Preview fails to show embedded images
Hi,
Preview.app fails to display certain embedded images, such as throughout the article <http://www.claymath.org/library/seniorscholars/zaslowphysmatics.pdf>. Adobe Reader shows them with aplomb. For what it's worth, Manfred Shubert's PDF plug-in (within Safari) also fails to show the embedded images.
This failure consistently occurs on all Macs at the Physics Department at Howard University, using the latest Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Preview v.3.0.8, accross a large variety of hardware (PowerMacs, PowerBooks, iMacs and iBooks).
Is this a bug, or a prorietary PDF feature of Adobe's? Can anyone reproduce it?
Thanks, Tristan
G4 PowerBook Mac OS X (10.4.8)
Hi, Tristan.
I can reproduce the problem with Mac OS X 10.4.8 and Preview Version 3.0.8 (409), i.e. the latest version of Preview.
The images display correctly in Adobe Acrobat 7.0.8 (latest).
Checking its the Document Properties in Acrobat, the document is PDF Version 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x), so it should work in Preview. However, it also notes that the PDF was produced by AFPL Ghostscript 8.0, so something in the document's PDF formatting with Ghostscript may not be copacetic with Preview.
I notice when I open the file in Preview, I see a number of the following messages appear in console.log:
invalid image /ColorSpace value.
invalid image /ColorSpace value.
invalid image /ColorSpace value.
There may be a specific color space or Colorsync profile embedded in the images or the PDF that is causing the problem in Preview.
Good luck!
Dr. Smoke

Mail not showing embedded images
This problem has been bugging me for a while.
I am getting some emails (from my company communications) that are incorrectly formatted by Mail. I see big boxes labeled "Missing Plug-in". The rest of the text is there, but those big boxes make the mail hard to read.
So today I decided to look a bit deeper into the problem. I brought it down to the presence of image tags that call for embedded images (included as attachments) using the "cid:" protocol. For example:
<img src="cid:[email protected]" alt="Find" border="0">
Is this a restriction in mail (I am running mail 6.1 on Mountain Lion). Or is there some config parameter I need to tweek to enable support for embedded images ?
Thunderbird has no problem. I also did a quick check with Google Mail and Yahoo Mail, and neither show the images. But they just show nothing, so the resulting email is still readable. Mac OSX Mail shows big boxes with the "Missing Plug-in" note. I would be happy if Mail just ignored the images.
I should point out that mail on iPhone and iPad work fine (they display the images).
AlbertTry this - worked for me...
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20652845#20652845
If that doesn't link properly, here's the original solution, cut and pasted:
"MailPluginFix"
From the Code2K:Labs site: http://code2k.net/products/mailpluginfix/
From MacUpdate: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/37804/mailpluginfix
Just download the fix and double-click it - next time you open mail, you'll see your attachments. -
Crystal HTML viewer will not show embedded image from Infoview image store
I am having an issue with the html and dhtml viewers not showing an image I have embedded inside a crystal report. The image has been stored in infoview and embedded into the report from that source. Using the Crystal ActiveX viewer works fine in this case and shows the image. The html viewers however show the blank box with the red X in the top left corner when Internet explorer can't find an image.
Now, if I right click on the image and get it's properties I get this URL:
http://vsx2af0x/crystalreportviewers115/imagehandlerdotnetbridge.aspx?dynamicimage={B8FDE586-08D3-4A14-896C-0FE19AC3DB90}.png
If I take that url and try to load it directly through Internet explorer I get the following error:
Exception of type 'System.OutOfMemoryException' was thrown.
The file is small and only about 20k in size. If someone can help that would be greatly appreciated.
ThanksUnfortunately I have been unable to remove the plug-in. The files is not locked, or shared, but my operating systems thinks it is.
What happens, when you try?
When I try to delete the plug-in from
/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/Google/Analog Efex Pro/
with ⌘⌫, I simply get the pop-up panel to enter my administrator password, and the plug-in will be moved to the Trash:
Don't forget to quit Aperture, before trying to remove the plug-in and to log off and on. -
MIME emails not showing embedded images
Hello.
When I receive e-mails from a GroupWare solution (extra.groupcare.dk), embedded images are not shown in Mail 3.4. If I use Gmail or any version of Microsoft Outlook, even Mail 2.1 on Tiger it works fine.
The images are shown as mime-attachment-x, and can be viewed with quick look.
Here is an example of the original message.

Hope you can help!I tried to convert your base64 code and it seemed valid.
The situation you describe is normal to me, though, because I have unticked "Show external images in HTML-messages" in Mail's preferences to save bandwidth when I'm on a mobile connection or similar. Whenever i get one of thoses HTML-mails, e.g. from iTunes Store with a lot of missing images, there will be a blue field at the top of the mail window stating that "This messages contents unloaded images" (or whatever the English translation would be). Additionally, there's a "Download images"-button to get the the missing images.
I don't want to be unpolite, but could that be the case for you too? -
IE Windows randomly fails to show swapped images preloaded
if you look at this page in IE6 Windows (did not test in
IE5):
http://ever-together.com/site/product_detail.php
and use the little numbers or next-previous arrows to swap
the main image, randomly (it seems), the
image will just not show up.
Since it seems random, you might have to try several times
before an image does not show.
Even an image that has showed before, sometimes does not show
if you just click on its corresponding
number again.
The images are preloaded using <body
onLoad="MM_PreLoadImages()">
The javascript code to swap the images is different on the
numbers, which use MM_setTextOfLayer and
on the previous-next arrows, which use a custom script, but
both randomly fail to display the images
in IE6, so I assume it is an IE bug?
Anybody encountered this problem before?

Preview does not show any images
Hello. I am running 10.6.5 and Preview does not work. Any image I try it on does not show up on Preview. Is there an existing solution to this problem?
You can trouble shoot by creating a new user account and see if the problem is still present.
You can Safe Boot to turn off third-party extensions and see if this is the cause.
It could be if you install the 10.6.5 Combo Update it may straighten out, particularly if you installed the delta through the Software Updater. No harm here to re-install this combo. -
Office 2007 won't show embedded images
For some reason Outlook 2007 has stopped showing images. When you click the bar to download pictures it trys to load them but displays the red x to tell you they can't be loaded. I have read quite a few forums to try and find a solution and I have tried a few things:
- recreated the outlook profile
- emptied the temp folder
- changed the location of the temp folder (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security\Securetemp)
- turned off antivirus (although there are no privacy components in the antivirus in use)
- reset security zones in IE
- changed trust settings
Would anyone have any other suggestions of things I can try or a way of perhaps diagnosing the problem?
Thanks in advance
toonerVinod,
That worked for me. I have tried so many items that it is great to finally figure out what the problem was.
Thank you so much!
Gene
With the relevant email message open click on the Office button in the top left>click on Editor Options on the bottom right>click on Advanced on the menu on the left>then under 'Display e-mail content' uncheck 'Show picture placeholders'.

Here's what i see
http://tel3deals.com/pics/contributeproblem.jpg
When i give it a name and open it it shows the page with the
images.
any idea why this is happening ?
Thanks.THis is a real stab in the dark, but at the top of the "next column" there is a small grey arrowhead next to the word "preview" which, if clicked, will rotate to two different positions. One position shows a preview, the other rotated position does not show the preview.
Try clicking on the arrow. -
Browser should show ALL images, in all formats.
I recently opened an image for editing from Lightroom to Photoshop, corrected some perspective distortion, and saved the result as a PNG. Lightroom then failed to show the new image, even after I synchronized the folder. A respondent in the Lightroom forum said that Lightroom doesn't support PNG, to which I ask, WTF?
Lightroom should support any format supported by Photoshop. It displays JPEGs, which aren't a raw format. Exactly how many products should we have to run concurrently to simply manage images? Lightroom is supposed to be the product that does it, but if it fails to show all images in each directory, it fails at its purpose.MikeLeone wrote: So you think LR should support BMP? PCX? How many cameras store their
photos in these formats? PS supports them, but why should LR?
I'll agree with support for PNG, at least as far as exporting, as some
web sites like using this format rather than JPEG (although the
reasons for using PNG aren't technical, but legal, AFAIK - licensing
for using the JPG format - rather than something technical, like
smaller file size, etc).
Very true, though I am more arguing that LR should be able to leverage formats available to other Adobe products installed on the same machine more than anything.
BMP and PCX, no most cameras don't use those formats *anymore*. But I remember having an old camera that took photos in BMP format (it may have been a webcam, but still a camera) which I have in my library from a long time ago. In my day job we still actually use applications that suprisingly enough can only display PCX images; though I never would intentionally keep anything in PCX.
I think anything it is able to import it should be able to export; but again if you have it natively supported in the Adobe product or universally supported by the OS without additional codec installation it should be supported, even if it is something obscure as PCX.
MikeLeone wrote:
That should be a feature request for the camera manufacturers, then,
shouldn't it? Ask them to share their non-published, proprietary
drivers with Adobe? Or at the very least, publish an API so LR (and
presumably, other programs) can call the code (presuming that the code
is modular enough to be called by other programs, of course).
Yeah, I understand that neither Canon nor Nikon are supporting DNG files straight out of the camera yet and both still maintain a propreitary formated RAW file, but I would suspect that generally a Canon .CR2 file doesn't change all that much if at all other than the camera identifier from a 20D to a 5D Mk II to the 7D for example.
Why do current Lightroom users need to wait until Adobe releases 2.6 or 3.0 to be able to use Lightroom with their 7D?
Why if Adobe releases a Camera RAW update for PS that includes the 7D does it still not work in LR?
Yes the mfg. need to be more open or pick a standard and run with it, but it just seems excessive for Adobe not to play nice too.
It is in Canon/Nikon/Adobe's best interest to play nice and share this information with Adobe. So I am betting they are not withholding it. I was getting Canon SDK notifications for the longest time and sometimes months before a Camera was available, and sometimes it was even annouced this information was made available to developers on new camera models. I am sure Nikon does the same thing and Adobe is getting this information from all mfg.

Mac Mail has problems to display HTML embedded images
Well Im new here , but have a real problem.
I create HTML pages with embedded images and send them off as MIME/multipart etc. mail through active server pages.
So far so good. All PC users see the mails with 2 embedded images at correct positions using windows e-mail .
However all Mac users receiving this mail have a problem, then MAC mail show embedded images just as a box , the 2 images become attachements of the email.
If a PC user forwards such a received HTML e-mail to a MAC user , the MAC Mail sees the 2 images are correctly displayed.
Thanks for hints and comments .Hello BDAqua
Thanks for the dump hint - I could use it.
Well I have not been able to track down the exact cause of the problem, but at the end I have succeeded to see the pictures even on the Mac. Initially , because I tested the HTML code against Safari/Foxpro/IE9 with success and the PC's received it as a mail perfect with the pictures , I ruled out the code.
After sending it with various different parameters for 7-bit coding , multipart/alternative; multipart/mixed, with and without alternative ascii-text body, etc. and having no change of the problem (in one instance Mac stuck the pictures at the end of the mail instead of having it as attachement - but never displayed inside the page) I thought about the HTMLcode again (the mail small but was consisting of a cluster of multi nested tables, where in the pictures where placed). I started from scratch with one simple table and one picture - and saw it also on the Mac, so repeated reconstruction every table layer and picture with testing each step again - and at the end - it worked all. So my conclusion is that the mentioned browsers and windows mail are made more HTML fault tolerant for little code mistakes than mac mail. It seems that when forwarding the page from windows-mail to Mac mail , windows even corrects and thats why then it was seen ok on the Mac.
I think that a number of people had similiar experiences. I contacted one advertising company (all Mac freaks and only Mac's there, they do a lot of Internet/Intranet design and develeopments for large companies) and asked them wether they know of any hints or problems - they simply said forget it it's not possible - which is not true - but seeing the HTML correct in all browsers doesn't mean it might ok for the mac mail.
Well any way I now know where I am and know where to look if suddenly a picture is not shown anymore...
Thanks for the help and all the best.
Rgds

How do I get CC to open these files correctly? Is the client saving them incorrectly?
My work around has now become a pain & I need to know why Illustrator CC tells me most/all embedded images are missing in files received by clients.
Illustrator 5.1 opens the files ok & gives me no errors. It does a few funky things because ti says the file was produced with a new version. The file previews fine in the Finder window & shows all images. The issue with opening them in 5.1 is it wants to open 1 page at a time like the AI file is a PDF.
Why is CC failing to recognize the embedded images? Are the images not embedded correctly by the client? Is 5.1 pulling from some lower res version of the images? Files export from 5.1 as hires. Stumped.
Oh my gosh why arent they just using InDesign. : (Please get informed about how Illustrator saves files and what exactly is in a file and how it is re-opened.
See: http://rwillustrator.blogspot.de/2006/11/whats-in-file.html
When in Illustrator CS5, Illustrator actually opens the PDF part of the file that contains all the images. Always.
When in Illustrator CC, Illustrator accesses the AI part of the file, which doesn't necessarily contain the images. -
I am trying to create an html file for access by a client computer through the LabVIEW Web Server. I want to enable the client to control the vi, so am chosing "Embedded" for the Viewing Option in the Web Publishing Tool. The small preview screen in the Web Publishing Tool shows an image of my front panel, but the resulting html file does not include this image. The Web Server error log shows a 404 error which I believe is due to the lack of an image (or any front panel objects) present in the html file: Error: 404 "Not Found" for "/.lv_frontpanelprotocol.rpvi100", file "c:/program files/national instruments/labview 2010/www/.lv_frontpanelprotocol.rpvi100": Can't access URL
If you are aware of this problem or know any solutions, please post a reply.
Thanks,
DavidDoes it work if you preview the web page locally?
Does the client computer have at least the minimum 2010 run time engine installed?
(quote: Additionally, the Run-Time Engine allows your browser to display VIs that are embedded in Web pages.")

Is it possible for Firefox to show a preview pane in the file/image upload window?
I'm not sure if this forum is the correct place to start this conversation. Let me know if there is a more appropriate location. Anyway, some applications such as Gimp show an image preview in a pane on the right side of the file->open window. It would be nice to have this feature on the Firefox upload window. Currently, when uploading an image with Firefox, there are only small thumbnails to help identify files. This makes it rather difficult to sift through large directories of image files. In Ubuntu, which uses gtkfilechooser, I think it is the responsibility of the initiating program to invoke the preview feature. Some key words of note(that I do not understand) are gtk_file_chooser_set_preview_widget, gtk_file_chooser_get_preview_widget, gtk_file_chooser_set_preview_widget_active, gtk_file_chooser_get_preview_widget_active.
I am new to Firefox/Linux and don't have the skills to make this improvement. Any help with this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thank You.Which distro are you using? I'm using Ubuntu. Ubuntu uses gtkfilechooser for picking files. I think kubuntu uses a different file chooser. I'm not sure how many types of file choosers exist.

Preview app shows png image as transparent window
When I open a PNG file in Preview.app, it doesn't show the image. it just shows a transparent window the size of the image. I can preview the image in the Finder fine. Note the transparent window in the screenshot:
Is there a cache or preference file I should delete?
Thanks,
-ScottHere is another thread on similar issue
Preview - Outline only appears?
There are at least two different solutions within it - one involves a separate (free) program called Etrecheck, the other possible solution does not.
Did you recently update? And what system are you having this issue with? On the MBP or Mac Mini?
