Preview crashes consistently when opening certain PDFs

Preview crashes consistently when opening certain PDFs. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional and it is able to read the PDFs. Preview declares that "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." and crashes. It is less than graceful. I also have noticed that every time it crashes, I lose 40MB of disk space.
Other than individually marking "bad" files as acrobat files are there any solutions to this poor behavior by preview.
I also need to know how to recover the disk space. I have no idea where the files are being created. I checked /cores, but no joy.

Hi,
Try deleting the Preview and Sidebar preference files.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Now open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Preview.plist and the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.

  • Adobe Reader 9.4,10,11 crash when opening certain pdfs. Faulting module ntdll.dll

We've started having issues with a certain type of pdf file crashing reader anytime it's opened. It will open fine about 1/10 of the time, the rest of the time it either straight crashes or we get a message that a drawing error occured and the pdf isn't rendered properly. I've tested with Reader 9.4, 10.1.2, 10.1.4, and the latest 11 release. I've tested under WinXP x86 and Win7 x64 with the same results. It does apparently open fine under Windows Server 2008 R2 but the issue is occuring on our desktops and opening from the server was only a test.
I'm unable to share the pdf for others to research since it contains Protected Health Information. The pdf however does have a header with the patient info and then a graph similar to a EKG strip, the header always renders fine but when we get the error that a drawing error occured it's the graph thats corrupt. Sumatra/Foxit/Evince can open the document just fine. I've tried disabling every feature and plugin in Adobe Reader with no luck. I've tried to run the pdf through some tests and I did find there are 2 errors, both are "[error] Object shall end with 'endobj' statement" but I'm unable to find anything that can autocorrect the issue.
We have thousands of those pdf's, they were ran through a Print 2 PDF converter (Win2PDF 7.0.46 - 2.6.7.1465.3 http://www.win2pdf.com) using pdf version 1.4. Anyone have any ideas on what else to try? I'm at a loss and I'd rather not have to install an alternate PDF reader on 6k workstations (although with all the headaches Adobe Reader has caused me that would be a welcome change).

I've tried Acrobat and it won't open the file either, same app crash in ntdll.dll. But I know what you're saying but I don't have the source documents to run through conversion with another application.
I'm not sure how the process was performed but we had a vendor come in and convert all of our old clinical EMR data into PDF's and then index into OnBase. We are working with the vendor for a solution but so far they haven't found nothing. I recommended to them to update their Win2PDF program but I don't think thats an option on the thousand, if not millions of documents already converted.
Why is every other PDF reader able to open the file except Adobe Reader?

What kind of advertisement?  In Adobe Reader?  Can you post a screenshot of that: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1070933
Regarding the crash, can you try disabling Protected Mode through the registry: download, unzip, then run the registry script https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/49eeb48b-07c5-4502-984c-8a25259914fa

  • I get an error when trying to open certain PDF files in Lion on Mac.

I am having trouble opening CERTAIN .PDF files on my MacBook Pro. I am running Lion. The file is attached to a Gmail message as a standard .PDF file.
    This is my error:
"File "XX" cannot be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format Preview does not recognize."
I have also downloaded Adobe X reader to see if the compatibility issue is just with Preview. I get an error that the file is "damaged" and cannot be recovered. Meanwhile, the file downloads/opens just fine on Windows XP Office and iOS (on my iPad). So I am thinking that it must be some sort of compatibility issue with Lion.
So far, other .PDF files open on my MB Pro. I haven't tried all of my saved .PDF files, but I did try a couple.
Anybody have any suggestions? There seems to be an error with this particular file opening in Lion, but not with the same file opening on another operating system.

The issue mysteriously resolved itself. I shut down the computer, and the next day I booted back up and tried to open the same file, and everything was OK. Very bizarre, since I had opened it previously on this same MacBook. Anyway, anyone have any insight into what happened?

  • When I save eps file as a PDF it loses whole colours, but I can see the colours in preview and if I open the PDF in Photoshop. What is going on?

Has anyone else encountered this? I want to save a 2 colour logo (CMYK) as a print ready PDF but when it opens in Adobe Acrobat the black is missing or the green is missing. I can see all the colours there in preview and if I open the PDF file in Photoshop, all the colours as as they should be!!!

No.. sorry.. it does not seem possible effect .. if you can write you must be able to read..
Are you using the TC with user profiles?
What security are you using for disk access?
What happens if you do turn on full guest access to read and write.. ?
When the Mac that can save but cannot read does drop the file onto the TC,, can the other Mac's see that file? In other words is the file really there.. has it copied correctly. I still think if it has copied and you cannot read it back there is some permissions issues.
Try creating a new user on the Mac that has issues.. and see if the new user and read and write correctly. Make sure the new user has at least equal rights as the users on the Mac's that can read and write without issues.
Your intial question suggested this problem was spread over more than computer.. your second reply has reduced the issue to just one computer.. logically the issue is not the TC.. it is that computer. Ironically I have found logic for computer troubleshooting falls well behind voodoo.

I think this is done by the browser when it is saving a temporary file and there's already a file with that exact name in the temp folder.

  • Illustrator crashes when opening some PDFs

When opening some PDFs in Illustrator, Illustrator "Quits Unexpectedly"
It only occurs on one out of 15 of our Macs
I am running on all the latest updates both OS and Adobe
    It is very intermittent
It only seems to do it across a SMB network share
If the file is copied to the desktop it works fine
If the file is outlined and accessed from the network share it works fine
If the file is moved to another folder on the same network share it seems to work fine
I have repaired all fonts and cleared all font caches
This has recently had a full clean (using adobe's clean script) and re-install of Illustrator because of updating issues, but we have other Macs which have had to go through this also.
I have a crash log also but it is too big to post here
Any ideas before I wipe the lot and start again?

    It is not nonsense.
A pdf is supposed to be an end-format, not to be edited. Edits should always be done in the originating application, not in Illustrator. A native AI-file is not the same thing as a pdf. Editing pdfs in Illustrator can be a recipe for disaster and damage of the file-content.
The following is from Dov Isaacs at Adobe in teh Indesign mailinglist at Lassosoft:
"Adobe Illustrator is NOT, repeat NOT, repeat yet again NOT a general
purpose PDF (or EPS) editor. It cannot fully and properly edit PDF
(or EPS) files created any than by "save as" operations from the
equivalent or later version of Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator only
"knows" about PDF constructs that it itself generates. Other PDF
constructs may be modified or deleted without notice. Furthermore,
Illustrator does NOT support mixed color-space PDF files. And finally,
Illustrator does NOT make use of any fonts embedded in a PDF file. If
you "edit" a page of a PDF file in Illustrator, you must have the
same version of the same font on the Illustrator system as you have
on the system that creates the PDF.
We constant hear of problems in prepress due to misuse of Adobe
Illustrator as a PDF fixup program. You use Illustrator at your own
risk for this purpose which is absolutely not supported by
    Adobe Systems Incorporated!

  • I have problem when opening a pdf page, my mouse control is hijacked to that tab when im on other tab, i cant scroll or use the middle rollling button, i have to click at the pdf tab then my control over the mouse middle button is restored.

I think I have this problem even on earlier version. The thing is I set open link in new tab and not switch over to the opened tab. My habit is to open a pdf page in the background and let it load first. What happen is that when the pdf page finished loading ( i do not set to download it), it hijacks my middle mouse button control. When i scroll down or scroll up on my original tab, it wont scroll on the tab, but insttead it scrolls on the pdf tab. I have to click on the pdf tab, then i can use the scrolling function on other tabs back. As for when i opened several pdf tabs, it seems i have to click on the tab that just finished loading, that means several times until they all finish loading. It has been getting on my nerve lately. And all pdf trouble i search from google led to unable to open pdf, firefox hang or crash when opening a pdf and the likes.

core-el, i don't see the advantage of that or i can't figure out how i'm supposed to use it. for starters, i have to click the mouse in order to get "add bookmark here" to open, which is no different than clicking on the star in the location bar, or right-clicking on the page. there are also options in the bookmarks toolbar, but they all require clicking the mouse & holding down the right button, etc.
my goal is to use keystrokes only. typing on the keyboard, using both hands, using the space bar & my left pinky finger to tab over are all painless routines for me. as soon as i have to take my fingers off the keyboard & use the mouse, the pain begins.
as i said, in older versions of firefox, all i had to do to bookmark a page was click ctrl>d, then tab over & arrow down, when appropriate, to find the folder & add the bookmark. for me, as a touch-typist whose speed is between 60 & 80 wpm, this is lightning fast.
if i have this wrong, please correct me. i just see it as more mouse clicks that don't save me time or pain.

  • Acrobat Reader 9 Crashes PC When Opening 2 Documents Simultaneously (2D Graphics Acceleration Relate

    Hey all,
Weird issue. I noticed my Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 crashes when opening two PDF's simultaneously. The first one opens just fine. The second one, a new window opens, but there's only black inside the 2nd Reader window. It finally (after way too long) begins to show the document, and then I get a blue screen of death with a fault in nvlddmkm.sys, the nVidia display driver for my video card. It says it was unable to reset the display drivers, dumps the memory, and reboots. One interesting note is that if I close the "black" window before it blue screens, I can continue using the computer with no crash. It's only if I give it time to try to display.
I already found the temporary fix for this, which is disabling 2D Graphics Acceleration in the Acrobat Reader (Edit -> Preferences -> Page Setup). Fortunately I'm on a fast computer, so this doesn't affect performance much, but it still obviously isn't ideal, and I'd like to see the problem resolved.
I don't experience this problem with any other programs at the moment, so I'm thinking it's an issue with Adobe's product or possibly the nVidia drivers, but thought I should mention it and see if anyone has any other possible fixes where 2D Graphics Acceleration can remain enabled.
    Thanks all!

I am having the exact same issue... it's so frustrating! Does anyone have a solution to this?
Running CS4 on a Core i7 workstation w/ Win 7 64-bit, latest BIOS and video card drivers (ATI Radeon 4890). Acrobat is version 9.3 with all updates. It freezes for 30 seconds just as described, every single time you launch it.

  • FR Multiply When Opened in PDF

When opening certain reports in PDF the report multiplies 3 or 4 times. A 2 page report will repeat the same to pages 3 times such that the total output is 6 pages. Has anyone experienced this issues and/or know of a fix?
    Thank you,

Never mind. It is the result of multiple page options.

  • Adobe freezes opening certain PDF Files

    Hi!
We have a problem with the new Version Adobe Reader 9. When you open certain pdf files by double clicking them in Windows Explorer, Adobe Reader 9 Window opens and then freezes at 100% CPU load.
    Other pdf files are OK.
Open Adobe Reader first and then choose File - Open works too.
Common thing of both pdf files is that they were created out of Winword printing it against a pdf printer called "pdf x-change".
Open the file with Version 8 or Foxit Reader works.
    Any hints?

Sorry, no solution - i can not force everybody in the world to use adobe acrobat. Another customer had exactly the same problem with another pdf that was created by someone else

  • Crashes consistently when control clicking a selected object

CS4 InDesign crashes consistently when control clicking a selected object. Preferences have been reloaded, the program has been reinstalled, all without any effect towards this issue. Any suggestions?

Yeah, it was InDesign Hangs when right clicking on graphic.
There was a lot of head-scratching and the rather unsatisfying conclusion was when the OP removed ancient applications that might have been a choice for "Edit Original," then the problem went away.
I guess the conclusion is that right-clicking on an image iterates over the possible apps that can open an image (for Edit With and Edit Original) and does [something], and for some reason that [something] was hanging. Not clear what the app was. But presumably if you right click the file in the Finder and look at the list provided by Open With, it is similar.
Or you could try the suggestions I offered to the OP in that thread that it looks like he never used.

  • Black screen when opening in .pdf

I'm having problems with opening the C5-project in .pdf. Some people get a black screen when opening the .pdf file (version 9 or higher), most of the time it goes well, but 1 out of 10 times it doesn't work. I have know idea what could be the cause of the black screen (use of laptop?).
Now it is impossible to send this project to our stakeholders, because I don't know whether it works or not.
Does anyone recognize this and knows why this happens, and how to solve this?

There was a recent patch released by Adobe for Captivate 5 that addressed a similar black screen issue in Captivate SWFs.
You can get the patch here: http://www.adobe.com/support/captivate/downloads.html
It may turn out to fix your issue as well.
