Preview corrupted

My copy of Preview, Version 7.0 (826.4), seems to have been corrupted after a lot of hard use. Preview opens, but when I try to open a jpg file, Preview simply goes off to the spinning disk.  I have tried to replace Preview from the Time Machine copy that was working a few days ago, but when I do this I get a message that says “Preview” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X.”  I am running the latest version of Maverick, 10.9.4.  Is there no way to do this short of reinstalling the entire operating system.

Reinstalling the application itself rarely does any good. Try the suggestions posted in Preview app problem

  • Preview corrupts PDF documents when saving

    There appears to be a serious bug in Preview and/or OS X's PDF creation libraries, that causes PDFs to be "invisibly" corrupted.
    My situation is: I have a number of PDFs that have been created using Windows-based OCR software. They are standard PDF/A documents, and when I open them in Preview they display fine. More importantly, I can "copy" the text from the document to the clipboard and it works as you would expect.
    However, if the PDF document it edited in any way - page order changed, a page from another document moved into the document etc - and then saved, the resulting PDF is corrupt. Although the text appears on the screen normally, any text copied to the clipboard is garbled: for example, the displayed text:
    AUTUMN SPECIAL!
    appears in one of my documents. However, highlighting it and copying it results in
    *)﴿*%&(﴾'"!# $
    in the clipboard.
    I now have hundreds of documents that are effectively useless, as I cannot accurately copy the document text. I know others have had the same issue (see the posts in this Superuser.com thread for examples). The issue would appear to go as far back as Lion and possibly before then.
    Is this a "known issue"? And has anyone come up with work-arounds - other than re-OCRing the files (usually by exporting as TIFFs, reOCRing etc)?

    This issue is still happening on Mavericks and it also happens with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you highlight some lines on a PDF text and then save it, the OCR becomes unreadable. If you try to redo the OCR on Acrobat Pro, this is impossible because the pages 'contain renderable text'. The only solution I can fathom is not to use annotation on any PDFs. The strange thing is that I cannot find any solutions to this, or any bugs submitted on Acrobat's forums, where they should also be, because this is not just a problem with Apple.

  • Preview corrupted? - shows grey checkerboard pattern on PDFs

    I'm using an iMac OS 10.6.8 & Preview version is 5.0.3. A few weeks ago I started getting this translucent grey checkerboard pattern across many PDF documents opening in Preview. It doesn't happen with all PDFs, and in some documents any photos on the page show clear while the text areas are covered with the checkerboard pattern. If I print the documents, there is no checkerboard pattern on the document. When I open the same documents on my old MacBook Pro running Preview 3.0.9(?) the documents are all checkerboard-free.
    I'm thinking my Preview app is corrupted somehow.
    Thanks in advance for your help...

    Note that the Menu item "Show Image Background" is checked (clicking it will uncheck it) and the transparent background shows as a checkerboard.

  • Previews corrupt with Lightroom 2.3

    I've just downloaded Lightroom 2.3, running on a Dell laptop with Vista 32bit. Created a new catalog and then imported a batch of Canon RAW files. All the images appear fine in the filmstrip but when I click on one and it starts to render the preview, I end up with a corrupt preview. Bottom half looks fine but top half looks like a solarised negative. I deleted the catalog, rebooted and re-imported but still the same result. To isolate it as a Lightroom problem I opened a catalog I created yesterday with Lightroom 2.2. Everything there appears to be fine. I'm tempted to delete some previews from that and let 2.3 build them from scratch but it's a job with a deadline so don't want to risk screwing anything up.
    Has anyone else had this problem with 2.3? I've never had any problem with Lightroom before and have used it from 1.0 upwards and have always installed the updates when prompted.
    Cheers
    David

    Hi Dorin. All the files are fine. After much messing about I've finally managed to import everything OK. Did two things different so not sure which has sorted the problem. The first was no to use the copyright preset I normally use. The second was to import the 300 or so photos in 3 batches. First batch was about 25 photos, second was about 50 and then the third was for the rest. All previews now fine but have no idea what's sorted it.

  • Aperture 2 Image Preview Corruption?

    I just installed Aperture 2 (upgrade) this weekend, and am noticing that eventually, after several minutes of use, image previews (main window, not thumbnails) will start becoming corrupted. The corruption looks like streaks or bands of altered color data. Once it begins, it will persist for most new images that are clicked on. If I quit Aperture, I've noticed the behavior continue with other images (i.e. my desktop background). A couple times, this has also been followed by a system crash.
    I'm running on a Dual 2.0 GHz G5, 3.5 GB, OS 10.5.2. Vast majority of images are RAW from a Canon 20D. Prior to updating Aperture, my system was fairly stable - the only crashes I would typically see were sleep-related.
    Anyone else see similar behavior? I should note that when I've relaunched Aperture, the image previews are no longer corrupted, so I don't think anything is wrong with my photos themselves...
    Thanks for any insight!

    Well, I think I finally found the answer to my problem... bad RAM. My system has been rather flaky recently - apps crashing randomly, so I started to think there were other issues going on. After reinstalling the OS had no effect, I finally figured I'd test the RAM. Sure enough, one of my pairs of DIMMs was bad (go figure it had to be the big 2GB upgrade I added). After I took them out, my Aperture imports have worked normally. It hasn't been very long, so I can't comment on whether that solved the system stability problems, too, but it's a good bet it has...

  • Previews corrupted in LR Windows

    Im running LR in Windows XP SP3. Im using it in a Mac via Boot Camp. That means a separate partition, the Mac OS is not running at the same time. I use this for image capture. I use Canon Utilities for Auto Import and the process is fast and solid.
    I was using and older generation MacBook to do this with no problems. I recently switched to a new MacBook and when I shoot an image with a light or blown out background the thumbnail preview gets very odd, sometimes solarized, sometimes black, sometimes it only effects the the preview and sometimes the large preview image as well. Ive tried adjusting the settings for the video card (NVIDIA) and the import quality and size, no luck. I then switched to a new MacBookPro, same problem. Im
    using Lightroom 2.2. When I export and open the database in a MacOS and build a 1:1 preview this problem goes away. (I use Windows for capture because the USB throughput is much faster and more robust then the mac side.
    I did check the NVIDIA settings for the Multiple Display settings but it does not seem to be active in a laptop. Here are some posted samples: http://www.kodakgallery.com/niedorf

    Thank you for replying. That is right, I am quite suspicious of memory - my laptop is full to the brim and I suspect that this may affect available memory and cause some problems in LR. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about computers to be certain.
    The card reader - quite simple: the card reader is the same, whether I save the files to the internal or external drives. I put the SD card in it, then copy the files and paste them where I want them. When done, I then open the LR and synchronize the folder. When I copy and paste files to the internal drive, the images look fine in LR; when I copy and paste them into the external drive, 80% of them come up visually corrupted in LR. Since the same card reader is used in both cases, and the files are OK when saved internally, I am assuming it is not the card reader.
    So, basically, when I became aware of the problem, I tried copying and saving the same file both internally and externally from the card reader, in order to verify what was going on. That is how the same file (more than one, actually) ended up on three different drives.
    Right now, my instinct is to copy everything to an external drive and clear some space on the internal one. I am very apprehensive though - what if something is causing file corruption on the external drives - in that case I will be corrupting everything when I migrate the files. Hence my previous question - are the files actually corrupted, or do they simply appear corrupted in LR because of memory issues? As I said, I don't know enough about this to be certain and do not know what to do.

  • Print Preview Corrupted

    Hi guys.
    Need your help.
    We have an issue regarding print preview. I'm trying to print Korean characters and in the print preview it's garbled. But in the print out itself it show perfectly.
    How to solve this?
    We already have the correct device type for Unicode (cascading fonts). We have the same device type for Japanese and it's working perfectly in both print preview and print out. Now we are wondering what's wrong with Korean print preview?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Have you applied any patches before that, if yes pls check the cause else you remove the driver and install again with proper driver and try it. As per my knlwledge this is related to your driver.

  • Mavericks Preview corrupts image file

    I am running Mavericks on iMac circa 2011.  I can use Preview to open 16 bit tiff image files which are 1 or 2 MB each.  Because the pixel values are small, I use the Auto Level button within the Adjust Color tool to see a decent image.  However, if I then close the file by clicking on the x on the top left corner of the image, the saved image will now have zeros in the entire image.  That is, opening it again will not show anything even with the Adjust Color tool   I checked by opening it with MATLAB and sure enough, everything is zero.  This does not occur if I do not try to adjust the image contrast using the Auto Level tool.   This also does not occur if I hit the 'Reset' button within Adjust Color before closing the file.  Please help!

    The startup drive is failing, or there is some other internal hardware fault.
    Back up all data on the drive immediately if you don't already have a current backup. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.
    Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
    If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

    Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

  • IPhone 6 iOS 8.1 - Photos blank / preview corrupt after restore from backup

    Hello,
    I just restored from a recent backup of an iPhone 5s @iOS 8.1 (from today) to a new iPhone 6, also on iOS 8.1.
    Everything else is ok, except the photo library. Only those images that have been edited within in iPhone 5s stock photos app over the last few months do not show up in the iPhone 6 library. The total number of images, videos etc shows up as exactly the same on both devices.
    In thumbnail view, they're just white boxes. When I click on the white thumbnail, I can see the intended image for less than a second before it turns into a blank white image again. Interestingly, if I try and revert the image to its original version (as clicked by the iPhone 5s, before it was edited in-app), the image becomes viewable again.
    I could do this if it were just a few images, but there are far too many of these scattered around in my photo library for this approach to be convenient.
    I have tried restoring from the same back up again, no luck. I even deleted the backup from iTunes, made a fresh back up of the iPhone 5s and tried restoring to the iPhone 6 - no luck.
    Is there anyway to force rebuild the photo library? Will that help?
    Or should I delete all data and settings from the iPhone 6 and start over again ?
    Any clues?

    OK I was able to fix the issue.
    Just in case this helps anyone:
    I used iExplorer and navigated to the "PhotoData" folder. I backed up and then deleted the following data files form this folder:
    1) com.apple.photos.caches_metadata.plist
    2) PhotosAux.sqlite
    3) Photos.sqlite
    Then I quit the Photos App, hard reset the iPhone and reopened the Photos App. It took a while to rebuild the photo library, but everything seems to be back to normal now.

  • Erased P2 Card Data Recovery Help!

    One of my students erased a P2 Card accidentally (Don't Ask). Fortunately they realized this as the trash was being emptied. We properly shut down everything right away and didn't save anything to the drive.
    The drive is an external LaCie connected via FW800. We are running Power PC G5 Towers and Intel Mac Pro's here with 10.5.4 OS and FCP 6.0.4 I even have one machine (Intel iMac) on 10.4.11.
    I ran "File Salvage which I have used once before to recover QT files. That did a great job for QT but the P2 Card had not been Log & Transfered.
    In my recovery attempt the application couldn't find anything like an MXF file. Can anyone recommend a recovery program that can maintain the file structure of the P2 Card. Maybe I'm dreaming, Maybe not. All suggestions welcome.
    Thank You

    Hi,
    In many cases, the data recovery software will recover files that don't work well:
    Unplayable videos, corrupt audio or video, ...
    In such case, you may have to repair the files in a second phase.
    There's a free app to diagnose and preview corrupt movie files: Treasured

  • Pdf display problem in Adobe Reader (NOT plugin)

    I looked around and found a lot of people having problems with the .pdf plugin inside Safari... that is NOT my problem... just to get it out of the way...
    I have .pdf files on my iMac, files in which I work, like forms. They are standalone and have nothing to do with the web.
    They have been created a while ago (couldn't say which version, but I'd say at least 5 years ago). Except, the problem isn't that the files are too old for the new versions... I am currently using those files without any problem with version 9 on my Macbook (Snow Leopard), while on the iMac (ML) I have the exact same problem no matter which version I try : version 9, version X or XI !!!
    What happens is this : I open a file (form-type) and I have pale blue covering every field except the one my cursor is in... and most of the fields are flashing... flashing between that blue and the usual color, and entries/nothing.
    Say a field is usually pink with a time in it, it will flash between blue and pink, and the time will appear and disappear, on and off... seemingly forever...
    I just checked a file I had which is mostly text (an e-book) but with a few note-fields... these were also blue... but nothing was flashing.
    It seems it's the "interactive" fields that are acting weird.
    Since the problem is the same no matter the Adobe Reader version and only on my Mountain Lion computer, it seems it has to do with Mac OSX 10.8 but is there a solution? Has anyone else encountered this?

    After so many hours of searching, I finally found both culprits!!!
    A) the blue: It was stupid of me, really... it was simply that the "highlight existing fields" was selected (right top corner, usually). Once I de-selected it, all the blue went away... but data continued to disappear except when a box was selected. See B...
    B) Do NOT, Never ever, use Preview to make changes in a .pdf file and then save the file... That was the problem!
    It must've happened a few times, for example it just did this morning, on my new laptop on which I hadn't set Adobe to be my default program for .pdf and the file opened in Preview... I didn't even notice...
    And after searching some more I found a few threads and all had in common that people had used Preview to make changes and save the file... seems that Preview corrupts the files!
    By the way, Eric, no, opening in Preview did NOT give the same results... but files I opened that had never been opened (or, at least, not tempered with) in Preview were all fine...
    Thanks for your help though!

  • PDF display problem in Iframe

    I have a main JSF page MainPage.jsp.
    User clicks on a button in this main page and a new JSF page ChildPage.jsp is opened in another window.
    The ChildPage.jsp has some data in it and also has 3 iframes and each of them again is a jsp
    (say Iframe1.jsp, Iframe2.jsp and Iframe3.jsp. )
    Onload of Iframe3.jsp it submits to a servlet and a pdf document is displayed in that.
    Iframe1.jsp and Iframe2.jsp are JSF pages where as Iframe3.jsp is a pure html as below
    <html>
    <head>
    <script>
    function tryMe(){setTimeout("submitForm()", 1000);}
    function submitForm(){
    document.forms[0].action="/ctx/MyServlet?Id=300";
    document.forms[0].submit();
    </script>
    </head>
    <body onload="tryMe()">
    <FORM NAME="MyForm">
    Please wait, the document is loading...
    </FORM>
    </body>
    </html>
    Now here is the problem.
    Sometimes this works fine and sometimes this just doesnt show up the pdf.
    I have put debug messages in servlet and it seems there is no error and
    the messages shows that the pdf is written to the outputstream,
    however i dont see anything on the browser.
    I tried adding a delay of 1 minute (as in the javascript above) in submission of the page
    the error reduced by 80% but still it occurs sometimes.
    What could be the cause. I couldnt think much .
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thank You

  • When filling out a PDF form and reopening it is blank

    When I fill out a form using Acrobat XI pro and then save it with the same name or a different name and try to reopen it, it is blank.  I can us the quick print feature and it will actually print out the information I thought I saved.  But if I open it again it shows blank.  Any ideas?

    RebeccaFlameLily,
    This problem occurs when the Preview application on a Mac is used to fill-in the forms. It is well known the Preview corrupts PDFs in a number of ways and it should be absolutely avoided when using PDF forms. The damage it does to a document cannot be repaired, but you can open the corrupted form in Acrobat, export the form data (to an FDF or XFDF file), and import it back into a blank form. Then inform your users to use Adobe Reader and not Preview.

  • Export to PDF problems

    Much of our workflow (Prepress) involves taking in client files, laying them up in InDesign (either for sizing, position, or to build versions), and then submitting that file to our RIP.
    Exporting to PDF is quick, allows for the preservation of transparency, allows you to bypass InDesign's faulty color management UI, and can be batched via plug-ins like Batch Output. But, InDesign can cause a number of issues with the resulting PDFs. CS4 seems to be particularly bad in handling subset fonts. It will create documents that appear in Acrobat 8 to have the "undefined character", but look perfectly fine in Acrobat 9 (ID CS4 is the culprit here - it doesn't happen in CS3).
    I've had elements drop-out, transparencies disappear, and previews corrupted. Is there an export method that is stable and reliable? Or do we have to take a step backward to using the Print command and then Distilling?

    What is to be done to ensure that PDFs from ID CS4 output correctly from a commercial printer?
    We have recently had a costly problem with two PDF ads (producer: Acrobat Distiller 8.1.0 Win) that I placed in a ID CS4 layout (Mac) and then exported to a new PDF 1.3 (producer: PDF library 9).
    Note: I have used the same ads before with InDesign CS3/Acrobat 8 workflow and they previewed and printed w/o problems!
    The new exported PDF from InDesign CS4 looked correct in Acrobat 9, but this time a few random characters from subset fonts (Swiss and Zurich) were missing in the printed ads. This was one costly mistake!
    After checking up the scarce information on this problem on the internet I opened the problematic InDesign CS4 PDF layout in Acrobat Reader 8 and the characters in the ads that previewed correctly in Acrobat 9, but were missing in print, were missing here as well!
    Then I tried to print the ID CS4 PDF layout from both Acrobat 8 and 9 to a HP PostSript2 laser printer and got missing characters from Acrobat 8 but all correct characters from Acrobat 9.
    This is a really disturbing problem since we have little control over how PDF ads that we get are produced as well as over the offset printing (RIP) workflow.
    In a nutshell, PDF production process that once worked in CS3 does not work reliably any more in CS4 and the only variable changed is the CS3 to CS4 upgrade on our side.
    Please help!

  • Reader hides filled in text in form fields

    Hi,
    I made a form for a client in Indesign and saved in Acrobat > Reader Extended PDF > Enable Additional Features.
    When opening in the Reader it hides filled in text in form fields. Only a click in the field will show the text. I want the filled in text be shown as you should expect. Like for example Apple's Preview does. When printing all the text is printed but on first view all the text seems to have dissapeared. Can somebody point out to me where I go wrong?
    I hope somebody can help me out.

    If the form was ever opened and saved with Preview, it is the likely culprit here. Preview corrupts PDF forms in a number of ways when it saves them. For more information, see: http://kb2.adobe.com/community/publishing/885/cpsid_88564.html
