Preview doesn't close file when app is "closed"

Try this on Mountain Lion (any version):
1. Open a JPEG or PDF file in Preview, view the file (make sure it's a scratch file that you dont mind deleting).
2. Quit Preview.
3. Drag the just-viewed JPEG or PDF to the Trash.
4. Empty the Trash
At step 4, Finder will complain you cannot empty the Trash because the item you were viewing is "still in use".
5. Open Activity Monitor, locate Preview in the list of apps, Quit it (no need to force quit, normal quit will do).
6. Empty trash again. This time, the trash will empty correctly.
This is a bug. Of course, it's caused by the new "feature" of ML (and Lion) that keeps apps open after they are Quit so they can open faster (think iOS). However, clearly Preview has a bug (probably going back years) in that it clearly fails to close open files when it quits.nMy guess is this bug is old, but pre-Lion it never showed since the OS app clean up process closed the file anyway when the app quit. But today selecting "Quit" in the app menu DOESNT quit the app, and Preview sits around holding the file open, and so Trash cannot delete the file until you really, really quit Preview using Activity Monitor.
I posted this to Apple as a bug back in Lion, then again in the (then new) Mountain Lion. It's not been fixed. So either Apple can't fix it (which is pretty sad), or they dont CARE to fix it (which is worse, given how much money they make and how much I pay for Apple products).
Since "Squeaky wheels" get oiled, I'd appreciate if anyone else here is bugged by this to also post a bug report to Apple to try to get this annoying bug fixed.

Hi Tim,
I was having this problem with several apps wanting to stay open, so I made this script applicaiton and put it in the dock:
tell application "System Events"
set app_list to (name of every process whose visible is true and name is not "QuitApps" and name is not "Finder")
end tell
repeat with this_app in app_list
          tell application this_app to quit
end repeat
It has been working pretty well.

  • Quitting Preview doesn't close file

It used to be, using Snow Leopard, that if I opened an image/pdf file in Preview and then quit the application, the next time I opened it the former image would not reappear. Now under Lion there is a new behavior: relauncing the app reopens whatever file was open when I quit. I have to consciously close each image file before quitting Preview, or face them all again, a process that is a waste of time. How can I revert to the former behavior?

    You can turn this off:
    Open System Preferences
    General (under Personal)
Uncheck “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps“

  • Preview doesn't close files

After using Preview for a  few days, it hangs while opening a new file.  That is, its window is dim and a circular icon keeps spinning  forever. The only way to interrupt this and start over is to Force Quit Preview, even though the force quit funtion des not identify preview as 'not  responding'.
What is going on, and how does this relate to the new feature of Lion where apps retain their 'state' between executions??

It appears to me that network file access is buggy in Maverick.
In my case I have a USB Drive attached to airport extreme (new model) and when I open folders on that drive they all appear empty. If I right click and I select get info after a few minutes! I get a list of the content.
It makes impossible navigate a directory tree.
File access has been trashed in Maverick.
They have improved (read broken) Finder. I need to manage a way to downgrade to Lion again.

  • Preview doesn't display files.

    Hi all,
Preview is not displaying files when I open them.  What happens is, when I click on the file to open it, the animation for opening the window will appear and there will be an outline of a window onscreen (a literal window) that I can resize and manipulate like I can do for a working one.  Preview just won't allow me to view the content, which is really unusual.
I've rebooted it in Safe Mode and found that it works then, but when I restart it, it will revert back to being unusable.
Please help me, I'm a student and PDF files are vital to my studying!  Thank you

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Preview doesn't unlock files

    When I do the following
-use preview to open several images at a time,
-close them without quitting the application
    -move the images to trash

I very often get some images that are still locked and so the finder refuses to delete them. If I quit preview, they are unlocked properly and I can then delete them.
It is not very important, but I don't really understand this erratic behavior. Why is it such a problem for preview to unlock images properly when they are closed?

  • Preview.app 6.0.1 does not clear picture list when app is closed  OS X 10.8.2

After quitting preview.app the app retains image file id rather than clearing the list. I am unable to clear out previously view pictures.

Do you mean that when you quit Preview it "remembers" the images that were open, so that it reopens them the next time?
This is the default behavior for apps in Lion and Mountain Lion.
This can be changed, either temporarily or definitively.
To prevent this in one occasion, hold down the option (a.k.a. "alt") key and in the File menu you'll notice that "Quit" has become "Quit and discard windows". If you choose this, Preview (and most any application, for that matter - at least those updated for Lion or ML) will discard all windows and will start fresh the next time.
To make the above the common behavior (Caveat: this will affect ALL applications):
go to System Preferences->General and check the box that says "Close windows when quitting applications".

  • [SOLVED] setopt noclobber ! doesn't overwrite file when used in cron

Basically I have noclobber set to true in .zshrc... this prevents accidently overwriting files with the pipe command...
When I run the command in a console without the >! command and noclobber set to true it properly detects the file exists and fails to overwrite it.
    curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg > /home/geota/geota/.worldmap
    zsh: file exists: /home/geota/geota/.worldmap
Now when I exchange the pipe command to >! it properly overwrites the file when executed manually in the console... however if I have this command set in my crontab it instead of properly overwriting the file it just pipes it to a file named ! in my home directory...
    # Reload Background Image
    */30 * * * * curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg >! /home/geota/geota/.worldmap && xfdesktop
I have tried a few different slight alterations to no avail such as
    $(curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg >! /home/geota/geota/.worldmap)
    `curl http://static.die.net/earth/mercator/1600.jpg >! /home/geota/geota/.worldmap`
Is there anyway I can get cron to excute the command and overwrite the file without setting noclobber to false?

crontab provided by arch is dcron which is very basic:
man crontab wrote:Unlike other crond/crontabs, this crontab does not try to do everything
under the sun.  Frankly, a shell script is much more able to manipulate
the  environment  then  cron  and I see no particular reason to use the
user's shell (from his password entry) to run cron commands  when  this
requires  special  casing of non-user crontabs, such as those for UUCP.
When a crontab command is run, this crontab runs it  with  /bin/sh  and
sets up only three environment variables: USER, HOME, and SHELL.

  • AppleWorks closes accidentally when document is closed

When I close 400 page document AppleWorks closes (box appears asking if I wish to reopen or report).
Then when I reopen application and re-open the document, box asks if I wish to "recover changes because the document wasn't closed properly…" (even though the documant had been saved before closing).

Quoting Peggy's letter (PL) and my response (H):
(PL)The cause AppleWorks crashed (quit unexpectedly) the first time could be one or more of many. The most common would be a corrupt element in the document, usually a font or graphic. As this is a long document, AppleWorks may have been trying to do too many things at once or you tried to close it when it wasn't quite done doing something. Continued crashing would indicate the first cause.
First, whenever AppleWorks crashes, there is some corruption of the AppleWorks preference files & they need to be deleted before you re-launch AppleWorks. To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.
    (H) OK I've done this. Note your suggestion:"(PL)Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars)."
    (H) The only files were Excel in HD > Users > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks. I trashed them.
(PL)I recommend trying a thing or two to "clean up" the document itself.
Instead of opening this document, create a new, blank document & "Insert" (from the File menu) the problem document or drag the icon of the old document on to the the open blank document. If the corruption is in the file, not any elements, this may fix it. Save the new document with a different name.
    (H) Both options (insert. drag) resulted in AppleWorks crashing.
(PL) If this didn't work, open the problem document or use the newly created one & go to File > Save As… & choose AppleWorks 5 as the file type, again with a different name. Now open this AppleWorks 5 document in AppleWorks 6. This will often strip mild corruption. You do not need to have AppleWorks 5 to do this.
    (H) did this however AppleWorks still crashes when document is closed. One change has been noticed, when re-opened no longer says doc was closed improperly. Once I indicate don't try recover "lost " changes since I knew I had made none.
If the new document still has problems, remove any graphic elements. You can do this one at a time or all at once & see what happens. If you don't have any graphics or this doesn't work, try changing the font.
I don't know of any "graphic elements" unless I copied a footnote or quote and pasted it in. This document has been in the works for years.
I changed the font from palatino to Times New Roman and then redid the 5.0 to 6.0 Still crashes when doc is closed.
Well Peggy I'm most appreciative of all your woderful suggestions but still no cigar!

P.S. I have your "Pages" iWorks suggestion in my hip pocket waiting for after Steve Jobes' speech Jan 9. Hoping that might offer an improved software?

  • Preview doesn't open files upon reboot

I have the autolaunch feature set in Lion, and when I reboot and Lion attempts to open all of the Preview files that were open before reboot, I keep getting error messages that I don't have permission to open these files. I have not changed any permissions on any of these files. Has anyone else run into this and is there a fix?

In the Finder, select one of the image files you want to open with Preview. Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu or the File menu. In the "Open with" section, choose Preview from the pulldown menu if it's not already selected. If it is selected, choose another application (any other), then re-select Preview. Click the "Change All" button and close the dialog.

  • Excel, Safari   apps - reopen file when app is launched

I close my XLS (Office 2011, 14.1.3) spreadsheets.  Then exit Excel.  When I re-start Lion and launch Excel - my previously closed spreadsheets are re-opened.  I've noticed this occurs w/ Safari - previously opened tabs / windows open when I launch the browser.  Is there a setting to prevent or control this?

    Uncheck this option:
System Preferences > General > 'restore windows when quitting'
You can also leave that preference checked and avoid the restore behaviour by simply pressing 'option' key when you quit (or opt-cmd-q).
Note that if you do uncheck the preference box, quitting with option key will have the opposite effect (in other words, it will restore windows when you reopen that app).
