Preview - Extra paragraph
When copying text from a pdf in Preview (Adobe Reader does not do it), and pasting the text in a word processor I get an extra paragraph.
Does anybody know, how could I get rid of that?
I notice that too... Do you know if there's any fix (or work around) for that?

Extra Paragraph in Table of Contents
I have a TOC set up in a three-column text frame, and have it set to balance columns. When I generate the TOC, it gives me an extra paragraph return at the end, which messes up the column balance. ny way of fixing this?

Grep for removing extra paragraph returns?
Hey all you smart people out there. Can I use GREP to remove extra paragraph returns? I'm working on basically a directory, pages and pages of names, addresses, and phone numbers imported from a Word doc. Each line has a style applied,with the first line of each listing being a different style than the others, and a hard paragraph return at the end of each line. There is an extra paragraph return in between each listing. Once I get the styles applied, will GREP allow me to search for the first style in each listing and remove the extra paragraph return in front of it?
Here's a screen shot. The listings at the top are already formatted, the bottom ones haven't been formatted yet. Basically, I import and apply the style that's most used, and then go in and change the gray bars, and the name/phone. So, I do have to go through the whole thing, but it would still be less clicks overall if I could format everything and then have GREP do the rest.
Thanks!Thanks, John, I'll try that. There are a few more (larger) sections coming that will need cleaning up.
I've been doing this project annually for a few years now, need to get better organized with InDe's automation features, which I know will make my life much easier.
Sometimes I do some of the cleanup in Word, simple find/changes for double spaces and the like. Their styles are never my styles so I always strip out the Word styles when I place the text, rather than try to match them up on import. Often, the listings come in with a return instead of a tab, grrr. So, the name listing, when it's formatted in InDe, is the person's name/space/right-tab with leader dots/space/phone number (a lot like the White Pages). But in the Word doc, each item is a separate line, and sometimes I have to put everything in the right order so that when I get it into InDe at least all I have to do is delete a paragraph return and then apply a style to the line.
I only do one of these a year, so it's not worth it to invest in expensive scripts or extensions. That said, I do need to take better advantage of the built-in features. I'll have to look on Lynda.com for tutorials--I'm sure there are some there. -
Extra paragraph markers in copied text
Many of our WebHelp topics contain code that users can copy
and paste into a text editor. However, we've noticed with the move
from Winhelp to WebHelp that extra paragraph markers are being
added between lines of code when the code is copied. This is not a
big deal when users are copying a couple lines of code, but it is a
huge problem when users are copying large amounts of code.
Is there any way to eliminate these extra paragraph markers
when text is copied?Try a multi line text field.
Insert | Form Element | Multi Line Text Field.
You can also tweak that so that when the user clicks in the
text field, the text is automatically copied to the clipboard. I
don't have the code to hand but post back if you want that.
This way the text is completely unformatted and ready to go.
You don't have to display all the text if you don't want to. Using
the tweak or Ctrl + A, all the text in the field is copied even
though it is not displayed. Can make things neater. -

Unwanted paragraph tag after text inset
9.0p255 on XP ... Just searched the forum for a reminder, as it's not every day I need to work with insets. A couple of posts towards the top of a long thread gave the tip of leaving a special space between the anchor for the inset and the end-of-paragraph marker; "ah, that sounds familiar!" I thought, and tried it. Well, it may sound familiar ... but it doesn't work. Yes, I've already tried a special paragraph style with space above and below set to -2; no luck there either. All the more annoying since I'm fairly sure I did manage to do it in another file-set/on another PC last year. Thanks in advance for any tips!

I am stuck in Frame 7.0p577 on Mac (having not yet invested in emulators etc.), so what I say here may not apply to Frame 9 on Windows – but it probably does. I am very familiar with the iceberg of an issue whose tip you have encountered. As I see it, here's what's up:
When Frame imports a text inset, it takes the end-of-flow and turns it into an end-of-paragraph (displayed with ¶ at its end, assuming you have Display Text Symbols turned on in View Options). Provided that the inset is followed by another paragraph, then all is well. However, the creation of this extra paragraph is insidious in cases where the inset lies at the end of a flow.
First, if the inset ends a document, an extra line results; that extra line is troublesome if it pushes over a page boundary. The workaround is to increase the height of the page frame, to make room for the line without spilling onto a new page, but that's messy because the manual height adjustment needs to be adjusted again if subsequent editing changes the placement of the extra line.
Second, it seems that the extra paragraph takes the paragraph tag – and therefore, the paragraph formatting – of the FIRST paragraph in the inset. If the first paragraph of the inset's source flow has an autonumber, then the stray paragraph after the inset will appear with ANOTHER autonumber of that style.
Third, if an inset is placed in a table cell, the extra line causes the height of that cell to increase. In the common case that the cell then exceeds the height of other cells in the row, the height of the entire row will increase, leaving undesired space. Workarounds such as manually limiting row height are a pain.
Fourth, if the inset is placed in a footnote, the extra line causes the footnote height of that cell to increase, leaving unwanted space between footnotes of at the bottom of the page.
Over the years I have adopted the following technique: At the front of flows liable to be used as inset sources, I have an empty paragraph tagged BOF. I set the BOF format in both the source document and the host document to Run-In. Any autonumbering in the first functional paragraph of the source will then be prevented from being carried into the referring document. You might think that a comparable paragraph at the end of the inset source – EOF, maybe – would defeat the insidious behaviour that I describe, but too much of this and things start to fail.
I have one or two additional ideas in case anyone who made it this far wishes to contact me directly. In fact I'd be delighted for anyone who understands any of the above to contact me!
I would be delighted if someone at Adobe would follow-up on this, but honestly don’t expect too much.

Grep script that looks for paragraph style A followed by paragraph style B
Hello,
I am fairly new to scripting in Indesign and I have run across something I want to script that I don't know how to do. Two of the paragraph styles that are in our files are Normal and Song. I need to add an extra paragraph return between all instances of Normal followed by a Song. I tried to search the forums to see if this was already on here somewhere and if it is I didn't come across it. I would like to set it up as a grep script but if anyone has an alternative way to do this I would like to know also.
Thanks in advanceHi,
So you could use a script.
I assume a text frame with proper story is selected and whole story is in one frame or linked frames.
myStory = app.selection[0].parentStory;
if (myStory.constructor.name !== "Story")
alert ("Select a destination text frame, pls\rand try again");
exit();
myNormal = app.activeDocument.paragraphStyles.item("Normal");
mySong = app.activeDocument.paragraphStyles.item("Song");
app.findTextPreferences = null;
app.findTextPreferences.appliedParagraphStyle = mySong;
mFound = myStory.findText();
len = mFound.length - 1;
if (len >= 0)
while (len--)
currPara = mFound[len].paragraphs[0];
if (myStory.paragraphs.previousItem(currPara).appliedParagraphStyle == myNormal)
currPara.insertionPoints[0].contents = "\r";

While editing and adding to a document pages has duplicated the opening paragraphs further down in the document. When I try to delete the extra paragraph it also deletes the original paragraph. How do I fix this?
Welcome to the Apple forums
Did you happen to put those opening paragraphs in the header? Show Layout (⌘ ⇧ L) from the View menu will help you determine if that is the problem. -
Paragraph Style to control paragraph breaks?
Hi All,
How do you add paragraph breaks using Paragraph Styles? I'm sure the answer is pretty obvious, but I don't have the vocabulary that comes with a layout/print background so I'm probably looking at the setting but not knowing it.
What I'd like to do is create a paragraph style that inserts an extra paragraph break (return) at the end of a paragraph so that instead of something like this:
Voluptat vitis dolorro to molupta tempos autet etum alis res int re voloriorest maio. Ulpa as debit prae vellaut ommoloratur susdamus endandit, qui sandesci corerspiet quis essequid evenis periorp oriberspidit illab in cum hit poratem porpore periam ipic to totaess imintiam quia alicid ullabo.
Erspernate nostiis dolorem re in poria ipsum volum none nus.
....the paragraphs look like this:
Voluptat vitis dolorro to molupta tempos autet etum alis res int re voloriorest maio. Ulpa as debit prae vellaut ommoloratur susdamus endandit, qui sandesci corerspiet quis essequid evenis periorp oriberspidit illab in cum hit poratem porpore periam ipic to totaess imintiam quia alicid ullabo.
Erspernate nostiis dolorem re in poria ipsum volum none nus.
Thanks!What you want is to have the space before and/or the space after set to add that space.
The amounts I use depend on the baseline grid (if used) so that the amounts of space before/after add up to the baseline grid amount.

Added screen shot -
Hi there,
I am not sure if my question can be answered here, but here's what's happening:
I have a blog on my page that's hosted by Zenfolio, and they don't support this, yet its their interface doing this and not me. Whenever I insert a new image, and click next to it and then "enter" to make a new paragraph below for text or another image it is adding unwanted paragraphs! In the photo below there should be one paragraph and not 8.
I used to have this happen to me in Dreamweaver rarely, but I was able to go in HTML view and simply delete the extra paragraphs without altering the rest of the layout. If I go in HTML view in that interface it will not just delete those paragraphs, but would mangle up everything....see the other screen shot: It is moving the text around the image which is not what I want.
This interface I am typing now is very similar with the one from Zenfolio, here too I inserted these photos, and had to click next to them + enter to go down to the next paragraph, and when I looked at the HTML there was only one paragraph spacing between the images as it should be; so the question is why is it doing this and how do I stop it!? I rather not use tables. (Which was their suggestion, and which has also a spacing problem; I set the height of the cell to 22 for example and when previewing the post its at least 60).Hi,
I don't have that option...this is what I have there: They don't allow many options apparently on the posts; I can't change the margin either, and its set to like 45 or something...really far from the side of the page. I can customize the CSS for the rest of the page, but not the blog part. I have an issue with the text size too because it makes it 1.36% larger by default, and whenever I change that it won't remember it as I continue on the same line. I set the size at 12, and after I put a period, and continue on the same line it blows the text again at 16.
I emailed them about it...that interface also doesn't correct spellings; it underlines them but not offers the correction, it offers me to paste from word...which is very annoying.
Thank you, -
Photoshop CC brushes extremely laggy with Wacom Intuos Pro!
I've been messing around with digital painting on an iPad for a while, and just bought a Wacom Intuos Pro (medium) so I could do so on my Macs. I immediately noticed input lag from the Intuos, so started to do some testing. It doesn't appear to be the tablet. The same lag exists in Photoshop when using the Mac's trackpad, but the problem disappears entirely when I move into Corel Painter, trackpad or Intuos. Some lag exists in Illustrator, but not nearly as bad as Photoshop - Photoshop CC really seems to be the culprit.
I've uploaded a video (from my iPad; sorry for the quality) of this behavior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwR76V-hmLU
Any thoughts? Calling Adobe first resulted in finger-pointing to Wacom (quickly squelched when I pointed out the same problem existed when using the trackpad), and then sending me a link to a 5-year-old Adobe Forum post that's for Photoshop CS4 and Wacom Intuos 4 tablets - that's 3 versions back for Photoshop and 2 versions back for the tablet. (Of course, the solutions present in that post no longer apply.) Here's the link, for anyone interested: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3709366
Any thoughts? Painter seems nice, but I'd really like to be able to do digital painting in Photoshop as well. This issue makes that quite a bit more difficult.I have an intuos 5 touch not the pro. However have user my son's intuos5 pro on my machine for his first pro had a bad touch ring and he wanted me to test his tablet.
I do not have a problem with normal brushes like you show in Photoshop. I can produce long delays using large wet mixed brushes though. However ever small mixer brushes work more like the brush stroke you show using painter painter on my windows workstation in Photoshop CC 14.2.1 current version and prior versions.
I using wacom driver 6.3.7.5 I see there is a version 6.3.7.6 I'll download a try that now.

Photoshop CC 2014 Crashes When Opening or Saving PNG Files
I'm having an issue where opening or saving PNG files causes my copy of Photoshop CC 2014 to crash.
I've updated to the latest version, restarted my computer and have no plugins installed. I have also re-installed the program from the Creative Cloud application, although I haven't tried a full uninstall/reinstall sequence.
I'm running an x64 version of Windows and have tried both the 64 and 32 bit versions of Photoshop - neither works.
Other file formats don't appear to cause any issue - the problem is specific to PNG files (does Adobe Photoshop depend on any PNG library like LibPNG? Perhaps an older version has been installed by a different application?)
This issue seems to have occured in the past on the Adobe forums, but there is no clear resolution.Part of the information is missing but your running CC 14.1.2 not CC 2014, and14.1.2 needs to be updated to 14.2.1. I also can not see the date of you video drivers. Here is what my CC 2014 and my 14.2.1 looks like

Problems with RH 9, CBT, and Printed Documentation
When I upgrade an x5 project in the new RH9, all appears to go fine until I try to generate the Printed Documentation. I was disappointed that the printed documentation STILL requires so much cleanup. Text tagged with the Online condition sometimes displays on some topics, even when Online is excluded from the output. Also, some of the cleanup issues surrounding headings and index entries are still necessary.
The four biggest issues are:
1) If a "book" TOC heading also has content (a topic associated with it), a double-heading appears in the printed output. You have to manually remove all these extra headings in the cleanup process.
2) All index entries appear in the paragraph BEFORE the actual heading they mark, instead of after the heading, resulting in the Index not being correct (if a heading appears at the top of the page, the Index points to the previous page where the index entry resides, instead of the correct page). I have to manually go through the entire document and move each index entry to the paragraph AFTER the heading it marks.
3) Robohelp ignores the exclusion of Online conditions on some random topics. There is a workaround to "trick" Robohelp, but it takes *a lot* of time to do. To "trick" Robohelp, I had to generate a printed manual and make a list of all topics that "slipped" through. And, then edit each topic where the online condition was ignored, by adding an extra, empty paragraph to the end of each topic that had:
· a single paragraph of text (aside from header and footer info)
· ends with bulleted list (and no extra paragraph marker following)
· ends with a table (and no extra paragraph marker following)
· ends with a figure (and no extra paragraph marker following)
· ends with see also\How do I\misc button text (and no extra paragraph marker before the seealso/how do I listings)
4) I noticed that when I opened a topic for the first time in Robohelp, the Online condition sometimes gets applied to incorrectly tagged text (it wasn't tagged this way in the x5 content). This requires me opening each topic in the upgraded project, and checking each topic to make sure the online condition is applied correctly in each one (a very tedious process, especiallly if you have a doc set of over 1 mil words!).
Expected results:
Printed doc does not contain double headings. Index entries appear after headings. Conditional text behaves as it is supposed to behave (and if you tell Robohelp to exclude the ONLINE condition, it does it for ALL topics).
Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for this? Yes, I have the latest build. We held off on upgrading to previous releases of Robohelp because of the Printed Manual problem too (it seems like each version created more clean up work). :-( I logged a bug on the Adobe forum.Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks!Mr. Grainge,
Thank you so much for your thoughtful answers back! I appreciate you taking time out to write such a thorough reply. I hope Adobe appreciates you! You're number one in follow ups!
Unfortunately, your answers did not solve my problems. But, you did give me some ideas on where the problems could be occurring. So, thank you!! Before I begin: In answer to your question, yes I *am* using the supplied Style Mapping template (I never had luck with the custom one myself). Also, I am going to hold off on replying to 1) and 2), but I'd like to share my answer on 3) and 4), which is really just what I need to get Printed Documentation working in Robohelp 9 the same way it worked in x5.
A little history: I have a set of about 50 help projects that span many versions of our company's product, and multiple versions of Robohelp (some even go back to the 90s!). They even include some help projects that were originally in Frame/WebWorks but were later ported to Robohelp. There's a lot of history to them.
Investigating the Problem: When I opened an x5 project in RH 9, I noticed that some of the timestamps on the .htm files didn't match the rest of the files. It turned out, that these very same files that were the ones giving me problems with the Conditional text! That's when your thoughts about the mapping came to mind...As I said, my project spanned mutiple versions of Robohelp. I wondered if some of the coding on the .htm page was being parsed incorrectly on upgrade, and if if that was the reason why RH couldn't update the pages (which explain the unchanged timestamps). In other words, I wondered if Robohelp was mapping the styles correctly on import. So, I compared these unupgraded .htm files with ones that did upgrade, to see if there was something on the code page that could be causing the problem.
Solution to Fix 3) and 4) above:
I'm going to list out everything that I did below, however, not everything on this list applies to everyone. But, hopefully it will help you, if you ever run into this scenario yourself, and it might give you some ideas on how to get your HTML files working. So, before upgrading, here is what I did:
I opened my old CSS in a text editor and removed all the Robohelp autogenerated comments.
In Homesite, I did a bunch of Search and Replaces on a copy of the older x5 project. I looked for code that may have been generated in an earlier version of RH,and for unusual structures in the meta and style declaration area that could be causing conflicts. Here is a list of my search and replaces below:

After I did these all these search and replaces in the copy of the x5 version of the project, I opened the project again in RH 9 and upgraded it. After the upgrade, I checked the timestamps on the .htm files to make sure they all changed. They did! It worked! Everything upgraded properly this time... I tested the Printed Manual output and no conditional text slipped through this time. Yay!
In Summary:
This is what I learned if you are having problems with Conditional text and Printed Manuals in an upgraded RH project:
Always make backups of your older projects before you upgrade anything. I know this is elementary, but I thought it was worth reminding.
Check the timestamps of the files after you upgrade the project. If there are a group of files with timestamps that aren't similar to the rest of the files, chances are Robohelp was having trouble converting those files.
Try looking at the HTML code in those files and see if anything looks out of the ordinary. Some examples are above.
If you have already ported the RH project and it's too late to go back, go look at the file timestamps anyhow. For all the older files, try opening each one in Robohelp and add a space or something (to force RH to change it), and save it. I didn't have the time to verify this, but it seemed on most instances: when I forced RH to save the file manually, it updated correctly and the problem with the conditional text went away. (This option takes longer, especially if you have to do each page individually, but it's worth a try, IMHO.)
Aside from the initial Printed Manual woes, which are resolved, the upgrade process from RH 9 really was seamless! Best I have ever seen! Everything just works! Awesome is a word that comes to mind.
Printed Documentation output does work on upgrade, but in my opinion is: it is no better than it was before, in previous versions.
I wish there were more fixes to the Printed Manual output. When you have a product help system that spans multiple versions, contains over 2.5 million words, and 10,000+ topics, having a lot of cleanup on the production end is costly. What use to take a person on my team less than a day to generate 50+ PDFs in FrameMaker, takes 4-5 weeks man-time in RH. I will outline my opinions in my next reply to this thread.
Thanks again, Mr. Grainge! -
How many different ways of dynamically displaying a text?
Hi folks,
I've been assigned to work on the following:
The SapScript form on which I am supposed to work, currently has hard coded text with some variables such as name of the customer, order number, special info, etc, coming from the driver program.
I must change the form such that depending on the company code there would be a different logo, different header, different footer, different body of text, some with extra paragraphs added, removed, etc... The general layout of the form remains the same throughout.
So in other words, this SapScript form must be dynamic enough to be able to accommodate all these demand.
The customer would ultimately like to update a table or tables and the text in the SapScript form is changed accordingly and without any programming effort.
Different copies of the same form is not an option because company codes come and go and change rather frequently.
So, how would you go about it?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
Edited by: Goharjou ardavan on Jun 17, 2008 8:11 PMHi,
It's a very good practice to have only one SAP script. However ideally you do not have to touch the pgm if say a new company is added.
This can be achieved as below:
DATA: w_VAR1(30),
w_i(1).
CALL FUNCTION 'OPEN_FORM'
EXPORTING
device = 'PRINTER'
form = 'ZKIL'.
w_i = '1'.
Concatenate 'AMEND_HEADING' w_i into w_var1.
CALL FUNCTION 'WRITE_FORM'
EXPORTING
element = w_VAR1
window = 'MAIN'.
CALL FUNCTION 'CLOSE_FORM'
EXPORTING
device = 'PRINTER'
form = 'ZKIL'.
In the above pgm there are 2 text elements defined in SAP script ZKIL viz. AMEND_HEADING1 & AMEND_HEADING2. In the driver pgm get the company code & put in w_i which should be defined as CHAR 4. so that all your text element name should be derived by Concatenating 'Text element name' & w_i & then use that variable in FM WRITE_FORM so that even if tomorrow a new company is added only a corresponding text elements need to be added in SAP SCRIPT & no changes are required in the pgm.
I hope this helps,
Regards

Problem with importing page breaks
When I import text from WORD, Indesign adds an extra space after my manual page breaks. See pic.
How do I change this setting?
Thanks!Peter, yes, I placed the cursor right in front of the first letter in the line when I inserted the page break.
Here's an answer I just got from a MS Office forum. I am led to assume that I will now have to fix this "empty paragraph" problem manually before I import any MS Word 2010 doc into InDesign...
RE: Word 2010 adds a paragraph mark after my manual page breaks. Why?
In previous versions of Word, you could have unintended results: if you changed the line immediately after the page break to a heading, the line before the page break would be formatted as a heading too because it belonged to the same paragraph. Automatically inserting a paragraph break prevents that, so for most users this will be an improvement. You can delete the extra paragraph breaks after inserting the page break.
