Preview column blank

In column mode, the preview column is blank for all files:images, PDFs, links, archives, etc. Yes, I have "Show preview column" selected in view options. The other discussions of this did not provide a solution.

Check your Pages preferences to see if "include preview in document by default" is checked.

    I just updated and rebooted my system. Now the small thumbnail in my preview column is gone. I can turn on and off the preview column in "view options" but the thumnail stays blank.

    Problem Solved. I relaunched finder by going to "apple menu - force quite - finder - relaunch" . Quick Look Preview came back and so did the small thumbnail in preview column.

  • Showing preview column in icon mode crashes finder

    Issue: Finder crashes and my icons on my desktop disappear then reappear when attempting to view a file of any type in icon mode with "show preview column" selected in "Show View Options".
    I don't recall any recent updates or any changes to my G5. I can open a file in its application program (i.e. a .jpg opens in Photoshop) if I double click it quickly enough before Finder crashes. The only way I can get icon view not to crash Finder is by unchecking the "show preview column" box in "Show view options". I like the preview option and would very much like to get it back.
    Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

    Sorry, no idea how I missed your reply back on the 29th!

    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.

    Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
    The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
    Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
    If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
    If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.

  • Preview column in Mail using OS X Lion, "extra" portions of email text showing when the actual message does not have the extra text showing?

    I Don't know a way to post an example, but here's the issue; In the preview column window, where you can see a portion of the conversation, I have what looks like extra messages showing up. In the view column, this extra text is not there! These messages are usually private in nature(haven't seen anything too bad - yet) and have nothing to do with the actual email. Any ideas?

    To add more; I first noticed this 2 days ago and reported it to Apple. When I did notice it, I went to preferences and changed how many lines of the content preview shows, then I closed the message view column and expanded the preview column as wide as I could get it. On one of the messages, it kept continuing after it ran out of space in the preview, for a running total of at least 100 words. Even then, in the actual message viewer, it only showed 1 complete message of about 25 words.

  • Preview column and appleworks documents

    My two Macs running Tiger 10.4.3 do not show a preview of Appleworks documents in the preview column of the finder.
    My Mac running Panther does.
    What are possible reasons that the Tiger Macs do not show the preview?
    I do note that the Tiger Macs do successfully show previews of pdf files and jpegs.
    thanks
    iMac 450 dv, Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    AFAIK the AppleWorks Finder preview is a plug-in written specifically for the Finder. That plug-in architecture was never really used much to the best of my knowledge, and over time the Finder has perhaps transitioned to a newer method of previewing content. The AppleWorks oversight may merely reflect the overall deprecated nature of this app at Apple. Consider that a tag line for iWork is "Building a successor to AppleWorks." So, eh :shrug:

  • Finder crashes when Preview column is active in list view

    I've created a bootable system backup of OS X 10.10.1 on an external 1TB HD connected via firewire 800 to a 2011 iMac running OS 10.10.1.
    I have had no problems with Yosemite's Finder on the iMac if I boot from the internal HD. I check to be sure which HD I've started from by having the Finder window show the Path Bar via a setting in the Finder's View menu.
    The problems only appear when I boot from the external HD, then the Finder crashes when the Preview column is active in list view. I can force quit and restart the Finder via the Force Quit Applications (command-option-escape) tool. I can open files from within an open application but cannot open files by clicking on the file directly, as long as the Finder is set to Show the Preview column. I prefer to work in list view, so suggesting I use another view doesn't solve my problem.
    Another strange issue is that I can boot from the external HD if I select that HD in System Preferences > Startup Disk but not if I hold down the option key and select that HD during start-up if the Preview column is active in list view. When I try to boot from the external HD by selecting that HD during start-up, instead the computer starts up from the internal HD.
    I CAN boot from the external HD if I select the external HD during boot-up IF the Preview column is NOT active in list view.
    Is there a way for me to reinstall the OS on the external HD only? I did create a bootable Yosemite installer jump drive when I installed Yosemite on the iMac originally.
    I've run Disk Utility on the external HD from the files available on the Recovery HD to both verify the HD and repair disk permissions to no avail.

    Open Terminal application (spotlight for it). If you don't have it, get it from the Apple Support site.
    In the command-line window that appears, type in:
    <user>$ cd /Users/<user>/Library/Preferences
    <user>$ rm com.apple.finder.plist
    <user>$ ls com.apple.finder.plist
    the system shouldn't return anything as the file should be gone
    <user>$
    exit from Terminal - you may need to restart your system at this point to recreate the com.apple.finder.plist.
    Good luck -

  • Blurred icons in Preview column

    Low resolution images (for example icons) are blurred in Preview column since some recent osx update. It gets sharp (just like it should be) only when I resize a finder a little bit. But then when I move to another icon, it gets blurred again. Same issue on macs of my folks. Is there any chance to solve this issue?

    Thanks for your quick answer. Now I see that I forgot to mention an important thing so my comment was confusing. Sorry about that. Let explain one more time...
    I am a graphic designer and this icon is one of my work. When I go through a list with icons, they appear blurred on the right in Preview column section. Just like this:
    But low resolution images in preview column always looked like this:
    This thing has been changed in one of the last OS X updates. And it gets really annoying when I work with low resolution images/icons.
    So my question is: Is this a bug? Folks around me have the same issue. How can we change it back to nice, sharp and real look?
    Thanks

  • Photoshop Elements 9 prints and Previews are blank

    Recently installed Elements (not the trial, the paid version) on a new MacBook Pro, and it not only won't print, the Print Preview is blank. Wondering if it was the document, so I created a new document with Elements, painted a few strokes, and tried printing again. Same result. The Print Preview is blank. The thumbnail of the image DOES show up in the Print dialog box. I re-installed the software. I deleted and re-installed the printer. I restarted the computer. All other apps are able to print, and Preview app is able to print the same documents that Elements will not print. I've been doing IT for years, and I've never seen anything like this. Any suggestions?

    I may have just found a solution.  In the print dialog box, under more options, colour management...if i leave the Colour Handling to Photoshop and change Printer Profile to Apple RGB or to my Printer colour profile then I could print. However, colour is off although it looked nice in print preview.  So, instead I downloaded ICC Colour Profile for Mac from adobe and change back the Printer Profile to Adobe RGB(1998) which is same as above Image Space profile.
    And I am quite satisfied with the print output.

    Yes, sorry for the confusion. Normally i go to the web link to post message but it didn't work this time, so i replied directly from email and that seem to be ok.
    Anyway, my printer is Canon MG5240. After reading your thread, I installed updated driver from Apple (printer driver for Mac) and when still cannot print, I called a canon rep here and asked about it and he said to go into canon website only. So I loaded driver from Canon website which also didn't seem to change anything. When I was using Elements 9 trial version i did not have problem printing from the software.

  • 10.4.4 Preview Column

    With everything currently going on in the Apple world, this might not be Earth shattering news but ....
    I run Tiger on my G3 B&W / Powerlogix 900 Mhz and usually hold off with system updates until Powerlogix comes out with an update for CPU Director and I'm sure there are no problems with the new version. Satisfied that all would be okay, I updated to 10.4.4 over the weekend. Zero problems and 10.4.4 works like a champ on my ancient B&W. However I did notice one thing which caught me by surprise. Toying with the idea of buying another iMac (already have one of the 20" ALS models used by my daughter), I'm wavering between a G5 iSight model and the new Intel model. One step in the decision process is an assessment of what software I use regularly and what universal binary software I have. Under 10.4.3, it was a rather easy task (started doing this last week, right after the Intel Mac announcements) .... just open the applications folder in column view, select an application, then look in the preview column. Last item in the preview column was an "architecture" line which indicated whether the application was PPC, Universal Binary, or both. Unfortunately, under 10.4.4, this "architecture" line no longer appears in the preview column. Instead, you must use "get information" on each application to determine this .... which takes considerably longer than just using the down arrow key to move down through the various applications. Anyway .... I just found this rather odd.

    Overall Leopard is a fine beast. Basically all I would like is
    a/ scrolling and not only play in window columns
    b/ fix quickview so it plays all the files it should and
    c/ also doesn't crash

  • Image content type in Site Asset Image library: The Preview and Thumbnail Preview columns do not display the picture of the item.

    I have two different Site Asset libraries.  The Site Asset Picture library has items of
    content type picture.  The Site Asset Image Library has items of
    content type image.
    1) I do not quite understand the different between a picture content type versus an image content type.
    2) the thumbnail and preview columns do not display the image in the Site Asset
    Image Library.  (the image does display in the thumbnail column of the Site Asset Picture library.)  I expected the image to display in the Site Asset Image Library the same as it does in the Site Asset Picture library.
    Why doesn't it?
    Betty
    Betty Stolwyk

    I have subsequently found out that our "Site Asset Images" library is a Document Library to which someone must have replaced the Document content type with an Image content type.  I also found out that picture previews/thumbnails cannot be displayed
    in Document libraries.  So the problem was the library type, not the content type.
    So I simply created a new Picture Library (whose content type = picture) and copied the files into that and the thumbnails displayed just fine!
    I bet what led to this is the default "Site Assets" library that is created for a new Team site.  It is just a document library but sounds very similar to the "Assets" library.  I can imagine someone thinking the "Site Assets" library was a standard
    container for images, and simply changed the name to better identify the content!
    As far as 'image' vs 'picture' content types, I noticed that a new Picture Library contains a content type of 'picture', but an Asset Library contains a content type of 'image' (as well as audio and video).  Although the 'image' content type has a few
    more fields than the 'picture' content type (picture content type does not have thumbnail), the actual Picture Library contains pretty much all the same fields, including the thumbnail.  So for all practical purposes, either library type can be used for
    storage of pictures.  I am guessing that the Pictures Library which uses the picture content type is for backwards compatibility purposes, and that the 'image' content type is newer, being derived from the new "Rich Media Asset" content type and used
    in the new Asset Library which can hold audio and video in addition to pictures.
    Microsoft Help also mentioned that a Picture Library has a slide view which an Asset library does not.  So my take on that is that if you want the potential of seeing your pictures as a slide show, put them in a Picture library which is still using
    the 'picture' content type of previous SharePoint versions.  If you want to keep pictures organized with audio/video files, then put them into an Asset library which uses the  'image' content type derived from the new Rich Media Asset content type.

  • Preview column in Mail

  • Publish Preview returns blank flash window

    Hi guys,
    I recently switched computers, going from a windows vista with Adobe flash cs5.5 v to windows 8.1 with Adobe flash cs6 v12.0.2.529.
    We've been working on a flash project in cs5.5 and everything worked fine however now I'm getting some strange behavior.
    The problem I'm having is that the publish preview returns blank.
    It has the right size and stage color but nothing is shown.
    And I can't retrieve images from a runtime shared library.
    Here's some sample code that illustrates the problem (this used to work fine in cs5.5):
    package classes
        import flash.display.MovieClip;
        import flash.utils.getDefinitionByName;
        import flash.display.Sprite;
        import flash.external.*;
        public class ExampleClass extends MovieClip
            public function ExampleClass()
                ExternalInterface.addCallback("Show", Show);
                var test:Sprite = new Sprite();
                test.graphics.beginFill(0xff00ff);
                test.graphics.drawCircle(0, 0, 100);
                addChild(test);
                var test02:Sprite = new (getDefinitionByName("ConnectionIcon_Orange") as Class)();
                addChild(test02);
            private function Show():void
    In this example I don't see the "test" Sprite's graphic.
    When I comment the following line:
    ExternalInterface.addCallback("Show", Show);
    I do see the "test" Sprite's graphic.
    With the test02 Sprite I try to retrieve an image from a runtime shared library but it never shows up (it did in cs5.5 do i need to make any new setting changes?).
    I'm not getting any error messages and it seems fine with the code.
    could anyone please point me to where I'm going wrong?
    Cheers

    Few random things I'd try..
    First, are you running this in debugger? (CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER)? If not then use that means of executing and put some breakpoints in the code so you can watch the code execute step by step to see what's generating an error. In publish settings for this SWF in the SWF parameters make sure you check to permit debugging to get more verbose errors:
    Explicitly including ExternalInterface rather than flash.external.*;. It should include it (and everything in the package) but I've had lookup issues with this before. So:
    import flash.external.ExternalInterface;
    See if that clears up the break on that line. You should set a break point above that line however so you can step into the command and watch for errors.
    Make sure your access toggle (network/local files) is correct to access your RSL.
    Sometimes a couple more lines of code for clarity can help a lot. Break up your getDefinitionByName line into 2 lines, maybe adding in a condition just so you can step through it and analyze exactly which part of that compound statement is going wrong. It could be as simple as your "new (...)" isn't being cast to a Sprite before you assign it so the line fails. So try:
    var test2Class:Class = getDefinitionByName("ConnectionIcon_Orange") as Class;
    if (test2Class)
      var test02:Sprite = new test2Class() as Sprite; // cast
    By stepping through it you'll see if your definition cannot be found (RSL or link issue) or if assigning it to a Sprite (test02) is the issue (perhaps it's a MovieClip or some other unexpected type and this fails).

  • Preview shows blank pages

    I've just received a 13 page pdf file. Opening it with Preview showed me 13 blank pages. Opening it with Acrobat showed me the pages as they are supposed to look. What's going on? Why can't Preview show the contents? (The file was created on a PC, if that's relevant, by scanning in the pages, but I don't know the procedure after that.)
    I'm using 10.3.9, all updates installed, on a G4/1.25 PowerBook.
    Susan K

    Hi Susan,
    I can't explain the anomaly, but I experience similar problems with Preview when I attempt to view PDF docs that are created by my company, and also by a friend who is a missionary in Cameroon Africa (who I presume is using a PC to create the PDF docs...). I'm guessing that the program that creates their PDFs is causing the 'headache' for our version of Preview...
    The PDFs created by my company will not be 'searchable', and most of the text of PDFs created by my friend will be unreadable by Preview.
    Of note, an associate who uses Tiger, does not seem to have the same problems with his version of Preview...
