Preview eats up CPU usage/sudden spikes

Hello I'm an owner of MBP 13" 2011 10.7.2
When running Preview to open large pdf files, one of the mdworker processes spikes up to huge CPU usage, as well as Preview process.
Thus, I'm having hard time reading pdf files. Is there something I can do to prevent this?
Thanks.

It looks like you have more than enough RAM, and your system should be able to handle most documents. But 384MB is quite large; in many cases, authors may choose to chapterize a large document in order to cut down on really large PDFs. For scale, a 900 page PDF book is often no bigger than 35MB.
In short, the graphics haven't been optimized, and you'll have difficulties opening a document like this on a desktop computer.
My suggestion: chapterize upcoming documents (if you can), or save as another type of document in Preview/PDF/Save to Postscript.

  • Safari webpage preview fetcher high CPU usage, runs hot Macbook Pro, fan

Even when turned off in Safari Preferences, safari webpage preview fetcher starts up and starts using high CPU % (99.8% when checked on Activity Monitor!). Macbook starts running hot, fan starts running on high. You can force quit safari webpage preview fetcher in Activity Monitor, but it starts itself back up again!

Well, I disabled safari webpage preview in preferences, and rebooted, zapping the pram and it hasn't restarted, and I haven't had the high fan / hot running so yay!

  • Telnet eating up CPU usage

I was noticing that my fan was running rather strongly and my CPU temp was around 171 F. consistently. I went to Activity Monitor and noticed that "telnet" was using about 92% of my CPU. So I quit that process and everything has quieted down. Everything seems to be working (mail and safari anyway), and all is well. What is telnet anyway and is it something I need and if I don't is there a way to get rid of it? First time that I ever noticed it. What could cause this and will telnet start everytime I start up. I use a motorola roadrunner modem directly connected to my computer, but could use airport if needed (if this has anything to do with it).
    Thanks in advance.

If it wasn't showing up during beta-testing perhaps it is one of those things that crept in at the last minute when something else was sorted out, or perhaps it only occurs in conjunction with some other third party software or fonts.
Certainly seems to be causing a lot of people some grief, though.
As you will see in the threads mentioned, unfortunately a number people seem to have gone down the validation/ duplication removal route without actually resolving the problem.
    All thoughts greatly valued.

  • CPU Usage Spikes - Crashes ITunes

I've been using Itunes for about a year, and over the past week, my CPU usage will spike at 100% while playing Itunes, causing the song quality to skip and play as if it was a scratched CD. I updated from 4.9 to 5.0 (erasing all existing Itunes programs first) and the problem still happens. I'm not running anything else other than Itunes, and the usage still spikes to 100% causing the problem.
    Please help!

I'm having the same problem. I've isolated it in a number of ways trying to resolve it.
It always happens 13 seconds into playing a track. This applies whether it plays from the beginning, 1 min into the track or if I make is jump to different places. Each time, once it has played 13 seconds (ie first 13 secs or if I jump to 1 min immediately it will be at 1:13 or if I play 6 secs then jump to 1:30 it will happen at 1:37). The CPU spikes to 100%, pausing everything and leaving a 3 or 4 sec silence.
This happens regardless of track length. So a 1 hour dj set will have the CPU spike at 13 secs and then be fine for the next hour.
It seems to me to be related to some sort of buffering or something similar in Itunes. I have worked out that once it has caused the CPU spike I can restart the same track and it will play through without a hiccup. If I play the next track and then come back to the first track, though, it will glitch at 13 secs again. I can also make it glitch on a replay of the first track without playing any others by changing the tracks that are to come after it in the playlist. This seems to suggest it is related to buffering the coming track(s).
I can make the silent gaps go away by reducing the size of my music library considerably. It is over 45 gig now. If I reduce it to below 20 gig the CPU spiking occurs but not at 100% and so not causing the silences. The problems is still there, though, and itunes has played my 40 gig library fine for months without any such problems.
Recent changes have included a few software installs. I have removed those that I could (eg Nero) but I do still have one photo editing programme that I need for a current job. I had removed quicktime from my startup but seeing a suggestion that this caused such a problem I have put it back. This has not fixed the problem for me.
I have also bought a shuffle and would have probably run the software related to that. If you had a problem when you added a mini perhaps it's due to some sort of error arising from the software coming with new ipods when used with existing itunes installations? Just a guess.
I'm running Itunes 4.7.1.30. I had thought about upgrading to 5 but it seems to be causing more problems and it seems it doesn't resolve this one.
If anyone can help with this I would be most grateful as it is making Itunes unusable on my computer. I'm going to have to go back to playing cds!!!

  • Shockwave Flash 11.6.602.168 100% CPU usage

    Hi,
Our computer has 100% CPU usage every time we get in websites that utilize Flash, or watch youtube.
    Browser: FF 19.0
    Flash 11.6.602.168
Computer: HP Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz, 3G memory, up-to-date BIOS and other drivers.
    Graphic card: EVGA GeFprce 6200
    Windows 7 32 bits
This window is freshly installed, has AVG on. We do not have many software's installed, except MS Office. All fans and CPU are clean. The computer runs fairly fast: we tried opening multiple FF tabs simultaneously, plus Excel, Word, Solitaire etc. without any problems. However, whenever we get into websites with Flash, the CPU uasage goes to 100% and stays there. Memory usage has always been stable, around 30%. We have tried the following steps, but it hasn't gotten better:
    - Turned off all applications, opened only one tab with that website.
    - Updated all drivers and applications: FF, Flash, Graphic card etc.
    - Turned ON and OFF hardware acceleration for both Flash and FF, also tried to turn one On, the other OFF, and vise versa.
    - Disabled all add-on's, extensions and Plug-in's, except Flash.
    - Uninstalled and reinstall FF and Flash; restarted several times.
    - Temporarily turned OFF protected mode.
    - Uninstalled FF, Flash, then installed IE 9, then Flash for IE: didn't work.
    - Uninstalled IE 9, Flash, then installed IE10 then reinstalled Flash for IE: also didn't work.
    - We do not keep browsing history.
Examples of websites that we have had problems with: pbskids.org, barbie.com, and other school websites for kids to do homework or watch youtube.
While in many websites such as CNN.com, yahoo.com, when we opened it, the CPU usage did spike, but came back to 1-5% within 5 seconds.
This computer is for our kids. Do we really need to buy an i5 or i7 computer so the kids can play and do homework? Or is there any other way that we can do?
    Thank you

Moving to the Using Flash Player forum, as this isn't specific to the Beta.
In the Youtube video, if you right-click and choose Show Video Info, it will show you whether you're using Hardware Acceleration for both Video Rendering and Video Decoding.
If you're seeing Software Rendering and/or Software Decoding and you're watching a high-def video, it's going to use a ton of CPU.
Do you see similar behavior in other browsers?  (Chrome, IE)  The Flash Player distributions are actually quite different for each browser.  It would be an interesting data point.

  • Microsoft.Exchange.AddressBook.Service.exe 100% CPU Usage

    Hi,
We have an exchange server 2010 and the Microsoft.Exchange.AddressBook.Service.exe used 100% CPU Usage suddenly. However, after rebooting the server, the CPU Usage of the above .exe is back to normal. Client cannot connect to the exchange server during
the high CPU Usage of the above .exe.
Any ideas for the above problems? Thank You.

    Hi
Microsoft.Exchange.AddressBook.Service.exe is related to OAB function.
Maybe mobile or client fails to download will cause this problem.
What was the fix for this?

  • Flash player in Chrome high CPU usage

    Laptop Specs:
    Windows 7  64-bit
    Lenovo Thinkpad T410
    Intel Core i5 CPU  m 520 @2.4 GHz
    8.00 GB RAM
This started happening a couple months back (September ish). My laptop run perfectly fine with game play, watching HD movies, running photoshop, etc. It's only when I start up Google Chrome that the CPU usage would spike. It remains under 80% though. With normal internet surfing my CPU usage will teader around 30-40%. When I watch videos via chrome, that's when I have problems. For example, when I watch a "Walking Dead" episode from AMC.com, my CPU usage will spike to 90-100%. After a minute or two my computer will do a hard shut down, as if I pulled the battery out. I'm guessing it is because my CPU is being overworked and over heated. I thought this problem was only with Chrome but when I pulled up the video with internet explorer the same thing happened. I've cleaned my CPU & fan and bought a laptop cooling fan, no help. I've disabled the multiple flash plugins on chrome, no help. I've updated chrome and flash, no help. What should I do? I've read online that this is a common issue. Has there been a solution yet?

    Same problem here:
         - x86 Family 15 Model 6 Stepping 5 GenuineIntel ~3000 Mhz.
         - Intel 82945G Express Chipset Family/128MB
         - 4gb RAM
         - Windows XP
The problem is obvious on pages with Flash ads, YouTube (auto resolution), etc. I have the same problem with IE 8; I am guessing, it is not related to the browser.
Ordinary pages with Flash ads keep the CPU at 15%, at least, when not visible; when visible it oscillates from 15% to 90%.
In YouTube the CPU goes to 80% when the video is visible and decreases to 20% when not visible, but it spikes to 30%.
My other, I7, computer has no problem.
Adobe, I hope you will come with a solution. An algorithm should not rely on computer's power.

  • SPAN session CPU usage

    Hi,
A while ago we tried doing logging on some ACLs on a 3750X running version 15.02SE. After some time the CPU spiked and caused a memory leak which forced the switch to reboot. I did some reading and found that the CPU usage does spike when logging on ACLs, there are ways to rate limit the logging but that doesn't give full visibility into what is going through the switch.
I'm guessing the alternative is running a monitoring session.
My question about the SPAN session is, will it greatly impact the CPU of the switch the same way ACL logging did? And if so, will monitoring 10 Vlans in both directions and sending them to a single destination cause the same type of crash as we experienced with ACL logging?
If we can do the monitoring sessions, it would be a good workaround seeing as the logging interval will give us limited visibility.
    Cheers,
    Waqas

Why do you need three different browsers running at the same time? Maybe that's causing a problem or what your are doing with them.
Suppose you create a new user account and log into that account. Does this problem persist? If not then you have a problem with file corruption in your account. Could be preference files for the browsers, could be caches, could be both.

  • Erratic CPU usage out of hours

    Hello all.
    I have a xserve running 10.5.6
    2.8GHz quad
    4GB ram
    build 9g55
    services
    - afp
    dns
    ical
    ichat
    netboot
    nfs
    OD
    smb
    sw update
    web
and ive notice that over the past week, as soon as a few clients connect to the server the CPU usage will spike really high and not return to normal idle.
EG. Last thursday we had 180users connect to the web service and i saw the usage spike to 80% then friday it sat at ~30% all day then yesterday when there was nobody onsite or connecting to the server the CPU usage spiked to double the original ~30% >> 60%
I can simply reset the server and values will return to normal but there has to be a reason..
one thing i have noticed is that when the CPU load sits there when its high it will create a saw tooth look

Really?! That's really encouraging, I wasn't aware that it would be so IO bound, since I'd seen it behave as described when working only across both internal drives - I might have expected it on external Firewires. Thank you so much for the information Patrick, I'll be looking into RAIDs in the new year.

  • High CPU Usage on Windows 2000

Is it normal for my CPU usage to spike to 100% everytime a page loads? I'm doing some minor load testing on the example StockPortal with 30 users, and my CPU usage keeps maxing out. Even when I'm the only one on it, the CPU usage spikes to 100%.

    Chris,
I asked around here yesterday. A couple of our performance test guys said
they had seen similar symptoms on some machines when:
    (1) Pages may be getting compiled on every hit. As a result,
you will see CPU getting pegged.
They have to make sure the ServletReloadCheckSecs is not set to 0 (in
    config.xml).
    (2) They also have to set "pagecheckseconds" in weblogic.xml to non zero.
setting them to 300 secs may be appropriate....
    Sincerely,
    Daniel Selman

This is WLS 6.1 sp1, WLP 4.0 sp1. we are testing against theout-of-the-box stockPortal

Unfortunately, we are seeing the same phenomenon on a DELL 6450,

The webserver CPUs peg at 92-98%, login response times are 17sec andpage

    at all.
On the other hand, the DB servers (same config) are struggling to reach5%

    utilization.
we've tweaked threads, socket readers, heap size, logging, cxn pools, and
    everything
    else we can think of.
    anyone have any ideas?

100% CPU utilization is not necessarily a bad thing, it depends onhow
competing OS tasks are being scheduled by the OS and the overallperformance

  • Word 2004 and high CPU usage

When using Word 2004 its CPU usage frequently spikes to 100%. Simultaneously, the doc refuses to scroll. I can interrupt the bad behavior by clicking anywhere in the doc or by pushing command-S. The behavior only happens with my older docs, never with my newer ones. I suspect FAT32 is somehow involved because a couple of years ago I transferred the old docs to my PowerBook from a G4 desktop via a thumbdrive that was, as it turns out, formatted FAT32. On my Powerbook, each transferred file was initially labeled "Unix executable file." I had to drag each one into Word, make at least one tiny edit, then save it before the Finder would re-label them as Word docs. I've read the old posts on this subject, but none of them mentions the FAT32 thing. So, is that the source of the problem? Is there something simple I can do to correct the old docs? It's probably silly to be asking  this question now since the software is so old. I should just splurge for new everything..., but the problem might migrate with the bad docs, right?

Maybe someone in the Office 2004 for Mac Forums can help you.

  • Firefox is eating up between 90% CPU usage to %230 CPU usage, while on a text-only page. I've tried many of the fixits. They didn't work. What can I do?

    I've cleared cookies multiple times
    I've emptied the cache
I cleared my download history, and a majority of my browsing history
I've tried having hardware acceleration for both flash and firefox on and off
I turned off all my apps and plugins and when that did nothing I turned back on the ones I need. I never had a lot of apps to begin with. only a max of 5. I had quite a few plugins, but i disabled all but quicktime, flash, and silverlight. I have those three set on "ask to activate" so none are "always active" anymore.
I also tried a couple things from the FAQ and forums here about changing a few settings in the "about:config" setup.
A few of the above things initially worked, but after a day or two it'd be back to sucking up my CPU and memory. I would then try the same thing again, and this second time there would be no improvement.
The real memory will fluctuate between 200 MB and 1.7 GB, and has done so for quite a while.
Even after I've left streaming sites, and sites with lots of images, and I'm not downloading anything, the memory and the CPU will still do that. I only have a handful of tabs open at a timeusually, and all of them are mostly text. I'll quit and reopen firefox, which will initially bring the memory and CPU usage down, but it inevitably climbs up quite quickly, regardless of my tab usage. It'll be the same if I'm playing a flash game or scrolling through blogs.
I never had any of these problems with Firefox 23, and my internet usage habits haven't changed at all. I had some of this slowness a few times with version 24, but nowhere near as bad as this, or as constant. Almost everyday I end up googling for other ways to speed things up. Everything I do never slowed down Firefox on earlier versions.
I've tried all my usual tasks on Safari which will never climb above 30-40 MB of memory, even on netflix streaming, or flash games, and the CPU will average around 8 and 11%.

i'm also having major CPU problems w/ FF 29.0.1. when i restart the app it calms down again but after loading tabs it steadily climbs up to 100% after not too long. i have checked out the 2 CPU links/articles above and do all the basic troubleshooting and tips, but with all the FF tools & add-ons isn't there some sort of CPU monitor that has the ability to display which extensions/scripts are hogging the CPU? Activity Monitor on Mac just shows the total used by the app. it's impossible in my case to efficiently disable dozens of add-ons & scripts, restart, and test each one by one b/c it can take several hrs before the CPU starts to spike high again. i have no time for this.
    thanks

  • Simple Java 3D program’s CPU Usage spikes to up to 90 percent!

Hi, everyone. I’m completely new to Java 3D and I’m toying around with basic program structure right now. My code is based off of that in the first chapter on 3D in Killer Game Programming in Java. I removed most of the scene elements, replacing them with a simple grid, Maya style. (Yes, I’m starting off small, but my ambitions are grand – I intend on creating a polygonal modeling and animation toolset. After all, the Maya PLE is dead – damn you, Autodesk! – and I just plain dislike Blender.) I implement a simple OrbitBehavior as a means for the user to navigate the scene. That part was basically copy and paste from Andrew Davison’s code. The mystery, then, is why the program’s framerate drops below 1 FPS and its CPU Usage spikes to up to 90 percent, according to the Task Manager, when I tumble the scene. I’d appreciate anyone taking the time to look at the code and trying to identify the problem area. (I’ve undoubtedly missed something totally newbish. -.-) Thank you!
(Also, I had the worst possible time wrestling with the posting process. Is anyone else having trouble editing their posts before submitting them?)

Huh. A simple call to View.setMinimumFrameCycleTime() fixed the problem. How odd that there effectively is no default maximum framerate. Of course simple programs like these, rendered as many times as possible every second, are going to consume all possible CPU usage...

  • MDNSResponder eating up 1/5th of my CPU usage

I've just returned to my campus network after being away for a year, but I don't remember seeing a process called mDNSResponder eating up 15-25% of my CPU usage before, nor do I recall my computer seemingly constantly receiving 100-200kB of data before which -- I'm only guessing here -- is related to that process.
Some googling has told me that this process is related to Bonjour, and I'm guessing that the high traffic is related to a boatload of people on campus sharing their iTunes playlists. My questions:
    1. Am I on the right track here? I want to say that this became a problem only in the last couple of weeks, and guess when the students moved back?
    2. Is there some switch I can turn off to stop this incoming traffic? I don't even have iTunes running, and mDNSResponder is still sucking away 1/5th to 1/4 of my CPU usage. I don't share any playlists myself, and don't listen to anyone else's shared playlists either.
    3. Can I disable this process entirely without adverse results? I don't print to Bonjour printers nor iChat over Bonjour, but may print over IP or Windows Printing in the future.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • JDev 10.0.1.3 CPU Usage Spikes - Somewhat Serious!

I have noticed that JdevW.exe process in task menager has annoying CPU usage spikes every 2-3 seconds. This does NOT happen if I use 10.0.1.2 version.
I have fairly powerful Dell workstation. Any ideas? Configuration problem?
BTW embedded OC4J is not running.

    Shay,
I am actually not doing anything. As soon as I open JDev I can see (and feel) that performance problem. Every time the 'spike' occurs, mouse gets 'frozen' for a fraction of a second. It is anoying a bit.
My coworker's installation do not have that problem and I wonder if add-ons that I have downloaded and installed would create this behavior. BTW, how do I figure out what add-ons (plugins) I got?
I can see 'jucheck.exe' and 'jusched.exe' processes as well but even when I killed them the spikes occur.
    Any thought?
