Preview Glitches
Hi, first time for me on the discussions forum. I did a search for discussions about the PDF application Preview, but found no listing. Please let me know if there is one out there.
Anyway ... I am in the process of shelling out big bucks for Adobe Professional 9. My company does primarily PDF editing.
I wanted to stick with Preview ... but I kept finding that it will not choose text properly in two column PDF pieces. If I want to highlight a phrase in column A, the choose text switches over to column 2. Or ... if I want to choose one or two words in Column A, Preview refuses to do so.
Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks, DJ HUK
Preview is not going to serve your purposes if your "company does primarily PDF editing." Preview meets the needs of the consumer user who mostly needs to look at pdfs and perhaps make simple alterations, not the professional/industrial user.
Your best bet for what you want will be the innovator of pdfs, Adobe.

When i open a .tif or .tiff document in preview it shows up fine. As soon as i rotate or try to save it as pdf it glitches, ie: the image turns black.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
When using Preview to access my class notes as .pdf files, I have encountered extremely frustrating glitches when trying to search for specific words or phrases within the .pdf files and when trying to use 'text tools' to write notes on the .pdf slides. Preview did not behave in this manor with Mountain Lion OS. This seems to correlate with my recent upgrade to Mavericks OS.
When using the search function you should be able to type in any number of letters or words and press enter to continually cycle through the highlighted findings that match what you have typed in. Instead it now, typically, stops tracking what I type in after about 3-4 letters and the yellow highlight turns grey. Once it does this if you try to press enter to cycle through what it has found it no longer cycles. It never did this in Mountain Lion using the very same .pdf files I had previously used in the old OS, and it does this despite there being multiple matches for what I am searching.
When clicking 'show edit tool bar' button and then 'text tools' button to be able to free text notes on the .pdf file I have to exit out of the 'text tools' mode to be able to advance to the next page. This is extremely inconveneint and, again, Preview did not do this in Mountain Lion.
These are my two major complaints about Preview that I have discovered so far in my short time using it with the new Mavericks OS.
Any help would be very much appreciated.I have this issue too and was pleased to find this thread. Did either of you find the source of the problem or how to fix it?
I've tried using Wondershare PDF Editor as well and wondered that had messed some settings up. Have either of you used that?
If so, how would I revert to a clean version of Preview?

Premiere Pro "3 frame" render preview glitch
When I create a render preview in Premiere Pro, sometimes the render preview renders the same frame for three consecutive frames. In other words, after the render preview is complete, the render preview creates three consecutive frames that are the same, and then moves on to the fourth frame. It looks like a jump cut where there is none. this costs me a lot of time, since to fix it I have to unrender and then rerender my render preview.
How can I avoid this problem?Hey Ann, I know that deleting the render files and rerendering will work. But this costs me a lot of time.
Is there a way to avoid this glitch in the first place?
It happens quite often. Am I doing something to cause this glitch? -
Need help combining docs in Pages or Preview--glitches
I'm trying to combine about 20 short docs into one, so it will print as one document. I've tried the following, and run into these problems:
1) Copying thumbnails in Pages. This works most of the time--however, every now and then, it will only copy one page of a multiple-page document. It doesn't seem to matter what/where I click, only the first page of the doc will copy over. This seems to happen every fourth document or so.
2) In Preview: tried combining PDFs by dragging and dropping from the sidebar. However, that created something that, while looking like a 38 page single document, still considered each document as separate. When I went to print, it would only print the document that was in the window.
3) In Preview: tried doing the drag-and-drop by dragging directly on to the page in the sidebar, instead of below or above (as recommended for Snow Leopard in a MacWorld article). Didn't work. The green plus sign appeared, but after I dragged and dropped, the new pages would disappear.
It would be incredibly helpful if I could solve this problem. I've combined a number of how-to sheets into a packet, and not being able to combine them into a single document means a very long night of collating!

BTW, I'm on an iMac, Snow Leopard (10.6.8), Preview 5.0.3 and Pages 4.1.When copying the Thumbnails in Pages '09 to paste into the Thumbnails of a 2nd document, they both must have the same page dimensions and orientation.
When selecting make sure you have all the sections selected (surrounded by a yellow border). Hold down the shift key and select a range or individual selections if need be.
I have tested this and it works. Even between Word Processing and Layout templates.
In Preview I tested the merge and yes there appears to be a bug, even after saving, then printing.
It is not just the two parts treated as separate however, it seems to drop pages at random. Some from the dragged over version and some from the original.
Possibly it is retaining only pages with different numbers, because it did not renumber them. I will test it further later on when I have time.

Hi there...this is puzzling me. Just recently any MS word file icons located on my desktop changed to blank icons.
I then discovered that in order to show the icon previews for MS Word .doc and other files, I need to un-check "show icon preview" in the view options menu.
But this is odd, because it's the reverse of what you'd expect. Normally, you'd check "show icon preview" to see the preview.
Has anyone else experienced this? What might have caused it? (I recently downloaded a .doc containing macros, so I'm concerned this might be a security issue)But you're not getting a preview when you uncheck that box. You're getting the MS Word document icon, which is the same for all .doc files, no matter what the contents. When you show previews, you're actually getting previews... problem is that a preview of a document that's mostly plain text, shrunk down to icon size, doesn't look like much. But you're getting what you asked for at the moment.

Some imovie bugs, and a work-around for one!
CRACKING OF AUDIO IN CROSS DISSOLVES:
This one's been documented a lot - the crackling noise when cross dissolving two clips (anyone been following New Scientist? The podcast on 'crackling' is hilarious). I originally thought it was just a preview glitch, but the movie was actually exported with the sound error as well. It also applies to the titling.

In my movie, I dissolve between shots with virtually the same ambient noise in the background. To fix the problem, I extracted the audio of the clip before the dissolve, copied and pasted it into the timeline after, and clipped it down to a size to cover the cross dissolve. Place it over the transition on the track below, and drop the sound on the transition to zero.
I appreciate this won't work in dissolves between sound fields or scenes and takes some time, but it sorted the problem for me.
OTHER BUGS:
- In the titling pane, the small thumbnail window does not always reflect the time and pause of the final render / 'preview' in full mode. the best example of this seems to be 'scrolling text' - its way out.
- as mentioned, sound dies when titles are added over moving clips. See fix above.
- copy and pasting of extracted audio seems random on the timetime - had to search up and down for where the program dumps it. Should paste at the playhead?
I'm sure some or most of these errors have been documented before. However, I found them all in a single use of imovie, and considering the programs in its 6th version, I consider it a poor performance... the audio problems particularly are unacceptable... does Apple presume that if you don't fork out for Final Cut, you don't need an editor capable of exporting a clean movie? From what I've read, some of these glitches have existed for a while.
If I've documented anytihng new, I hope someone who can relay them further does!

PB 12" G4 1.5ghz Mac OS X (10.4.4)What I do is lock the punch-in in time, move it to an adjacent track, make a split in the track I punched in over and roll that track back to the extent of the punch-in and then move the punch-in back down to the original track.
Like your method it also sounds harder than it actually is :-)

I am having a lot of trouble with iMovie 11. I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" for the sole purpose of editing surgical videos for work. iMovie 11 was working great initially for me (taking full length surgical video - up to 2 hours) and editing these down to anywhere from 5 to 30 min videos highlighting crucial steps for the surgeries along with transitions, ken burns, etc (with the plan of overlaying narrative voice-over later). I had about 15 of these videos edited sitting in my Project Library and multiple imported videos (dvd to m4v via handbrake then imported via iMovie 11) in my Project Library. Now none of my projects play in the preview window, it's either black or a weird glitchy picture (like messed up pic of my doc or desktop... really weird) and only about 2 of my imported videos play in the project library, otherwise they are just black when I roll over them. My projects are still intact as far as edited clip lengths and transitions, but nothing plays, even in full screen mode. I tried making a new project and the imported video shows in the event library but when I add it to a project it's black (but does play in full screen mode, but impossible to edit this way). I think the audio is actually intact although i'm not positive because these videos don't have any audio (there's some baseline level that fluctuates on the audio bars).
I tried finalizing and exporting a project as an m4v (one that was a combination of two edited imported videos - one of the source imported vids working in the event library and the other not working) and the first half is all glitched up with no surgery video, but the second half is there with the transitions and everything (the half that is working in the event library). This part does not show up when I am trying to edit the project.
fyi - I had deleted some of the videos from my event library to unclutter a little some time ago, the projects were still working after that.
I can find all of my imported videos (in .mov format) that should be working in the event library when I look in the folder:
users/me/movies/iMovie events
If someone could please help me resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it. I put a lot of work and time into these videos and it would be near impossible to start from scratch (which would probably be on some other movie editor like windows movie maker since my iMovie is not working properly even for new projects). I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch that can be fixed and my projects are still salvagable. I can't remember if this started after I did a system software update or not. This will be a huge dissapointment for me in the Apple platform if I have to scrap my projects because I had just switched over from the PC platform.
I even got Norton antivirus and internet security to make sure I don't have some sort of weird virus.
I have a Feb 2011 15 in MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, 4 g RAM, 750 g HD, 1 g vid card. iMovie ver 9.0.4. Lion 10.7.2Did you by any chance upgrade your Mac OS from version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion) during the time you were working in iMovie on all these projects?
If not, start by deleting the iMovie Preferences file.
Go to the Desktop
Hold down the Option key and choose the Go Menu > Library
Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move the .plist file to the trash and restart iMovie
See if the Project files react any differently. Failing that try doing a Repair Disk Permissions:
Restart the Mac, hold down the Option key continuously until 2 hard drive icons appear
Choose the Recovery Volume as your startup disk and let it run until you see the Desktop
Choose Disk Utility from the Recovery Menu
Run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Reboot the Mac and when you see the Desktop appear launch iMovie
See if the Project files are the same or different. Next step after this is to one at a time take the Project folders out of users/me/movies/imovie projects. Move one to the desktop and start iMovie. Try skimming the projects that acted up recently. Moving one project at a time might help isolate which project may be causing problems. You can also place project folders back in their original location after doing this testing and iMovie will recognize them on the next relaunch. It won't hurt anything. -
Preview.app Glitch throws Display Back to First Page

I've discovered a very annoying glitch in Preview.app; in which when I select all pages after I showed thumbnails, and then mark all pages with [Command]+[A] and unmark a view pages by holding the Command Key and klicking some; the program throws me back to the very first page of the .pdf document. Anyone knows whether there's a fix to be made?

People might think I've spammed with this post.that is what im talking about. after i have tapped the apps icon and gone to the apps pages not the front/main pages, the pages cant be swiped continuously as they were on the s4. you start on page one, then 2 then 3 then 4 and instead of going back to page one it stops and to get back to page one you have to go in the other direction and go to page 3 then 2 then 1. on the s4 you could just keeep going 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4 or 1, 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1,

Hi All,
In a simple title sequence, I cut from a title frame with white letters on black to the same type of frame with a line added. What you see is a main title and then a subtitle pops on under the main title.
This looks perfectly smooth in FCP and the Quicktime conversion. But when I play it in DVD preview there's a jump or glitch at the edit point. Not a smooth pop-up.
I wonder how to fix this. I don't want a "mistake" in the DVD file that's created for burning.

RobertIf you stay within FCS2 / apple's pro apps exclusively (meaning FCP => DVDSP) then yes you can address this issue with many more tools at your disposal and with far better results (especially for audio, titles, and extreme fine tuning).
However this is not the case with apple's i-apps. High Precision modifications become more cumbersome within apple's i-apps because the supplied tools have more limitation and are IMO overly standardized in an attempt to make them more user friendly.

Hi there!
Whenever I ram preview after adjusting a keyframe, the ram preview doesn't fully update the changes. When it plays back, it glitches like it's jumping between old and new frames.
Now I'm working with a guy that uses the animation presets within after effects, this error pops up more in these effects.
Not sure if that is what this error is called, but it is significantly slowing my workflow and making it impossible to work.
I recently subscribed to Creative Cloud and downloaded CS6 on a newly upgraded machine.
The version of After Effects I have installed is: 11.0.1.12 (All current updates are installed)
Here are the specs of my MacPro:
Processor 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory: 16 GB 1066 MHz DDR3
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
OS: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4
I first tried to turn off multi-processing to see if this would fix the problem (Prior to that I have been Purging my ram, but it only sometimes works, then after making a new adjustment the same error would happen again.)
Here are some of the current settings in After Effects:
One red flag I noticed was the GPU information. Am I missing drivers for this video card? Or is it so old CS6 doesn't support this card? Could it be causing the issue?
Here is an example of the animation so you can see exactly what it's causing in the render: (Please excuse the horrible colors.. not the designer, just the animator. )
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have a deadline to reach by tomorrow night. Eh heh...At the begining of the animation, the preset animation called "Card Wipe - 3D Pixelstorm" It repeats after a few frames, I went ahead and rendered it out a couple seconds before so you can see the correct animation (x-axis/y-axis) vs. the Origin layer.
Before I did clean out the disck cache to see if this would also fix the error. It did not. Also a wierd thing, whenever I move a key frame, the green bar on top doesn't dissapear.
I would have to turn off the eye icon (the visual part of the layer) to make the green bar disappear.
Sorry about the previous example, from that perspective I suppose it wouldn't really show the error. Thanks for the advice though.

Hi - I just dowloaded io7 to to my mini ipad and now cannot upload the photos on it to my Mac - which I was able to do with the old system, and still can do with my old first generation Ipad. Very annoying. The device appears in the list in Image Capture and Preview, but no photos appear. Is there a way around this? It is the quickest and best way of transferring photos from a mobile device to the computer - but has iOS 7 messed this up???
Hi I have figured it out on my own just today coz what apple suggested didn't help much so I just have to do it by myself.
This is what you need to do:
open your computer and search for autoplay, it will open rightaway and then scroll down look for your device then change "ask everything" to "import photos and videos in windows" connect your ipad again then tthe import box will open.. and your good!

My Mac Mini (v10.6.8) does not acknowledge my iphone as a device in iPhoto, Image Capture, iSync or Preview although, iTunes does. I am at a loss for importing photos other than emailing them to myself. Same problem with my iphone 4, iphone 4s, ipad2 and New iPad. Is this a problem with OS X 10.6.8 as I read some posts claim? Please help.
I was able to import photos in iPhoto and Image capture when I was running SL 10.6.8 on my older MacBook.
Did you try quitting everything, restart the Mac and then try again?
Are there any updates at all for the Mac? I was helping one user not all that long ago and there were updates for her Mac software that had nothing to do with the OS and when she downloaded the updates - the iPad was then recognized in iTunes. -
What's up with the ITunes store? I have uninstalled and reinstalled Itunes and have tried unsuccesssfully to purchase for download a song. Not only that I can't preview the song first. I can play what I already have but forget about getting new stuff. that's NOT working. I've run every antivirus program thinking it was malware or something conflicting with Itunes store.

Aligning Guides Glitch With "Use Preview Bounds" Checked
I recently noticed in the Preferences that there is a check box option for "Use Preview Bounds" in Illustrator.
When checked, effects such as strokes and all will be clickable and transform sizes will be based on the "preview" bounds of an object.
However convenient, the option poses a problem for people who like to align guides to their artboards or even distribute them.
If you try and align guides to your artboards using the "Align" panel, weird things occur and it does not do so.
If you try and distribute multiple guides using the "Align" panel, the guides don't do anything.
This is something that should be addressed and fixed in future versions of Adobe Illustrator.In case you're going to do an official bug report, you might want to mention that this bug has been there for at least one decade …
