Preview Disabled while capturing VHS or 8MM

While capturing video (either VHS or 8mm analog) I can not see what, if anything, I'm importing. I just have a black screen with the words "Final Cut Express" and a small apple logo below it. Also have color bars on the other window that says "Preview Disabled". Is there a way to monitor what you're importing while importing it? Otherwise, I have to wait till it's done to check out what's there.
Thanks for your help.

Hi(Bonjour)!
iMovie is smarther with capturing process and it's a good way to test camcorder/firewire cable/port and disk drive combo.
If you can achieve a capture in iM, we can focus on other problems than bad port/cable/camcorder setings, etc

  • Preview Disabled when Capturing in FCE

    Hi,
I'm having trouble capturing footage from some Mini-DV tapes my dad shot. I'm using a Mini-DV deck to capture from but everytime I insert the tape and try to capture the device plays the tape but no video is sent to the computer. I don't get an error message or anything like that. The video just doesn't show up and preview disabled is all I see in my capture window.
Any suggestions as to why this is happening??? It's really frustrating.

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in FCE, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QT are you using?

  • DV PAL shows Preview Disabled on Capture

I'm trying to get a PAL DV tape to capture in FCP. I keep getting the "Preview Disabled" message in the capture window. When I put in an NTSC tape it plays fine. I've changed all my capture settings to PAL including my firewire settings. I'm using a Sony HVR-M15U. I tried capturing in Imovie and was unable. The only place so far I've been able to capture in is Sorenson Squeeze, but the quality's not great from what I can tell. Anybody have a clue?
    Thank you,
    Alex

The deck does these things automatically, but then I went and set it to 50i and everything changed. Now it works. I guess this is what you told me to do basically.
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • Monitoring and previewing audio while capturing HDV

I have seen this discussion in the thread but there is no solution.
When capturing HDV via firewire, the audio is being previewed. This didn't used to happen. Is there a way to turn this off so that I can use other programs with sound like itunes? I can't find any way of doing this.
    Any solution?

so that I can use other programs with sound like itunes..
Buy another computer and use that for iTunes. Seriously.
If you start dedicating CPU cycles and RAM to listening to music while capturing, you are asking for trouble. Dropped frames, glitches, messed up files (pick one or more)
Yes, there is another way -uncheck the audio preview button.

  • Preview disabled when capturing on fcphd 4.5

    Hi,
I have a lab of emacs with fcpHD4.5 and I tried to capture on one of the computers with a canon camera and the preview is disabled. However, it captures and connects no problem on the other computers. Perhaps I need to download a patch that will fix the problem. I seem to remember having to repair that problem about two years ago, but I do not remember how.
    Thanks,
    Matt

This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Let us know how you get on!

  • FCEHD- preview disabled, can't see any vid in Capture Now

    Thanks in advance......
I am running G5 Quad and FCEHD. Installed correctly. Trying to hook my DV camcorder to capture vid. Camcorder has DV out (no straight firewire). From camcorder DV out, I go into ADS Tech A/V Link (recognized in Mac) to it's DV in. From A/V Link, I come firewire out into G5.
BUT.. when I start a project, I have tried every NTSC setting. Everything starts as it should ( I assume). I click on Capture to open capture window and it shows the colored bars and says "preview disabled". HUH??!?! Why is preview disabled? Am I supposed to be running a camera that has a firewire output on it, thus negating the need for this A/V Link??
I can click the spacebar and the camcorder playback starts to work, so there is some sort of sync there. Press again to stop and it stops properly. But I am not seeing any video. When I press the spacebar again, camcorder playback runs as it should. I then hit the Now button on the Capture window and a page comes up saying "waiting for sync". The it prompts that there is no video. HUH??!!! What am I missing or doing wrong??
Any help would be greatly appreciated. This looks like an awesome program but I can't tell if I CAN'T USE IT!!

It is a smaller output than the firwire, although it may technically be the same thing, they look completely different type plug looks-wise. So as i understand it, we are saying almost the same thing. Yep, you're right. MiniDV is the tape, sorry about that. But the connection coming out of my camcorder DOES NOT look like the firewire that plugs into theMac. Also, I have the input device which switches between analog and digital. It has : s-VHS in, composite (yellow RCA) in w/ l&r audio in, and the DV in- a small plug that does not look like the standard firewire, although it could be used for that. The back has s-VHS out, FIREWIRE Out, DV out, composite out. So I am familiar with the ins and outs and I have done this with other setups, very similar.
I have this input device under the assumption that I may not only be inputing my video but video from other sources as well and from other people as well.
Thanks for the input. And please forgive my ignorance.

  • Capture "Preview Disabled" and unable to "Capture Now"

Okay so I don't think I'm the only one but figgured I'd post just to see what the status is.
Today I went to capture some plain ol' DV footage from my Panasonic PV-GS500 minidv camcorder and was unable to... sorta.
If I try to capture I get the message "preview disabled" and at the top it shows (AV)(Unknown).
If I try to capture now i get the message "Attempt to capture video without a video device selected. Please select a video device in your capture presets and try again".
I'm using that NTSC Anamorphic easy setup and had no troubles in the past. I beleive that it might have something to do with QT 7.3 as others have suggested.
What makes it so strange is that if I log clips (monitoring on the cameras LCD itself) and then batch capture it appears to work fine. I can also send video to the Camera.
Finally to top it all off it captures just fine using iMovie - but this is hardly a solution by any means.
So anyone know what the deal is?

You might rey first simply resetting everything to make sure nothing is interfering with the deck control. Power cycle the camera as well. Perhaps if iMovie had been communicating with the camera, FCP may not be able to work correctly with it until it was reset.
I have read of several instance of similar problems having to do with recent upgrades, however. Hope you are not one of the unlucky ones having issues with QT , FCP, OS versions etc.

  • Preview disabled in log and capture

I am using Final Cut Pro 7 on the latest iMac i7.
I have a DVCam deck connected to the iMac via a firwire 800 cable.
There is a DV tape with DV footage in the deck.
I am able to control the deck from log and capture but the display is the colour bar window with PREVIEW DISABLED on it.
I have checked and double checked that my settings are correct, that video and audio are selected in capture settings etc etc.
Everything is selected correctly on the deck.
All mu suer preferences and presets are also correct.
I have trashed FCP preferences as well.
The content on the tape is viewable fine on the camera and on an external monitor.
    So, in summary:
I am unable to log and capture DV material from the tape even though the deck is controllable from log and capture window.

It's a Sony DVCam DSR 11 deck which will play mini DV or DvCam tapes recorded in PAL or NTSC.
I haven't changed anything on the deck at all since last usung it a few weeks ago with the G5 and Tiger OS. I simply unplugged the firewire and plugged it straight into the new iMac.
The old G5 was running FCP6, but because the G5 and Tiger (it's was a pre Intel machine) won't run FCP7 I decided to use this as the reason to upgrade and chage to the iMac i7 Lion OS.
The material in question is PAL DV on mini tapes.
The camera is a Panasonic DVX100A and only capapble of recording in SD DV.
All the selection switches are correct on the deck. I'm puzzled why I can get the image and capture from the camera, with the same cable, and yet not from the deck.
    Thanks Michael

  • Getting the following message on Final Cut Express "audio only capture selected video preview disabled" how can I get the video capture back?

I'm getting the following message on screen when attempting to capture video  "audio only capture selected, video preview disabled."  How can I get the view preview back?

FCE doesn't allow for audio only capture, it's in a twist somewhere.
    Try trashing the FCE preferences.

  • Preview window disabled when capturing FCP

A message comes up in the preview window saying 'preview disabled' even though the vtr os connected properly and can upload video: how do I enable it?

    Hello
I use a XM-2. That is the European/PAL version of your camera. I have had this problem since a year. I use a LaCie external 500 GB drive. Sometimes I could work around the problem using the internal drive. But now I think I have solved the problem. At least for me. There are two problems. First see to that you only have Quick Time 7 and not anything left from previuos versions. Look in the Receipts folder where you can find traces of old versions. (There is Apple message about this somewhere). Then shut down the computer, not restart, shut it down completly. Shut down the camcorder. Wait a minut or two so everything is quiet. Then start the camcorder. Wait for a while and then start the computer. When everything is up and running start FCE and hopfully you will not see the message Preview Disabled.
I hope it will work for you

  • "PREVIEW DISABLED" APPEARS WHEN CAPTURING IN DVCAM PAL ANAMORPHIC

I'm trying to capture from a dv cam tape, pal anamorphic. the setting "DV PAL Anamorphic" results in a Preview Disabled window.
I am using a re-installed Quicktime, but that doesn't seem to be the problem because regular dv tapes are captured with no "Preview Disabled" window.
I am using a Sony DSR-11 to capture. It accepts large formate dvcam tapes, which is the tape in question.
Is there something else that I should be doing?
Can I capture even though the "preview disabled" window shows?

Yes, I've been capturing using the setting DV PAL Anamorphic for small format dvcam tapes, and it has worked fine. I have tested this before and after the large format DVCAM tape that was giving me the problem. (It was shot using a Sony dsr-500.)
So, yes, the settings are correct. I am working with QT 7 on OSX 10.3.9, becasue it works fine with capturing the small format dvcam (PAL Anamorphic).

  • "Preview Disabled" how to resolve!!??

I have a Sony GV-D300 connected to my G5, and a video(PAL) monitor connected to that. When I capture from tape I control the deck from FCP log and capture window.
Sometimes I get no image on the capture monitor and no control from capture window. Instead I get a "preview Disabled" message.
I've tried "refreshAV devices and View-all frames" but still no image in the capture window. Is there a setting in pref's/
I've heard "mirror desktop " mentioned but can't find it anywhere
    regards alan (in uk)
    G5 1.25DP;   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GiG RAM; FCP Studio5.1

Some cameras/decks don't do well with FCP unless they were turned on before the computer boots. This has to do with how they respond to firewire bus polling.
Make sure the deck is plugged in and on before you boot the computer (NO hot swapping - firewire ports can get fried.)
The system should find the deck without problem which gives FCP plenty of time to connect with the deck during its startup processes.
If this doesn't help, sometimes a QT reinstall solves some lingering capture control issues.
Do a search here for 'Quicktime delete receipts and reinstall'. It is mentioned often enough to come up readily during a search.
    good luck.

  • FCE 3.5.1 & Preview Disabled

First let me provide my system specs to get those out of the way.
    MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Core2
    4GB RAM
Mac OS X 10.5.2 (All updates except Leopard Graphics Update: Made my fans run all the time!)
    Quicktime 7.4.5
    Final Cut Express 3.5.1
    Canon GL2
    Settings in FCE are:
Video out is set to Apple FireWire NTSC
Cache has been set to local /Users/user/Documents/FCE Documents/
Issue: When trying to capture video from the Canon GL2 I get "Preview Disabled" in the capture console. I get VTR OK message and I can control the camera but when I click on Capture Now I get "This operation could not be completed as there is no video" error message.
Based on posts on this and other forums I have tried:
    1. Deleting FCE prefs
    2. Removed all QT Receipts and attempt re-installing QT
Weird thing is that iMovie 08 works fine with the camera. So any thoughts or suggestions on how to resolve this?

Never mind the video out, what about the video in. What capture preset are you using? Any other devices connected to the computer at all?
