Preview Changes File to 72 dpi upon opening

Hi,
I have a file that's 3300x4200 pixels at 300 dpi (so it would print as an 11"x14" print on a 300 dpi printer). The file size is too large to upload to the print on demand website that I'm trying to upload it too. My plan was to open it in Preview, reduce the dpi slightly so that it could still be printed very large, but I could get the file size just under the upper limit for the website. However, whenever I open this file in Preview and go to Adjust Size, it shows that the image is 72 dpi. When I open the same exact file in Adobe Illustrator, it registers as 300 dpi. If I try and change the dpi in Preview (to say, 250), it will change it, but then tell me that it cannot save the file. I really don't understand why it's opening as 72 dpi to begin with when I exported it from Illustrator at 300 dpi and when I open it in Illustrator again it's still 300 dpi, but in Preview it opens as 72 dpi.
I can just use Illustrator to export it again at a lower dpi, but I would still like to know why Preview is doing this and how I can make it stop. I have used Preview in the past to open 300 dpi files and they opened just fine as 300 dpi files.

Is this in Illustrator file you created as vector art, or does it contain an embedded raster image?
If the former, vector art has no resolution at all. It's a construct of mathematical points, curves and fills. That's why such files and fonts (which are created the same way) are considered resolution independent. When you open your Illustrator file in Preview, it is assigned a generic "resolution" of 72, but is entirely meaningless unless you save the file out of Preview in a raster format such as TIFF or JPEG.
If the latter, why would you embed a raster image in a vector art layout? Unless you have both types of components in the art (in which case an Illustrator document is the only way to go), it should have been created in Photoshop or other raster image editor and saved in a raster format. If it is a blend of vector and raster art, then easiest way to send out the final Illustrator file out is as a PDF, so the raster and vector art stay in their respective formats, but are then blended all into one file type.
The page Old Toad linked to has numerous errors regarding DPI. Right off the top, it's a mistake to declare the image of the house as having no difference. The web doesn't give a hoot about any type of image resolution. The number of pixels in the height and width is all it cares about (as does video production).
So to say there's no difference is wrong. Of course there's a difference. Not on the web page since it's only displaying the images but their pixel count, but if you print both of them independently of the web page, you wouldn't be able to miss it. The 1000 DPI file would print as a spec, and the 72 DPI file larger than what it looks like on your monitor. The resolution tells the printer, or other output device how many pixels to use in a linear inch (DPI) or centimeter (DPC).
There are other errors on the page I don't have time to get into.

I can't preview RAW files in Bridge CS5 or open them in Camera Raw

I've been using Photoshop CS5, Bridge and Camera Raw 6.7 with no problems whatsoever. I recently upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro to 10.8.5 and can no longer preview RAW files in Bridge, or open them in Camera Raw.
I've downloaded the Adobe DNG converter, but would much prefer to using my existing workflow if possible.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!

Adobe doesn't support CS5, an when I spoke to Apple, I was told that this is a known issue with OS 10.8.5 and that they're working on a patch. In the meantime I'm using Adobe's DNG as a workaround.
Have not heard before of this Known Issue, also find it hard to believe being true. But can't test my self because I only have CS6 and CC installed and always use Photodownloader to convert to DNG upon import. I have just installed the 10.8.5 update and checked in Bridge CC pointing to an attached card reader. no problem in showing the CR2 thumbs, it works as always and as expected.
To my knowledge Bridge CS5 is already 64 bits and I can't think of any valid reason why an OS update would cause this problem so suddenly (but I'm not a technician I have to confess…)
However, I would first try a check and repair permissions from Apple Disk Utility and also try Cocktail (good and cheap 3th party maintenance application for Mac) to clear caches and check permissions.
Also try a new user account just for testing to rule out your current account as the culprit.

PDF File says its empty upon opening.

One week ago, I am able to open this PDF file. All of a sudden, I can't open the same pdf file in my AirMail App and my hotmail using Safari on my Macbook. This has been happened two days ago, and I restarted my computer, redownload the application, restart the application...without avail. The error message is 'The file <file name> could not be opened because it is empty.' I am able to open the same pdf file from my iPhone5 using Mail app and Safari. Please help, I am stuck with this and I can't work!

My apologies, was overseas the past week.
Anyway, I cannot open the file in Apple's Preview. I can't open it in Adobe Reader as well. It is zero kb once downloaded. I tried to open it via hotmail in Safari and the same problem occurred.
Funny thing is I am able to open it with my iPhone Mail. Help!

I also have the same problem, but with my JNI and C++ expertise, I was able to isolate the problem.
My platform:
- Microsoft Windows XP, Family Edition (French), Version 2002, Service Pack 3
- JRE 1.6.0_21
In the source of the JDK6 (Src/windows/classes/sun/awt/windows/WDesktopPeer.java), the Desktop.open(file) calls the native method
ShellExecute(*uri.toString()*, "open")
For example, if you try to open "c:\helloworld.pdf",
uri.toString() = "*file:/c:/helloworld.pdf*"if I call ShellExecute("C:\\helloworld.pdf", "open"), it works
but if I call ShellExecute(" file:/c:/helloworld.pdf", "open"), it doesn't work on my platform.
In both case, the ShellExecuteW or ShellExecuteA function of the Windows API return the integer 42 (> 32), saying that the functions succeeded. If the file object is not correct, the function should return a value <= 32.
=> The bug is not due to Java implementation, but to a bug in the Windows API.
Other remark:
I also tried the "ShellExec_RunDLL" entry point of the Shell32.dll library using RunDll32 utility. Both commands below are running correctly:
rundll32 SHELL32.DLL,ShellExec_RunDLL "C:\hello.pdf"
rundll32 SHELL32.DLL,ShellExec_RunDLL "file:/C:/hello.pdf"My conclusion:
1) A workaround could be implemented in the JRE: use the file path without the "file:/" protocol prefix.

User Exit for Changing Item Quantity in VA02 upon Openning

Need your help. I checked the forums and I didn't find anything.
Requirement:
I'm trying to change the item quantity and uom upon openning VA02. ie.
1) Run tcode VA02
2) Enter Order Number
3) run exit, Change Quantity and Uom <<<
4) Result: VA02 screen is displayed with new quantity (still in change mode).
My Question is:
a) Is this possible?
b) What Exit/BADI do I use, and fields do I have to use?
Stuff I've done
1) debug: USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBAP is NOT triggered. It is only triggered after the order is opened and the material number is changed.
2) I tried changing XVBAP-KWENG and Setting XVBAP-UPDKZ to 'U' at USEREXIT_READ_DOCUMENT (EXIT_SAPMV45A_918) but change does not take effect after saving. Also the field becomes greyed out. (The reason I chose this exit is because its the only one where xvbap seems to be modifiable). Although, I acknowledge that this doesn't look like the right solution anyway.

And above enhancement spot also not reserverd for sap internal use.
Just try to implementation BADI definition MSR_SD_SALES and use method CHANGE_BILLING_BLOCK_ITEM.

Preview: The file "_" could not be opened because you do not have permission...

Whenever I try to open an image, this will pop up. I've read other discussions on this problem, I've followed the steps, and it still won't open. Earlier today my computer was saying my startup disk was almost full, so I deleted most of my pictures. At this point, I've tried Get Info > Sharing and Permissions > +admin and unlocking the lock in the bottom right. Is there anything I'm missing or could do?
Also, I haven't used Time Machine at all.

That's not where you need to go.
You shouldn't have any reason to change permissions unless something changed them first.
Also, it may not be that the permissions are wrong, but something related to the disk being too full.
If all of those picutres are in your Home folder, and there is at least 9GB or free space, you'll need to reset your home folder permissions:
Boot into Recovery HD by holding down cmd-r on restart.
When that boots, open Terminal from the Utilities menu.
Type "resetpassword" without the quotes and hit return.
When the reset utility opens, select your hard drive, then your user name.
At the bottom of the window there is a button to Reset home folder permissions and ACLs; click that.
Quit out of that and also out of Recovery.
If the pictures are not in your home folder, that may be affecting your access.

Since upgrading to OS X Mavericks I have not been able to work on any MS Word tracked changes documents (works fine if no tracked changes or comments in the doc). Every time upon opening such a word file with tr.changes the word processor closes / crashes.
What can be done in this case?

I just discovered that by turning off in tracked changes balloons in Word preferences prevents the software from crashing, but from then on I need to use only the review pane.

How to change File Kind (not "how to assign an application to open a file?)

I build the toc.ncx file (part of the ePub setup) automatically, based on user input and source file content. It's fine, except that the file Kind (as shown in Finder Preview, for example) is Plain Text.
The Kind should be Unix Executable File (the actual description is "zmedia-type="application/x-dtbncx+xml") in order for the file to function correctly with the rest of the ePub generation.
I could set the file Kind in the program (I think!), except that I do not know what the code for such a Kind is.
Can you help?

To make the file a Unix executable can be done as follows:
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder and enter the following:
sudo chmod 755 /pathto/filename
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password at the prompt; it will not be echoed. Alternatively put a space after "755" then drag the file's icon into the Terminal window.
If you want the Unix icon simply set the file's default application to Terminal by selecting the file then Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. Change the default application in the Open With section. If you want all .ncx files the same way then click on the Change All button.

Modified Date changes to now by selecting (not opening) vmwarevm file

VMware Fusion is currently not running, and it's disabled (an older version not compatible with Yosemite has not yet been upgraded) so I don't think Fusion is doing this....
I have VM files (.vmwarevm) that were not opened for months. I want to see which is which by viewing the date stamp in Finder. Clicking once shows the old date, then almost instantly it is changed to Now. Like this:

Modified Today, <now>
Last Opened Today, <now>
... but once changed those dates do not change again.
I found an un-clicked one and it did the same thing, with <now> as the time stamp on that one. Now I have files with slightly different "today" date stamps which is incorrect and not helpful to determine the age of these files.
It appears something (Preview?) is opening the file to access the content and generate a "recent screenshot" for the current state of the VM.
I found no other files [edit: no other file types] that behave this way.
I duplicated and renamed an odt file to .vmwarevm and it does not result in a Modified or Last Opened date change.
(one of the VMs also doesn't change so I suspect a bad file format).

Acrobat 9 makes PDF versions 4.0 and higher. You need a PDF version 5.0 to handle transparencies well. PDF version 4.0 doesn't handle transparency effects well at all.
Pagemaker needs Acrobat 5 to be able to directly export PDF's with custom job settings. It only generates a PDF version 4.0, but works for our needs in Pagemaker.
I choose to keep both Distiller versions to make our work easier. When you have 20 ads open in Pagemaker, and you send the first one as a postscript through the print window, it sets up the "File, Export" in Pagemaker to use the correct PDF job setting, and then you can just do "File, Export to PDF" for the next 19 ads and it makes perfect PDF's. Works slick instead of having to make postscripts of all 20 ads first and then run them through Distiller. If you only have Distiller 9 installed, it doesn't let you select any custom job settings from your Distiller. Crazy, I know, but that's what I've figured out we have to do to get it to work. Have to have Distiller 5.0 to control PDF settings in Pagemaker and still be able to export from the file menu directly to PDF.
Distiller 9 is used for all other more advanced design pieces created in InDesign or Photoshop that are saved as a postscript first and PDF's are made the long way in those cases (running postscript through Distiller 9 at the end).

Why is it that when I try to open a project, it says "the project contained a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type"?

Backup with cloning software your HD to have an exact copy of it as it is.
Use this methodology to recover your partition.

Adobe Reader XI launches, but crashes upon opening any file

Environment:
Acer Aspire 5750Z
Windows 7 Home Premium; Service Pack 1
Intel Pentium CPU B940 @ 2.0GHz
4.0 GB RAM
64-bit OS
I can Launch Adobe Reader XI. It displays its home screen.
However, upon opening any PDF file, the program crashes with the following messages:
"Adobe Reader has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem."
followed by:
"A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. [close program]."
This occurred with prior version as well.
I uninstalled Reader.
I freshly installed the new version.
The problem remained.

Try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

InDesign CS3 crashes upon opening a file from Snow Leopard

Hello all. I'm desparately hoping someone can help me with this issue as I've spent the better part of my weekend working on two important files for work and would hate to start over.
I've been working at home in InDesign CS3. My home computer has Snow Leopard 10.6.2. I don't have any font managmenet plug-ins or programs other than Font Book. I started two new files and when I took them to work, both files crash InDesign upon opening. I don't get to open InDesign at all. My work computer has InDesign CS3 as well running Tiger 10.4.11. It is running Suitcase Fusion, which I've tried disabling and then trying to open the file to no avail. I've started the computer in safe mode to try and open the file, deleted preferences, disabled all fonts on the computer, repaired preferences, any and all suggestions listed on these forums and the rest of the internet. All of these solutions were met without success.
All files are stored on a portable hard drive. However, there are files on the drive that were created on the work computer that still open fine so I know the drive is a non-issue.
After InDesign crashes, I'll restart it just by clicking the program icon (not by double-clicking my file or dragging the file to InDesign) and it will crash all by itself. When I restart it again, it asks to repair the file that crashed it. Saying 'YES' crashes the program again.
This is a problem that just arose this morning and I have yet been able to go back home to try and open the files on my home computer. I'm praying my work computer did not corrupt the files somehow.
I'm hoping there is someone out there who can help me?

I understand what you're saying regarding removeable media. I'm tying this message from home with much frustration. I copied the file off the drive onto my desktop, ejected the hard drive, and I get the same crash error:
"The application InDesign has unexpectedly quit. A crash report has been generated. To provide us with the best chance of fixing this problem, please select Continue to add a detailed description that includes the steps required to reproduce the crash. Adobe will use this crash report to help find a future solution to this problem."
I believe this might be relegated strictly to InDesign as a Photoshop file that was created from scratch, edited, and saved on the same hard drive next to the InDesign file opened perfectly.
I would love the opportunity to send you this file to see if you can open it on your system. I have a YouSendIt account if that works best.

How to change the prompt message in a open file box

In my VI the user has to introduce several file path. They are sequenced so we know which one is requested. Is there an easy way to change the message on the "choose file to read" window in order to have "choose xxx file to read" etc... Is this through some VB programming or does labview have some tools for that ?

There are two solutions:
OBN's solution uses a function to get the file name.
My solution uses the file control. You have to click on the browse button to select the file.
Both solutions will open the system Open File dialog where the user can select the file. OBN's solution is more obvous to change the parameters. In my solution you have to use property nodes.
