Preview does not display pdf properly

I have OS X 10.5.8 and Preview 4.2. Preview will not display a bank statement properly. Most of the content is missing. I initially thought this was the bank's fault, but the pdf statement displays OK on my work Mac using Adobe Acrobat Professional. On Preview, howerver, at work (OS X 10.4) it also does not display properly.
Can anyone suggest a fix, or does Apple read these discussions...? Thanks. Graham

"Preview is meant for previewing PDFs generated by OSX applications for printing.
OSX uses its own code to generate and display PDFs, not Adobe's code.
Adobe has been adding features to its PDF code that is used by some non-Apple software.
PDFs generated by such software may not display correctly with Preview, but will work with the latest Adobe Reader."

So, download and install the latest free Adobe Reader on your home Mac for these statements.

Thanks for your lengthy reminder dude, I have a similar Mac with yours. I suspect its a software fault because it happens after I upgraded to Lion, 10.7.2.

  • Safari does not display PDF files?

My Safari browser does not display pdf files.  Whenever a site I'm reading links to a pdf file, a new page open in black but without content.

    Try this ...
Open a Finder window then from the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go.
If you see the:  AdobePDFViewer plugin in the Internet Plug-Ins folder, move it to the trash.
Restart your Mac and try opening a PDF file.

  • Photosmart 2610 all-in-one Scan preview does not display

Recovering from a hard-disk crash, I've just reinstalled my Photosmart 2610 all-in-one using the driver and software package for Windows XP : rub_W01_Americas_Euro1_NB.exe. downloaded from the HP support site. All seems to be running well, except for a glitch when I try to scan: the document Preview does not display.  I have made certain that the Preview checkbox is duly selected, but nothing seems to help. It is the same whether I'm scanning a picture or a document. It also makes no difference whether I launch the scan from HP Director or from within another application.
Note that if I click Accept, the document (or picture) will indeed be scanned and saved. But I won't see it until I open it with some other application.
    Thoughts, anybody?
    Thanks!
    James

Hello James, welcome to the forums
I understand you are unable to see your scanned preview with your Photosmart 2610. I would suggest the guide below to use for troubleshooting steps for this issue.
Scanning Stops at the Preview Screen when the Printer is Connected to the Computer with a USB Cable ...
If the troubleshooting does not help resolve your issue, I would then suggest calling HP's Technical Support to see about further options for you. If you are calling within North America, the number is 1-800-474-6836 and for all other regions: click here.

  • Preview does not support PDF features

I have generated a number of PDF files in Adobe Acrobat that are questionnaires. The intent is to have the users fill out forms, click radio buttons and check boxes within the PDF and using buttons embedded on the questionnaire email them back to me. I have run into many problems with my questionnaires by Mac OSX users. It turns out when they open my Questionnaire (PDF) Preview launches instead of Adobe Reader. Evidentially Preview is the default application for PDFs. Preview does not support "calculations" "actions" for buttons including "submit a form" and does not auto font size in the forms they fill out.
Is there something in Preview that causes this issue that preview users need to do? It clearly appears Preview is not a good substitute for Abode Reader that is free and the standard for PDF viewing.

    Bobbbo wrote:
The issue I have run into is that Adobe has generated a way that you can distribute forms to a large group of people, they can in return send back the data that they filled out. Acrobat can then tabulate the data automatically. It is a very powerful tool.
I don't doubt it. However, it is a purely Acrobat solution. I'm sure there is other software that can do the same thing. Have you considered a web site instead? You could build an HTML page to distribute to people and it would have all the same features. Plus, it would work with any web browser.
The problem I have is Apple has decided to make Preview their default PDF reader application. When a Mac users opens the PDF file things may not work and they do not understand why. They get frustrated and quit filling out the form, therefore locking out getting data from all Mac users. This is an unnecessary burden to put on Mac users!
Then why don't you pick a method that would work with a stock MacOS X machine?
Adobe Reader is free so why compete with a free application??
Adobe Reader is free for end users to download. If Apple included it as part of MacOS X, the would have to pay Adobe many millions of dollars. Furthermore, while Acrobat Reader does have many nice features, it is a slow, bloated behemoth that fewer and fewer people want to use anymore. That is why there are so many other PDF viewers these days - people don't like Acrobat Reader.
I just think they should not have a fully functional PDF reader as the default application for PDFs.
Preview is fully functional. But Apple can't read Adobe's mind and support every new feature that Adobe throws in to try to keep customers. Your PDF solution is an Adobe solution. Adobe software just isn't as ubiquitous as it used to be. Times change. I suggest you look into some other method of form distribution, such as HTML and Javascript.

  • SAFARI DOES NOT DISPLAY PDF DOCS.

Does anyone know why my Safari browser suddenly does not show PDF docs in the browser window? It used to. I use Version 2.04. A message does appear that says "plug-in cancelled". I don't know why.

  • Mac Preview does not save PDFs correctly

When I try to save a webpage as a PDF using the Print dialog box on my Mac, ("Save as PDF"), the PDF is distorted. The first page is OK but on the second page, the text displays in a larger font and the text is cut off on the right. Apple tech says this is a browser problem, as it does not happen with Safari.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

PDFs will not display in Safari 5.7.1.   When I click on a PDF on a webpage all I get is a dark gray screen.   How do I solve this problem?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Safari 6 does not display pdf files!

No matter what website I go to if I need to display a pdf file especially on government sites which I deal with a lot being a paralized vet. I have to tell you I am disappointed with the last couple vers. of Safari. Half the time auto fill doesn't work. Many times i'll just type the name of the address and in past versions of Safari it would fill in the other stuff, www., .com, etc. Well not any more. I've switched to making Google Chrome since it displays pdf's. Apple, you cn do better than this!!! O, by the way I've been using Apple products since the iic, and I've been using the internet from it's beginnings. This is the first time I"ve had any complaint about Safari up until now it's been my browser of choice.

    David...
All browsers require some maintenance at one time or another, or troubleshooting whether it's Safari, or Chrome, Firefox.. etc. I've yet to have any issues with Safari 6 on Mountain Lion.
    For the PDF issue...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:   /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go then move the AdobePDF Browser plugin (or just PDF Browser plugin) from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.  Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
For autofill. Try troubleshtooting the Safari.plist (preferences)
Back to the Finder. Go > Go to Folder.
    Type this:   ~/LIbrary/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go the move the Safari .plist file to the Desktop. Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that that helped the autofill issue, move the .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
If that didn't work, Go > Go to Folder.
    Type this:  ~/LIbrary/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go the move the Cache.db file to the Trash. Quit then relaunch Safari. Try autofill.

  • PDF form filled in Preview does not display correctly in Adobe Reader/Acrobat?

I recently received a PDF form from my bank, and filled in the fields and affixed my signature. Saved the form. The recipeint of the form opened the PDF in Acrobat or Adobe Reader and the fields don't display the filled in form, unless you click in the field. After you click out of the field, the entry disappears. When you print the form from Reader or Acrobat, the fields are blank, but the signature prints.
Before saving the form from Preview, the fields appear normally in Reader/Acrobat.
Running Lion 10.7 and Preview 5.5.
    Anyone else have this happen?

I've since found out that there is somewhat of a "fix" that addresses a way to see the form entries in Acrobat, but doesn't resolve the problem the Preview creates. There is a script available on the Adobe forum that can be installed into Adobe Acrobat: http://blogs.adobe.com/pdfdevjunkie/2009/11/script_to_fix_mac_osx_previewa.html. The link and also explains the problem which should really be addressed by Apple. After installation, it will appear in the Edit menu of Acrobat. Once you open a Preview form, selecting "Fix Field Appearances" will repair the form so that the entries are visible.
Preview will still create bad forms, but this script will allow them to be visible in Acrobat. Unfortunately if you're sending a form to someone, there's no way to know if the recipient is using Preview or Acrobat and whether they even know about the problem. So you would have to create the form in Preview, open it in Acrobat, fix the field appearances and re-save. So it's not really a fix, just a work-around. Still don't use Preview for this reason.
I don't know if the script works with Adobe Reader, there's no mention that it does or doesn't in the forum entry.
