Preview.app can't constrain selections/cropping to a square anymore?

Apparently Preview.app can't constrain selections/cropping to a square anymore (with the shift key). Now I have to open Photoshop to do something I used to do in Preview? Why would they take this out?
Say it isn't so!

I am missing this feature too, or maybe there is a shortcut I don't know of?
I am used to draw a smaller rectangle with the same proportions by starting from a corner point and then move that rectangle around to get the best result. When everything is fine pressing cmd+K crops the image.
This isn't possible now, but someone my have a good advice?

  • Acrobat Distiller.app can't be selected when printing to Adobe PDF 9.0

When trying to print a word 2004 doc to Adobe PDF 9.0 ( using the Adobe PDF 9.0 option from the Printer drop-down list within the print dialog box - I have CS4 Design Premium installed including Acrobat Pro 9) I'm asked to locate my copy of Acrobat Distiller in a dialog box. I point it to the correct location. However Acrobat Distiller.app within folder Applications>Acrobat Pro 9 is greyed out and can't be selected. How do I get round this?

Hello lisagig and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I would be inclined to run a repair disk permissions first and if that doesn't help then I would reset your printing system. Note that this will remove all of your current printer queues so if you have a number of network printers in the list it would be handy to make a note of their network queue, which you will see via the Print & Fax > Options & Supplies > General pane shown as URL.
To add the PDF printer queue back, you will need to make the Advanced icon appear in the Add Printer pane. To do this, open Print & Fax and click to Add a printer. Control Click on the current toolbar (next to More Printers will be fine) and select Customize Toolbar. Drag the Advanced icon to the toolbar. Now click the Advanced icon. After a few seconds this pane will become active so you can select the Adobe PDF 8.0 (pdf) in the Type column. Every other column will autofill so leave them as they are except for the Print Using menu, where you will have to open, click 'Select a driver to use' and then type Adobe in the search window. This should show the 'Adobe PDF 3016.102'. Select this and click Add to complete. Now try printing with this new Adobe printer to see if the error has stopped.

  • When viewing a PDF in the Preview app can I show the PDF in the Finder?

Hi, if I open a PDF in Preview, usually from Safari I cannot then find away of showing the PDF in the Finder.
Usually with these PDFs, say I have opened a bank statement, I like to 'Move to' and 'Rename', both which I can do from in Preview but I then seem unable to show the PDF in Finder.
Is there a simple way I am overlooking?
    Regards

    Right-click the proxy icon:
then click the folder below it:

  • Preview app can't open

    WHY?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Try the action that you're having trouble with again. Post any messages that appear in the Console window – the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • Acrobat ClearScan + Preview.app

    Hello all,
I am using Adobe Acrobat X to vectorize characters in scanned books with Adobe's ClearScan technology which produces a custom font set for each PDF.
ClearScanned PDFs are greatly beautiful and light, and Preview.app can open them properly. However, when I save the PDFs after putting some comments in them, the text of PDFs become non-searchble.
Does anyone know how to avoid this problem?

    Hi Akira,
I do have the same problem and did some research through various message boards. Apparently Apple's Preview viewer deletes the non-system font information that is put in the PDF file by Acrobat while doing a 'Clearscan'. So as soon as you save the file using Preview, you unknowingly delete all the information on the text 'behind' the visible characters. This is a huge issue for me as I highlight through a lot of PDF documents which I receive from various sources and many of the older documents are scanned using Acrobat's Clearscan feature to restore smooth fonts and drastically reduce the size of the documents.
One solution is to stop using Apple's Preview tool and use another tool. Some have mentioned that Skim provides annotations in a different file without affecting the source PDF. Another solution if you have access to Acrobat (for which there is a 30 day trial option) is to save the document to a TIFF image file and then re-OCR the file using the 'retain image' option. The disadvantage is that this file will be much bigger and slower to scroll if you want reasonably smooth text. If you do this, you should set the properties for output to TIFF and convert to PDF options to use 600dpi (or at least 300dpi) and use lossless compression on images so that your text stays nice looking. If you ensure that your TIFF output is in black-and-white the file shouldn't be ridiculously large.
Hopefully they will fix that problem with Preview soon. The improvements made to the highlighting feature of Preview made an essential tool for my daily work and that of many other academics.

  • Preview.app selection dimensions?

In Tiger (OS X 10.4), when I wanted to crop an image in Preview, I would make a rectangular selection by clicking and dragging. If I held down the Option key while doing so, a little window would appear next to my cursor that displayed the pixel dimensions of the selected area. This allowed me to adjust the selection to precisely the size I wanted, which was very useful. However, in Leopard (OS X 10.5), this feature seems to have disappeared. I hold down the Option key but that little selection dimension display doesn't show. Did Preview lose a feature in the Leopard upgrade, or am I doing something wrong?

Sounds great -- but is that possible?
Sure is. I just launched the Tiger Preview, and it is still working in 10.5.2 (and you can still constrain to a square by holding down the Shift key). See the directions in this thread:

If you have a problem, see my reply near the bottom. I needed to do one more step than the original hint to get it to work for me.

  • Preview.app - pixel selection dimensions are back!

Here's another of Snow Leopard's little unreported fixes.
I asked a question in the "Using Mac OS X Leopard forum" back in January 2008:
"In Tiger (OS X 10.4), when I wanted to crop an image in Preview, I would make a rectangular selection by clicking and dragging. If I held down the Option key while doing so, a little window would appear next to my cursor that displayed the pixel dimensions of the selected area. I hold down the Option key but that little selection dimension display doesn't show. Did Preview lose a feature in the Leopard upgrade, or am I doing something wrong?"
In Snow Leopard, this feature has been reinstated and appears to behave the same as it did in Tiger. Hooray! Thanks for listening, Apple!

Sounds great -- but is that possible?
Sure is. I just launched the Tiger Preview, and it is still working in 10.5.2 (and you can still constrain to a square by holding down the Shift key). See the directions in this thread:

  • Preview.app with .pdf: crop box view in slideshow revisted

Regarding the archived discussion found here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11230425
The question was never really answered as to provide a working solution for Nicolas. Here is his original question:
When I preview a .pdf in the "crop box" mode and I start a slideshow, it shows me the "media box" version.
How can I see the the crop box in the slideshow?
I have had this same issue with certain PDFs in Preview. The simplest and quickest solution I propose is:
    1) Open PDF in Preview
    2) Find out the actual cropped page size via Tools > Show Inspector
    3) Go to File > Print... and then to Paper Size: Manage Paper Sizes... and create a custom paper size for the cropped page size.
    4) Finally, click on PDF V Save as PDF... and save a copy of the original PDF.
When you open the file copy in Preview and go to View > Slideshow it will now compose without the crop marks and bleeds.
If anyone still is having this issue, I hope this helps.

Since the media box (as you may know) is the size of the largest page in the PDF file, regardless of placement of objects in the PDF. The crop box is always a subsection of this (or the same size, but never larger), defined by you. It should be the part of the PDF page (media box) that contains the text, pictures, etc. that you want the person reading your PDF to see.
For example, when composing the layout for print publication, you would want to set the media box to be slightly larger than the media you will be printing on. You would then set the crop box to be the precise size of the final, printed media. If you were printing on normal 8.5" x 11" paper then media box would be larger than 8.5" x 11", and the crop box to 8.5 " x 11". This way, you can position pictures and text and whatnot right up to the edge of the printed page. This will also allow you to see whether anything is positioned wrong and is hanging over the edge of the crop box (which would mean it'll be cut off when printed".
So basically, what I meant to say is: the crop box isn't meant for changing how a PDF is displayed; it's meant to control what prints out, and what doesn't, when printing to paper. Microsoft Excel does the same thing -- when looking at a spreadsheet on the computer, you see all cells. If you want to only print a portion of the spreadsheet then you'd use the "set print area" option. Setting the print area isn't the same as just printing a single page or selection of pages, although in some situations they may produce similar printed pages.

  • Crop Tool - only constrained selections possible

Using the crop tool I can only make selection marquees that are constrained as if I am clicking a corner handle. When the selction is finished I have no side handles only four corner handles.
Does anyone know what I am doing wrong??
    I would appreciate any help.

CS5 but I have worked out what was wrong; I had measurements in the width and height boxes; I cleared the measurements now all is fine; thanks.

  • How can I get next button in preview app

    Hi,
How can I use next button in preview app. Means in one folder I have 10 photos and I want to open each photo to view in preview app. Or any other options to use the next button , plz help
    Yas

If you open all 10 at once in Preview, they will open together and there will be a filmstrip along the side for navigation.
Or, if you select all 10 in the Finder and simply open QuickLook (File/QuickLook or press spacebar shortcut), you will see Previous/Next buttons in the top left corner without having to open any programs.

    http://mashable.com/2013/10/23/clean-install-os-x-mavericks/
If this doesn't work, which it didn't in my case, then download
    Pacifist.
    http://www.charlessoft.com/
You will need a copy of the Maverick installer.
Use Pacificst to " Open Apple Intallers"
The go to Contents of Mavericks->Contents of EssentialSystemSoftware->Contents of Essentials.pkg->Applications
Then Click on the programs that don't seem to be working and insall. This helped me update certain applications that weren't working such as App Store, Font Book, Mail, and any others.

  • How can I add email (via outlook client) to share options of preview app

how can I add email (via outlook client) to share options of preview app

You can't.  Apple's share button only supports Apple Mail (as specified by launching Apple Mail, choosing preferences and choosing general.).  Maybe Apple will open this up to other apps in future updates.

  • Can no longer select text in Preview

    Hello there,
A very annoying problem: I selected some text in a .pdf file that was opened with Preview and I marked it yellow, however once I saved it I could no longer select any more text, it is like the function has disapeared. I even tried restarting the computer, but I can no longer select text in that file. How odd?
Funny enough, the phenomenon doesn't occur with all my .pfd files. I guess it is a bug, but quite annoying. Any one else having the same problem?

Thanks for posting back though i'm sorry it didnt work.
I believe there are also other dashboard plist files in that folder (i'm not currently at my Mac so can't say which exactly, though i believe one is called "client"). You could try trashing them (or dragging them to the desktop).
Does the problem also happen if you log in to another account? Create a new account if necessary.
    /p

  • I have just upgraded to 10.6.7, and was browing the App. Store, I selected a product and it started to download, I cancelled the download, but it still registers in my purchases list, have I purchased that appl. and how can I cancel the purchase?

I have just upgraded to 10.6.7, and was browing the App. Store, I selected a product by mistake and it started to download, I cancelled the download, but it still registers in my purchases list, have I purchased that appl.? and how can I cancel the purchase in my purchases list?

I think that as soon as you click "Buy" and type in your details, the iTunes server is alerted that you have bought the item, even if it hasn't downloaded. Your "purchased" list is based on your account and not your computer so I'm afraid even if you haven't completed the download, you will be charged for it (but if you do now download it, you won't be charged again). This also means that you can't remove items from the purchased list.
Glad to be of help (I hope),
    Jonathan

  • Can't open jpg, preview.app does nothing

    Hi,
I am attempting to troubleshoot a minimac 10.4.10
I cannot open .jpg with preview.app (or tiff/gif ect.), which i assume is the default pic viewer.
when d-clicking on a jpg (whether downloaded or uploaded from a camera) the picture will not open.
the only thing it does is the very brief animation quick flash from icon to full screen like it will open except it doesn't.
i opened the task manager (or whatever its called in apple) and preview.app is not running.
it is only possible to view a pic with firefox, quicktime, or safari.
HELP! i have basic to moderate user knowledge of mac

    thanks for the responses!
i did a 'get info' on a pic and it does show the preview correctly (no thumnails anywhere is another problems as well)
it already has preview.app listed as the default app. i selected a different program and did a open with, and then switched the default back to preview.app and same problem.
*preview.app will not open period*. launching it by itself does nothing. i went to the applications folder and tried launching it from there and nothing. *It is still installed*. I did a 'get info' on it and it shows March 07 as the last time its been launched (approximate time of update to 10.4.10)
so i'm confident the problem is from the app not from the jpg files. It just won't launch.
is there anyway to reinstall it or something? uninstall/reinstall? dunno how to do this...
