Preview file version can't be deleted

I have a MacBook with Lion 10.7.2 build 11C74 and I used Preview v 5.5.1 (719.11) to edit a pdf of a form downloaded from the internet.
The file was moved to my Desktop, opened and edited.
I saved a version of the file and another file appeared on my desktop. I deleted the original file but cannot delete the other.
It's in this image, bottom right, but NOT in the finder:
How do I delete this file?

Definitely not a virus, or any other kind of malware.
An xlsx file is an Excel file. What happens when you try to open or delete it?

If you use iTunes' default settings then when you add a file to iTunes it places a copy of the file in the iTunes media folder and it leaves the original in place. The exception is when you drag it to the Automatically Add To iTunes folder.
It does not convert the file. You can delete the original if you wish.

Credit card clearing is active- Trip version can not be deleted

Hi Gurus,
      while deleting a trip which is not transfered to FI, we are getting the error message as " Credit card clearing is active- Trip version can not be deleted" Message number 56558.
    1) what could be the reason for this error message.?
    2)How to find whether credit clearing is active or not?
    3) If it is active what is the process to delete the trip?
             Could you Please explain ........

Are you absolutely sure credit card clearing is not active?
Basically you need to check tcode PE03 > TRVPA > decision tree > select your molga eg "10" for US and then highlight "CCC" if it has values, 1, 2 or 3 then it is being checked. You need to make sure that it is set to "0" ..is TRVPA itself active?
2) you can look at the trip itself in PR05 and see if there is a credit card trip assigned, in the backend there is a little icon for "credit card receipts" which takes the receipts from the buffer
You can delete incorrectly assigned credit card receipts from trips at any time , just basically delete the receipt and it writes it back to the buffer

What is a .HDMP file and can it be deleted?

I have this file
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\WERcdf4.dir00\Adobe Premiere Pro.exe.hdmp
and it is almost 1GB in size. Plus I have other .HDMP files totaling another 2GB. Can I safely delete this files? Is this simply a Microsoft reporting file? Or, does PPro need them for something?

Huge System.log and asl files. Can these be deleted? What may be the casue?

Following on from an earlier posting regarding disappearing disk space, a couple of responses suggested running a disk utility such as OmniDiskSweeper.
I ran this and it highlighted that the private folder, specifically 'private/var/log' is taking up almost 49 GB! There are 2 system log files:
system.log.0 is almost 20 GB and system.log is close to 19 GB and a file, asl is 10 GB
What are these, can they be deleted, and what may have caused them to be so large in the first place?

This was being written repeatedly to the system.log file. I removed the application, restarted the Mac and the problem appears to be resolved

Invisible files which can't be deleted

There is a single folder in my trash, and nothing else. When I try to empty the trash, there is a series of popups saying "the operation cannot be completed because the file 2010.psf is locked", etc, for 60 or so different files. These files are from some calendar function of Photo Impression. The funny thing is, if I open the folder which is in the trash to unlock the files, they aren't there, or at least they are invisible. If I open the Info dialog for the folder it shows 5.9M of contents, and it shows read and write permissions for owner, group and others, and it says it's unlocked, but I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any suggestions? It's very annoying. Thanks.

Oh! I just had the VERY same problem last night with a rogue AppleWorks folder..
Do you have the ability to boot to OS9?
If so, put the offending folder into your hard drive (at the 'root' level, not in a folder anywhere - makes it easier to find in OS9), reboot to 9, then holmes it out and throw it in the trash.
To delete locked files in OS9 simply hold down the option key when you choose 'Empty Trash'.

Deleting Premiere Pro Preview Files

I have a huge file containing the preview files. Can I delete these? When is it safe to delete them. I am using Premiere Pro CS4 on a PC with Windows 7. Thanks in advance for any help

Yes you can delete them. If you render the timeline Pro will remake the files.

In working with PRE7 I found that almost all of my disc space was contained in my media cache folder and it was clogging up all my work. What is that file and can it be deleted without causing harm or losing work?

Tom,
This can depend a bit. If you have done any Rendering, those Render files can be safely eliminated. As mentioned above, the .CFA's and PEK files can also be eliminated (will be regenerated, if needed).
For housekeeping, I place all Scratch Disk files in the Project's folder hierarchy. This keeps everything together and below the Project's root folder. When I am done, I will just Delete everything in that Project. In my case, ALL Imported Assets are ONLY copies. I never work with originals, which are safely stored elsewhere. Basically, one click takes care of the cleanup.
If I am not sure that I am done forever with the Project, I will first use the Archiver (Project Manager in PrPro), and locate the "archived" Project on an external HDD for storage. I will archive ALL aspects, except for the Render files, including the .CFA's and .PEK's, just to save time, should I need to revisit that Project.
There are other files, that are possibly in the Project's root folder, such as when you Burn to Folder. You will then have the VIDEO_TS folder, with the necessary DVD-Video files. Once you have successfully burned that folder to DVD-Video, the VIDEO_TS (and all files), can safely be Deleted.

PS - UNTIL I am 100% certain, that I am done, I do not Move, Rename or Delete anything. When done, I often use the above mentioned Archiver, and then do major clean up.

I love my 400 MHz TiBook but its 10 GB hard drive is filling up. I have approx. 1.5 GB of free space left. What files that can be safely deleted? Can I delete extraneous printer files, modem files, packages, etc? I use MacJanitor to clean out caches and I don't have any music or photo files that might be causing the bloat. Hi, Fred. You're wise to be thinking about how little free space you have left now, before the operation of your Powerbook is seriously impaired. But rather than just nibble away at the contents of your drive, which will only buy you a small amount of time before you're back where you started, you should be thinking about replacing your tiny 10GB hard drive with a larger one. You could easily get a 60GB drive for $50 plus the cost of shipping, and installing a drive in a Tibook is very simple — a 20-minute job at the outside. Then you'd just start up from the external FireWire drive on which you've cloned your 10GB drive, and use SuperDuper to clone its contents onto the new drive. The whole drive swap and data transfer, including the original cloning, could probably be accomplished in less than two hours. Then you wouldn't have to worry about hard drive space for a long time to come.

Preview files in iphoto

Hello,
I'm trying to free up space on my HD. I'm using an application called Space Gremlin and it's showing huge numbers of "preview files" in iPhoto. We have an extensive collection of pictures in the iPhoto library...are these previews needed or can they be deleted?

Sorry to hear of your problems.
Right now I would concentrate on getting the pics back, and figure out the iPhoto part later.
Select one of the pics in the Finder and try change the file suffix: if it's pic.jpg, then try pic.JPG or .jpeg and see if that helps.
Try open the pics with Graphic Converter, which seems to be less fussy about things. You can download it here: http://www.lemkesoft.com/
BackUp (if this is the Apple App we're talking about) creates a pkg file. Can you see the one you restored from? Right click on it, and choose 'Show Package Files. Inside you'll find a .dmg file. This contains the actual files. Mount the dmg and see if you can find the files inside it. Can you view them in Preview?

I get that the preview file got corrupted somehow. Is there some way to fix this problem without building a new catalog?

Use Windows Explorer to open the folder containing your catalog. You will see a folder with the extension .lrdata. You need to delete that folder and then start Lightroom again. Lightroom will generate a new previews folder.

What kind of files are in there? Sounds like a carry over from your last system. DiskUtility should only be kept in Utilities with a shortcut in the dock or an alias on the desktop, idealy.

Can I free up some disk space by deleting preview files?

I'm new working with CS4, my hard disk ran out of space therefore I'm unable to transcode my project in Encore, and I'm also unable to burn a DVD in premiere because of no enough hard disk space. I read somewhere that I can delete preview files with deleting files in the actual project. is it truth? Any suggestions?

Yes, so long as you do not Render again. Do not delete your .CFA and .PEK files, as they will just be regenerated, when you load the Project.
However, you are likely to not gain that much additional space. The best solution would be to add more HDD's. I'd try doing an Archive of any older Projects, and cleaning off (obviously Moving to an external) any unused media files.
On my laptop, I also have had great experience editing to/from FW-800 externals. If you have, or can add, eSATA, that would be even better. Still, I'd pick up a handful of 1TB internals first.

Is there an app out there to find the files within Imovie app on my Ipad where the Imovie "preview" is playing from?
I deleted the original vidoe clips from my Camera Roll before exporting the Imovie to Youtube because my camera roll was out of memory.
I'm using the latest Imovie app for Ipad.
