Preview Brushes / Patterns / Fonts...
Hey all,
Bridge is a wonderfull tool for me, almost like iTunes for Graphic Designers. But I can't understand, why some important filetypes are not supported like .abr, .pat, .asl, .tff and all other font types. Most of them are developed by Adobe itself and should be at least supported at their own Applications.
Do you know some workarounds or plugins, which make Bridge more powerful and enables preview support for these filetypes?
Greetings,
SaraSira
Not a computer expert, but to open those images in Bridge would probably require quite a bit of code to intrepret and display each one.
Each one of those special files are relying on the native program to do this and there probably has been no thought that anyone would want to view in Bridge.
At least that is my opinion.

Brush, Pattern, Font, Custom Shape Tool, gradient, etc organization
On record, I have over 1,000 brushes, over 1,000 fonts, and I'm making other resources on the fly. I have an issue here: I can't find anything!!
(I also have a second issue with resources and crashes, but I'll get to that later.)
Is it that hard to ask Adobe to put in some font organization, tags for brushes and a search engine for them? Sometimes it's a pain trying to find the right font, but say, I think, "Hmm.. I want a font that is remotely Western, probably serif" there is no way in Adobe Photoshop to get through all of those fonts in a timely manner which means I'm spending about 2 hours shuffling through the fonts trying to find the right one. Sure there is a panel where you can select your favorite ones, but that's not by category... there is no sane way to find the font just for you.
Same thing for brushes. Often the problem with brushes is that people lose where they've come from, meaning no credit to the brush maker and when you want, say, fairies because you need some, you can't remember where the hell they are. And if you do, you have tons of brushes to sort through. People have a compulsion to not label their brush sets properly, which drives me nuts because they also expect you to give them credit. How about Adobe gives them a leg up? Give them a space not only to name the brush, but give it tags, a name and a website where it was found at. (Not required, but can be used or even expanded down.) And give it search capability. (So I type in birds, then the brushes menu retrofits to show all brushes with the tag of birds, I delete the search line, all the brushes come back, I type in standard. All of the round brushes come up, etc. I type in spiritsighs and all of her brushes come up... and so on). Gradients, etc should be the same.
Sure you can clear your brushes, but do you know how many brush packs I have to sort through, then load to get the right one? --;; A pain. (Plus brush packs are often lost in computer crashes, harddrive wipes, etc.)
So I'm asking for a way to organize and find these resources more easily, with better searching abilities, because while the guys on Photoshop TV can afford to dump their probably thousands of brushes for a demo, isn't it kind of odd that they often say, "Where is it? "Ah there it is" in their tutorials? They've apologized at least a dozen times for the "ah there it is" and the "I'm sorry Adobe doesn't give a font organizer", but here is a crappier alternative.
I'd like this in other programs in the CS suite too. Especially the Historyless Illustrator (Illustrator needs History) and InDesign. InDesign should have had font management a long time ago--most of it is about type setting anyway.
Second part:
Crashes. You've spent 2 hours making the right brush, stayed past your bedtime, made the brush, and voila, Photoshop crashes. You've just lost 2 hours of work, your files, which in your artistic daze you forgot to save and any chance of getting that brush file back.
So I propose three fixes which are already out there in Computer land that Photoshop hasn't implemented. (And other Adobe products should also implement).
1. The auto save. When the user isn't using the screen, or at x intervals it will ask the user if they want to save, which is settable by the user (prompting and the auto-saving). Microsoft has it, Most Mac programs have it, Adobe Photoshop should also have it.
2. Generated back up files. At some intervals, instead of a full save, in case of a crash, Adobe Photoshop, when prompted will create back up files.
3. A way for Photoshop and Illustrator when creating brushes, etc to auto-save said brush when the brush is created, rather than generating a pack. Like it updates a file in Photoshop when one creates a brush. This means it will hard save to the computer and one doesn't have to make a brush pack or shut down photoshop to get the brush to save. I think this would save a lot of people heartbreak.
Minor peeve, but when I hit undo often it jumps to the previous layer I was at. I'd like an option to turn this "feature" off.not sure if anybody mentioned this.
tumasoft.com has a product for viewing and organizing your brushes patterns etc. 25 bucks.
This should be native to Photoshop rather than from an external program. It's in many other programs,so I don't understand why Photoshop doesn't have a system native to it.
To be blunt: If that has happened more than once to you and you still don’t save useful, newly created brushes regularly you should, in my opinion, improve your workflow.
Saving a brush into a set should be doable in something like 15 seconds, less if you use Keyboard Shortcuts.
Even less than that if one automates the task with a Script (which could then be invoked either via a Keyboard Shortcut or Configurator Panel).
Let me know if you want to give it a try.
You misunderstand me. I save the brush into the brush panel, and I may have the brush in up and working, but to save the brush permanently, you have one of these options:
1. Quit Photoshop between each brush made. The Save Brush Preset was NOT a permanent solution. It should be automatically saved to a file. Such as "all". Illustrator has a similar feature, though this really needs to be streamlined for Illustrator as well.
2. Save as a brush pack. However, if you have a bunch of brushes planned, this becomes a pain to do. This means out of say the 100 brush packs you have to find it every single time and add it and even if Photoshop crashes, the brushes you saved won't show up in the brush menu, because Photoshop doesn't remember any of the brushes you made until you quit Photoshop. This means then, if you're in the middle of making a brush and Photoshop crashes, you have to bring up said brush pack.
Do you really make brushes? 'cause I do. I make lots of brushes and it annoys me to no end that when I save the brush to the brush panel it's not a permanent save, but temporary. It should be permanent and I shouldn't have to shut down Photoshop to get it to save automatically to the Photoshop Brush palette.
I spend a lot of time refining my brushes by testing them, making them, and then testing them again. When I get the brush perfect, and find that something big has happened, I expect the brushes I saved to the brush palate should have saved permanently. But test it... You can force quit Photoshop, after saving to a brush to the brush palate and find that it's not at the end of the brush palate anymore. This is wacky and should be fixed. I view it as an internal bug rather than a "feature" i.e. something they didn't think about when they gave users the ability to create their own brushes. This is very programable as other programs can do it and as you pointed out it, it is minor. Especially with the advent of workable backup files, it has become ten times easier. Since Photoshop remembers on shut down, it may be even more minor--just shifting some code from the shut down process to the "save to Brush palate" process. I wouldn't mind say 5-10 seconds more of waiting while it saves if the save ends up in a permanent save.
But as for organizing Brush Presets and Brush-name search capabilities Photoshop could indeed do with some improvements. (I still work with CS4, so I don’t know what changes exactly CS5 brought in that respect.)
Fonts on the other hand … I suspect the risks connected with implementing any expanded font-capabilities in Photoshop may be significant.
Font organizers already exist. And programs have implemented them with success without hindering the work flow. I'm proposing this in addition to the "favorites" and the type-in pull down menu, not instead of it. As there are working examples, I doubt it will be that difficult to mock up. This isn't like a new fangled idea--so making it isn't as difficult. It should have been in In Design a long, long time ago... All the Adobe Products need one. I wouldn't even mind if it was an external program that worked with the suite. (Similar to Font Book for Mac with the Coco Products) -
Add and Group Graphic Styles, Brushes, Patterns to Libraries - Request
The addition of cloud Libraries is fantastic; currently dragging any object in a library to a new document brings anything in that object such as appearances, graphic styles, brushes, patterns, etc., into that document along with it. Great!
I'm submitting a feature request that would evolve the libraries to allow for dragging brushes, pattern swatches, graphic styles, etc., into the Library of choice, allowing the designer to include all of these in a project library, for example. It would also be great to be able to group these together, or sort them, possibly into sub-folders if someone chooses. It would save a step of having to drag an object containing those elements onto the artboard, plus the user would be able to view distinct elements associated with a project (brushes, styles, etc.) for a more top level view of what pre-styled elements have been saved to the libraries. Thanks!
cheers,

Can installing too many extra's (fonts, brushes, patterns) slow PS CS6?
My question is as simple as the title says, Can installing too many extra goodies slow the performance of Photoshop CS6? If so, what is the best strategy for handling all of the extra, sometimes critically needed, goodies. For someone like myself that likes to be extra prepared and ready for all situations, having to mitigate how many and which goodies i have installed is quite a dilemma. I enjoy working as efficiently as possible and if having to be weary of overloading my fonts and other goodies is a problem then i would like to know how the rest of you Designers handle such situations. Load and unload sets of brushes, fonts and others as the project dictates? That doesn't seem very efficient!
What say you?
The reason i ask is the i just did a fresh install onto a new SSD and after adding a bunch of goodies i realized that PS-CS6 was having terrible LAG. It was very sluggish with almost 5-8 seconds delay per click or action. I then got an error missing MSVCRT10.dll after a restart. I then uninstalled all of the fonts i had installed the day before and tested a few plugins which crashed the program. After removing all of the trouble plugins and having the fonts down to only about 200 things got better but now i have no idea if it was just the plugins or if it was the 9000 fonts i had installed. Some were variations of base fonts like italic, Bolc, condensed etc.

Preview and Adobe fonts problem/missing in PDF
I have a PDF document that doesn't show some fonts. The PDF was displaying fine on preview and then all of the sudden the next day it got messed up. I didn't performed any update or installed any new app. The problem persists in both Preview app and Adobe Reader; at least Adobe tells me: "Cannot find or create the font 'BYGBIR+Helvetica-12-0'. Some characters may not display or print correctly." Here's a screen shot of what it looks like.
L Huffman,
First of all, Welcome to the Discussions!
Try to select one of files in question by clicking once and then press the key combo command + i or go to the File menu and select Get Info.
Once the Get Info pane is open drop down (if not already in the open position) the disclosure triangle next to "Open with:" and change the application that will open "this" file. To change all files of the type make sure to click on the "Change All" button.
That should do it....post back if that is not what you are trying to do.

Preview not displaying fonts correctly - Only question marks
I'd like to report a problem we are experiencing viewing or printing the PDFs using Preview.
We receive regularly PDF files from one of our clients that are created using PDF-XChange (on Windows Computers). The files are on PDF standard 1.4 and include the font Calibri (embedded on the PDF file and also installed on my MacBook Pro)
On opening the files (in Lion) in Preview app. I only see question marks instead of the text.
However these PDFs open correctly using Adobe Reader on the same machines. The files also display correctly on iPhone, iPad, windows PCs, and on other Macs running Snow Leopard. This problems started to happen after we migrated to Lion (we could, and still can, open the files on macs running snow leopard).
In Preview.app I can copy the "question marks" and past in text edit, where they do appear correctly!Well I found a few minor font problems which seem to have cropped up since the last system upgrade, but none of those were the font in question. Also, as I understand it, the whole point of PDF documents is that the fonts are embedded in the document so you do not have to have the fonts installed on your computer to view the PDF properly. I use a lot of special fonts and when I save documents as a PDF I can send them to anyone on the internet and they can usually see everything as it is meant to be.

Preview screwing up fonts in pre-existing document
Preview is wreaking havoc with pdf documents by substituting fonts and deleting characters from the beginnings of occasional lines. This substitution takes place on saving a file after collecting together, or removing, unwanted pages.
The pdf files are all from other machines -- some created by me, most from various authors and publishers -- and all have embedded fonts that display without problems at first. Almost none of these fonts are installed where this problem occurs so this issue may differ from the other font problem threads.
On the other hand, maybe it has the same root cause because Acrobat Pro is now complaining about some files too, sometimes that it cannot extract the font, and replaces body and footnote characters with periods. Somehow the large characters survive with 'only' a typeface change.
Typically it will be the headers and a few bits of the footnotes affected. All in the same typeface, and often substituted into something like Univers bold but with the same spacing as the original font, making it not just unpresentable but also illegible.
Is there perhaps a save or font encoding preference that needs to be re-set?
These files opened and edited just fine not long ago, in both Preview and Acrobat Pro.Exactly the same thing has just started happening to me, in the last two days. Except the files are not all from other machines.
I just spent 4 hours doing an archive and install on the system. Reinstalling what I thought were damaged fonts. Then removing and reinstalling Acrobat. And even removing Suitcase, which can do random odd things from time to time.
After all the detective work... it seems the problem is with Acrobat. But I don't have a solution for you. I'm tearing my hair out. Can't create invoices for clients!! -
Print out different from print preview (for THANGSAN font)
Save Our Environment. Save Yourself.
Hi Experts!!
I have created a smartform and print program which should actually print some Thai characters and English characters too. I created a smartstyle and have some 10 paragraph formats and are all have THANGSAN font. So, I am printing all the thai and english characters in THANGSAN font only.
When print preview is seen, the output is very fine, but when being printed, the thai characters are appearing fine but the english characters' font is being changed to somehting else (courier or arial). Why is this happening so? Because of this, all the output is being merged and looking very weird.
The smartform is created in EN and is translated to all languages. All user has logged on to SAP in EN language.
Can somebody please help me out with whether the problem is with THANGSAN or the printer?
P.S. The smartform is actually similar to the standard script Z_RVINVOICE01 in which only THANGSAN is used.

Hi Sandra,
Thanx for the reply. I do not have authorization for SMARTFORM_TRACE. Though I entered by debugging, I did not understand what should be done there.
But as you said I created a spool. Can you please help me in how to check that RAW thing?
Thanks a lot.

Why is Preview not displaying fonts correctly?
Since the last Snow Leopard upgrade, Preview is not displaying some fonts correctly. I checked to see if the fonts were embedded in the PDF (by resorting to Adobe Acrobat 5... which is not displaying them correctly either) and they are True Type with Windows encoding which as far as I know Preview OS X should be able to handle.
I tried deleting the Preview preferences in User/Library/Prefeerences and restarting but this made no difference. The same PDF works perfectly though on an old iMac that is running OS X Tiger!!!Well I found a few minor font problems which seem to have cropped up since the last system upgrade, but none of those were the font in question. Also, as I understand it, the whole point of PDF documents is that the fonts are embedded in the document so you do not have to have the fonts installed on your computer to view the PDF properly. DW preview shows default font? [subject edited by moderator]
Hi, I've just downloaded and started using Dreamweaver CC, but the preview doesn't show the Google Font in the mark-up? It shows the default font (Times New Roman) instead
What is it you are previewing? Can we see the code?

My fonts aren't previewing correctly in Font Book
For some reason I have random fonts in Font Book that aren't previewing correctly. This has not always been the case but for some reason recently it is. I have tried clearing my font cache, etc. without any success. Thoughts?
Hello, installed any new fonts lately?
Did you Validate all fonts in Font Book & check for duplicates? -
Brushes & patterns won't save...
I have photoshop cs3 extended. I have tried everything, but I will upload my brushes and patterns and when I close the photoshop or restart my photoshop the brushes are gone. I add the brushes from imagepacks, it's always done it, but its getting a little exausting adding them everytime I am working with photoshop. What can I do to fix this? Thanks!
From the palette flyout menus choose Save Brushes (or whatever) and Save them someplace with a name. Then when you load them they should stay.
One place you could save them to is the appropriate folders in the Presets folder. -
Preview is missing fonts??
Hi all.
Sometimes when I open a document in Preview, I get a message like "this document needs such-and-such a font, since it is missing it may not display correctly."
Sometimes I don't get that message, but I see distorted graphics instead of text in areas where (I assume) fonts are missing.
Is there a way to find and install missing fonts? You could then try to reinstall Preview from the OS X disks. Download Pacifist. Put your OS X install disk in the drive and click the button in Pacifist to "Open Apple Install Disks". Once it's done reading it, or them in, find the Preview application by expanding the folders presented. You are of course looking for the one in the Applications folder.
Highlight the Preview app and click on the Install button at the upper left. Pacifist will extract, verify and install Preview, replacing the old copy on the hard drive. Eject the OS X disk.
Keep Pacifist open and do the same with the 10.5.4 Combo update file. If there's an update to Preview, you'll need to install that, too. It will also appear as Preview.app. When you click the Install button in Pacifist, it will tell you that Preview already exists and give you multiple choices. You want to click the "Update" button.
You can of course get to the same point by performing an Archive and Install, but this will take far less time and only replace the one application. -
For many version (since at least 10.6.1) I am having problems displaying a PDF created on regular basis in our restaurant in Prevoew or Quicklook. No one else with PC has this issue but me. When I open PDF in Preview, all texts are displayed as black bars. In Adobe Acrobat all fonts are OK.
How can I fix this? How can the author help me to fix this?
Feel free to download and test the PDF HEREEven weirder. The Acrobat Reader (latest version) and Acrobat Pro 9 display the PDF fine. But the Acrobat PDF plugin for Safari does not display it correctly, even though it's also the latest version, installed by the Reader.

Preview standard photoshop fonts without having to view each one?
Just wondering if there was a way to view the fonts available without having going through everyone first to see what they look like? Perhaps there is a site out there with images of the fonts?
