Preview can't recognize column text?
I often view PDF articles in preview that are written in 2 columns (page split in half). Preview doesn't seem to recognize this. When I try to highlight or select text, preview always selects BOTH columns as if they are just one. Anyway to solve this problem?
P.S. Adobe rexognizes both columns fine, but I fin preview easier and simpler to use, except for this problem.
In a word, no. That's a Preview shortcoming. If you want to report this to Apple, send a bug report (or enhancement request) via its Bug Reporter system. Join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report/enhancement request. You'll get a get a Bug ID number; thus, starting a dialog directly with engineering.

Hi,
I'm using a Macbook Pro system version 10.10.2.All PDF files (actually regardless of the format) are shown as' damaged or used a format preview can't recognize' once I copy them to a thumb-drive from the Mac. The file names end correctly as .pdf. I am sure that the thumb drive was in a good condition before I used it on the Mac and I tried two other new thumb drives but the problem persisted. Can anyone tell me how to solve the problem? Thanks a lot!!Please repartition and format the flash drive for a Mac. It's likely formatted for a PC.
Drive Partition and Format
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. -
How can a 2 column text frame be split into 2 separate text frames?
Hi InDesigners,
I have a 12 spread (22 page) document that was originally created with a single column primary text frame in CS6. It contains text and anchored images throughout the doc. (images are anchored to the text frame).
My client now wants each page split into 2 columns, but the columns need to have different widths - the left column needs to be narrower than the right. Although I can create 2 columns in a single frame, it's not possible to adjust the column widths separately, so I need to get them into 2 separate frames.
Is there a way to convert a 2 column text frame into 2 separate text frames, so I can resize the column widths invididually?
kind regards,
-chi, Thanks for the replies,
The doc size is 8.5"x11", with 1/2 " margins. I never mentioned anything about it being a book. (It's just a paper my client wrote and woud like a PDF of it). The reason for the uneven columns is he wants the images to be 4" wide. For some reason, he wasn't keen on just a single column with text wrapped around the pix. I proposed making a 3" left column threaded into a 4" right col with a .5" gutter between them and he wants it that way.
Thank you both for your respones. I'll try the script

10.5.3: Preview can't display text on saved PDFs...?
I have lots of credit card/bank statements which I've downloaded as (not 'printed as') PDFs... now since 10.5.3 when I open them Preview can't read the text- it displays logos and layout but no text... taking the documents over to my laptop running 10.5.2 they display perfectly...
...anyone else had this? Or have an idea about how to solve it?
(I did my first 10.5.3 update via Software Update- when I found this problem I downloaded the 10.5.3 dmg from the Apple website, and ran that... and still have the problem...)
This is on a late 2007 iMac...I didn't fill out the text. The text was there when I first downloaded the documents- and is still readable on my other computer. They just come up blank...
Actually to test, I just downloaded Adobe Reader- which displays them perfectly... but Preview still displays them blank...?

Can no longer select text in Preview
Hello there,
A very annoying problem: I selected some text in a .pdf file that was opened with Preview and I marked it yellow, however once I saved it I could no longer select any more text, it is like the function has disapeared. I even tried restarting the computer, but I can no longer select text in that file. How odd?
Funny enough, the phenomenon doesn't occur with all my .pfd files. I guess it is a bug, but quite annoying. Any one else having the same problem? Thanks for posting back though i'm sorry it didnt work.
I believe there are also other dashboard plist files in that folder (i'm not currently at my Mac so can't say which exactly, though i believe one is called "client"). You could try trashing them (or dragging them to the desktop).
Does the problem also happen if you log in to another account? Create a new account if necessary.

Hello all,
for SAP Document Access by Open Text - can it recognize barcode ? As well identify document number from barcode ? With this document number can we configure the business transaction to which this scanned barcode could be attached as attachment link?
Regards
VimalaVimala,
for SAP Document Access by Open Text - can it recognize barcode ?
You can implement all basic scenarios of archive link with ADA SAP Document Access by Open Text.
In your case ADA SAP Document Access by Open Text supports late storing with bar code and early storing with bar code scenarios of archive link
As well identify document number from barcode ?
Barcode is for indexing. During late archiving scenario you bind the index (barcode) to the SAP document number (invoice/Sales order..etc) which pop-ups a window for entry of SAP document number.
Typically real time scenario may be archiving email correspondence to each every SAP documents of sales process right from Quotation to Sales Order so that every user of the corresponding SAP document can view correspondence.
Similarly for early storing with bar code scenarios storing of all the partial (contract) deliveries with same barcode number to full fill the ordered quantity.
Of course it depends on these are to be applied to scenarios.
With this document number can we configure the business transaction to which this scanned barcode could be attached as attachment link?
Yes
Thanks,

Dear all,
I'm new to HFM (11.1.2.1), and I have a question regarding where I can specify a column type as "Text" not number in web form of HFM. Right now I set "Cell Text" field to "[Default]", but was unable to get the text (HsGetText) in smartview with corresponding POV. The reason I thought was that I didn't successfully store the text in the POV. But how to correctly indicate a column type as "Text"? Does anyone know the answer?Hi there,
I am not sure if I understand what you want to achieve. However, I would suggest to set the Cell Text field to "1" (instead of "[Default]") in order to be able to input/export cell text in a web. form.

Thanos

Can't resize column to fit text
Can't resize column to fit text in numbers. option is "grayed-out" no matter what I do
It is either a glitch or a rather unfun new thing. No one knows for sure. You do have a bit more control if you go into your photos app, find your photo and tap on the little box with the arrow poking out of it. That allows you to send it to be wallpaper. You can do some scaling, although not as much as you used to.
Finding work arounds is about all you can do until it's fixed. -
How can i recognize mixed format of text?
Mission:
if some text has "regular" fontstyle, i apply to it Bold style. And if it have mixed fontstyle (both bold and regular) i would like apply the Bold Italic style. But i discovered, that property FontStyle of text with mixed style is "Regular"! Then how can i recognize mixed format of text?
Thanks. When you have a text reference, check to see how many textStyleRanges it has. If more than one, you have mixed formatting. Check the style of each textStyleRange.

How can i make the text go vertically in numbers
How can I make the text vertical in numbers? I have merged the cells and cannot find an option for making it go vertical as opposed to horizontal.
I already gave two tools to fit this kind of needs.
tip #1 :
--{code}
--[SCRIPT write_vertically]

Save the script as a Script: write_vertically.scpt
Move the newly created file into the folder:

In a cell, type a word to write vertically then select it.
CAUTION, don’t select the cell but the word which must be highlighted.
Go to the Scripts Menu, choose Numbers, then choose “write_vertically”
The script insert in the cell the word after inserting a return between every characters.
For my own use, I link a shortcut to the script thank to FastScripts.

Hi, I've just installed mavericks but my HPc4180 will not print and is showing a 'blank' page in previews can anyone help me?
A few suggestions for you:
Try:
uninstall all HP utilities or other HP apps on your Mac
see if there is updated software on the HP website
go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Print
control-click on your printer in the column on the left
select "Reset Printing System..." and "reset" in the dialog that follows
Do a factory reset on your printer
go back to printers & scanners and it should see your printer and download a driver for it from Apple -
How can I correct "hidden" text in a searchable PDF file?
This seems like a simple question. However, the answers are invariably complex, do not yield the desired result, and often answer a different question entirely. I say all that just to warn people up front that the "problem" is easier than how many people and PDF application developers, including Adobe, typically understand it while the proposed "solutions" are invariably a total...well, botch is a reasonable word if a bit understated.
Here is the actual problem:
I have "searchable" PDF files created by scanning documents and running them through an OCR process. I create "searchable" PDF files in order to archive, index, and eventually enable searching for the documents scanned. A "searchable" PDF satisfies those criteria better than any other commonly used, "portable" archive format -- though I would be happy if someone could point out an obvious alternative I may have overlooked. I do not need perfect OCR results. If I need a document to edit or perhaps feed into a spreadsheet or database, I expect to be able to reprocess the page images in a given "searchable" PDF file to OCR and convert the contents to Word, RTF, Excel, or another file format as necessary with more care for the results than for the archived document itself. Therefore, the "searchable" PDF document is the scanned page images which compose it while the OCR generated "searchable" text is secondary, but still important. Therefore, each file must contain scanned page images of sufficient detail to be efficiently converted by OCR if possible and legible enough for whoever views the images to be able to work out what an OCR process may fail to understand. Once scanned, those pages are the "document" and therefore "immutable." However, OCR is imperfect. For a searchable document archive, it does not have to be, but some errors are significant in that they may prevent the document from being found by a search. Therefore, there must be a way to view and, if necessary, edit the "hidden" text in a "searchable" PDF without altering the visual display of a document or how it is printed. No strike-throughs. No visible "corrections." None of the stuff PDF editors want to insert into a PDF file when editing it. I do not want to edit the document without exporting it to a format appropriate for an editable document. I just want adequately "correct" hidden text in a "searchable" PDF file.
I apologize for the length and redundancy in my description of the problem. However, past attempts to explain my problem and objectives as well as what I have seen in reply to similar queries across the Internet indicate that most people trying to answer this question come at it from the same point of view shared by most, if not all, PDF tool or application vendors. They seem to think that any desire to edit a PDF file is a desire to have a PDF word processor of some sort. Or, they assume that the OCR process employed may need tweaking of the means by which people apply it and then a process like "find suspects" is adequate to deal with any errors. But no, those are not what I am trying to accomplish and answers which address those topics do not answer this question.
In short, which tool or application from any vendor will reveal the "searchable" hidden text in a PDF produced by any OCR or other process and then enable corrections to the hidden text without changing any document display parameters at all? Note, hidden text typically includes bounding box information denoting the portion of the image from which the text was recognized. That information must not be lost or changed when editing the "searchable" text.
So, any tools or applications capable of doing this? If Adobe Acrobat XI Pro can (use of a trial copy demonstrated that the hidden text content can be reviewed, but editing did not work by any straight-forward means I could work out while trying out the application), fine. However, $500.00 list or even a $200.00 possible upgrade from a copy of Adobe Acrobat X Standard which came with my scanner is a lot of money for personal use when review and edit of the OCR generated hidden text in a "searchable" PDF file is the only function I require. Therefore, other suggested tools or applications which do what I need for less would be greatly appreciated. My "claim"? Actually I've made no "claim" such as you've mentioned.
Simply stated your OP has foundational premises that presume as factual what is not.
Here, we're in Adobe's hosted user forum for Acrobat.
Any other application use is not material.
Acrobat XI provides 3 OCR methods.
Searchable Image, Searchable Image (Exact) & ClearScan.
Only the first two provide the "hidden" text output.
(Glyphs have no stroke, no fill)
From back to the Acrobat 3 product family the design functionality of Searchable Image and Searchable Image (Exact) has been to facilitate the use of Find / Search.
The "hidden" text is can be touched up. Acrobat Pro provides the facility to view the hidden text.
So you can see what the OCR output that correlates to the bit-map images of the characters that are present.
With Acrobat XI Pro use Tools - Protection -Remove Hidden Information
In the Remove Hidden Information pane select "Hidden text" then "Show preview".
The default for the preview is "Show Only Hidden Text".
Back in the PDF --
You'd select some of the hidden text and retype what you suspect is the correct string of characters.
Save and return to the preview of the hidden text.
If you got it right, good. Continue.
If not, darn - try again.
Plug 'n chug -- somewhere over the rainbow it'll be done eh.
Full disclosure -- this is something I've done (enquiring minds don't you know).
I've found it to be a rather Sisypean undertaking.
So, "doable" but not practicable.
This is to be expected because such touchups are not the concern / focus of the output from Searchable Image or Searchable Image (Exact) - (the names tell it all).
To have touchup "editablity" of an OCR output using Acrobat make use of ClearScan.
ClearScan replaces recognized character bit-maps with a character from an Acrobat internal font.
The character strings can be selected to change to a generic, system available font.
Something that is good to know when embarking on the "tweak the PDF" journey is that PDF (the file format / technology as defined by its ISO Standard, ISO 32000-1) does not tolerate "editing". PDF is decidely not a word processor file format and "editing" can quickly render a PDF unusable.
Minor touchups can be made and your best "tool" for this is still Acrobat Pro. (Save As often and periodically "bank" the PDF via some file rename scheme.)
Be well... -

This is driving me nuts. It's not that often that I import text into InDesign. I've got two column page formats set up for an index. I'm placing the index text, which is an RTF file, into this two-column format. And, it just boringly splats itself right across the whole page, damn the two columns. What's this about? Why can't imported text adhere to the columns that are set up?
Thanks,
PeterYeh, I fixed it, finally. Yes, I had to click, click, click in the text frame and make sure I saw a blinking cursor in there. I actually typed in some text and verified that it was wrapping in the first column, not spanning. Then, I placed my file. And, it finally came in right. I guess you just have to be totally sure that your cursor's there in the 2-column textbox. Sometimes when I brought in the text, it literally create another single-column text frame, on top of the two-column one!
Thanks, everyone.
