Preview doesn't display files.

Hi all,
Preview is not displaying files when I open them.  What happens is, when I click on the file to open it, the animation for opening the window will appear and there will be an outline of a window onscreen (a literal window) that I can resize and manipulate like I can do for a working one.  Preview just won't allow me to view the content, which is really unusual.
I've rebooted it in Safe Mode and found that it works then, but when I restart it, it will revert back to being unusable.
Please help me, I'm a student and PDF files are vital to my studying!  Thank you

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • The Video app in OS7 update doesn't display file names.

The Video app in OS7 doesn't display file names under the image.
How can I identify my video files without having to open each file to access the file name.
Is there something I am missing or is this just an omission in the OS7 upgrade.
I am a music teacher and this lack of file names makes the app virtually useless for use in the classroom.

Agreed. This has been a problem with TV Shows in the Videos app since forever, but at least it used to put the name under Movies. Now instead fixing it for TV Shows in iOS 7 they've done the opposite and made Movies fail the same way as TV Shows always have!
Apparently it still lists the title for Home Videos, so the best work around for now is probably to reclassify all your Movies as Home Videos. Sigh.
Apple's Videos app development team seem to be unaware that iTunes can store and play movies and TV shows that don't come from the iTunes Store, videos that don't have covers, and that need to display the names and other info from iTunes for them. They also seem to not understand that the default grid view for videos is totally inadequate for users with scores or hundreds of movies and TV shows that they home share to their iPads and iPhones from iTunes. The Videos app needs a list view at least, as well as a grid view.
All they have to do is look at how the Apple TV handles the same files and meta-data from iTunes and provide something similar for the iPad and iPhone. Why after all these years they still don't get that I have no idea.

  • Preview doesn't display bmp image

Using Bootcamp, I saved a BMP image file of a windows screenshot. I can view the screenshot with Tiger & Preview properly, but when I open the file with Leopard & Preview, the entire image is blank except for the windows image resize buttons in the top right corner.
Using Leopard and Quicktime, I can view the image. Also I can display the image properly using Microsoft Word on Leopard. I cannot see the image when I insert it into Pages on Leopard.
Why is the BMP file viewable with only certain applications? Does Preview, under Leopard, no longer support BMP files?

I tried using the link you provided to report the problem to Apple, but it wouldn't log me in. Do you have to be a developer to use Bug Report? If so, perhaps a developer could confirm this as a problem, and report it.
I posted the offending BMP file to my iDisk account: http://idisk.mac.com/rush1-Public
Problem: On a Leopard system the BMP is not displayed properly using Preview or Pages, but it is viewable using QuickTime or MSWord.

  • Preview doesn't display images to fit window

I'm running OSX 10.6.8 on a 27" iMac, and when I enlarge the Preview window to fit the screen (by dragging the corner), the images don't enlarge. They seem to be stuck at about 1920 pixels wide (at a guess) instead of 2560 wide. I can zoom in, but I want the images to exactly fit the window. Preferences > Scale large images to fit window doesn't work, neither does View > Zoom to fit (which is grayed).
Any suggestions as to how I make images fit the window?

    Hi, Guy Burns,
What is the resolution of the images you try to enlarge?
    My guess:
If the resolution of your images is lower then 2560 wide (your screen resolution), the window will open with the exact size and resolution of the picture (for instance 1920 wide). i.e. One pixel on your screen equals one pixel of your picture. You can indeed enlarge the window and zoom in, but then you are enlarging pixels, the image will get less sharp.
The "Scale large images to fit window" function, is meant for "large images" as the name implies, so images with a larger resolution then your screen resolution. With this function, you can reduce the size of images that would otherwise not fit entirely on your screen, to the necessary size to view the whole picture as big as possible. So this function does not work if the "scale" is 100% or more.
In slideshow mode however, there's a function to automatically adapt the size of smaller images to "full screen", and also "quicklook" (spacebar) supports full screen mode.

  • Preview doesn't close file when app is "closed"

Try this on Mountain Lion (any version):
    1. Open a JPEG or PDF file in Preview, view the file (make sure it's a scratch file that you dont mind deleting).
    2. Quit Preview.
    3. Drag the just-viewed JPEG or PDF to the Trash.
    4. Empty the Trash
At step 4, Finder will complain you cannot empty the Trash because the item you were viewing is "still in use".
    5. Open Activity Monitor, locate Preview in the list of apps, Quit it (no need to force quit, normal quit will do).
    6. Empty trash again. This time, the trash will empty correctly.
This is a bug. Of course, it's caused by the new "feature" of ML (and Lion) that keeps apps open after they are Quit so they can open faster (think iOS). However, clearly Preview has a bug (probably going back years) in that it clearly fails to close open files when it quits.nMy guess is this bug is old, but pre-Lion it never showed since the OS app clean up process closed the file anyway when the app quit. But today selecting "Quit" in the app menu DOESNT quit the app, and Preview sits around holding the file open, and so Trash cannot delete the file until you really, really quit Preview using Activity Monitor.
I posted this to Apple as a bug back in Lion, then again in the (then new) Mountain Lion. It's not been fixed. So either Apple can't fix it (which is pretty sad), or they dont CARE to fix it (which is worse, given how much money they make and how much I pay for Apple products).
Since "Squeaky wheels" get oiled, I'd appreciate if anyone else here is bugged by this to also post a bug report to Apple to try to get this annoying bug fixed.
    --Tim

    Hi Tim,
I was having this problem with several apps wanting to stay open, so I made this script applicaiton and put it in the dock:
    tell application "System Events"
set app_list to (name of every process whose visible is true and name is not "QuitApps" and name is not "Finder")
    end tell
    repeat with this_app in app_list
              tell application this_app to quit
    end repeat
It has been working pretty well.

  • Preview doesn't open files upon reboot

I have the autolaunch feature set in Lion, and when I reboot and Lion attempts to open all of the Preview files that were open before reboot, I keep getting error messages that I don't have permission to open these files. I have not changed any permissions on any of these files. Has anyone else run into this and is there a fix?

In the Finder, select one of the image files you want to open with Preview. Choose "Get Info" from the contextual menu or the File menu. In the "Open with" section, choose Preview from the pulldown menu if it's not already selected. If it is selected, choose another application (any other), then re-select Preview. Click the "Change All" button and close the dialog.

  • Yosemite finder doesn't display file count?

I just installed Yosemite (10.10.2) on a clean drive in my MacBook Pro 6,2 and I'm trying to figure out how to get Finder to display a count of files at the bottom of the finder windows. I'm used to it displaying something like "356 files. 49 files selected." Is this functionality still available? I've looked in Finder prefs as well as the customize toolbar and sidebar areas. No luck.
    Any ideas?

Choose Show Status Bar from the View menu.

  • Finder in Lion doesn't display files...HELP!

So I just upgraded to Lion finally and it's pretty solid except for the fact that I have googled, searched, searched again and searched more to figure out why m files are not displaying in Finder.  When I download a file, I can mouseover the download icon on my taskbar and open it, but when I try to open my downloads folder, it's blank.  So's my picture folder, documents, even applications.  My desktop folder can see the 3 files on my desktop but this is a pain.
Is there an issue with my system or am I just being a complete idiot?? I've adjusted view options and still nothing.  I can click on devices and everything displays properly, but as soon as I look under anything in FAVORITES, nothing.  I can even view shared systems but nothing in favorites.
    This is very frustrating.

Most likely the borked Finder updater. OPTION-click & hold the Finder's Dock icon and select RELAUNCH when that occurs. If it continues, file s but report with Apple.

  • Quitting Preview doesn't close file

It used to be, using Snow Leopard, that if I opened an image/pdf file in Preview and then quit the application, the next time I opened it the former image would not reappear. Now under Lion there is a new behavior: relauncing the app reopens whatever file was open when I quit. I have to consciously close each image file before quitting Preview, or face them all again, a process that is a waste of time. How can I revert to the former behavior?

    You can turn this off:
    Open System Preferences
    General (under Personal)
Uncheck “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps“

  • Preview doesn't close files

After using Preview for a  few days, it hangs while opening a new file.  That is, its window is dim and a circular icon keeps spinning  forever. The only way to interrupt this and start over is to Force Quit Preview, even though the force quit funtion des not identify preview as 'not  responding'.
What is going on, and how does this relate to the new feature of Lion where apps retain their 'state' between executions??

It appears to me that network file access is buggy in Maverick.
In my case I have a USB Drive attached to airport extreme (new model) and when I open folders on that drive they all appear empty. If I right click and I select get info after a few minutes! I get a list of the content.
It makes impossible navigate a directory tree.
File access has been trashed in Maverick.
They have improved (read broken) Finder. I need to manage a way to downgrade to Lion again.

  • Ibook doesn't display files/dock etc.

Hi. I hope I'm in the right forum. My iBook is about 3 years old, I bought it used.
A couple days ago the copy/paste function stopped working (I could copy/cut, but I couldn't paste anything)
I restarted it, but ever since it starts up as normal (chime and everything), I see the starting mac ox blue bar loading, log in as normal, see my desktop background and the courser, and that's it. I can use volume, brightness keys, and caps lock blinks when I click it, but NO files, no dock, no gray bar on top (where the time usually is)
I have no idea of computers, but following some things here in the forum, I already tried the following:
starting up in safe mode makes absolutely no difference.
when I try starting holding down apple+s, then type fsck -fy = it says at the end : the volume start up disk appears to be ok.
I don't have the install disks.
Does anyone know what that is? I do have all my life on this laptop, pictures and journals and contacts / contracts, and recent pretty important work, a lot of it not backed up (I know, and I was ready to do it, and now it's too late)
Is there anything else I could try? Are my files still on there somewhere?
I'd be so so grateful for help!
    Have a very nice day.

"Sounds like an OS hiccup of some kind."
Yes actually, the laptop sometimes goes to the background screen after log in (not showing anything else) then going back to the log in screen, sounds like it goes in circles when it requires me to log in on and on.
If I have the start up disks and do archive and install OS, will it look like it looked like before that happened, like will my settings and files will be all the same? How do I make sure that I don't erase anything ?
    Any other ideas ?
    Thank you so far

  • Finder doesn't display files on external hard drives

    Hello-
I have two external hard drives and recently I've been moving a ton of data around.
Once two days ago and now again today, the files on those hard drives did not appear in the finder window. Searches yeilded results in that window fine, but the window was blank upon opening.
Two days ago I addressed it with a disk repair. I'm not sure that's what did it though. This appears to be a finder problem.
Earlier I had the same problem. It's nothing to do with the disks; when going to info, it shows the data is all there and searches yield results. But when backing out of the results, the finder window would again be blank.
I have tried: Restarting, starting in safe mode and running disk repairs on the disks, relaunching finder about a hundred times, logging out and back in, clicking on the window and selecting view options, then fiddling with them (this may have corrected the issue on the disk with less data on it, but then again, it might have been coincidence, but the files on that one showed up just then).
Just as I typed this, the beach ball showed up, the window hitched a couple of times, and lo, all my files appeared again.
What appears to be happening, is that Finder is hanging up. I hypothesize this because I tried to eject the disk and coudln't because the error message said Finder was busy with it. Yet Finder wasn't showing my files. That suggests that Finder was balking. The disks were fine, the data is there, it's just that Finder wouldn't show it. Yet when I waited several minutes, the files appeared, suggesting Finder was merely running very slowly or otherwise suboptimally.
Is there anyway to run a repair on Finder itself? This problem is recurrant.

I don't think it's your finder, it is the speed of your hard drive reading those files on the drive.  When you try to access the hard drive take a look at the bottom right corner you will see a spinning icon it will continue until it has read the drive.  Normally you should wait for that to stop then you should see the data.
