  • On a Mac I want to use Preview as default to read PDF's, and Firefox won't let me use anything but Adobe Reader. How to change?

It had been working properly until recently. I have tried the usual setting in firefox>preferences>applications. It accepts Preview as default, but uses Adobe anyway. If I set it to Ask, it does ask me, and when I tell it to use Preview it uses Adobe.
Desired default operation is download PDF's and open with Preview.

The file that stores your preferences for how to open downloads is named mimeTypes.rdf. Since it has a somewhat inscrutable format, the usual remedy is to rename it and have Firefox generate a new one.
Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using
Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Show in Finder" button
Leaving Finder open, switch back to Firefox and Quit
Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename '''mimeTypes.rdf''' to something like mimeTypes.old
Restart Firefox and reselect your preference. Any improvement?

  • Preview has defaulted to 2 page view, how do I change it?

My Preview has defaulted to 2 page view, how do I change so that it opens PDFs in single page view?
Obviously I can do this every time I open pdf but that's crazy. I can't seem to find any preference files to delete.
    Preview Version 4.2 (469.5)
    Any ideas ?
thanking you very much in advance...

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
If nobody comes up with an easy adjustment, when Preview is not loaded, go into your library/preferences and rename com.apple.preview.plist and com.apple.preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist. Bring up Preview and you should be back to it's basic defaults, as it will recreate those files when it loads. If everything is OK, go back and drag the renamed files to the trash.

  • How do I choose Preview as default over Adobe Reader?

Once you update one thing . . . can of worms.  How do I choose preview as default over Adobe Reader?
Here's why I want to change the default viewer, in case anyone has ideas: When I updated to Reader X (as required by some of our industry-specific programs) my Quickbooks Online financial program no longer prints in either Safari or Firefox.
I called QB and they said they only support Reader 9.3. Uninstalled Reader X, tried install 9.3. No go--isn't compatible with Mac OS 10.6.7. Gave QB my "thoughts" on their not being up to speed with Reader updates . . .
So, maybe changing to Preview as the default reader will work. Adobe 10 has overruled Preview.
How do I set the preference to go back to Preview?
    Any help appreciated, thanks.

  • Making Preview the default pdf reader

For some reason, some pdf files try to open with Safari as the default reader. The only way I can use Preview in this instance is to save the file, then I get an option to open with preview.
How do I make Preview the default reader for pdf files?

the Change All option is greyed out.Sounds like you don't have the proper permissions. Under "Ownership & Permissions,be sure you can "Read & Write and under "Details" that you are the owner. Group is Staff and Others can read only.
If this is correct, then try toggling the "Open with" to another app and then back again to see if "Change All" will become active.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to run "Repair Permissions" in Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • Make preview the default for opening .pdf

I can't open a document in Preview (when I try an iCloud screen shows up).  So I want to make Preview my default .pdf reader and open the doc by clicking on it's title.  But I don't know how to do that.

    Hi jackoett,
Go into your Documents or Downloads in your Finder and find a PDF file and click on it to select it (not to open it). Then click on "File" in the top menu and select "Get Info". You will see a dropdown like this:
As you can see, it currently says "Open With" Adobe Reader. Click on the little arrows to the right to see your other options:
    Select "Preview"
Right below the dropdown, you will see an option to "Change All" - click on this, and you will get the following warning:
If you do want to open all future PDF docs with Preview, click Continue. If you ever want to change it back, (or just change one of them to Adobe Reader), just follow the same steps.

  • Making Preview the Default App for .pdf Files

When I click on a .pdf file (such as one attached to an e-mail) it now opens in Acrobat Reader; it formerly opened in Preview (which I preferred). I don't recall making any changes and wondered if the "Preview as default" was changed in the recent OSX update. Can I set a preference somewhere to again have .pdf docs opened in Preview?

    Hello,
To open a document with a specific application:
In the Finder, select the document and choose File > Get Info.
In the Info window, click to show the "Open with" pane.
Choose the application you want to use from the pop-up menu.
If you want ALL documents that have the same file type as this one to open with the same application, click Change All.

  • How do I make Preview my default PDF viewer?

When viewing saved PDF files I prefer Preview to Adobe Reader 7.07 because it is easier to make the print larger. Preview used to be the default, but when I updated to Adobe 7.07 it became the default viewer. How do I choose and set my default PDF file viewer?

    Hello,
The quickest way to make Preview your default PDF viewer is to:
    1) Get Info on a PDF file.
    2) Under open with, select Preview.
    3) Click change all.
Now all PDF files will open with Preview by default.

  • Make Preview the Default Reader

I use the Finder to access an ensemble of research documents having different formats - many are pdf's. For reasons of speed and ease of use, I much favor Preview over the Adobe Reader. Unfortunately, whenever I click a pdf file in the Finder, the file is read by the Adobe Reader.
My question: How do I go about making Preview my default reader when I access a document via the Finder?
    Thanks for your help.

select a pdf file in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup window go to "open with section". select "Preview" to open it and click on "change all".

  • Changed to Adobe instead of Preview as default by mistake. How can I fix that?

On my macbook Pro by mistake I changed from Adobe to Preview as default viewer. How can I change back to Preview default?

    Hi there,
Select a document that you would like to open by default with Adobe (Photoshop?), hold the Command Key & "I". Once the window appears, from the "Open With" option, select the Application you would like to open those kind of documents with.

  • How to set preview as default pdf viewer from itunes?

I recently installed acrobat CS3 on my mac and it has taken over the duty of being the default reader anytime i open a pdf. However i must prefer Preview, just because it is a million times faster when all you want to do is view the file.
I have managed to disable acrobat dominance over pdfs from safari but i cannot seem to find a way to set it so that my music booklets open in preview again and not acrobat.
Please help, as i have a big presentation tomorrow about podcasting and i wanted to demonstrate the seemless nature of macs!!!!
    cheers

  • HT2506 how do I make preview the default reader when I open a file? I just installed Icloud and Microsoft word and excel are still the default.

I just installed icloud. Afterwards I am having trouble opening files becasue Microsoft excel and word aren't working now. How do I change the default to preview to open files?

Do I have to do this for each file?
When someone sends me a file created in Excel, can my computer default to opening it wit Numbers?
Thanks, your fix worked for the individual file.

  • How do I make Preview the default instead of Adobe Reader?

When Adobe Reader is installed it makes itself the default and then doesn't provide you anyway to change it that I know of. I tried uninstalling Adobe Reader but then realized that that is the only way to view PDFs from a web browser and therefore had to reinstall it.

Find a PDF on your computer...
Right click it and choose "Get Info".
Under the "Open with:" section, choose Preview.
Then click the button below that says "Change All..."
Now all your PDFs will open with Preview.

  • How to set Preview as Default instead of Adobe Reader

How can I set Preview as the default application for PDF files instead of Adobe Reader?

Go to a PDF file and selected it. Either "File"- "Get Info" in the menu bar or press Cmd-I. This will give you a pop up screen where you have an section called "Open with".  Go there, select Preview as the application to open the document with, press the "Change All" button and confirm.
