Preview App printing problem

Running 10.6.8 on a Quad-Core PowerMac with Canon IP2600 printer via USB.
Thought I was running out of ink at first, but a closer look shows documents printed from Preview.app are printing only outlines of black characters and black graphics as if everything is in an outline font. At first it was the lower 2/3rds of the page, then 3/4s, now it's the entire page printing black in faint outlines only, very precise (while color logos print normally).
These docs are PNGs. The same PNG prints perfectly in Photoshop. So I created a doc in Photoshop with two thick, solid, vertical black lines; saved and printed as a PNG and as a JPEG, both print fine in Photoshop. When opened and printed in Preview, both print as a series of very thin rectangular outlines running down the page.
Started happening out of the blue a few days ago, so I trashed three Preview pref files (showing recent modification dates), restarted and nothing changed. Do I need to reinstall the app? Can't think of any recent changes that might've affected Preview or the printer, no updates or installs in the past few weeks. Preview displays onscreen as it's supposed to.....
Anybody have a clue what's going on here? The only other Preview.app printing problem I can find has to do with printer color profiles.....

Well..... duh!
The real mystery is why docs in Photoshop continued printing long after Preview had quit printing those SAME docs. Photoshop never did fail to print - but a new ink tank/print head solved the problem.
Good thing ya can't LOSE points for asking stupid questions, huh.

Strange Mail.app/print problem

Trying to print from Mail.app v. 2.1.2(753) to a Brother laser printer (HL-2040), sometimes only the header is printed, other times the whole message is printed. If I select Preview in the print dialog then click on Print it prints OK. This is a fairly recent problem. I suspect it first happened after upgrading to 10.4.11, but am not sure. I have repaired permissions, zapped PRAM, reinstalled the printer driver, restarted the computer, all with no change to the problem. I have not found any way to determine which messages will print OK and which will not. Others have suggested using a script to go through the Preview step every time, but that doesn't really fix the problem. There is no problem printing to an HP OfficeJet 7130xi, but that is slower and uses up expensive ink.

after taking a look at it, I found out that changing the Mail --> Preferences --> Accounts --> Advanced --> Keep copies of messages for offline viewing setting to either "All messages, but omit attachments" or "Don't keep copies of any messages", then trashing my ~/Libary/Mail/IMAP-<insert name of account here> folder and restarting Mail to force it to resync against my IMAP server prevented the problem from occurring again
I tested this in both Mail.app 2.1.1 and 2.5.3 and it worked for both. Hopefully it will work for you IMAP users out there. I tried it in Mail.app 3.1 (Leopard) and couldn't reproduce the problem (naturally).

Excel Print Preview and printing problems

After upgrading to Leopard, I get a blank page (same when I print) and MS Excel spreadsheet. Anyone else have this issue and what is the solution? Microsoft web site indicates an issue but there updates this month didn't do anything (same results).

Thanks for the advice here. I've had the same problem using Excel to print to a Brother MFC-440CN printer. Used the workaround described above, but also selected 'Options' in Page Setup and then selected 'Format for Brother MFC-440CN'. Changed the print resolution to 600 dpi and was then able to preview & print. However, the document had to be reformatted to print in landscape, not portrait. Glad to hear that MS are working on a fix as this could be a real pain if it continues too long!

Preview app won't print PDFs

Today I tried to print a PDF from the Preview app and it would not allow me to do so. If I selected print from the File menu or put in command+p the print preview box would not appear (e.g. layout, colour matching etc). It was working fine yesterday so I'm not sure what would have caused the problem.
I'm able to print web pages from Safari, so it must be to do with the Preview app...
Any help would be appreciated! If any further information is required please let me know and I will provide it as best as I can.

Thanks for all of the help! I've tried all of your suggestions but unfortunately they weren't successful. After a long time of copying and pasting text and trying to figure out what was wrong, it turns out the paper setting on the computer and printer didn't match the paper size I was using. The printer and computer were set to A4 US legal I think (the default) and the paper size I was using was standard A4.

Print problem. trying to print a document in Preview, the start of the text prints half way down the page not at the top of the page?

Print problems. Printing out an email the text starts half way down the page. I tried taking a picture of the text I wanted to print, tried to print from Preview and have the same problem. If anyone has any ideas I would really apreciate it. Thanks Penny

One more thing to check: System Preferences/Print & Scan. Make sure your printer is set as Default.
I'm using OS X 10.8 and I don't see Page Setup anymore. If you have access to Page Setup, check to see if there are any adjustments to make there.

Printing a zoomed view in Preview.app

How do you print a zoomed in view from Preview. In Adobe there is a choice to print current view. I cant figure out how in Preview.app.

You can select an area, crop to it and print that. If you do not want save the crop, do not save the file after you print.

Problem displaying characters from pdf file in Preview.app

I hope someone can help with this problem.
I have some issues with the display of pdf files on OSX. The problems are with ligatures like 'fl' which Preview.app displays incorrectly as 'oeu'. There are other symbols which Preview also displays incorrectly.
This problem is not affected by cleaning the font cache and as far as I can tell all the fonts are present and correct. I am guessing the problem has something to do with Preview finding a different version of the Times or TimesRoman font than Adobe Reader uses, and so it gets the wrong symbol, but I'm not sure.
How can I ensure that Preview uses the same fonts as Adobe Reader? and how can I get Preview to render my pdf's correctly?

My computer automatically open PDF inside the Safari
window, but I wish it would go back to opening it
externally via Adobe. (maybe we should trade
computers:-)

Safari, or external in Adobe?
This is what I would like to as well. I often have a lot of pdf files I need to open and then save to my hard drive. When I click on a pdf file on a website Safari opens it and then I need to right click in the document to open it with Adobe. How can I get it to open in Adobe the first time without having to right click after it opens in Safari?

Preview Default Print Setting "Fit to Page" Problem

Preview.app in Snow Leopard has removed the option to print without scaling, and recreating this behaviour with the remaining options is quite complex and requires 4 extra steps.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a document in Preview.app, such as a PDF, of a known paper size.
2. Select 'File' > 'Print…'
3. Change the paper size to one where the default scale value with the default 'Scale to Fit:' 'Print Entire Image' is not 100%. This step is often unnecessary, as many documents will require reduction to include margins, even if the paper sizes match.
4. Select 'Scale:'
5. Select the scale % value.
6. Delete the scale value.
7. Input '100' in the scale value box using the keyboard.
8. Press tab to avoid radar #7256827.
9. Click 'Print'
Expected Results:
Click on a single option to print at 100%, if by chance that wasn't the default option. This would have been one step.
Actual Results:
Does what it says. Steps 4 through 8 are necessary to print at 100% in most cases.
Regression:
This behaviour was as expected in OS X 10.5.x and previous versions, or we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Notes:
Printing at 100% is the only scaling that is common enough to warrant a button to make it an easy one to get to. Preview.app itself even has an 'Actual Size' toolbar button, but has removed this function for printing.
Graphic designers (and other professionals) or specific applications (such as printing on pre-cut or pre-printed paper, labels, or DVDs) can commonly require printing at 100%, and using PDF to distribute documents makes Preview.app the most logical choice for many printing jobs.
Having something other than 100% as a default can cause expensive media to be ruined by a mis-scaled printout, unless these 4 (+1) steps are followed every time.
Most other apps, including Safari, Mail.app and TextEdit default to no scaling, making Preview.app an exception.
I am an architect and this is really annoying!

I too am now sick of the amount of expensive paper I have wasted due to the Preview app default print setting of 'Scale to fit'.
- No option to print at 100%, you have to manually input this information.
- No way to change this default in preferences, you can change the opening viewing size of a doc to 100% though.
- Doesn't remember the previous settings if you decide to reopen the doc and print another copy.
I also found that if I attempted to print an A4 doc with bleed and crop marks, it would set the default paper size to A4 and the annoying scale to fit would be set to 83%. If I then changed the scale by typing in 100% but don't hit enter for fear of the print starting and then simply use the drop down to change the paper to A3 and then change the orientation and then hit enter it ignores that you have changed the scale and prints your doc at 83% on A3 - Brilliant!
It's a shame to say that I will be going back to acrobat for pdfs!
If you can't put a 100% scale radio button on the print dialogue box either allow people to change the default in prefs or even better allow the presets to control paper size and scale of printing!

Preview app retina resolution problems after Mavericks upgrade

Hi everyone!
after upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks, the Preview app (Version 7.0) stops working in Retina resolution.
For instance, a 2500pix graphics now does not fit in the monitor (2880x1800 pix native resolution) when displayed at actual size, i.e. 1 image pixel per 1 screen pixel. It is rendered at twice as low resolution.
As with the previous os x mountain lion, in Mavericks too I am using "Best (Retina)" screen resolution mode in the Display Preferences.
Any idea how to resolve this?
actually, I belive this is some sort of bug of the Preview app.

i have a solution!
well at least that worked for me.
It is nothing like a bug or software problem. It is just that after mavericks install for some reason i found a change in my Preview app preferences. So i set it correctly and now everything is back and working correctly.
Go to the Preview Preferences, then choose the "Images" section/tab, then choose "Size on screen equals size on printout" option, and thats it!
Try this out and I hope this works for you too!

Adobe Form Print Problem - Header is cut off without print preview

We are currently experiencing a problem when trying to print Adobe forms. We have created several forms and are experiencing the same issue with all forms. The issue occurs when we are trying to print a form. If we choose a print preview prior to printing, the form looks normal and prints fine. However, if we do a direct print (i.e. no print preview), then the top part of the form is cut off. It's almost like all of that data on the form gets shifted upward, cutting off about 1/2" to an 1" from the top of the form. We have tried printing to different printers and are ending up with the same results each time. We do not experience this issue with SAPScript.
I have searched several threads and haven't been able to find an issue quite like the one we are experiencing.
Has anyone ever exeperienced a problem like this before?
Currently using Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.1.2 and are on Netweaver 7.00 EhP1.

I am going to go ahead and close this thread as I believe we have found a solution. Sai is correct that there is an issue with the design.
If anyone else runs into this problem, take a look at note 968394 that talks about differences between print preview and printing from spool. When you are in the print preview dialog box, under "Page Scaling," the default is "Shrink to printable area." So if your form went outside the margins, it would shrink to fit giving you the impression that the problem is not with the print preview rather than the form itself.
After moving the header stuff down a bit everything is printing normal both through the spool and via print preview.

the problem is that i can preview my form but i can't print it out.
it seems to be problems with device type. I've already tried almost all device type but it still doesnot work.
Form property:
Preview Type: Print form only one side
XDP preview type: Acrobat 7 static
SPAD Configuration:
Output Device: Standard, PDF1
Host spool access method: F
Host Printer: _default
I am using Adobe Livecycle Designer 8.0 and adobe acrobat 8 professional.

There's no need of and no logic in "printing" generated PDF to your Adobe PDF printer which creates PDF files. Why do you want to do that if u already have PDF? If you need to save PDF use save button on Adobe Reader toolbar or built-in functions of SAP solution to return PDF from ADS and save it to server or locally.
At the same time, printing PDF to your HP printer makes sense. Pitty it is not working.
Try experimenting with device types. Maybe create new Output Device, and use some HP device type like HPLJ1100 for it?
As for PDF device type all I can add is just the config of my PDF1 device type (just in case).

Problem with Creative Cloud Connection Preview app Mac

I can't get the Creative Cloud Connection preview app to download on Mac OS 10.6.8. The option doesn't show up in AAM and I keep bouncing back and forth on the website when I click Learn More. Is there something I'm doing wrong or not doing? I've got files in Creative Cloud that I can access through the website, but it's a real pain to have to download/upload every time I want to work on them.
I've attached a screenshot of AAM and the desktop app doesn't show up.
Anyone else experience problems with this?

Mavericks and Preview app problem

Hi!
Yesterday I updated my iMac 27" (Intel i5, 4Gb RAM) and MacBook Air (2010) to Mavericks and noticed significant slowdown working with Preview app and RAW photos.
Preview loads photos very slowly partly covering photos with black color. This problem is on both my Macs.
I even reinstalled Mavericks completely on my Mac. Also I tried to remove Preview preferences. This didn't work. I installed Camera Raw update - no use.
In the latest 10.8 everything worked smoothly and fast. In Mavericks... it is not. I'm very upset...
Does anyone have such problems?
If there is no solution at the moment how to downgrade back to 10.8?
By the way, I noticed that Mavericks uses all of my RAM all the time. Is it normal?

Interestingly, when you go to Feedback, when you get to OS X applications, Preview isn't even listed!! Maybe it's because the changes under Mavericks have turned a previously easy application to use into a disaster area. Perhaps they don't want to hear the feedback?
1. No more crop button for the edit toolbar.
2. No more save as, or save all options under File drop down menu.
3. Some genius changed save as to export... only took me a week to figure that out!
4. When opening 7-10 jpg's to edit, various problems occur:
     a. cropping and then adjusting picture size often results in adjusting size change not being saved.
     b. after this happens on one picture, trying to adjust size on another picture doesn't work.
     c. repeated attempts causes Preview to freeze up and you have to quit the application.
     d. when reopening the same pics after reopening preview they appear in 2 or 3 windows instead of the                    original 1 window.
     e. the same problems may repeat themselves trying to edit all 10 pictures.
What used to take 4-5 minutes to do before Mavericks, now can take 10 minutes or more. Did anyone test Preview 7.0 before it was released???

Printing problems Desket 3520 - says i can only print from apps

So frustrating.
Since upgrading to Window 8.1 I have nothing but print problems, despite unistalling and reinstalling. Now when I try to print,when I click on the print icon (that comes up from the swipe side bar) i get a message saying I can only print from apps. So I have been unable to print word docs etc of any kind. The printer works fine from my iphone and ipad and the laptop can see the printer wirelessly and connects to it - BUT IT WONT PRINT!! I've had to resort to emailing the docs to myself to print from my ipad - ridiculous!
WHAT is happening HP? I use an HP laptop and HP printer for a REASON, compatibilty. NOT SO since the update.
Please can someone send me an easy fix for this frustrating problem. 'Ive tried everything and I'm fairly computer savvy.

Hey there @lissim09 welcome to the forums
I am not quite sure why your Windows 8.1 is not printing to your Deskjet 3520 however, I have some ideas to try and find out and hopefully get it printing for you. The printer is working with other devices, which shows us the printer itself is alright.
Run the Print and Scan Doctor. This diagnostic tool will check for any conflicts that could be causing the issue. The tool will show you a report at the end. If there was a problem that the tool could not fix, you will notice it in the results. Please send me the results.
Also try a Clean Boot, restart the PC and try a print again. This will turn off all start up programs running on your PC, in the case there is something running that is blocking the printer from printing, this should bypass it. Also disable your firewall temporarily.
Try printing from two programs afterwards.
Also include how you have the printer connected to the PC (wireless, ethernet, usb).
