Preview glitches .TIF

When i open a .tif or .tiff document in preview it shows up fine. As soon as i rotate or try to save it as pdf it glitches, ie: the image turns black.
What is going on????? my old mac had no problems with that

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

Bridge doesn´t show preview of tif-images

Hi,
I uses Bridge CS6 on a Mac with MacOS 10.9.2. Suddenly bridge doesn´t show previews of Tif-images. It´s also impossible to fill in any metadata. The program also says that the image isn´t tagged with any color profile. I don´t have these problems with jpegs, only with Tif-images. I even get previews on the RAW-images. Does anyone know what the problem can be?

I guess I have to try to reinstall the program.......
I'm 99,99 % sure that won't help solving your problem because to possible being effective you also should use the Adobe Clean tool to get rid of a lot of the hidden files that just stay put during a normal reinstall. But if you want to do something easier instead of reinstall, quit Bridge and go to the user library (by default hidden per OSX 7, use Finder, menu Go with option to reveal this library)
In the preferences folder is plist file for Bridge (com.adobe.bridge5.plist), drag this file to the trash. Then in same library go to the folder Caches / Adobe/ Bridge CS5 and inhere delete both plug in and folder called Cache. (this means recaching the previews and thumbs).
Then restart Bridge holding down option key and again choose 'reset prefs'. All previous deleted items will be replaced with new, fresh and empty ones and you have an almost like factory settings Bridge without the need of reinstall.
But I really suspect it comes down to the Tiff files so maybe also a reset of preferences in PS might be worth a try.

Unable to preview jpg tif files in Win 8 Explorer

Before installing Design Std CS6 (not CC) plus Acrobat XI Pro, I was able to preview jpg and tif files in Windows 8 Explorer in any of the views (XLg, Large, Medium icons) and in the Preview Pane. However, now I only see the program icon, regardless of what application (P'shop or Win Photo Viewer) I associate it with. PDFs display fine in Win Preview.
I know I can preview in Bridge, but how do I get back the ability to preview JPGs and TIFs in Win Explorer as well?

Okay, problem has been solved: the Adobe install changed two Windows Explorer Folder Options (View > Options > Folder Options: View tab) - Always show icons, never thumbnails and Display file icon on thumbnails were checked after the install, but not before (I hooked up cloned HD I had made before the install to check). I can now see thumbnails (instead of program icons) in Win Explorer in the various views (Large icons, Medium icons, etc), as well as in Preview Pane. Hallelujah!!
Can't imagine why anyone would want program icons instead of thumbnails - or why in $&!^% Adobe would cause that change to be made on the install, but everything's back to normal and I'm a happy camper once again.

Is there a way to save Aperture RAW edits (previews) as .tif files?

In iPhoto Preferences/Advanced, it is possible to choose to save RAW edits as .tif files. The resulting files are then stored in the Previews folder inside the iPhoto Library. In Aperture, edits of RAW files are stored in the Previews folder as .jpg files. I am aware that I can export the edited versions as .tif files outside of the Aperture Library. Is there a way to do it inside the Aperture Library, just the way iPhoto does??

Probably collecting everything on an artboard into a new layer might give you the option to use a script to save layers to files.
But this is a feature request but no as of yet has suggested a way that this might work, at least I do not think so.

Preview glitch when searching for words on page and when using text tools to write comments/notes on .pdf slides, why?

When using Preview to access my class notes as .pdf files, I have encountered extremely frustrating glitches when trying to search for specific words or phrases within the .pdf files and when trying to use 'text tools' to write notes on the .pdf slides. Preview did not behave in this manor with Mountain Lion OS. This seems to correlate with my recent upgrade to Mavericks OS.
When using the search function you should be able to type in any number of letters or words and press enter to continually cycle through the highlighted findings that match what you have typed in. Instead it now, typically, stops tracking what I type in after about 3-4 letters and the yellow highlight turns grey. Once it does this if you try to press enter to cycle through what it has found it no longer cycles. It never did this in Mountain Lion using the very same .pdf files I had previously used in the old OS, and it does this despite there being multiple matches for what I am searching.
When clicking 'show edit tool bar' button and then 'text tools' button to be able to free text notes on the .pdf file I have to exit out of the 'text tools' mode to be able to advance to the next page. This is extremely inconveneint and, again, Preview did not do this in Mountain Lion.
These are my two major complaints about Preview that I have discovered so far in my short time using it with the new Mavericks OS.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

I have this issue too and was pleased to find this thread. Did either of you find the source of the problem or how to fix it?
I've tried using Wondershare PDF Editor as well and wondered that had messed some settings up. Have either of you used that?
If so, how would I revert to a clean version of Preview?

Premiere Pro "3 frame" render preview glitch

When I create a render preview in Premiere Pro, sometimes the render preview renders the same frame for three consecutive frames. In other words, after the render preview is complete, the render preview creates three consecutive frames that are the same, and then moves on to the fourth frame. It looks like a jump cut where there is none. this costs me a lot of time, since to fix it I have to unrender and then rerender my render preview.
How can I avoid this problem?

Hey Ann, I know that deleting the render files and rerendering will work. But this costs me a lot of time.
Is there a way to avoid this glitch in the first place?
It happens quite often. Am I doing something to cause this glitch?

Need help combining docs in Pages or Preview--glitches

I'm trying to combine about 20 short docs into one, so it will print as one document. I've tried the following, and run into these problems:
1) Copying thumbnails in Pages. This works most of the time--however, every now and then, it will only copy one page of a multiple-page document. It doesn't seem to matter what/where I click, only the first page of the doc will copy over. This seems to happen every fourth document or so.
2) In Preview: tried combining PDFs by dragging and dropping from the sidebar. However, that created something that, while looking like a 38 page single document, still considered each document as separate. When I went to print, it would only print the document that was in the window.
3) In Preview: tried doing the drag-and-drop by dragging directly on to the page in the sidebar, instead of below or above (as recommended for Snow Leopard in a MacWorld article). Didn't work. The green plus sign appeared, but after I dragged and dropped, the new pages would disappear.
It would be incredibly helpful if I could solve this problem. I've combined a number of how-to sheets into a packet, and not being able to combine them into a single document means a very long night of collating!

BTW, I'm on an iMac, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), Preview 5.0.3 and Pages 4.1.

When copying the Thumbnails in Pages '09 to paste into the Thumbnails of a 2nd document, they both must have the same page dimensions and orientation.
When selecting make sure you have all the sections selected (surrounded by a yellow border). Hold down the shift key and select a range or individual selections if need be.
I have tested this and it works. Even between Word Processing and Layout templates.
In Preview I tested the merge and yes there appears to be a bug, even after saving, then printing.
It is not just the two parts treated as separate however, it seems to drop pages at random. Some from the dragged over version and some from the original.
Possibly it is retaining only pages with different numbers, because it did not renumber them. I will test it further later on when I have time.

Preview Glitches

Hi, first time for me on the discussions forum. I did a search for discussions about the PDF application Preview, but found no listing. Please let me know if there is one out there.
Anyway ... I am in the process of shelling out big bucks for Adobe Professional 9. My company does primarily PDF editing.
I wanted to stick with Preview ... but I kept finding that it will not choose text properly in two column PDF pieces. If I want to highlight a phrase in column A, the choose text switches over to column 2. Or ... if I want to choose one or two words in Column A, Preview refuses to do so.
Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, DJ HUK

Preview is not going to serve your purposes if your "company does primarily PDF editing." Preview meets the needs of the consumer user who mostly needs to look at pdfs and perhaps make simple alterations, not the professional/industrial user.
Your best bet for what you want will be the innovator of pdfs, Adobe.

Show icon preview glitch

Hi there...this is puzzling me. Just recently any MS word file icons located on my desktop changed to blank icons.
I then discovered that in order to show the icon previews for MS Word .doc and other files, I need to un-check "show icon preview" in the view options menu.
But this is odd, because it's the reverse of what you'd expect. Normally, you'd check "show icon preview" to see the preview.
Has anyone else experienced this? What might have caused it? (I recently downloaded a .doc containing macros, so I'm concerned this might be a security issue)

But you're not getting a preview when you uncheck that box. You're getting the MS Word document icon, which is the same for all .doc files, no matter what the contents. When you show previews, you're actually getting previews... problem is that a preview of a document that's mostly plain text, shrunk down to icon size, doesn't look like much. But you're getting what you asked for at the moment.

Problems viewing large tif files in preview

i'm having trouble viewing large tif files in preview. the tif files are on a cdrom - when i click on the file to open it, it opens only the first 250 pages of the file. the file has approximately 3,000 pages. how can i get preview to open the rest of the pages?

no trick - i didn't create the cdrom but it only has 3 tif files with approximately 3000 pages each, not 3000 large tif files. plus several smaller pdf files, but those aren't giving me any problems.
i don't know whether they're compressed, but i still can't get more than the first 250 pages to open, even after copying the file to my desktop. if anyone has any other ideas, i'd much appreciate it.

How to preview tif files with eyes turned off?

Hello,
When working with tif files, I usually put all layers in a folder, and turned off the "eye" on the layer panel. So the size of the tif file would reduce to half.
But there's no way to preview the tif file with its eyes turned off in Mac.
Is there a mac plug-in that let you do that?

If Preview ignores embedded thumbnails and displays the full image, then this is really outside Adobe's control....

correctly the thumbnail would be »empty« because everything is hidden in Photoshop so the empty/white preview would be correct.

Can I have a preview image(tiff) in panel?

I want a preview image(tif file) in my photoshop extension panel. However, the Flex control Image only support .bmp, .jpg, .png. Is there any control that can have any format image preview like photoshop LAYERS panel do? Or you have another way to fix it. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!

The Navigator panel has a preview of your .psd with layers. Infact I think it works with all file formats. It can be re-sized to whatever size you want. You may have already known all this. But if not, just open up the navigator panel.. would that work for what you need?

PDF into Aperture or Keynote

i am trying to import pdf images into keynote or aperture. these are single page pdf's that i dragged out of a multi-page pdf in Preview. the original pdf was created in AutoCad.
these are coming up as either washed out or as having black backgrounds (which weren't there) and in both cases they are unusable.
does anyone have any recommendations for fixing this? i think i have tried saving out of Preview as tif, png. bmp etc, etc.
is there an Acrobat Pro equivalent for the mac that I can try and do something in by downloading a demo version?
i think this has to do with rasters versus vectors or with layers or something but i have to get out of the ditch in either case.

It is supposed to have a white background.
The problem is that I am sorting images in Aperture to make a slide presentation in Keynote.
Perhaps I have to bring it directly into Keynote??

Some imovie bugs, and a work-around for one!

CRACKING OF AUDIO IN CROSS DISSOLVES:
This one's been documented a lot - the crackling noise when cross dissolving two clips (anyone been following New Scientist? The podcast on 'crackling' is hilarious). I originally thought it was just a preview glitch, but the movie was actually exported with the sound error as well. It also applies to the titling.

In my movie, I dissolve between shots with virtually the same ambient noise in the background. To fix the problem, I extracted the audio of the clip before the dissolve, copied and pasted it into the timeline after, and clipped it down to a size to cover the cross dissolve. Place it over the transition on the track below, and drop the sound on the transition to zero.
I appreciate this won't work in dissolves between sound fields or scenes and takes some time, but it sorted the problem for me.
OTHER BUGS:
- In the titling pane, the small thumbnail window does not always reflect the time and pause of the final render / 'preview' in full mode. the best example of this seems to be 'scrolling text' - its way out.
- as mentioned, sound dies when titles are added over moving clips. See fix above.
- copy and pasting of extracted audio seems random on the timetime - had to search up and down for where the program dumps it. Should paste at the playhead?
I'm sure some or most of these errors have been documented before. However, I found them all in a single use of imovie, and considering the programs in its 6th version, I consider it a poor performance... the audio problems particularly are unacceptable... does Apple presume that if you don't fork out for Final Cut, you don't need an editor capable of exporting a clean movie? From what I've read, some of these glitches have existed for a while.
If I've documented anytihng new, I hope someone who can relay them further does!

What I do is lock the punch-in in time, move it to an adjacent track, make a split in the track I punched in over and roll that track back to the extent of the punch-in and then move the punch-in back down to the original track.
Like your method it also sounds harder than it actually is :-)
It just goes to show there's more than one way to .....

Viewing tif files in Preview, Dropbox

I've created two image files in Photoshop, removing hidden layers, merging layers, and then flattening the layers, saving them as tif files. One is about 4 MB; the other is about 24 MB.
The 4 MB files shows up fine in QuickView and in Preview; the 24 MB file shows up with a white background and one element from one of the layers.
I've also tried this saving the 24 MB tif file in layers, preserving the alpha; same result.
Uploaded to Dropbox, both tif files show up with only one layer visible, even though the file has flattened all the layers!

Since you can open the TIFFs on a PC, then there must be something wrong with Preview on your Mac. You can use Pacifist to extract the Preview application from your original OS X installation CD/DVD. Replace the one currently on the hard drive.
But there's quite a few other apps that will open a TIFF. Photoshop, Graphic Converter, InDesign, Quark and Illustrator to name a few. There's a bunch of free and shareware viewers you could download here.
