Preview in Finder doesn't work. Doesn't preview movies or audio.

When i used to preview files in finder such as movies or audio they would play in a preview window. now, instead, all that comes up is a picture of the application the file is opened in, i.e. quick time or itunes. help?

Does QuickLook work?
Select the File and tap the space bar?

i have a trouble, with lion my finder doesn't work, i can't open any window

Hi there are various threads here for this issue
this one being the most extensive
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3191263?start=0&tstart=0
First step is re-start the finder
    1. Press command-option-esc simultaneously
    2. Select Finder
    3. Click on re-start
Then according to the above link, several people tried different things.
Try out what you find in above thread

  • Finder doesn`t work!

    Hey,
first of all, sorry for my english...
I`ve got a problem: the finder doesn`t work! after every start and sleepingphase it takes a lot of time to work fluently. i use leopard, did already the pram-reset, watched out in the activity-display, but i could not find anything. Please help me
    thx,

The Finder uses Spotlight for searches - a corrupt database can cause problems.
A couple of websites you can check for troubleshooting ideas:

  • Lost my iPhone and why doesn't find my iPhone work

Lost my iPhone and why doesn't find my iPhone work

A friendly reminder: In order to use Find My IPhone Successfully, you need to 1. Turn on Location Services, 2. Lock Location Services (Using Restrictions in Settings, General, Restrictions) so that if some one else finds your IPhone, they can NOT turn off Find My IPhone And/Or Location Services itself! 3. Add your Mobile Me and/Or ICloud Account to your IPhone. 4. Lock Accounts (Again in Restrictions) from being changed or Deleted so that your Mobile Me And/OR ICloud Account can NOT be Deleted! 5. Look Up the Location of your IPhone Before Suspending Service to the IPhone, NOT after Suspending Service (simple common since applies here as well).

  • Finder Doesn't Work At All!

    Hello.
I have a Mac Pro (10.8.2). My finder isn't working at all. I click the icon on the dock, I click Command+N or even from the menu bar. It doesn't open at all. I can't even access the Library folder to delete the plst files.
I tried to login as a guest user, and it was working like a charm!
So could this be related to a third party application or something?

    It could be.
Hold shift and boot the system.  Keep shift held until you see the apple, gear, and a progress bar.  Then, let it boot up.  This will take you into safe mode, where login items are disabled.  If everything works fine here, you can go to system preferences >> users and groups >> unlocked the lock in lower left >> click login items in the upper right-ish area.  You could try removing any login items there.
Before you do that, though, if it does boot fine into safe mode and works there, you should be able to try removing the plist instead.  In case you don't know, click the go menu >> hold option >> click library >> go to preference folder.  You could remove the finder plist there, and may want to consider removing the sidebar plist along with desktop plist.

  • Finder doesn't work properly after waking up from sleep?

I have a brand new MacBook Pro with Lion installed on it. It travels back and forth from home to work with me, and at work I plug it in to an Apple Display. When I leave work, I put the laptop to sleep and take it home. At home, when it wakes up from sleep, the finder does not work properly. Often, I cannot see any finder windows, and mission control does not show my various desktops, and only shows open applications. I have already tried throwing away the com.apple.finder.plist file, and it did not help.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Yes, change your display / colour profile to a different (or the default) profile. Has worked for myself, and many others on other forums.
    Hope that helps...

  • "open in finder" doesn't work (mountain lion)

I had a strange problem pop up recently in Mac OS X Mountain Lion where operations to reveal a file in the Finder would not work. I noticed it first in Chrome where I would try and open a downloaded file and could not get to it. Then I tried to reveal a download in Safari and got the same thing (confirming it was not a bug in Chrome).
    I have a MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012)

For those of you who have the problem, I discovered that you need atleast one Web Widget in your Widgets folder.
I copy one over from our MBP, and the functionality returned.

  • Finder doesn't show image dimensions

    Hi!
I have a problem with image dimensions in Finder. Finder doesn't show image dimension info in preview column and Get Info window. But when I open in Preview app I can see dimensions in Get Info window. How to solve this problem. If I want to sort images by dimension, I can't do that. Because Finder doesn't know image dimensions. You can see images below.

    Terence Devlin wrote:
That's because the Finder is a file manager and works from file metadata. The data you're seeking is about the file contents. You need to use a Photo Manager or Browser.
There is someone who can sort images by dimensions and see dimensions in list view. Also if Finder will not show image dimensions, why give me "Dimensions" and "Resolution" option to select in list view.
    VikingOSX wrote:
Launch a Finder window. Press command+J, and set Show Item Info. Now the image dimensions will show below each image icon. If it is a movie, then the duration of the movie is shown.
I have done this. But doesn't show information.

  • Finder doesn't auto-refresh?

    Hello,
On my first use on a Mac, I know that the Finder will automatically update any changes e.g renaming, hide/show extension etc.
Recently, what I found was the Finder doesn't automatically update itself.
Usually I will hide all my documents' extensions. But when I want to show the extensions again, I either have to other folder on the same window then re-navigate to the folder where I put the document which I want to show its extension. This also goes the same when I want to rename and re-hiding the extensions
Sometimes, Finder also doesn't display the live preview (feature like in Vista & 7 which let you see the content of documents without opening it) of certain documents (iWork '09, Office 2008, MindManager 7)
    Any idea what happened here?

Well after trashing plists and restarting and repairing permissions.. la la la..
I decided since I have the extended AppleCare what am I doing pondering when I can just call them??? I know what I was doing, I was hoping I could figure it out myself or another user would know.
I called Apple and zip (well about 20 mins) the rep and I found the problem (it had to do with preferences and login items a bizarre combo of several of them) and fixed it!! Yay!!
We also had to set up a test account to be sure it was my account preferences that were in disarray... worked like a charm. She hoped that was also the cause of my optical drive not reading DVDs but alas, my baby will have to go to repair. It was a great learning experience I will keep in mind for the future. Try out a test account and if I really need help CALL them
Thank you again Barry for answering my plea

    Hello,
The cord might be the case, but first, try these suggestions:
Try putting your iPod into disk mode, then try connecting it to your computer again...
<a href="How to put your iPod into disk mode</a>
Do you have a wall charger? If so, then try connecting your iPod to that, and does it charge, or not?
Have you checked this link out?:
    <a href="http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60941">iPod doesn't charge correctly
Does your iPod appear in "My Computer"? If so...
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
    If not...
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes
Post back on what happens when you try these things out. I hope this helps!

  • TS3276 The Finder doesn't find ~/Library/Mail, or even "library". I need to do some experimenting to get my mail back and want to back up but can't even find a file with my messages in it.

Trying to save my email prior to a wave of experimentation to get email working again but finder doesn't find "library". Has the library been omitted from Mountain Lion?

Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
After that you can drag it to your sidebar for easy access.

  • Finder doesn't display full content

    Hello!
We have an urgent problem here. The Finder seems to update the windows far too slow. When you create a document from an application, the finder shows it after a long time (about an hour or more). When you use Terminal oder even an open dialog it shows the documents. You can open the documents via an open dialog but the Finder doesn't show them.
Copying files via Finder shows them in the finder.
After a reboot the Finder shows all files until you save a document somewhere.
I did not find any error messages in the log files yet.
    Hope you can help.

    2 GHz G5 DC   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.4 Stand Alone Combo Update.
This is a full install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
    Repair permissions before update:
Navigate to Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility (Double Click to Launch) > Choose your HD in the sidebar > First Aid Tab > Click on "Repair Disk Permissions".
    Also Verify Disk before update:
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert your Mac OS Tiger DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear..
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6. Click Repair.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Finder "Find" doesn't find everything?

    (... that's a mouthful).
I am using the Find command to locate large documents, etc.
To so so, I selected "SIZE greater than 10MB" and I also added "Visibility - Visible or invisible"
When running the find however, it still does not locate at least one known item that is 150MB.
The item is a package located in /Users/<myname>/Documents/QEMU. I can plainly see it in the Finder via the documents folder, so I'm unclear why "Find" doesn't see it. I dont see anything indicating "Packages" are excluded from the Find...... or are they?
    Thanks,
    d.

    Hi, dc and AxL —
A mouthful, but also alluringly alliterative...
I agree with the allegation, but my strategy differs a bit from AxL's. I still use ⌘-F ~often — I simply don't fully depend on its "first-pass" results. 1st, I depend on keeping most of my stuff organized in a way that works for me. 2nd, I'll try one or two different approaches to defining a ⌘-F / Spotlight search — preferably within the "correct" folder's window. 3rd... actually, one of those works 99+% of the time for me... I think.
Despite its foibles, I consider Spotlight technology pretty cool — and look forward to seeing it evolve.
    Warm regards to you both,
    Dean
Btw, in this specific case, WhatSize 10.3.9 &/or OmniDiskSweeper 1.5 — both recently updated — can be useful...

  • Finder Doesn't Show External Firewire, But Pathfinder Does

    Hey Folks,
Am hoping someone might be able to help me with this. I've been using Pathfinder for a while, but have wanted to switch back to the normal Finder of late. My only hitch is that, for some reason, the Finder doesn't show an external firewire drive I've got running, while Pathfinder does.
The drive is available -- when I go into terminal, the drive is listed. Again, it's just not showing up in the drive list in the Finder.
Any thoughts? I tried dumping my Finder prefs, but that didn't seem to work.
    Cheers,
    Anthony

Finder->Preferences->General->cycle HDs to show on Desktop. If not, launch Disk Utility->select the FWHD and unmount it. Turn its power off, disconnect the FW cable, and shutdown the machine for five or so minutes. Restart the machine, reinstall the FW cable, and power it up.
