Preview: Edit or Add to PDF's Table of Contents

Hey everyone,
I have a PDF that was generated by an online service (in other words, I didn't create it) and I'd like to edit or add to the Table of Contents, which currently is blank (other than the filename). (The file is otherwise able to be annotated, and has existing active links in it pointing to URLs.)
How can I do add to the TOC? For instance, if there are 12 chapters in here, I want to create 12 lines in the TOC, so I can just click and jump to them. I see there is a workaround with Bookmarks but I'd prefer manipulating the TOC.
And if the only way is to start with a Word doc, let me know because I can start in that format.
Thanks,
J
P.S. Working with Preview 5.0.2. (504) and Snow Leopard 10.6.4.

You can use PDFOutliner for editing the TOC (costs $5 on the Mac App Store). PDFOutliner can also *automatically* build a TOC based on the PDF's heading styles, to get you started quickly with a long PDF.
Note - I am the developer of PDFOutliner.

  • Pdf with table of contents from a Pages file

I discovered in a pdf file sent to me that it has a table of contents in the sidebar where thumbnails, and annotations also reside.
When I create a pdf from my pages document this is not available.
In the table of contents sidebar are the words 'No Sections'. How do I create sections for every para styled as a heading so that they show in the table of contents sidebar of the pdf file.
I have been using outline to navigate in the pages file but the pdf would be simpler for me to do under meeting conditions.

Your son was probably referring to *Adobe Acrobat Pro*. But I can't see how that would help with the sidebar automatically.
In *Acrobat Pro* it would be a matter of selecting each head to make a bookmark from that and then resave the .pdf file with the bookmarks sidebar showing upon opening.
You can also add and edit bookmarks in Preview.
    +Preview > Menu > Bookmarks > Add Bookmark/Edit Bookmarks…+
I did a further experiment with a Pages document with bookmarks to see if that created the sidebar with bookmarks, but it didn't work.
There are differences in the ways Preview and Acrobat Reader display .pdfs even with what seem to be straight forward settings. I can never depend on a uniform display.
Particularly where PC users are involved.

btw When you viewed your Pages document with your TOC did you set the Preview sidebar to show "Table of Contents" in the little icons at the foot of the Preview sidebar.

  • Add section titles to "table of contents".

I am attempting to build a book from a Genealogical Generational listing that indicates the generation number at the beginning of each section. I also add that number along with the section page number at the bottom of each section. i.e. Generation 1  page  n.
Is there any way to automatically pickup the section title to add into the "Table of Contents"?
Using my present method, highlight the section title, click "Paragraph Style" (edit to my preference); will show only page 1 for all section beginning pages and seems unprofessional. alternatively, I could just leave out the page number somehow and attempt to "Tab" the first page of each section. Basically, what I would like is:
    "Generation 1
Generation 2" etc.... or something similar without page numbers and the section name is the page link to the first page of that section.

    Hi Sparkgapper,
Is this a Pages question? YOu are in the Numbers for Mac forum.
From your profile, is this an iWork '09 question?

  • How do I add headers to the Table of Contents?

    Hi there,
I have a book that mainly consists of text boxes rather than inline text. The main title (on each page) is what I want to show up in the table of contents so the reader can just tap the title and jump to the page. How I tried to do this was make the titles "Header 1" and then go to table of contents and add that to the list but it doesn't seem to be working. I am thinking it's because TOC might only work with inline text. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Caleb

Sorry, I'll try to describe this layout as best I can and if I still need to change it to make it work then I guess that's life.
    Page Layout
    Preface
    Mission Statement
    About the Author
    Acknowledgements
    Using the Manuals
Chapter 1 - Muscles of the Lower Leg
    Soleus Medial
    Soleus Lateral
    Plantaris
    etc.
    Chapter 2 - Muscle Quizzing
    Soleus Medial
    Soleus Lateral
    Plantaris
    etc.
So when your in the table of contents, you can swipe between preface, muscles of the lower leg, and quizzing pretty easily. In preface (underneath the preface title in the table of contents) it shows a list saying Mission statement, about the author, etc.) I want that same list to appear for the pages under Muscle Quizzing.

  • Add pages before the table of content into the table of content

    Hey,
I was wondering if someone can help me. I'm writing my dissertation and I have to include an abstract and acknowledgments before the table of content ( written on pages 1 and 2). How can I get pages to include these pages within the table of contents written on page 3?
    Thanks
    Ordidge

You can't get it in the TOC automatically. You can do it manually but you'll loose the updating feature of the TOC so do it when you are certain you are finished with the document.
What you do is copy the whole TOC and paste it in Textedit. Here you can do all the changes you want. Copy it again and paste it back in the Pages document.

  • Table of Contents : does it work with RTF render ?

    Hello,
I have a problem with the table of contents when I render in RTF :
The link in the table of contents point all to the first page and the page number is always "0".
But with the same RTF template, when I render in PDF, the table of contents is good and all the links point to the good page.
Do you know how to resolve the problem ?
Can you suggest a manner of bypassing the problem ?
I absolutely need the RTF render, because I need to edit manually then (move parts, etc.).
my table of contents in the RTF render renders like this :
1     Informations sur le rapport     0
    1.1     Rédaction du document     0
    1.2     Diffusion du document     0
    2     Contexte de l'intervention     0
    2.1     Application 0
    2.1.1     Description     0
    2.1.2     Architecture     0
Thank you in advance for your help.

  • Table of content in .book is not linked correctly, it is linked to it self.

    Hi!
I desperately need some advice on an urgent matter. I made a perfekt little .book-file with a table of content at the front of the book.
Then I realized that when i turned it in to a .pdf the table of content ( it is also shown i the left-window when I look at it in acrobat ) is duplicated. The left window show my table of content and it links to the text-rows in the table of content, and then below that it shows the rows of the table of content again, but this time it links to the actuall correct pages.
How can I get rid of this duplication, and just get the correct indexing linking to the pages, but at the same time keeping my table of content in the front of the book?
    Kind regards
    Veronika D

When converting a FrameMaker book to PDF, the PDF may include bookmarks for additional paragraph tags (on top of those specified in the book's PDF setup)
The workaround is to specify PDF Setup in the individual file. For example, open your TOC, select Format > Document > PDF Setup, and make sure that the Heading1TOC, Heading2TOC... paragraph tags are not included in the bookmark setup.

  • How to update alt layout tables of contents

I'm having trouble with alternate layouts and tables of contents.
After creating a 6 page document, I created an alternate layout. The content from the primary document was linked to the new layout.
Some modifications were made to the alternate layout, which involved positioning some paragraph styles onto a different page.
When the alternate layout was exported as an interactive PDF, the table of contents indicated it was hyperlinked because the mouse cursor would change to a hand when hovering over the respective table of contents entry, however when clicked, the PDF simply remained on the same page.
As one potential solution, I created an additional table of contents and made certain to use the heading styles that were relevant to the alternate layout.
When I would generate a new table of contents for the alternate layout, only the table of contents title appeared and no additional paragraph styles were included in the table of contents.
Is there a special way that I need to get the table of contents to work properly using an alternate layout.
I am a Lynda.com subscriber, so please feel free to refer me to a video that may answer my questions.
I have been looking through the Adobe help, and if the answer to my question is there, I'm overlooking it because I'm overwhelmed with information (and possibly the stress of the print deadline which is later today).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Buck

I am doing my final project. It uses the publish-subscribe mechanism. Publishers publish the messages and subscribers can get the messages by subscribing the topic they am interested in. When the subscriber get the messages , I built a java swing application to simulate a public screen to display these messages. That means this swing application is not interactive to the user. The swing window is just for displaying the information.( Imagine in the airport hall, you can look at the flight informaiton on the public screen).
What I want to achieve is that the swing window can automatically repeatedly display the messages. If the amount of messages is too much to display only one page, how it can be implemented to alternatively display multi-pages in one window? Scrollpanel is not useful for this aim. I think maybe I can use java.swing.timer. But this is the first time I try to use it. Some ideas?
I hope this is clear now.

  • Editable Table of Contents for PDF in Preview

I am creating my own PDF document and I want it to have the convienent Table of Contents feature in Preview. But how can I edit my PDF document so it will have such a feature?

I want to create said table. I am creating the PDF document, I want to be able to create the Table of Contents myself. Any idea how?

  • How to create the Table of Contents in Preview for a pdf file?

Does anyone know how to use the Preview to create a new table of contents or add a new link to the existing table of contents?
    Thanks

Preview cannot do this - it is not a PDF editing utility. If you have the original document in an editable format (eg a Pages, or Word document) then you can edit it, print it, and from the print dialogue, save as a PDF. Otherwise you'll need the full Adobe product or similar to acheive what you want.

  • What can I do to edit and add or delete PDF document

I do not use many functions of acrobat PDF except converting word document into PDF or vice versa. Recently, I have a document in PDF format with pages of writing. What do I if I want to edit the document in PDF format, and to add or to delete certain pages to the PDF document? Currently, I do not have additional acrobat PDF software but the free downloaded Acrobat 8.0. I also have Mac OS 10.5.6. Can the new Mac OS do more without additional acrobat software?
Thank you very much for your advice.

  • Is Acrobat Pro right for us. We have an Employee Handbook that needs editing. Some is current pdf, some from an older version. Want to get all into one handbook, have the table of contents automatically adjust and link to specific pages from the ToC.

You can download the trial version (http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-downloads.html) to convert the PDF back to WORD if you do not have the original. The conversion may not be perfect, but it is typically better than starting from scratch. You may be lucky and get a good result. You might check the settings (in the save screen) to try retain format versus retain text flow. The format version can be a pain to edit since it creates a bunch of text boxes. The flow version may require you to reformat in WORD, but you likely would want to do that anyway.

  • In Preview, when I add text annotations to my PDF (lecture note slides), they look fine until I close it and reopen it, and then they are rotated 90 degrees. How do I fix this and keep it from happening again?

I have the same problem with lectures slides.
Furthermore, sometimes the text box, when doube-clicking, turns  the text into a one-liner. Causing the text box to sometimes get 3. times wider than the pdf itself.

By pressing [cmd + I] the Inspector opens up and clicking on the rightmost tab 'Annotations' you should be able find those Annotations again. I do this regularly to find the empty annotations I accidentally create while clicking through slides.
