Preview folder content

I use Bridge CS5 for more intenssive organizing/RAW photo management fairly often. Like most people I assume I have the content tab open as well as the preview tab. When I click on an image it shows up in the preview nicely. I'm wondering why when clicking on a folder contained with images, doesn't show you any of those files in the preview tab? I feel it could be very useful and a big timesave instead of having to enter the folder, scroll through the images, then go back. Are there any plugins or anything that could help? Thanks!

The preview tab only shows content highlighted in the content window.
Clicking on the folder shows nothing as you observed. A folder can contain from 0 to thousands of images, but the preview will display a max of 10 images so this probably would not achieve what you want.
I have a method that takes a little time, but I can tell what the content of the folder is without opening it.
Lets say I have a folder called "Models" and 20 sub-folders with the various models named. Say I open "Heather" and select sample images that represent her outfits. Then I use image processor to make a small thumbnails (32k), move this to the main folder page, highligh these thumbs "Heather" sub-folder, right click and choose "create stack". You will have the model's sub-folder with a number in upper left corner showing home many in stack.
Now when I view the folder with all the models listed I click "expand all stacks" and I see what is in all the sub-folders. Or click on the number in upper left corner of folder stack to see those images. If you have more than 9 images in the stack a "slideshow" option will appear when the cursor is hovered over the image stack numbers.
Like I say it is a little more work, but you have control over what is shown, and one can "see" inside the folder.
There may be other programs that do this, but not aware of them.
Could probably make a script to do this semi-automatically, but have never looked at the scripting language.

There is a workaround that is kind of labor intensive. Involves using putting images on the folder page then putting them in a stack with folder.

Previews folder in the iPhoto Library

Hi all, Anyone know what the previews folder is for in the iPhoto library (Show package contents) - and also if it's safe to delete? It's 8gb and would give me some breathing space on my SSD.

This is really, really simple: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
No you can't delete it. It's used by the app when sharing with other apps. Deleting it will corrupt your Library.
If space is an issue you can run a library from an external disk.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

I want to know the difference between iphoto master folder and previews folder

I want to know the difference between iphoto library master folder and previews folder.. my pictures is stored in master but part of them is also copied into previews.. it occupied too much space.. if I can't change anything in iphoto library, any way to save the space for iphoto? 70G for almost 15,000 pictures, is it reasonable?

70GB for 15,000 photos is reasonable, yes, if the photo files are large.
DO NOT meddle with the contents of your iPhoto Library in any other way than using the commands available in the iPhoto application. What appear to be duplicate files stored in different parts of the library are NOT duplicates, and if you attempt to save space by deleting things in the Finder, you will wreck your library and land in a world of trouble.

Setting up to View Folder Contents in Browser

I have placed 40 jpg images in a folder on my web site. How
can I let visitors view the file names (folder contents) &
select an image by name.
I hate to have to make a page & enter all 40 image file
names with links to the files. Is there a better way to do this?

You could enable directory browsing in the directory, but
then you'll
need to accept the rather ugly server default index page. If
it were me,
I'd write a short script that read the directory and
displayed a more
attractive listing. How you would go about that would depend
on what
server scripting language(s) you have available on the
server.

Thanks Barney, I tried that but all that comes up in Spotlight are the log files that show the file paths! I don't know how Steam works. Are all the files held by Steam on their server perhaps?

How do I access the iCloud Preview folder from my iPhone?

Just a simple how to question. PDF files are what I want to be able to view, since my Mac insists on defaulting to the iCloud Preview folder, I assume there must be a corresponding way to read them on iDevices...

Yea, a number of people have wondered why there isn't a general iCloud Drive app that would allow you to see all the documents and launch a compatible app on your device to view them. C: drive is full - move only iTunes Media folder contents to another drive without consolidating?

My iTunes library contains a combination of music/movies/etc that I've purchased or downloaded from the iTunes Store as well as music I've purchased from Amazon and my own ripped CDs (not ripped via iTunes...other software). The Amazon and ripped files have always lived on my D drive (for easier sharing betwen family members, without opening up permissions on our User folders), while the Store files all live under my User profile on C.
I'd like to move the iTunes Media folder contents off of C and onto D. All the instructions that use "consolidating" and "keeping the media folder organized" will not work for me, since I do not want all my files under the iTunes Media folder...I like them where they are now in D:\Music\Amazon and D:\Music\CDCollection.
Do I have to resort to moving the files myself, adding them into the library again, then cleaning up the orphaned library entries that are pointing to the old location?

Copy the entire iTunes folder from your music folder to D:\iTunes.
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library.
Click Choose and navigate to the file D:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl
Check the library is working properly.
Use the option File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files to import any stay files to the new library folder.
Delete the old iTunes folder on the C: drive.
Ideally you will also backup this library to another drive.

Lightroom is creating a "previews" folder for me and is destroying my files

LLightroom is running extremely slow because it's generating a "previews" folder in my library! I literally have to boot Lightroom once it happens! horrible workflow and I'm getting nothing accomplished! HELP NOW!!!!!! This is ridiculous!

Lightroom will build previews when you are looking at the files in library when they are needed if you do not build them when you first import. If you want just the embeded previews and not have previews built at import then set the following in the import dialog. This will slow you down later on when you are scanning the library as previews are needed and they are not prebuilt. Get used to the preview files as they are unavoidable.

I kept forgetting and procrastinating about following your instructions, since I have internet access only for limited amounts of time and usually I am busy with important tasks when I am.
Out of the blue, the problem corrected itself (the Save As box started to open full screen, then shrunk down to a normal size and the edges can now be dragged to a custom size).
Even the copy and paste problem in the filenaming area seems to have been less troublesome lately even though there have been no updates to Firefox in a few weeks.
Even though I marked the solution as not helpful, the problem has in fact been resolved. I will save the solution instructions in case the issue returns.

This is why building them on demand is an alternative to building them up front, and why you have options for auto or manually purging them. That said, it may not always be possible to delete 1:1 previews - more later.
Standard-sized previews are based on the pixel size option you chose in Catalog Settings. You have 4 choices: 1024, 1440, 1680 and 2048. If all you want is standard-sized then choose a size equal to or greater than your screen size. Lr also builds smaller versions at the same time. These are used for the thumbnail, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4 zoom levels. Adobe call this the "preview pyramid".
1:1 previews will not be deleted unless your chosen standard-sized preview is less than half the size of the full-sized preview. For example, you have images with pixel dimensions of 3072 by 2048 pixels (6MP camera such as Canon 10D) and have selected 1680 pixels for standard-sized previews. Since a 1680 pixel preview is more than half the size of the original the full-sized preview will be kept, even after using the purge 1:1 preview command. Had you chosen 1440 pixel for standard-sized previews then the full-sized would have been purged (i.e. 3072/2=1536, which is greater than 1440). Now take the example of a larger camera, say a 8MP camera such as the Canon 1DMKII with an image size of 3504 by 2336 pixels. With the standard-sized set at 1680 pixels the full-size will again be purged (i.e. 3504/2=1752 pixels, which is greater than 1680 pixels).
Another thing worth mentioning - Lightroom will usually delay purging previews for deleted images until after the application has been closed and reopened, even then it might take a few minutes to clear the purged previews. The idea here is to ensure the previews don't get deleted whilst there's still a chance that they may be needed (e.g. you removed images by mistake then use Undo command to reinstate them).
Hopefully above explains why Lightroom doesn't behave as you expect. If it makes your head spin, think how much mine spun when writing it.

You do not indicate what your preview setting was while you accumulated a 12Gb preview folder. Nor do you indicate how many images are in your catalog.
Given your screen size of 1280 (laptp?) I would set the preview size to 1440 since this is still far less than half of your D3 images.
Cropping - I'll safely guess - has no effect on your preview size choices.
I confess that preview sizing and purging is confusing. I avoid the confusion by shouting "more disk, mama".

Imac slow to display folder content

Hi,
My Mid 2010 Imac 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 with 4GB 1333 MHz RAM is currently having problems displaying folder content. As I am a photographer I am often opening folders of images and needing to view them and recently when I click on a folder or sub-folder the images can take upto a few minutes to display (making it look like the folder is empty). It only seems to happen intermittently.
I have already checked hard disk space and have 371 gb free space. I was also advised to look at the green coloured free memory segment in the pie chart on the Activity Monitor which was very small. Since closing lots of programs which were sat on my dashboard and also deleting some items off of my Desktop this has now improved and is running around the 475 MB mark. Despite this, the displaying of folder content has NOT improved in the slightest.
Can anyone help?

Surprising that the RAM hasn't improved things. Once you've resolved the current issue I'm sure you will notice a boost in performance 12gb is ample RAM for most uses.
Before re-installing it is vital to have a backup of all your data so that you can restore in the unlikely event of a problem. Re-installing the OS will not delete you data, but backup - at any time - is essential. An up-to-date Time Machine backup or a bootable clone of your HD using an application such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! will do the job. Many on here keep both forms of backup.
If you do decide to re-install the OS you can do it from the Recovery HD. Restart holding down Command + R and from the screen with 4 choices select Re-install OS - you'll need an active internet connection and you might need to input your AppleID credentials to perform the install. It's a 4gb download so it might take some time, depending on your connection speed.

I am geting the same message when updating to IOS-5. "Please re-insert you SIM, or visit your carrier store to receive a replacement SIM card." Unfortunately we are stuck as well and I have not found anyone yet to give a solution??? Will end up going to Apple tomorrow :-(

Can someone clear this up a bit?
My LR 2.1 preview folder is at 12gb, and I want to get that under control. After reading all of the threads here about previews it seems one of the best choices is just delete the folder and then let LR 2.1 rebuild it. But before I do that I want to set my preview options correctly. The info below (found in another thread) is good, but confusing at the same time.
1) "You have 4 choices: 1024, 1440, 1680 and 2048. If all you want is standard-sized then choose a size equal to or slightly less than your screen size" Is this based on the long edge of your screen size? long edge meaning 1280.
2) "Now take the example of a larger camera, say a 8MP camera such as the Canon 1DMKII with an image size of 3504 by 2336 pixels. With the standard-sized set at 1680 pixels the full-size will again be purged (i.e. 3504/2=1752 pixels, which is greater than 1680 pixels)". This formula looks to be saying the long edge, correct?
Am I understanding this correctly? This looks to be saying;
A) standard previews uses your screen size.
B) 1:1 previews uses images pixel sizes?
C) you only have one setting to control previews for standard and 1:1? (that being the "You have 4 choices: 1024, 1440, 1680 and 2048")
This is interesting because in my case my screen size in 1280, but most all my Nikon D3 images are 42xx. So if I want to keep my previews folder clean and growth controlled, I should basically set my previews option to the lowest 1024? And one more interesting tid bit, how does a cropped image play into the 4 choices? Say I crop a 42xx image to oh say 2024, then my 1:1 for that image will never be purged? I'm probably missing something here, and it wouldnt be the first time.

Printing Finder (Folder) Contents

I often have need to print the contents of a folder as it appears in the finder (i.e. print the finder window or some list of filenames in the folder). There is no "Print" command in the file menu when a window is open. I have been taking snapshots of various views, but sometimes end up with multipl snapshots.
Is anyone aware of another way to do this?
