Preview Area problem.

Hi there. The very first time I used lightroom 5, I didn't have any problems importing pictures from a memory card. After downloading some presets that I bought online, (I don't know it has something to do with it) I can't see the pictures on the preview area anymore. Please help. Thank you.

Why is my preview area showing only greyed out boxes instead of photos?

I am unable to import my photos so they can be seen. Whether I try to import them from the hard drive, camera card, or my desktop (following the tutorial), I do not see photographs in the preview area, only greyed out boxes instead of photos. If I imported 6 photos, I have six greyed out (photo-sized) boxes. The specific photos are there somehow, becuase they are properly named when I scroll the mouse over them, but I see only flat grey, no pictures. As I said, this happens even when I follow the tutorial and import from my desktop.

I appreciate you responding to my inquiry. We (that would be the "royal" we, which would be my husband) finally determined that the monitor was not configured properly. "We" discovered this out after uninstalling and reinstalling Lightroom several times.
To answer your question, I was trying to import both photos taken in JPEG, as well as RAW, both were problematic. I could import no images. It was interesting that I could tell all of the data was coming over (when I floated the cursor over a grayed-out box I could read the data), just not the images.
I have a Nikon D5100. I purchased Lightroom 5.0 just before now(two days ago), and was trying to install and play with it. I upgraded to 5.2 as I was going into it for the first time (it is an automatic question). I knew there was obviously a problem when I couldn't see any images. Particularly when I went into the tutorials -- it just reemphasized that something was wrong. Who ever thinks of how their monitor is configured?????

Previews are splotchy

Hello, I've been having trouble with Lightroom for awhile. I have a Sony Vaio laptop which is fairly new, my old one died, but I used Lightroom 2 on it with no problems for a long time. I'm not sure if the trouble started with this new laptop or not, I can't remember but I just upgraded to Lightroom 4 and I'm still having this problem. My problem is that the dark areas of my photos in the previews are splotchy, for a lack of a better word word. I can view the image in Picasa and it looks fine, if I export it as a jpg from Lightroom it's also fine. I've tried deleting previews, optimizing the catalog, changing various settings, but nothing seems to work. I've also tried changing various display settings on my laptop but I have yet to find an answer. Here's a screenshot of what I'm talking about. Instead of a nice green gradient behind the flower, it's very pixelated and splotchy. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I always suspect a broken monitor profile when I see something like that. AFAIK Picasa isn't color managed and just ignores the monitor profile, so it wouldn't be affected.
Is it calibrated in any way? If so, recalibrate. I've no idea what sort of monitor profile a Sony Vaio would set up as default, but you can try to replace it with sRGB (if it isn't already) and see if that clears it up. Go to Control Panel > Color Management > Devices. It should look like this:
But to be clear, the proper way to do this is to use a calibrator to make a new custom profile. Even though a laptop screen is never ideal for image editing, calibration should improve things.
EDIT: I see you have PS CS4 there too. Does it behave the same way?

Photoshop Elements 9 prints and Previews are blank

Recently installed Elements (not the trial, the paid version) on a new MacBook Pro, and it not only won't print, the Print Preview is blank. Wondering if it was the document, so I created a new document with Elements, painted a few strokes, and tried printing again. Same result. The Print Preview is blank. The thumbnail of the image DOES show up in the Print dialog box. I re-installed the software. I deleted and re-installed the printer. I restarted the computer. All other apps are able to print, and Preview app is able to print the same documents that Elements will not print. I've been doing IT for years, and I've never seen anything like this. Any suggestions?

I may have just found a solution. In the print dialog box, under more options, colour management...if i leave the Colour Handling to Photoshop and change Printer Profile to Apple RGB or to my Printer colour profile then I could print. However, colour is off although it looked nice in print preview. So, instead I downloaded ICC Colour Profile for Mac from adobe and change back the Printer Profile to Adobe RGB(1998) which is same as above Image Space profile.
And I am quite satisfied with the print output.

Anyway, my printer is Canon MG5240. After reading your thread, I installed updated driver from Apple (printer driver for Mac) and when still cannot print, I called a canon rep here and asked about it and he said to go into canon website only. So I loaded driver from Canon website which also didn't seem to change anything. When I was using Elements 9 trial version i did not have problem printing from the software.

My thumbnail previews are all horizontal in bridge

All of my thumbnail previews are horizontal in bridge - this is a new problem. I'm using CS5. Previously they were previewing just fine. If I go through each folder and reapply my metadata, the previews correct themselves, but I shouldn't have to do this every time I use bridge. I've searched through preferences and can't find a solution. Any ideas?

Let it be some comfort to you that almost everybody (including me) can say the same...
Maybe I'm just using it much more than I used to.
That should not matter but unfortunately it seems related. Compared to Tai Lao I seem to have very clean work because I don't need to wash my hands that often but it is a fact that Cache is still not easy to manage.
Luckily each new version seems to handle cache in a better way but I have to admit that every now and then I also start with a fresh empty cache folder to avoid problems. In CS3 this was about every 4 to 6 weeks but in CS5 I only do it a few times a year depending on the size the cache file has grown.
I use cache a lot and mostly the size of my cache file is 25 GB +. Every now and then I use Compact Cache. Just tried it again and the current 43 GB size was reduced to 29 GB but that is still a lot of space. Hence some 'spring cleaning' every now and then.

Lightroom 4.2 can not startup preview cache problem

I think you probably need to delete your previews. Lightroom will then launch and re-generate your previews (which will take a while if you have a lot of photos).
Your previews are located in a folder ending with Previews.lrdata, and this previews folder is in the same folder as your LR catalog.

1 image in preview area & in Project it shows (120)

I'm sorry for the duplicate post but my question wasn't answered. I show (120) in one of my Projects but in preview area only 1 image. It's not stacked and I did an update preview and could hear the HD working for about 3 minutes but still only 1 preview. Someone else had a similar problem but the fixes suggested didn't help me.

Any qualification you write into the search box of any view remains there and remains specific to that view. So you can do lots of work in other views and forget that you have a tiny tag mark, say, sitting in the search box from long ago. They do not automatically reset which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your needs.
I guess the way to guard against that happening again is to remember how it works

Nikon D600 previews are blurred

I am using Lightroom 4.3 and find that the previews are blurred. However, the images look sharp after I import them. Is anyone else having this problem? The previews are sharp when using my previous camera, a Fuji S5.

Howard is right, but there is one caveat: the DNG converter also needs to be updated for the new camera.
This issue solely exists because camera manufacturers insist in using a proprietary format that needs to be decoded.
Would they be using the free and open DNG format in camera, like Leica, Pentax, Hasselblad, Ricoh, your images could be opened on the day your puchased your camera in hundreds of programs, even in old versions such as Photoshop CS1. I've seen a preview of the D600, where it was stated that even Nikon's converters were not updated for the new camera at time of writing!
You will need to save the NEF files, create JPEGs alongside, and wait until Adobe Camera Raw gets updated (if you are using CS6) or the DNG converter (if using CS5 or earlier) to process the NEF files.

Avoiding preview stuttering problems

I am creating a new post here as I marked the last one I posted on this subject as answered.
In that post I asked would a new graphics card help to eliminate the severe stuttering caused by my windows xp machine (2 intel P4 processors 3.2) failing to decompress the MP4 files from my Sony NEX-5 quickly enough? The answer was an unequivocal NO as it was the processors, not the card.
Since then I have been doing some experimentation:
I downloaded trial versions of Cyberlink Power Director and Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10. The latter stuttered worse than PE but the Cyberlink app had almost faultless previews - no stuttering. Unfortunately it is a pretty horrible programme otherwise, and any case I am used to Premiere having use an early version of PP for years, so I experimented some more:
In PE I created a project with a project setting of PAL-AVCHD-HD 1081i25, loaded some MP4 clips taken with theNEX 5 on the MP4 1440 x 1080 setting and then burnt the project to DVD.
I then saved the movie as an AVI, removed the original MP4 clips and imported the AVI file I had just made. The project asked me if I wanted to change the project settings to match the clip and and I said yes. I then burned this to a DVD.
I then deleted the AVI clip and imported the original MP4 clips (into what is now effectively a PAL-DV-Widescreen 48KHz project setting I imagine). This time I was not asked if I wanted to change the settings but a red line appeared above the clips indicating they needed rendering. I rendered them and - voila! No stuttering - perfectly smooth preview of the MP4 clips. I then burned this to DVD.
Next I compared the DVDs on a Sony 42inch HD TV. No difference! All three of very good quality, at least to my eyes..
So what is happening here? When I rendered the clips in the PAL DV project was it turning them into AVI files because of the project settings? And is it that the first DVD (with the MP4 clips straight from the camera), which I would have expected to be of better quality than the other two, was not actually producing a HD DVD inspite of the camera and project setting?
Is the only way I am going to get true HD to set the camera to AVCHD and burn to Blu-Ray?
If any one has knowledge of these things I would love to hear from you as while I seem to have found an answer to the stuttering I would love to know what is going on and if I am fooling myself. Many thanks.

I have not explained myself very well.
There is no problem with the DVDs - whatever settings I use to edit, the DVDs play very well, smooth and reasonably high quality in my estimation..
And as far as I know there is no interlacing going on as I am not using the camera's highest avchd setting (which is interlaced), only the 1440x1080 MP4.
The problem is with the editing previews, which when I open an HD project and import my MP4 camera files is very jerky to the point of being almost unusable at times, with long waits during operations. A look in Window Task Manager shows both CPUs maxing out all the time. According to the reply I had from an earlier post, this is because my CPUs are not up to the job of decompressing the MP4 files on the fly.
What I have found is that if I import my MP4 files into a project with DV settings, I get a red line above the timeline. If I then render the clips, the editing improves dramatically - no stuttering at all and no long waits after mouse clicks or key presses and the CPUs only working at about 50%. Of course it can take a while to render a number of clips, but I can go and do something else while that is happening and when I return the editing goes like clockwork.
My question is - what is happening to the quality of the video? I cannot see any difference in output (DVDs) whatever project settings I use, they all seem equally good. So hopefully I have found an answer to the preview stuttering problem. But I suspect I am not getting real HD from any of them. To do this I imagine I need to set the camera to AVCHD rather than 1440x1080 MP4 and burn to Blu-ray. This I have not tried yet as I do not have a Blu-Ray burner.
My problem is my ignorance of what PE is doing to the MP4 files when it renders them. And why, if I set the project settings to HD 1080i25 instead of PAL DV and work directly on the unrendered MP4 clips (and put up with the stuttering) do I not see a visible increase in quality when I burn the DVD? Is there some sort of levelling going on during the DVD coding?

Is there a way to use the drop zones as a preview area for highlighted video

I'm making a fairly simple dvd menu, using the centre stage theme Title Page and I was wondering if there was anway to use the drop zone as a preview area for the highlighted video.

It is at least possibly to use some buttons like this - But to get this right I had to make special button movies from the big original movie.
My problem started when I used the original movie that I could not go back far enough for the last buttons and not precise enough either - so by making the small button movies I got 100% control.

Disabled video in Capture Preview area

I just added a MacBook Pro as an in-the-field companion to my G5 for HDV video. With the MacBook Pro, I am also using an external drive (LaCie/FW800). I set all the device preferences to match my G5 and the Sony Z1U cameras I use.
But when I go to capture on the MacBook Pro, I do not see any video in the Capture Preview area - no picture, no black, no bars, just gray. The controls work and it does actually capture the video/audio but I have to use the camera's LCD screen to watch when I'm doing it.
I've read some posts on the forum that seem to indicate that there is a problem with the MacBook Pro when you are using both a FW400 from the camera and a FW800 to an external drive.
Anybody found any solutions?

I have the same problem with a Canon XM2 connected to the FireWire400-Port and a Pleiades FireWire 800 Harddrive connected to the FireWire800-Port of my MacBook Pro. I read in a French forum, that you mustn't use FireWire800-HDs while capturing video at the FireWire400-Port.
Indeed I could work with the XM2 without the HD connected.
But I also have an old Sony PCR-100 that works great together with the FireWire800-HD.
So it's not a general bug of the two FireWire-ports but a bug with the software-support of my Canon-Camera.
Is there any way to report bugs to Apple? A few years ago there was a page that I can't find anymore. Or aren't they interested in bugs anymore?

Preview area in slow motion

I have a copy of Premiere Elements 4.0 which I have been using for quite a while and I have run across a new problem that I have never run into before. I was working on a new project when suddenly my preview area started showing everything in slow motion (complete with slowed sound) and I can't seem to get it back. Even with starting a new project and rendering the work area.
The video size I'm working with is standard YouTube size 760 x 620. It is an HD file too.
My computer specs:
Windows Vista Pro
Dual Intel Quad Cores 2.3 a head
16 gig RAM
NVidia GTX 680 MaxCore 55 (1 gig)
1.2 tb avaible HDD space
If anyone can tell me why it suddenly decided to do this, I'd be greatly thankful.

Before the service reset function. Wait 24 hours to activate imessage.

go to the settings and turn off imessage
but that don't change the issue that you will never be able to facetime eachtoher
the appleID is really meant as the handle that identify you it was not meant to be shared
but can see that people may want to do not buy apps more then once

I have put a lot of work into a docx document on my Mac, but now can't open it as it gives the error message: 'the Open XML file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details, Unspecific
error, Location: 2'
When opening the original file the message said: 'this file contains word 2007 for Windows equations' etc. but I managed to track changes fine, and saved, closed and re-opened it numerous times without problem. Some graphs seemed moved, and various formulas
were illegible, but no other weirdness was observed.
I have microsoft 2008 installed on my Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
I've tried to fix it using various solutions suggested here, but am afraid am too IT illiterate to have had any luck, please help I'm new to all this!

This issue is related strictly to oMath tags and occurs when a graphical object or text box is anchored to the same paragraph that contains the equation.
Please use the "Fix it" tool in the following KB article to resolve the problem. See:
