10 with Preview 3.0.9 (409).
    Any and all help appreciated!!
    - JD

    John,
I was able to duplicate your problem. I messed with different sized pictures thinking it might be a memory problem, it was not. Also tried different preference settings, no luck. My conclusion is that 20 pictures is a limit imposed by the programers.

  • Preview.app ignores "Image DPI" when scaling

In 10.4 Tiger, Preview.app did the right thing and would print images according to what would be their correct and natural size. For instance, if I scanned a document at 200dpi, and it was 934px wide, Preview.app would print it to paper so that it was 4.67in wide. This is correct behavior.
It knows that the JPG I'm printing is 200dpi because that information is in the JFIF block. You can see this by hitting Cmd-I when viewing a .JPG and looking at the JFIF information.
10.3 was broken in this manner, it would just try to print as many pixels as it could on the printer, or scale it to take up the size of the whole page.
Apparently 10.5 Leopard does the same thing as 10.3--it won't print a document the right size. When I choose Scale: 100% the print size is much bigger than 8.5x11 when it should fit in 4.67in. The other options are scale to the size of the page.
Is there something I'm missing? Is this a regression?
    Thanks!

I was missing something. When I filed a bug, I got a response that asked:
+Do you have the Preview Image preference entitled “Respect image and screen DPI for scale” checked on or off and does either way make a difference to your workflow?+
The result is that when this is chosen, the scanned DPI is respected not only on the screen but also for the printed output. This is what I expected. Thanks Apple!

  • Migration of preview.app bookmarks?

OK. So I was misled by the Apple install instructions for Lepoard on this two week old Macbook. I booted the machine, setup what I hoped would be a temporary Tiger account. I then double-clicked the Lepoard installer, only to have it reboot. (I could have done that on my own.) I did an upgrade install not to lose iLife, and used the migration wizard to transfer all but some of the 'settings'. My bookmarks in Preview.app are gone.
The problem I ran into in the Migration wizard was that the account I had setup in Tiger had the same short name and long name as the one on my other machine. It did however migrate the necessary file: com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist. I installed the Property List editor but that didn't seem to help, and viewing it in texteditor didn't format it properly. (Quicklook worked fine oddly enough.)
So I used Textwrangler to edit the file with the proper paths and resave it.
There are still no bookmarks in Preview.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?
How do I attach a file to this forum post?
    --Sam

Thanks John, that blog was helpful as usual.
One thing I did not quite get was this: If you are migrating app to app, you have to create an application with the same settings on the destination. My question is what about the relational schema? So say in dev I have a schema for HSS, Planning, Application1, RepAnaly etc. Do I need to recreate the schema with the same names in prod? The import file does have relational data, I just did not see anywhere in the documentation if I have to create these schema.

  • Preview.app -- tools -- adjust color = crash

I noticed that if I open anyfile.jpg with preview.app, and select the 'tools' tab, then 'adjust color' and drag the slider a little, it will crash, every time.
    Mac 10.5.1, Preview.app Version 4.0 (469), reproducable = 100%.
    I didn't find a similar bug

This sounds like an issue of an upgrade over tiger.
When a upgrade is done leopard is neatly overlaid over tiger and all existing extensions, plugins, etc. are preserved.
That does not mean that the plugins and extensions are compatible with the new OS.
If the overlay does not work you likely have an incompatible extension, plugin or system modification software installed.
The simplest cure is to do an archive and install, preserving user and network settings.
This allows for a new os to be laid down with no additional plugins or extensions installed.
You can then test the system after a software update.
At this point the problem should be gone.
You will need to reinstall any applications that are not drag and drop.
This should now be done slowly.
Reinstall an application, apply any updates and test.
Add applications into the system slowly making sure that if one brings a problem into the system that you can know that the program is the source of the problem.
Its a good idea before installing an application to know how to remove it if it turns out to be a problem.
Remember that applications that were released under a particular OS were not written for any OS other than that OS.
One more point. Leopard was meant to overlay Tiger.
If you start with an older OS you need to perform an archive and install because Leopard will not neatly overlay anything other than Tiger.
In fact, the installer will likely not give you the option to upgrade.
